We show that the algebra A of a commutative unital spectral triple (A,H,D) satisfying several additional conditions, slightly stronger than those proposed by Connes, is the algebra of smooth functions on a compact spin manifold.
By exploiting the relation between Fredholm modules and the Segal-Shale-Stinespring version of canonical quantization, and taking as starting point the first-quantized fields described by Connes' axioms for noncommutative spin geometries, a Hamiltonian framework for fermion quantum fields over noncommutative manifolds is introduced. We analyze the ultraviolet behaviour of second-quantized fields over noncommutative 3-tori, and discuss what behaviour should be expected on other noncommutative spin manifolds.
In previous papers, we constructed smooth (1,\infty)-summable semfinite spectral triples for graph algebras with a faithful trace, and (k,\infty)-summable semifinite spectral triples for k-graph algebras. In this paper we identify classes of graphs and k-graphs which satisfy a version of Connes' conditions for noncommutative manifolds.
We begin to study a sigma-model in which both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are made noncommutative. The most precise results apply to the case where both the space-time manifold and the two-dimensional string world-sheet are replaced by noncommutative tori. In this situation, we are able to determine when maps between such noncommutative tori exist, to derive the Euler-Lagrange equations, to classify many of the critical points of the Lagrangian, and to study the associated partition function.
We study an example of an index problem for a Dirac-like operator subject to Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions on a noncommutative manifold with boundary, namely the quantum unit disk.
A general question behind this paper is to explore a good notion for intrinsic curvature in the framework of noncommutative geometry started by Alain Connes in the 80s. It has only recently begun (2014) to be comprehended via the intensive study of modular geometry on the noncommutative two tori. In this paper, we extend recent results on the modular geometry on noncommutative two tori to a larger class of noncommutative manifolds: toric noncommutative manifolds. The first contribution of this work is a pseudo differential calculus which is suitable for spectral geometry on toric noncommutativ…
We compute $K-theory of noncommutative Bieberbach manifolds, which quotients of a three-dimensional noncommutative torus by a free action of a cyclic group Z_N, N=2,3,4,6.
We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spin^c manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spin^c structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.
We give new examples of noncommutative manifolds that are less standard than the NC-torus or Moyal deformations of $\Rb^n$. They arise naturally from basic considerations of noncommutative differential topology and have non-trivial global features. The new examples include the instanton algebra and the NC-4-spheres $S^4_θ$. The noncommutative algebras $\Ac=C^{\ify} (S^{4}_θ)$ of functions on NC-spheres are solutions to the vanishing, $ {\rm ch}_j (e) = 0, j < 2 $, of the Chern character in the cyclic homology of $\Ac$ of an idempotent $e \in M_4 (\Ac), e^2 = e, e = e^*$. The universal noncommu…
In a noncommutative torus, effect of perturbation by inner derivation on the associated quantum stochastic process and geometric parameters like volume and scalar curvature have been studied. Cohomological calculations show that the above perturbation produces new spectral triples. Also for the Weyl C^*-algebra, the Laplacian associated with a natural stochastic process is obtained and associated volume form is calculated. Keywords: noncommutative torus, Laplacian, Dixmier trace, quantum stochastic process.
We prove a noncompact Serre-Swan theorem characterising modules which are sections of vector bundles not necessarily trivial at infinity. We then identify the endomorphism algebras of the resulting modules. The endomorphism results continue to hold for the generalisation of these modules to noncommutative, nonunital algebras. Finally, we apply these results to not necessarily compact noncommutative spin manifolds, proving that Poincare Duality implies the Morita equivalence of the `algebra of functions' and the `Clifford algebra.'
The subject of this PhD thesis is noncommutative geometry - more specifically spectral triples - and how it can be generalized to semi-Riemannian manifolds generally, and Lorentzian manifolds in particular. The first half of this thesis will thus be dedicated to the transition from Riemannian to semi-Riemannian manifolds. This entails a study of Clifford algebras for indefinite vector spaces and Spin structures on semi-Riemannian manifolds. An important consequence of this is the introduction of Krein spaces, which will enable us to generalize spectral triples to indefinite spectral triples. I…
It is well-known that any covering space of a Riemannian manifold has the natural structure of a Riemannian manifold. This article contains a noncommutative generalization of this fact. Since any Riemannian manifold with a Spin-structure defines a spectral triple, the spectral triple can be regarded as a noncommutative Spin-manifold. Similarly there is an algebraic construction which is a noncommutative generalization of topological covering. This article contains a construction of spectral triple on the "noncommutative covering space".
