Recently, the regular local rings of prime characteristic were characterized in terms of the finiteness of injective dimension of the Frobenius map. We obtain relative versions of this result.
We investigate the Lyubeznik numbers, and the injective dimension of local cohomology modules, of finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras. We prove that the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers and the standard ones agree locally for almost all reductions to positive characteristic. Additionally, we address an open question of Lyubeznik that asks whether the injective dimension of a local cohomology module over a regular ring is bounded above by the dimension of its support. Although we show that the answer is affirmative for several families of $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras, we also exhibit an exa…
We investigate injective dimension of $F$-finite $F$-modules in characteristic $p$ and holonomic $D$-modules in characteristic 0. One of our main results is the following. If, either $R$ is a regular ring of finite type over an infinite field of characteristic $p>0$ and $M$ is an $F_R$-finite $F_R$-module, or $R=k[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ where $k$ is a field of characteristic 0 and $M$ is a holonomic $D(R,k)$-module, then the injective dimension of $M$ is the same as the dimension of its support.
Let $R$ a commutative ring, $\mathfrak{a} \subset R$ an ideal, $I$ an injective $R$-module and $S \subset R$ a multiplicatively closed set. When $R$ is Noetherian it is well-known that the $\mathfrak{a}$-torsion sub-module $Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}(I)$, the factor module $I/Γ_{\mathfrak{a}}(I)$ and the localization $I_S$ are again injective $R$-modules. We investigate these properties in the case of a commutative ring $R$ by means of a notion of relatively-$\mathfrak{a}$-injective $R$-modules. In particular we get another characterization of weakly pro-regular sequences in terms of relatively injectiv…
We investigate commutative Noetherian rings of prime characteristic such that the Frobenius functor applied to any injective module is again injective. We characterize the class of one-dimensional local rings with this property and show that it includes all one-dimensional F-pure rings.
Let $M$ be either an $F$-finite $F$-module over a noetherian regular ring of characteristic $p > 0$ or a holonomic $D$-module over a formal power series ring over a field of characteristic zero. We prove that $\injdim_R M$ enjoys a dichotomy property: it has only two possible values, $\dim \Supp_R M - 1$ or $\dim \Supp_R M$.
Let $R$ be a regular local ring containing a field $k$ of characteristic $p$ and $M$ be an $\mathscr{F}$-finite module. In this paper, we study the injective dimension of $M$. We prove that $\operatorname{dim}_R(M) -1 \leq\operatorname{inj.dim}_R(M)$. If $R = k[[x_1,\ldots,x_n]]$ where $k$ is a field of characteristic $0$ we prove the analogous result for a class of holonomic $\mathscr{D}$-modules which contains local cohomology modules.
We discuss Matijevic-Roberts type theorem on strong $F$-regularity, $F$-purity, and Cohen-Macaulay $F$-injective (CMFI for short) property. Related to this problem, we also discuss the base change problem and the openness of loci of these properties. In particular, we define the notion of $F$-purity of homomorphisms using Radu-Andre homomorphisms, and prove basic properties of it. We also discuss a strong version of strong $F$-regularity (very strong $F$-regularity), and compare these two versions of strong $F$-regularity. As a result, strong $F$-regularity and very strong $F$-regularity agree…
We extend a result by Huneke and Watanabe bounding the multiplicity of $F$-pure local rings of prime characteristic in terms of their dimension and embedding dimensions to the case of $F$-injective, generalized Cohen-Macaulay rings. We then produce an upper bound for the multiplicity of any local Cohen-Macaulay ring of prime characteritic in terms of their dimensions, embedding dimensions and HSL numbers. Finally, we extend the upper bounds for the multiplicity of generalized Cohen-Macaulay rings in characteristic zero which have dense $F$-injective type.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero and let $R = K[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$. Let $I$ be an ideal in $R$ and let $M = H^i_I(R)$ be the $i^{th}$-local cohomology module of $R$ with respect to $I$. Let $c = \ injdim \ M$. We prove that if $P$ is a prime ideal in $R$ with Bass number $μ_c(P,M) > 0$ then $P$ is a maximal ideal in $R$.
