Universality, complexity and asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces

For $1<p\le \infty$, we show the existence of a Banach space which is both injectively and surjectively universal for the class of all separable Banach spaces with an equivalent $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We prove that this class is analytic complete in the class of separable Banach spaces. These results extend previous works by Kalton, Werner and Kurka in the case $p=\infty$.

On asymptotically uniformly smoothness and nonlinear geometry of Banach spaces

These notes concern the nonlinear geometry of Banach spaces, asymptotic uniform smoothness and several Banach-Saks-like properties. We study the existence of certain concentration inequalities in asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces as well as weakly sequentially continuous coarse (Lipschitz) embeddings into those spaces. Some results concerning the descriptive set theoretical complexity of those properties are also obtained. We finish the paper with a list of open problem.

A universal reflexive space for the class of uniformly convex Banach spaces

We show that there exists a separable reflexive Banach space into which every separable uniformly convex Banach space isomorphically embeds. This solves a problem of J. Bourgain. We also give intrinsic characterizations of separable reflexive Banach spaces which embed into a reflexive space with a block $q$-Hilbertian and/or a block $p$-Besselian finite dimensional decomposition.

On constructions of strong and uniformly minimal M-bases in Banach spaces

We find a natural class of transformations ("flattened perturbations") of a norming M-basis in a Banach space X, which give a strong norming M-basis in X. This simplifies and generalizes the positive answer to the "strong M-basis problem" solved by P. Terenzi. We also show that in general one cannot achieve uniformly minimality applying standard transformations to a given norming M-basis, despite of the existence in X a uniformly minimal strong M-bases.

Remarks on quasi-isometric non-embeddability into uniformly convex Banach spaces

We construct a locally finite graph and a bounded geometry metric space which do not admit a quasi-isometric embedding into any uniformly convex Banach space. Connections with the geometry of $c_0$ and superreflexivity are discussed.

Uniformly convex and smooth Banach spaces and Lp-boundedness properties of Littlewood-Paley and area functions associated with semigroups

In this paper we obtain new characterizations of the uniformly convex and smooth Banach spaces. These characterizations are established by using Lp-boundedness properties of Littlewood-Paley functions and area integrals associated with heat semigroups and involving fractional derivatives. Our results apply for instance by considering the heat semigroups defined by Hermite and Laguerre operators that do not satisfy the Markovian property.

We proved that under certain conditions, the property of embedding into Banach space can be preserved under taking the union the metric spaces. We study some properties of the randomized series and their applications to the geometric structure of Banach spaces. For $n\ge 2$ and $1<p<\infty$, it is shown that $\ell_\infty^n$ is representable in a Banach space $X$ if and only if it is representable in the Lebesgue-Bochner $L_p(X)$. Asymptotic and coarse Lipschitz structures of quasi-reflexive Banach spaces

In this note, we extend to the setting of quasi-reflexive spaces a classical result of N. Kalton and L. Randrianarivony on the coarse Lipschitz structure of reflexive and asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces. As an application, we show for instance, that for $1\le q<p$, a $q$-asymptotically uniformly convex Banach space does not coarse Lipschitz embed into a $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth quasi-reflexive Banach space. Fixed point theorems and convergence theorems for a generalized nonexpansive mapping in uniformly convex Banach spaces

Banach spaces determined by their uniform structures

Following results of Bourgain and Gorelik we show that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty$, as well as some related spaces have the following uniqueness property: If $X$ is a Banach space uniformly homeomorphic to one of these spaces then it is linearly isomorphic to the same space. We also prove that if a $C(K)$ space is uniformly homeomorphic to $c_0$, then it is isomorphic to $c_0$. We show also that there are Banach spaces which are uniformly homeomorphic to exactly $2$ isomorphically distinct spaces.

On Uniformly finitely extensible Banach spaces

In these notes, we study the relation between uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces. In order to understand this relation better, we also look at the problem of when a coarse embedding can be assumed to be topological. Among other results, we show that if a Banach space $X$ uniformly embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and uniformly embeds into $Y$, and if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and homeomorphically embeds into $Y$ by a map with uniformly continuous inverse.

Normal tilings of a Banach space and its ball

We show some new results about tilings in Banach spaces. A tiling of a Banach space $X$ is a covering by closed sets with non-empty interior so that they have pairwise disjoint interiors. If moreover the tiles have inner radii uniformly bounded from below, and outer radii uniformly bounded from above, we say that the tiling is normal. On the reflexivity properties of Banach bundles and Banach modules

In this paper we investigate some reflexivity-type properties of separable measurable Banach bundles over a $σ$-finite measure space. Our two main results are the following: - The fibers of a bundle are uniformly convex (with a common modulus of convexity) if and only if the space of its $L^p$-sections is uniformly convex for every $p\in(1,\infty)$. - The fibers of a bundle are reflexive if and only if the space of its $L^p$-sections is reflexive. Approximation of Lipschitz functions by Lipschitz, C^{p} smooth functions on weakly compactly generated Banach spaces

This note corrects a gap and improves results in an earlier paper by the first named author. More precisely, it is shown that on weakly compactly generated Banach spaces X which admit a C^{p} smooth norm, one can uniformly approximate uniformly continuous functions f:X->R by Lipschitz, C^{p} smooth functions. Moreover, there is a constant C>1 so that any L-Lipschitz function f:X->R can be uniformly approximated by CL-Lipschitz, C^{p} smooth functions. This provides a `Lipschitz version' of the classical approximation results of Godefroy, Troyanski, Whitfield and Zizler.
