We construct a locally finite graph and a bounded geometry metric space which do not admit a quasi-isometric embedding into any uniformly convex Banach space. Connections with the geometry of $c_0$ and superreflexivity are discussed.
In this paper we show that a countable, residually amenable group admits a proper isometric affine action on some uniformly convex Banach space if and only if one (or equivalently, all) of its box families admits a fibred cofinitely-coarse embedding into some uniformly convex Banach space.
We introduce the notions of almost Lipschitz embeddability and nearly isometric embeddability. We prove that for $p\in [1,\infty]$, every proper subset of $L_p$ is almost Lipschitzly embeddable into a Banach space $X$ if and only if $X$ contains uniformly the $\ell_p^n$'s. We also sharpen a result of N. Kalton by showing that every stable metric space is nearly isometrically embeddable in the class of reflexive Banach spaces.
In this paper, we show that the strong embeddability has fibering permanence property and is preserved under the direct limit for the metric space. Moreover, we show the following result: let $G$ is a finitely generated group with a coarse quasi-action on a metric space $X$. If $X$ has finite asymptotic dimension and the quasi-stabilizers are strongly embeddable, then $G$ is also strongly embeddable.
We study properties of twisted unions of metric spaces introduced by Johnson, Lindenstrauss, and Schechtman, and by Naor and Rabani. In particular, we prove that under certain natural mild assumptions twisted unions of $L_1$-embeddable metric spaces also embed in $L_1$ with distortions bounded above by constants that do not depend on the metric spaces themselves, or on their size, but only on certain general parameters. This answers a question stated by Naor and by Naor and Rabani. In the second part of the paper we give new simple examples of metric spaces such their every embedding into $L_p…
It is known that the expanders arising as increasing sequences of level sets of warped cones, as introduced by the second-named author, do not coarsely embed into a Banach space as soon as the corresponding warped cone does not coarsely embed into this Banach space. Combining this with non-embeddability results for warped cones by Nowak and Sawicki, which relate the non-embeddability of a warped cone to a spectral gap property of the underlying action, we provide new examples of expanders that do not coarsely embed into any Banach space with nontrivial type. Moreover, we prove that these expan…
In this note we prove that the Kalton interlaced graphs do not equi-coarsely embed into the James space $\mathcal J$ nor into its dual $\mathcal J^*$. It is a particular case of a more general result on the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Kalton graphs into quasi-reflexive spaces with a special asymptotic stucture. This allows us to exhibit a coarse invariant for Banach spaces, namely the non equi-coarse embeddability of this family of graphs, which is very close to but different from the celebrated property $\mathcal Q$ of Kalton. We conclude with a remark on the coarse geometry of the J…
We say that a finite metric space $X$ can be embedded almost isometrically into a class of metric spaces $C$, if for every $ε> 0$ there exists an embedding of $X$ into one of the elements of $C$ with the bi-Lipschitz distortion less then $1 + ε$. We show that almost isometric embeddability conditions are equal for following classes of spaces (a) Quotients of Euclidean spaces by isometric actions of finite groups, (b) $L_2$-Wasserstein spaces over Euclidean spaces, (c) Compact flat manifolds, (d) Compact flat orbifolds, (e) Quotients of connected compact bi-invariant Lie groups by isometric act…
We construct metric spaces that do not have property A yet are coarsely embeddable into the Hilbert space. Our examples are so called warped cones, which were introduced by J. Roe to serve as examples of spaces non-embeddable into a Hilbert space and with or without property A. The construction provides the first examples of warped cones combining coarse embeddability and lack of property A. We also construct warped cones over manifolds with isometrically embedded expanders and generalise Roe's criteria for the lack of property A or coarse embeddability of a warped cone. Along the way, it is p…
We study metric spaces with bounded rough angles. E. Le Donne, T. Rajala and E. Walsberg implicitly used this notion to show that infinite snowflakes can not be isometrically embedded into finite dimensional Banach spaces. We show that bounded non-rectifiable self-contracted curves contain metric subspaces with bounded rough angles. Which provides rectifiability of bounded self-contracted curves in a wide class of metric spaces including reversible $C^{\infty}$-Finsler manifolds, locally compact $CAT(k)$-spaces with locally extendable geodesics and locally compact Busemann spaces with locally …
We define a way of approximating actions on measure spaces using finite graphs; we then show that in quite general settings these graphs form a family of expanders if and only if the action is expanding in measure. This provides a somewhat unified approach to construct expanders. We also show that the graphs we obtain are uniformly quasi-isometric to the level sets of warped cones. This way we can also prove non-embeddability results for the latter and restate an old conjecture of Gamburd-Jakobson-Sarnak.