Let $(R,m,k)$ be an excellent local ring of equal characteristic. Let $j$ be a positive integer such that $H_m^i(R)$ has finite length for every $0\leq i <j$. We prove that if $R$ is $F$-injective in characteristic $p>0$ or Du Bois in characteristic $0$, then the truncated dualizing complex $τ_{>-j}ω_R^\bullet$ is quasi-isomorphic to a complex of $k$-vector spaces. As a consequence, $F$-injective or Du Bois singularities with isolated non-Cohen-Macaulay locus are Buchsbaum. Moreover, when $R$ has $F$-rational or rational singularities on the punctured spectrum, we obtain stronger results.
The main aim of this article is to study the relation between $F$-injective singularity and the Frobenius closure of parameter ideals in Noetherian rings of positive characteristic. The paper consists of the following themes, including many other topics. We prove that if every parameter ideal of a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p>0$ is Frobenius closed, then it is $F$-injective. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the injectivity of the Frobenius action on $H^i_{\fm}(R)$ for all $i \le f_{\fm}(R)$, where $f_{\fm}(R)$ is the finiteness dimension of $R$. As applicat…
Let $R$ be a local ring of positive characteristic and $X$ a complex with nonzero finitely generated homology and finite injective dimension. We prove that if derived base change of $X$ via the Frobenius (or more generally, via a contracting) endomorphism has finite injective dimension then $R$ is Gorenstein.
For a finitely generated graded module $M$ over a positively-graded commutative Noetherian ring $R$, the second author established in 1999 some restrictions, which can be formulated in terms of the Castelnuovo regularity of $M$ or the so-called $a^*$-invariant of $M$, on the supporting degrees of a graded-indecomposable graded-injective direct summand, with associated prime ideal containing the irrelevant ideal of $R$, of any term in the minimal graded-injective resolution of $M$. Earlier, in 1995, T. Marley had established connections between finitely graded local cohomology modules of $M$ an…
In this paper we present a condition on a local Cohen-Macaulay F-injective ring of positive characteristic $p > 2$ which implies that its top local cohomology module with support in the maximal ideal has finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules.
Let $R=k[x,y]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$ and let $E$ denote the injective hull of $k$ (which is isomorphic to $H^2_{(x,y)}(R)$). We prove that $E$ is not an injective object in the category of graded $F$-modules over $R$. This answers in the negative a question raised by Lyubeznik-Singh-Walther.
This paper main goal is to measure the defect of Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteiness, complete intersection and regularity for the tensor product of algebras over a ring. For this sake, we determine the homological invariants which are inherent to these notions, such as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of the tensor product constructions in terms of those of their components.
Let (R,m) be a local ring that contains a field. We show that, when R has equal characteristic p>0 and when H_m^i(R) has finite length for all i<dimR, then R is F-injective if and only if every ideal generated by a system of parameters is Frobenius closed. As a corollary, we show that such an R is in fact a Buchsbaum ring. This answers positively a question of S. Takagi that F-injective singularities with isolated non-Cohen-Macaulay locus are Buchsbaum. We also study the characteristic 0 analogue of this question and we show that Du Bois singularities with isolated non-Cohen-Macaulay locus are…
Let $R$ be a regular domain containing a field $K$ of characteristic zero and let $D$ be the ring of $K$-linear differential operators on $R$. Let $E$ be an injective left $D$-module. We ask the question, when is $E$ injective as a $R$-module? We show that this is indeed the case when $R = K[X_1,...,X_n]$ or $R = K[[X_1,...,X_n]]$ or $R = \mathbb{C}\{z_1,...,z_n\}$. We also give an application of our result to local cohomology.
