In this paper we push forward results on the invariant ${\cal F}$-module of a virtual knot investigated by the first named author where ${\cal F}$ is the algebra with two invertible generators $A,B$ and one relation $A^{-1}B^{-1}AB-B^{-1}AB= BA^{-1}B^{-1}A-A$. For flat knots and links the two sides of the relation equation are put equal to unity and the algebra becomes the Weyl algebra. If this is perturbed and the two sides of the relation equation are put equal to a general element, $q$, of the ground ring, then the resulting module lays claim to be the correct generalization of the Alexander module. Many finite dimensional representations are given together with calculations.
Let L be a link in a thickened annulus. We show that its sutured annular Khovanov homology carries an action of the exterior current algebra of the Lie algebra sl_2. When L is an m-framed n-cable of a knot K in the three-sphere, its sutured annular Khovanov homology carries a commuting action of the symmetric group S_n. One therefore obtains a "knotted" Schur-Weyl representation that agrees with classical sl_2 Schur-Weyl duality when K is the Seifert-framed unknot.
In this paper we show how generalized quaternions, including 2X2 matrices, can be used to find solutions of a non-commuting equation intimately connected with braid groups. These solutions can then be used to find polynomial invariants of virtual knots and links.
In this paper we describe progress made toward the construction of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev theory of knot invariants from the geometric point of view. This is done in the perspective of a joint result of the author with A. Uribe which relates the quantum group and the Weyl quantizations of the moduli space of flat SU(2)-connections on the tours. Two results are emphasized: the reconstruction from Weyl quantization of the restriction to the torus of the modular functor, and a description of a basis of the space of quantum observables on the torus in terms of colored curves, which answers …
This paper presents results on the framization of some knot algebras, defined by the authors. We explain the motivations of the concept of framization, coming from the Yokonuma--Hecke algebras, as well as recent results on the framization of the Temperley--Lieb algebra. Finally, we propose framizations for other knot algebras such as the BMW algebra, the $B$--type related Hecke algebras and the singular Hecke algebra.
We answer a question posed by Fielder in [1] concerning two notions of crossing number for algebraic knots $K$ under Hopf fibration, one topological, denoted $h(K)$, the other coming from the realization of such knots around complex singularities, denoted $C_{alg}(K)$. We show that $C_{alg}(K)-h(K)$ can be arbitrarily large. We also give an upper bound for $h$ of some families of knots such as torus knots $T(2,n)$, twist knots and their mirror images.
The concordance orders of many algebraic order two knots of ten or fewer crossings have been heretofore unknown. We use Casson-Gordon invariants and twisted Alexander polynomials to find that, in all but one case, these knots do not have concordance order two. We also find that a certain family of algebraic order two twisted doubles of the unknot have infinite concordance order.
We define homology of ternary algebras satisfying axioms derived from particle scattering or, equivalently, from the third Reidemeister move. We show that ternary quasigroups satisfying these axioms appear naturally in invariants of Reidemeister, Yoshikawa, and Roseman moves. Our homology has a degenerate subcomplex. The normalized homology yields invariants of knots and knotted surfaces.
