We determine the asymptotic density $δ_k$ of the set of ordered $k$-tuples $(n_1,...,n_k)\in \N^k, k\ge 2$, such that there exists no prime power $p^a$, $a\ge 1$, appearing in the canonical factorization of each $n_i$, $1\le i\le k$, and deduce asymptotic formulae with error terms regarding this problem and analogous ones. We give numerical approximations of the constants $δ_k$ and improve the error term of formula (1.2) due to {\sc E. Cohen}.
We point out that our treatment, based on certain inversion functions, is applicable also in case $k=1$ in order to establish asymptotic formulae with error terms regarding the densities of subsets of $\N$ with additional multiplicative properties. These generalize an often cited result of {\sc G. J. Rieger}.
The paper solves the problems of determining the asymptotics of the number of primes and the sums of functions of primes in a subset of the natural series that satisfies the conditions that the asymptotic density of the number of primes in this subset is constant and not equal to zero.
Let F_q be the finite field of q elements. Let H be a multiplicative subgroup of F_q^*. For a positive integer k and element b\in F_q, we give a sharp estimate for the number of k-element subsets of H which sum to b.
If $A$ is a nonempty subset of an additive group $G$, then the $h$-fold sumset is \[ hA = \{x_1 + \cdots + x_h : x_i \in A_i \text{ for } i=1,2,\ldots, h\}. \] The set $A$ is an $(r,\ell)$-approximate group in $G$ if $A$ is a nonempty subset of a group $G$ and there exists a subset $X$ of $G$ such that $|X| \leq \ell$ and $rA \subseteq XA$. We do not assume that $A$ contains the identity, nor that $A$ is symmetric, nor that $A$ is finite. The set $A$ is an asymptotic $(r,\ell)$-approximate group if the sumset $hA$ is an $(r,\ell)$-approximate group for all sufficiently large $h$. It is proved …
We define the counting function for non-analytic (Maass) newforms of Hecke congruence groups_Gamma_0(M)_. We then calculate the three main terms of this counting function and give necessary and sufficient conditions on M for this counting function to have the same shape as if it were counting eigenvalues related to a cocompact group.
We study the asymptotics of the moments of arithmetic functions that have a limit distribution, not necessarily normal, defined on a subset of the natural series that satisfies certain requirements. Several assertions are proved on estimating the asymptotics of the moments of strongly additive arithmetic functions and also with additive functions of the class H that have a limit distribution and are defined on a subset of the natural series. The first version of the article is devoted to the study of the asymptotics of the moments of arithmetic functions that have a limit distribution on the n…
In earlier work generalizing a 1977 theorem of Alladi, the authors proved a partition-theoretic formula to compute arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the positive integers $\mathbb N$ as limiting values of $q$-series as $q\to ζ$ a root of unity (instead of using the usual Dirichlet series to compute densities), replacing multiplicative structures of $\mathbb N$ by analogous structures in the integer partitions $\mathcal P$. In recent work, Wang obtains a wide generalization of Alladi's original theorem, in which arithmetic densities of subsets of prime numbers are computed as values of…
Let $0\le α\le β\le 1$. For any finite set $B\subset\mathbb{N}$, we show that there exists a set $A\subset\mathbb{N}$ such that $\underline{d}(A+B) = α$ and $\bar{d}(A+B) = β$, where $\underline{d}(A+ B)$ and $\bar{d}(A+B)$ are the lower and upper asymptotic densities of the set $A+B$, respectively. This partially answers a question by Faisant et al. A theorem involving the so-called highly sparse sets was proved in the previous arXiv version of this note; however, as pointed out by Sai Teja Somu, the proof of the theorem was flawed. The theorem is now an open question.