We describe an algorithm for computing parameter-test-ideals in certain local Cohen-Macaulay rings. The algorithm is based on the study of a Frobenius map on the injective hull of the residue field of the ring and on the application of Rodney Sharp's notion of ``special ideals''. Our techniques also provide an algorithm for computing indices of nilpotency of Frobenius actions on top local cohomology modules of the ring and on the injective hull of its residue field. The study of nilpotent elements on injective hulls of residue fields also yields a great simplification of the proof of the fact …
Let $(R,\m,k)$ be a local (Noetherian) ring of positive prime characteristic $p$ and dimension $d$. Let $G_\dt$ be a minimal resolution of the residue field $k$, and for each $i\ge 0$, let $\gothic t_i(R) = \lim_{e\to \8} {\length(H_i(F^e(G_\dt)))}/{p^{ed}}$. We show that if $\gothic t_i(R) = 0$ for some $i>0$, then $R$ is a regular local ring. Using the same method, we are also able to show that if $R$ is an excellent local domain and $\Tor_i^R(k,R^+) = 0$ for some $i>0$, then $R$ is regular (where $R^+$ is the absolute integral closure of $R$). Both of the two results were previously known o…
Let R be a regular ring of characteristic p. Hochster showed that the category of Lyubeznik's F-modules has enough injectives, so that every F-module has an injective resolution in this category. We show that under mild conditions on R, for example when R is essentially of finite type over an F-finite regular local ring, the category of F-modules has finite global dimension d+1 where d=dimR. We also give examples to show that for F-finite F-modules, $\Ext_{F_R}^1(M,N)$ need not be finite.
We study bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring in terms of the number of variables and the degree of the generators. In particular our aim is to give a positive answer to a question posed by Bayer and Mumford, by showing that the known upper bound in characteristic zero holds true also in positive characteristic. We first analyze Giusti's proof, which provides the result in characteristic 0, giving some insight on the combinatorial properties needed in that context. For the general case we provide a new argument which employs Bayer and Stillma…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$ and let $f \in R = k[x_0, ..., x_n]$ be homogeneous of degree $d$. We obtain a sharp bound on the degrees in which the Frobenius action on $H^n_\mathfrak{m}(R/fR)$ can be injective when $R/fR$ has an isolated non-F-pure point at $\mathfrak{m}$. As a corollary, we show that if $(R/fR)_\mathfrak{m}$ is not F-pure then $R/fR$ has an isolated non-F-pure point at $\mathfrak{m}$ if and only if the Frobenius action is injective in degrees $\le -n(d-1)$.
We show that the F-signature of a local ring of characteristic p, defined by Huneke and Leuschke, is positive if and only if the ring is strongly F-regular.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic and $D$ be the ring of differential operators over $R$. Inspired by Euler formula for homogeneous polynomials, we introduce a class of graded $D$-modules, called Eulerian graded $D$-modules. It is proved that a vast class of $D$-modules, including all composite of local cohomology modules, $H_{J_0}^{i_0}(H_{J_1}^{i_1}...(H_{J_n}^{i_n}(R)))$ where $J_1,...,J_n$ are homogeneous ideals of $R$, are Eulerian graded. As an application of our theory, we prove that in all characteristic, these composite of local cohomology modul…
Hochster and Huneke showed that the property of F-regularity deforms for Gorenstein rings, i.e., if (R,m) is a Gorenstein local ring such that R/tR is F-regular for some nonzerodivisor t in m, then R is F-regular. This result was later extended to the case of Q-Gorenstein rings by Smith (for rings of characteristic zero) and Aberbach, Katzman, and MacCrimmon (for rings of positive characteristic). We investigate the deformation of strong F-regularity using an anti-canonical cover of R, i.e., a symbolic Rees algebra S = R + It + I^(2)t^2 + ..., where I is an inverse for the canonical module in …
Among reduced Noetherian prime characteristic commutative rings, we prove that a regular ring is precisely one where finite intersection of ideals commutes with taking bracket powers. However, reducedness is essential for this equivalence. Connections are made with Ohm-Rush content theory, intersection-flatness of the Frobenius map, and various flatness criteria.