We generalize Ng's two-variable algebraic/combinatorial $0$-th framed knot contact homology for framed oriented knots in $S^3$ to knots in $S^1 \times S^2$, and prove that the resulting knot invariant is the same as the framed cord algebra of knots. Actually, our cord algebra has an extra variable, which potentially corresponds to the third variable in Ng's three-variable knot contact homology. Our main tool is Lin's generalization of the Markov theorem for braids in $S^3$ to braids in $S^1 \times S^2$. We conjecture that our framed cord algebras are always finitely generated for non-local kno…
Knot Floer homology is a knot invariant defined using holomorphic curves. In more recent work, taking cues from bordered Floer homology, the authors described another knot invariant, called "bordered knot Floer homology", which has an explicit algebraic and combinatorial construction. In the present paper, we extend the holomorphic theory to bordered Heegaard diagrams for partial knot projections, and establish a pairing result for gluing such diagrams, in the spirit of the pairing theorem of bordered Floer homology. After making some model calculations, we obtain an identification of a variant…
Computing polynomial invariants for knots and links using braid representations relies heavily on finding the trace of Hecke algebra elements. There is no easy method known for computing the trace and hence it becomes difficult to compute the known polynomial invariants of knots using their braid representations. In this paper, we provide an algorithm to compute the trace of the Hecke algebra representation of any braid. We simplify this algorithm and write a Mathematica program to compute the invariants such as Alexander polynomial, Jones polynomial, HOMFLY-PT polynomial and Khovanov homology…
We define and study a bigraded knot invariant whose Euler characteristic is the Alexander polynomial, closely connected to knot Floer homology. The invariant is the homology of a chain complex whose generators correspond to Kauffman states for a knot diagram. The definition uses decompositions of knot diagrams: to a collection of points on the line, we associate a differential graded algebra; to a partial knot diagram, we associate modules over the algebra. The knot invariant is obtained from these modules by an appropriate tensor product.
The fundamental problem of knot theory is to know whether two knots are equivalent or not. As a tool to prove that two knots are different, mathematicians have developed various invariants. Knots invariants are just functions that can be computed from the knot and depend only on the topology of the knot. Here we describe quantum invariants, a powerful family of invariants related to the celebrated Yang-Baxter equation.
We prove that the so-called t algebra of braids and ties supports a Markov trace. Further, by using this trace in the Jones' recipe, we define invariant polynomials for classical knots and singular knots. Our invariants have three parameters. The invariant of classical knots is an extension of the Homflypt polynomial and the invariant of singular knots is an extension of an invariant of singular knots previously defined by S. Lambropoulou and the second author.
In GT/0006019 oriented quantum algebras were motivated and introduced in a natural categorical setting. Invariants of knots and links can be computed from oriented quantum algebras, and this includes the Reshetikhin-Turaev theory for Ribbon Hopf algebras. Here we continue the study of oriented quantum algebras from a more algebraic perspective, and develop a more detailed theory for them and their associated invariants.
Families of alternating knots (links) and tangles are studied using as building block the conway defined as the twisting of two strands. The regular representation of knots assumes the projection has the minimal number of overpassings, and the minimal number of conways. The continued fraction associated to rational knots is represented by gaussian brackets and products of 2-dimensional matrices. This gives birth to an algebra of rational knots and tangles which is easily generalized to alternating knots. A collection of 65 families of prime alternating knots with one to six conways is found. E…
We study satellites of Legendrian knots in R^3 and their relation to the Chekanov-Eliashberg differential graded algebra of the knot. In particular, we generalize the well-known correspondence between rulings of a Legendrian knot in R^3 and augmentations of its DGA by showing that the DGA has finite-dimensional representations if and only if there exist certain rulings of satellites of the knot. We derive several consequences of this result, notably that the question of existence of ungraded finite-dimensional representations for the DGA of a Legendrian knot depends only on the topological typ…

We determine the action of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the torus on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the complement of the 3-twist knot. The point is to study the relationship between knot complements and their boundary tori, an idea that has proved very fruitful in knot theory. We place this idea in the context of Chern-Simons theory, where such actions arose in connection with the computation of the noncommutative version of the A-polynomial that was defined by Frohman, Gelca and Lofaro, but they can also be interpreted as quantum mechanical systems. Our goal is to exhibit a de…
In this note, we consider the problem of constructing knot invariants from Yang-Baxter operators associated to (unitary associative) algebra structures. We first compute the enhancements of these operators. Then, we conclude that Turaev's procedure to construct knot invariants, as modified by Murakami, invariably produces from those enhanced Yang-Baxter operators the Alexander polynomial.
This paper generalizes the bordered-algebraic knot invariant introduced in an earlier paper, giving an invariant now with more algebraic structure. It also introduces signs to define these invariants with integral coefficients. We describe effective computations of the resulting invariant.