Let $\mathcal{P}({\bf N})$ be the power set of $\bf N$. An upper density (on $\bf N$) is a non\-decreasing and subadditive function $μ^\ast: \mathcal{P}({\bf N})\to\bf R$ such that $μ^\ast({\bf N}) = 1$ and $μ^\ast(k \cdot X + h) = \frac{1}{k} μ^\ast(X)$ for all $X \subseteq \bf N$ and $h,k \in {\bf N}^+$, where $k \cdot X + h := \{kx + h: x \in X\}$. The upper asymptotic, upper Banach, upper logarithmic, upper Buck, upper Pólya, and upper analytic densities are examples of upper densities. We show that every upper density $μ^\ast$ has the strong Darboux property, and so does the associated lo…
For integer $h\geq2$ and $A\subseteq\mathbb{N}$, we define $hA$ to be all integers which can be written as a sum of $h$ elements of $A$. The set $A$ is called an asymptotic basis of order $h$ if $n\in hA$ for all sufficiently large integers $n$. An asymptotic basis $A$ of order $h$ is minimal if no proper subset of $A$ is an asymptotic basis of order $h$. For $W\subseteq\mathbb{N}$, denote by $\mathcal{F}^*(W)$ the set of all finite, nonempty subsets of $W$. Let $A(W)$ be the set of all numbers of the form $\sum_{f \in F} 2^f$, where $F \in \mathcal{F}^*(W)$. In this paper, we give some charac…
We generalize the Chebotarev density formulas of Dawsey (2017) and Alladi (1977) to the setting of arbitrary finite Galois extensions of number fields $L/K$. In particular, if $C \subset G = \textrm{Gal}(L/K)$ is a conjugacy class, then we establish that the Chebotarev density is the following limit of partial sums of ideals of $K$: \[ -\lim_{X\rightarrow\infty} \sum_{\substack{2\leq N(I)\leq X \\ I \in S(L/K; C)}} \frac{μ_K(I)}{N(I)} = \frac{|C|}{|G|}, \] where $μ_K(I)$ denotes the generalized Möbius function and $S(L/K;C)$ is the set of ideals $I\subset \mathcal{O}_K$ such that $I$ has a uni…
Chebyshev was the first to observe a bias in the distribution of primes in residue classes. The general phenomenon is that if $a$ is a nonsquare\mod q and $b$ is a square\mod q, then there tend to be more primes congruent to $a\mod q$ than $b\mod q$ in initial intervals of the positive integers; more succinctly, there is a tendency for $π(x;q,a)$ to exceed $π(x;q,b)$. Rubinstein and Sarnak defined $δ(q;a,b)$ to be the logarithmic density of the set of positive real numbers $x$ for which this inequality holds; intuitively, $δ(q;a,b)$ is the "probability" that $π(x;q,a) > π(x;q,b)$ when $x$ is "…
Let f(m,n) denote the number of relatively prime subsets of {m+1,m+2,...,n}, and let Phi(m,n) denote the number of subsets A of {m+1,m+2,...,n} such that gcd(A) is relatively prime to n. Let f_k(m,n) and Phi_k(m,n) be the analogous counting functions restricted to sets of cardinality k. Simple explicit formulas and asymptotic estimates are obtained for these four functions.
Let $\mathbb{N}$ denote the set of all nonnegative integers and $A$ be a subset of $\mathbb{N}$. Let $h\geq2$ and let $r_h(A,n)=\sharp \{ (a_1,\ldots,a_h)\in A^{h}: a_1+\cdots+a_h=n\}.$ The set $A$ is called an asymptotic basis of order $h$ if $r_h(A,n)\geq 1$ for all sufficiently large integers $n$. An asymptotic basis $A$ of order $h$ is minimal if no proper subset of $A$ is an asymptotic basis of order $h$. Recently, Chen and Tang resoved a problem of Nathanson on minimal asymptotic bases of order $h$. In this paper, we generalized this result to $g$-adic representations.