Let $S$ be the coordinate ring of the space of $n\times n$ complex skew-symmetric matrices. This ring has an action of the group $\textrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ induced by the action on the space of matrices. For every invariant ideal $I\subseteq S$, we provide an explicit description of the modules $\textrm{Ext}^{\bullet}_S(S/I,S)$ in terms of irreducible representations. This allows us to give formulas for the regularity of basic invariant ideals and (symbolic) powers of ideals of Pfaffians, as well as to characterize when these ideals have a linear free resolution. In addition, given an inclusi…
We introduce a new invariant for local rings of prime characteristic, called Frobenius complexity, that measures the abundance of Frobenius actions on the injective hull of the residue field of a local ring. We present an important case where the Frobenius complexity is finite, and prove that complete, normal rings of dimension two or less have Frobenius complexity less than or equal to zero. Moreover, we compute the Frobenius complexity for the determinantal ring obtained by modding out the $2 \times 2$ minors of a $2 \times 3$ matrix of indeterminates, showing that this number can be positiv…
Let $R$ be an $F$-finite Noetherian regular ring containing an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic, and let $M$ be an $\F$-finite $\F$-module over $R$ in the sense of Lyubeznik (for example, any local cohomology module of $R$). We prove that the $\mathbb{F}_p$-dimension of the space of $\F$-module morphisms $M \rightarrow E(R/\fm)$ (where $\fm$ is any maximal ideal of $R$ and $E(R/\fm)$ is the $R$-injective hull of $R/\fm$) is equal to the $k$-dimension of the Frobenius stable part of $\Hom_R(M,E(R/\fm))$. This is a positive-characteristic analogue of a recent result of H…
Given a graded complete intersection ideal $J = (f_1, \dots, f_c) \subseteq k[x_0, \dots, x_n] = S$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$, we show that if $S/J$ has an isolated non-F-pure point then the Frobenius action on top local cohomology $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in sufficiently negative degrees, and we compute the least degree of any kernel element. If $S/J$ has an isolated singularity, we are also able to give an effective bound on $p$ ensuring the Frobenius action on $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in all negative degr…
We define a family of homogeneous ideals with large projective dimension and regularity relative to the number of generators and their common degree. This family subsumes and improves upon constructions given in [Cav04] and [McC]. In particular, we describe a family of three-generated homogeneous ideals in arbitrary characteristic whose projective dimension grows asymptotically as sqrt{d}^(sqrt(d) - 1).
Recently M. Mustata and V. Srinivas related a natural conjecture about the Frobenius action on the cohomology of the structure sheaf after reduction to characteristic $p > 0$ with another conjecture connecting multiplier ideals and test ideals. We generalize this relation to the case of singular ambient varieties. Additionally, we connect these results to a conjecture relating $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities. Finally, using an unpublished result of Gabber, we also show that $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities have a common definition in terms of smooth hypercovers.
Let $B$ be a regular local ring and $G\subset\Aut(B)$ a finite group of local automorphisms. Assume that $G$ is cyclic of prime order $p$, where $p$ is equal to the residue characteristic of $B$. We give conditions under which the ring of invariants $A=B^G$ is again regular.
Let $\mathrm{VI}$ be the category of finite dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q$-vector spaces whose morphisms are injective linear maps, and let $\mathbf{k}$ be a noetherian ring. We study the category of functors from $\mathrm{VI}$ to $\mathbf{k}$-modules in the case when $q$ is invertible in $\mathbf{k}$. Our results include a structure theorem, finiteness of regularity, and a description of the Hilbert series. These results are crucial in the classification of smooth irreducible $\mathbf{GL}_{\infty}(\mathbb{F}_q)$-representations in non-describing characterisitic which is contained in Part II of th…
In this paper we prove that for an affine scheme essentially of finite type over a field $F$ and of dimension $d$, $K_{d+1}$-regularity implies regularity, assuming that the characteristic of $F$ is zero. This verifies a conjecture of Vorst.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, $G$ a reductive group over $k$, and $V$ a finite dimensional $G$-module. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $U_P$ its unipotent radical. We prove that if $S$=\textyen $Sym V$ has a good filtration, then the ring of invariants $S^{U_P}$ is strongly $F$-regular.
The main theorem (2.2) consists in two characterizations of isomorphisms of factorial domains in terms of prime or primary rings elements, and unramified, flat or weakly injective affine schemes morphisms. In order to apply this theorem to the famous Jacobian Conjecture, we first introduce its different versions in any characteristic (3.1), and give two reformulations of some these versions in terms of domains of positive characteristic (3.8) and finite prime fields (3.9). Finally, we deduce from the main theorem an original reformulation of the any characteristic version of the Jacobian Conje…