We begin with a review and analytical construction of quantum Gaussian process (and quantum Brownian motions) in the sense of [25],[10] and others, and then formulate and study in details (with a number of interesting examples) a definition of quantum Brownian motions on those noncommutative manifolds (a la Connes) which are quantum homogeneous spaces of their quantum isometry groups in the sense of [11]. We prove that bi-invariant quantum Brownian motion can be 'deformed' in a suitable sense. Moreover, we propose a noncommutative analogue of the well-known asymptotics of the exit time of clas…
In this paper we explain how to define "lower dimensional'' volumes of any compact Riemannian manifold as the integrals of local Riemannian invariants. For instance we give sense to the area and the length of such a manifold in any dimension. Our reasoning is motivated by an idea of Connes and involves in an essential way noncommutative geometry and the analysis of Dirac operators on spin manifolds. However, the ultimate definitions of the lower dimensional volumes don't involve noncommutative geometry or spin structures at all.
We introduce a (bi)category $\mathfrak{Sing}$ whose objects can be functorially assigned spaces of distributions and generalized functions. In addition, these spaces of distributions and generalized functions possess intrinsic notions of regularity and singularity analogous to usual Schwartz distributions on manifolds. The objects in this category can be obtained from smooth manifolds, noncommutative spaces, or Lie groupoids. An application of these structures relates the longitudinal propagation of singularities for pseudo-differential operators on a groupoid with propagation of singularities…
This paper has four main parts. In the first part, we construct a noncommutative residue for the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, that is, for the class of Heisenberg PsiDOs introduced by Beals-Greiner and Taylor. This noncommutative residue appears as the residual trace on integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs induced by the analytic extension of the usual trace to non-integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs. Moreover, it agrees with the integral of the density defined by the logarithmic singularity of the Schwartz kernel of the corresponding Heisenberg PsiDO. In addition, we show that this n…
It is proved that the (volume and orientation-preserving) quantum isometry group of a spectral triple obtained by deformation by some dual unitary 2-cocycle is isomorphic with a similar twist-deformation of the quantum isometry group of the original (undeformed) spectral triple. This result generalizes similar work by Bhowmick and Goswami for Rieffel-deformed spectral triples in [Comm. Math. Phys. 285 (2009), 421-444, arXiv:0707.2648].
We first propose a conformal geometry for Connes-Landi noncommutative manifolds and study the associated scalar curvature. The new scalar curvature contains its Riemannian counterpart as the commutative limit. Similar to the results on noncommutative two tori, the quantum part of the curvature consists of actions of the modular derivation through two local curvature functions. Explicit expressions for those functions are obtained for all even dimensions (greater than two). In dimension four, the one variable function shows striking similarity to the analytic functions of the characteristic cla…
We factorize the Dirac operator on the Connes-Landi 4-sphere in unbounded KK-theory. We show that a family of Dirac operators along the orbits of the torus action defines an unbounded Kasparov module, while the Dirac operator on the principal orbit space -an open quadrant in the 2-sphere- defines a half-closed chain. We show that the tensor sum of these two operators coincides up to unitary equivalence with the Dirac operator on the Connes-Landi sphere and prove that this tensor sum is an unbounded representative of the interior Kasparov product in bivariant K-theory. We also generalize our re…
Let G be a finitely generated discrete group. The standard spectral triple on the group C*-algebra C*(G) is shown to admit the quantum group of orientation preserving isometries. This leads to new examples of compact quantum groups. In particular the quantum isometry group of the C*-algebra of the free group on n-generators is computed and turns out to be a quantum group extension of the quantum permutation group A_{2n} of Wang. The quantum groups of orientation and real structure preserving isometries are also considered and construction of the Laplacian for the standard spectral triple on C*…
Any oriented Riemannian manifold with a Spin-structure defines a spectral triple, so the spectral triple can be regarded as a noncommutative Spin-manifold. Otherwise for any unoriented Riemannian manifold there is the two-fold covering by oriented Riemannian manifold. Moreover there are noncommutative generalizations of finite-fold coverings. This circumstances yield a notion of unoriented spectral triple which is covered by oriented one.
Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integr…
Gelfand - Naĭmark theorem supplies a one to one correspondence between commutative $C^*$-algebras and locally compact Hausdorff spaces. So any noncommutative $C^*$-algebra can be regarded as a generalization of a topological space. Similarly a spectral triple is a generalization of a Riemannian manifold. An (infinitely listed) covering of a Riemannian manifold has natural structure of Riemannian manifold. Here we will consider the noncommutative generalization of this result.
We describe basic concepts of noncommutative geometry and a general construction extending the familiar duality between ordinary spaces and commutative algebras to a duality between Quotient spaces and Noncommutative algebras. Basic tools of the theory, K-theory, Cyclic cohomology, Morita equivalence, Operator theoretic index theorems, Hopf algebra symmetry are reviewed. They cover the global aspects of noncommutative spaces, such as the transformation $θ\to 1/θ$ for the NC torus $\Tb_θ^2$, unseen in perturbative expansions in $θ$ such as star or Moyal products. We discuss the foundational pro…
We discuss the relation between the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between probability distributions on a metric space, arising in the study of Monge-Kantorovich transport problem, and the spectral distance of noncommutative geometry. Starting from a remark of Rieffel on compact manifolds, we first show that on any - i.e. non-necessary compact - complete Riemannian spin manifolds, the two distances coincide. Then, on convex manifolds in the sense of Nash embedding, we provide some natural upper and lower bounds to the distance between any two probability distributions. Specializing to the Euc…
Motivated by the search for new examples of ``noncommutative manifolds'', we study the noncommutative geometry (in the sense of Connes) of the group C*-algebra of the three dimensional discrete Heisenberg group. We present a unified treatment of the K-homology, cyclic cohomology and derivations of this algebra.
The aim of this paper is to construct the Poincare isomorphism in K-theory on manifolds with edges. We show that the Poincare isomorphism can naturally be constructed in the framework of noncommutative geometry. More precisely, to a manifold with edges we assign a noncommutative algebra and construct an isomorphism between the K-group of this algebra and the K-homology group of the manifold with edges viewed as a compact topological space.
Spectral triples over noncommutative principal $\T^n$-bundles are studied, extending recent results about the noncommutative geometry of principal U(1)-bundles. We relate the noncommutative geometry of the total space of the bundle with the geometry of the base space. Moreover, strong connections are used to build new Dirac operators. We discuss as a particular case the commutative case, the noncommutative tori and theta deformed manifolds.
We propose an algebraic formulation of the notion of causality for spectral triples corresponding to globally hyperbolic manifolds with a well defined noncommutative generalization. The causality is given by a specific cone of Hermitian elements respecting an algebraic condition based on the Dirac operator and a fundamental symmetry. We prove that in the commutative case the usual notion of causality is recovered. We show that, when the dimension of the manifold is even, the result can be extended in order to have an algebraic constraint suitable for a Lorentzian distance formula.
Spectral triples for nonunital algebras model locally compact spaces in noncommutative geometry. In the present text, we prove the local index formula for spectral triples over nonunital algebras, without the assumption of local units in our algebra. This formula has been successfully used to calculate index pairings in numerous noncommutative examples. The absence of any other effective method of investigating index problems in geometries that are genuinely noncommutative, particularly in the nonunital situation, was a primary motivation for this study and we illustrate this point with two ex…
We continue the study of fuzzy geometries inside Connes' spectral formalism and their relation to multimatrix models. In this companion paper to [arXiv 2007:10914, Ann. Henri Poincaré] we propose a gauge theory setting based on noncommutative geometry, which -- just as the traditional formulation in terms of almost-commutative manifolds -- has the ability to also accommodate a Higgs field. However, in contrast to "almost-commutative manifolds", the present framework employs only finite dimensional algebras which we call gauge matrix spectral triples. In a path-integral quantization approach to…
We study differential operators, whose coefficients define noncommutative algebras. As algebra of coefficients, we consider crossed products, corresponding to action of a discrete group on a smooth manifold. We give index formulas for Euler, signature and Dirac operators twisted by projections over the crossed product. Index of Connes operators on the noncommutative torus is computed.