We consider the problem of isometric embedding of metric spaces to the Banach spaces; and introduce and study the remarkable class of so-called linearly rigid metric spaces: these are the spaces that admit a unique, up to isometry, linearly dense isometric embedding into a Banach space. The first nontrivial example of such a space was given by R. Holmes; he proved that the universal Urysohn space has this property. We give a criterion of linear rigidity of a metric space, which allows us to give a simple proof of the linear rigidity of the Urysohn space and some other metric spaces. The variou…
We prove that if a quasi-isometry of warped cones is induced by a map between the base spaces of the cones, the actions must be conjugate by this map. The converse is false in general, conjugacy of actions is not sufficient for quasi-isometry of the respective warped cones. For a general quasi-isometry of warped cones, using the asymptotically faithful covering constructed in a previous work with Jianchao Wu, we deduce that the two groups are quasi-isometric after taking Cartesian products with suitable powers of the integers. Secondly, we characterise geometric properties of a group (coarse e…
Let $M_p(X,T)$ denote the Markov type $p$ constant at time $T$ of a metric space $X$, where $p \ge 1$. We show that $M_p(Y,T) \le M_p(X,T)$ in each of the following cases: (a)$X$ and $Y$ are geodesic spaces and $Y$ is covered by $X$ via a finite-sheeted locally isometric covering, (b)$Y$ is the quotient of $X$ by a finite group of isometries, (c) $Y$ is the $L^p$-Wasserstein space over $X$. As an application of (a) we show that all compact flat manifolds have Markov type $2$ with constant $1$. In particular the circle with its intrinsic metric has Markov type $2$ with constant $1$. This answer…
We discuss various aspects of isometric group actions on proper metric spaces. As one application, we show that a proper and Weyl transitive action on a euclidean building is strongly transitive on the maximal atlas (the complete apartment system) of the building.
For a finite multigraph G, let Λ(G) denote the lattice of integer flows of G -- this is a finitely generated free abelian group with an integer-valued positive definite bilinear form. Bacher, de la Harpe, and Nagnibeda show that if G and H are 2-isomorphic graphs then Λ(G) and Λ(H) are isometric, and remark that they were unable to find a pair of nonisomorphic 3-connected graphs for which the corresponding lattices are isometric. We explain this by examining the lattice Λ(M) of integer flows of any regular matroid M. Let M_\bullet be the minor of M obtained by contracting all co-loops. We show…
We observe that embeddings into random metrics can be fruitfully used to study the $L_1$-embeddability of lamplighter graphs or groups, and more generally lamplighter metric spaces. Once this connection has been established, several new upper bound estimates on the $L_1$-distortion of lamplighter metrics follow from known related estimates about stochastic embeddings into dominating tree-metrics. For instance, every lamplighter metric on a $n$-point metric space embeds bi-Lipschitzly into $L_1$ with distortion $O(\log n)$. In particular, for every finite group $G$ the lamplighter group $H = \m…
The Finslerian unit ball is called the {\it Finsleroid} if the covering indicatrix is a space of constant curvature. We prove that Finsler spaces with such indicatrices possess the remarkable property that the tangent spaces are conformally flat with the conformal factor of the power dependence on the Finsler metric function. It is amazing but the fact that in such spaces the notion of the two-vector angle defined by the geodesic arc on the indicatrix can readily be induced from the Riemannian space obtained upon the conformal transformation, which opens up the straightforward way to induce al…