A handlebody-knot is a handlebody embedded in the 3-sphere. We establish a uniform method to construct invariants for handlebody-links. We introduce the category $\mathcal{T}$ of handlebody-tangles and present it by generators and relations. The result tells us that every functor on $\mathcal{T}$ that gives rise to invariants is derived from what we call a quantum-commutative quantum-symmetric algebra in the target category. The example of such algebras of our main concern is finite-dimensional unimodular Hopf algebras. We investigate how those Hopf algebras give rise to handlebody-knot invari…
In this article we study the differential graded algebra (DGA) invariant associated to Legendrian knots in tight lens spaces. Given a grid number one diagram for a knot in L(p, q), we show how to construct a special Lagrangian diagram suitable for computing the DGA invariant for the Legendrian knot specified by the diagram. We then specialize to L(p, p - 1) and show that for two families of knots, the existence of an augmentation of the DGA depends solely on the value of p.
This paper defines the concept of an oriented quantum algebra and develops its application to the construction of quantum link invariants. We show that all known quantum link invariants can be put into this framework.
In this paper we classify all Markov traces on Iwahori-Hecke algebras associated with the finite Coxeter groups of type B. We then use these traces for constructing Jones-type invariants for oriented knots inside a solid torus, and finally we give skein-theoretical interpretations.
Novikov initiated the study of the algebraic properties of quadratic forms over polynomial extensions by a far-reaching analogue of the Pontrjagin-Thom transversality construction of a Seifert surface of a knot and the infinite cyclic cover of the knot exterior. In this paper the analogy is applied to explain the relationship between the Seifert forms over a ring with involution and Blanchfield forms over the Laurent polynomial extension.
In this work we introduce the concept of Modular Framization or simply Framization. We construct a framization $F_{d,n}$ of the Birman--Wenzl--Murakami algebra, also known as BMW algebra, and start a systematic study of this framization. We show that $F_{d,n}$ is finite dimensional and the \lq braid generators\rq\ of this algebra satisfy a quartic relation which is of minimal degree not containing the generators $t_i$. They also satisfy a quintic relation, as the smallest closed relation. We conjecture that the algebras $F_{d,n}$ support a Markov trace which allow to define polynomial invarian…
We survey Ozsváth-Szabó's bordered approach to knot Floer homology. After a quick introduction to knot Floer homology, we introduce the relevant algebraic concepts ($\mathcal{A}_\infty$-modules, type $D$-structures, box tensor, etc.), we discuss partial Kauffman states, the construction of the boundary algebra, and sketch Ozsváth and Szabó's analytic construction of the type $D$-structure associated to an upper diagram. Finally we give an explicit description of the structure maps of the $DA$-bimodules of some elementary partial diagrams. These can be used to perform explicit computations of t…
Representations of two bridge knot groups in the isometry group of some complete Riemannian 3-manifolds as $E^{3}$ (Euclidean 3-space), $H^{3}$ (hyperbolic 3-space) and $ E^{2,1}$ (Minkowski 3-space), using quaternion algebra theory, are studied. We study the different representations of a 2-generator group in which the generators are send to conjugate elements, by analyzing the points of an algebraic variety, that we call the \emph{variety of affine c-representations of}$G$. Each point in this variety correspond to a representation in the unit group of a quaternion algebra and their affine de…
We construct a representation of the braid groups in a cluster C*-algebra coming from a triangulation of the Riemann surface S with one or two cusps. It is shown that the Laurent polynomials attached to the K-theory of such an algebra are topological invariants of the closure of braids. In particular, the Jones and HOMFLY polynomials of a knot correspond to the case S being a sphere with two cusps and a torus with one cusp, respectively.