In this two-part paper we propose an extension of Connes' notion of even spectral triple to the Lorentzian setting. This extension, which we call a spectral spacetime, is discussed in part II where several natural examples are given which are not covered by the previous approaches to the problem. Part I only deals with the commutative and continuous case of a manifold. It contains all the necessary material for the generalization to come in part II, namely the characterization of the signature of the metric in terms of a time-orientation 1-form and a natural Krein product on spinor fields. It …
The fundamental group of a hyperbolic manifold acts on the limit set, giving rise to a cross-product C^* algebra. We construct nontrivial K-cycles for the cross-product algebra, thereby extending some results of Connes and Sullivan to higher dimensions. We also show how the Patterson-Sullivan measure on the limit set can be interpreted as a center-valued KMS state.
We give a new definition of Levi-Civita connection for a noncommutative pseudo-Riemannian metric on a noncommutative manifold given by a spectral triple. We prove the existence-uniqueness result for a class of modules of one forms over a large class of noncommutative manifolds, including the matrix geometry of the fuzzy 3-sphere, the quantum Heisenberg manifolds and Connes-Landi deformations of spectral triples on the Connes-Dubois Violette-Rieffel-deformation of a compact manifold equipped with a free toral action. It is interesting to note that in the example of the quantum Heisenberg manifo…
For a large class of word hyperbolic groups G the cross product C^*-algebra arising from the action of G on its Gromov boundary is shown to satisfy Poincare duality in K-theory. This class strictly contains fundamental groups of compact, negatively curved manifolds. The Baum-Connes Conjecture for amenable groupoids is used in a crucial way.
In the framework of C*-algebraic deformation quantization we propose a notion of deformation groupoid which could apply to known examples e.g. Connes' tangent groupoid of a manifold, its generalisation by Landsman and Ramazan, Rieffel's noncommutative torus, and even Landi's noncommutative 4-sphere. We construct such groupoid for a wide class of T^n-spaces, that generalizes the one given for C^n by Bellissard and Vittot. In particular, using the geometric properties of the moment map discovered in the '80s by Atiyah, Delzant, Guillemin and Sternberg, it provides a \cstar-algebraic deformation …
We use operator algebras and operator theory to obtain new result concerning Berezin quantization of compact Kähler manifolds. Our main tool is the notion of subproduct systems of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, which enables all involved objects, such as the Toeplitz operators, to be very conveniently expressed in terms of shift operators compressed to a subspace of full Fock space. This subspace is not required to be contained in the symmetric Fock space, so from finite-dimensional matrix algebras we can construct noncommutative manifolds with extra structure generalizing that of a projec…
Noncommutative Kähler structures were recently introduced by the second author as a framework for studying noncommutative Kähler geometry on quantum homogeneous spaces. It was subsequently observed that the notion of a positive vector bundle directly generalises to this setting, as does the Kodaira vanishing theorem. In this paper, by restricting to covariant Kähler structures of irreducible type (those having an irreducible space of holomorphic one-forms) we provide simple cohomological criteria for positivity, offering a means to avoid explicit curvature calculations. These general results a…
In the noncommutative geometry program of Connes there are two variations of the concept of Yang-Mills action functional. We show that for the quantum Heisenberg manifolds they agree.
This paper continues the investigations of noncommutative ordered spaces put forward by one of the authors. These metaphoric spaces are defined dually by so-called \emph{isocones} which generalize to the noncommutative setting the convex cones of order-preserving functions. In this paper we will consider the case of isocones inside almost-commutative algebras of the form ${\cal C}(M)\otimes A_f$, with $M$ a compact metrizable space. We will give a family of isocones in such an algebra with the property that every possible isocone is contained in exactly one member of the family. We conjecture …
We recall the emergence of a generalized gauge theory from a noncommutative Riemannian spin manifold, viz. a real spectral triple $(A,H,D;J)$. This includes a gauge group determined by the unitaries in the $*$-algebra $A$ and gauge fields arising from a so-called perturbation semigroup which is associated to $A$. Our main new result is the interpretation of this generalized gauge theory in terms of an upper semi-continuous $C^*$-bundle on a (Hausdorff) base space $X$. The gauge group acts by vertical automorphisms on this $C^*$-bundle and can (under some mild conditions) be identified with the…