Abstract upper densities are monotone and subadditive functions from the power set of positive integers to the unit real interval that generalize the upper densities used in number theory, including the upper asymptotic density, the upper Banach density, and the upper logarithmic density. We answer a question posed by G. Grekos in 2013, and prove the existence of translation invariant abstract upper densities onto the unit interval, whose null sets are precisely the family of finite sets, or the family of sequences whose series of reciprocals converge. We also show that no such density can be …
We generalize results of Alladi, Dawsey, and Sweeting and Woo for Chebotarev densities to general densities of sets of primes. We show that if $K$ is a number field and $S$ is any set of prime ideals with natural density $δ(S)$ within the primes, then \[ -\lim_{X \to \infty}\sum_{\substack{2 \le \operatorname{N}(\mathfrak{a})\le X\\ \mathfrak{a} \in D(K,S)}}\frac{μ(\mathfrak{a})}{\operatorname{N}(\mathfrak{a})} = δ(S), \] where $μ(\mathfrak{a})$ is the generalized Möbius function and $D(K,S)$ is the set of integral ideals $ \mathfrak{a} \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ with unique prime divisor of min…
Let $W\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ be a non-empty subset of the integers. A nonempty set $C\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ is said to be an asymptotic complement to $W$ if $W+C$ contains almost all the integers except a set of finite size. $C$ is said to be a minimal asymptotic complement if $C$ is an asymptotic complement, but $C\setminus \lbrace c\rbrace$ is not an asymptotic complement $\forall c\in C$. Asymptotic complements have been studied in the context of representations of integers since the time of Erdős, Hanani, Lorentz and others, while the notion of minimal asymptotic complements is due to Nathan…
A set $A$ is an $(r,\ell)$-approximate group in the additive abelian group $G$ if $A$ is a nonempty subset of $G$ and there exists a subset $X$ of $G$ such that $|X| \leq \ell$ and $rA \subseteq X+A$. The set $A$ is an asymptotic $(r,\ell)$-approximate group if the sumset $hA$ is an $(r,\ell)$-approximate group for all sufficiently large integers $h$. It is proved that every finite set of integers is an asymptotic $(r,r+1)$-approximate group for every integer $r \geq 2$.
We consider in this paper the set of transfer times between two measurable subsets of positive measures in an ergodic probability measure-preserving system of a countable abelian group. If the lower asymptotic density of the transfer times is small, then we prove this set must be either periodic or Sturmian. Our results can be viewed as ergodic-theoretical extensions of some classical sumset theorems in compact abelian groups due to Kneser. Our proofs are based on a correspondence principle for action sets which was developed previously by the first two authors.
Let $G$ be any group and $A$ be an arbitrary subset of $G$ (not necessarily symmetric and not necessarily containing the identity). The $h$-fold product set of $A$ is defined as $$A^{h} :=\lbrace a_{1}.a_{2}...a_{h} : a_{1},\ldots,a_n \in A \rbrace.$$ Nathanson considered the concept of an asymptotic approximate group. Let $r,l \in \mathbb{N}$. The set $A$ is said to be an $(r,l)$ approximate group in $G$ if there exists a subset $X$ in $G$ such that $|X|\leqslant l$ and $A^{r}\subseteq XA$. The set $A$ is an asymptotic $(r,l)$-approximate group if the product set $A^{h}$ is an $(r,l)$-approxi…
Plagne recently determined the asymptotic behavior of the function E(h), which counts the maximum possible number of essential elements in an additive basis for N of order h. Here we extend his investigations by studying asymptotic behavior of the function E(h,k), which counts the maximum possible number of essential subsets of size k, in a basis of order h. For a fixed k and with h going to infinity, we show that E(h,k) = Θ_{k} ([h^{k}/\log h]^{1/(k+1)}). The determination of a more precise asymptotic formula is shown to depend on the solution of the well-known "postage stamp problem" in fini…
Let $\mathcal{P}({\bf N})$ be the power set of ${\bf N}$. We say that a function $μ^\ast: \mathcal{P}({\bf N}) \to \bf R$ is an upper density if, for all $X,Y\subseteq{\bf N}$ and $h, k\in{\bf N}^+$, the following hold: (F1) $μ^\ast({\bf N}) = 1$; (F2) $μ^\ast(X) \le μ^\ast(Y)$ if $X \subseteq Y$; (F3) $μ^\ast(X \cup Y) \le μ^\ast(X) + μ^\ast(Y)$; (F4) $μ^\ast(k\cdot X) = \frac{1}{k} μ^\ast(X)$, where $k \cdot X:=\{kx: x \in X\}$; (F5) $μ^\ast(X + h) = μ^\ast(X)$. We show that the upper asymptotic, upper logarithmic, upper Banach, upper Buck, upper Polya, and upper analytic densities, together…
Let A be an asymptotic basis for N_0 of some order. By an essentiality of A one means a subset P such that A¶is no longer an asymptotic basis of any order and such that P is minimal among all subsets of A with this property. A finite essentiality of A is called an essential subset. In a recent paper, Deschamps and Farhi asked the following two questions : (i) does every asymptotic basis of N_0 possess some essentiality ? (ii) is the number of essential subsets of size at most k of an asymptotic basis of order h bounded by a function of k and h only (they showed the number is always finite) ? W…
We present two short proofs giving the best known asymptotic lower bound for the maximum element in a set of $n$ positive integers with distinct subset sums.