The conormal Lagrangian $L_K$ of a knot $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is the submanifold of the cotangent bundle $T^* \mathbb{R}^3$ consisting of covectors along $K$ that annihilate tangent vectors to $K$. By intersecting with the unit cotangent bundle $S^* \mathbb{R}^3$, one obtains the unit conormal $Λ_K$, and the Legendrian contact homology of $Λ_K$ is a knot invariant of $K$, known as knot contact homology. We define a version of string topology for strings in $\mathbb{R}^3 \cup L_K$ and prove that this is isomorphic in degree 0 to knot contact homology. The string topology perspective gives a top…
We explain a direct topological proof for the multiplicativity of Duflo isomorphism for arbitrary finite dimensional Lie algebras, and derive the explicit formula for the Duflo map. The proof follows a series of implications, starting with "the calculation 1+1=2 on a 4D abacus", using the study of homomorphic expansions (aka universal finite type invariants) for ribbon 2-knots, and the relationship between the corresponding associated graded space of arrow diagrams and universal enveloping algebras. This complements the results of the first author, Le and Thurston, where similar arguments usin…
Knotted trivalent graphs (KTGs) form a rich algebra with a few simple operations: connected sum, unzip, and bubbling. With these operations, KTGs are generated by the unknotted tetrahedron and Moebius strips. Many previously known representations of knots, including knot diagrams and non-associative tangles, can be turned into KTG presentations in a natural way. Often two sequences of KTG operations produce the same output on all inputs. These `elementary' relations can be subtle: for instance, there is a planar algebra of KTGs with a distinguished cycle. Studying these relations naturally lea…
We propose a method to compute complex volume of 2-bridge link complements. Our construction sheds light on a relationship between cluster variables with coefficients and canonical decompositions of link complements.
We propose a new non-commutative generalization of the representation variety and the character variety of a knot group. Our strategy is to reformulate the construction of the algebra of functions on the space of representations in terms of Hopf algebra objects in a braided category (braided Hopf algebra). The construction works under the assumption that the algebra is braided commutative. The resulting knot invariant is a module with a coadjoint action. Taking the coinvariants yields a new quantum character variety that may be thought of as an alternative to the skein module. We give concrete…
In this paper we consider all possible generalizations of the B-type Hecke algebras, namely the cyclotomic and what we call 'generalized', and we construct Markov traces on each of them, so as to obtain all possible different levels of homfly-pt analogues in the solid torus related to the (Hecke) algebras of B-type.
A new algebraic method for computing helicity is developed, by discovering a relationship between helicity of fluid mechanics and algebraic polynomial invariants of knot theory. We have constructed a topological invariant $t^{H\left(\mathcal{L}\right)}$ for a link $\mathcal{L}$ of knots, where $H$ is the helicity of a given fluid and $t$ a formal constant. For oriented knotted vortex lines, $t^{H}$ satisfies the skein relations of the Kauffman R-polynomial; for un-oriented knotted lines, $t^{H}$ satisfies the skein relations of the Kauffman bracket polynomial. Our new algebraic method is to us…
The problem of classification of Legendrian knots (links) up to isotopy in the class of Legendrian embeddings (Legendrian isotopy) naturally leads to the following two subproblems. The first of them is: which combinations of the three classical invariants can be realized by a Legendrian knot? (It is well-known that each invariant by itself can be realized by a Legendrian knot). The first step in this direction was done by Bennequin who proved that the Bennequin number of a Legendrian knot is less than twice its genus. The second subproblem is whether there exist a pair of Legendrian knots whic…
It is known that knot homologies admit a physical description as spaces of open BPS states. We study operators and algebras acting on these spaces. This leads to a very rich story, which involves wall crossing phenomena, algebras of closed BPS states acting on spaces of open BPS states, and deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models. One important application to knot homologies is the existence of "colored differentials" that relate homological invariants of knots colored by different representations. Based on this structure, we formulate a list of properties of the colored HOMFLY homology that ca…
We study a topological aspect of rank-1 double affine Hecke algebra (DAHA). Clarified is a relationship between the DAHA of A1-type (resp. CC1-type) and the skein algebra on a once-punctured torus (resp. a 4-punctured sphere), and the SL(2;Z) actions of DAHAs are identified with the Dehn twists on the surfaces. Combining these two types of DAHA, we construct the DAHA representation for the skein algebra on a genus-two surface, and we propose a DAHA polynomial for a double-torus knot, which is a simple closed curve on a genus two Heegaard surface in S3. Discussed is a relationship between the D…
