Motivated by the search for new examples of ``noncommutative manifolds'', we study the noncommutative geometry (in the sense of Connes) of the group C*-algebra of the three dimensional discrete Heisenberg group. We present a unified treatment of the K-homology, cyclic cohomology and derivations of this algebra.
In this article we describe extensions of some K-theory classes of Heisenberg modules over higher-dimensional noncommutative tori to projective modules over crossed products of noncommutative tori by finite cyclic groups, aka noncommutative orbifolds. The two dimensional case was treated by Echterhoff, Lück, Phillips and Walters. Our approach is based on the theory of metaplectic transformations of the representation theory of the Heisenberg group. We also describe the generators of the K-groups of the crossed products of flip actions by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ on 3-dimensional noncommutative tori.
We prove maximal ergodic theorems for spherical averages on the Heisenberg groups acting on $L_p$ spaces over measure spaces not necessarily commutative, that is, on noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. The scale of $p$ is optimal in the reduced Heisenberg group case. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems and differential theorems in the noncommutative setting. The results can be regarded as noncommutative analogues of Nevo-Thangavelu's ergodic theorems. The approach of proof involves recent developments in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces and in noncommutative harmonic analysis, in …
This paper has four main parts. In the first part, we construct a noncommutative residue for the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, that is, for the class of Heisenberg PsiDOs introduced by Beals-Greiner and Taylor. This noncommutative residue appears as the residual trace on integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs induced by the analytic extension of the usual trace to non-integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs. Moreover, it agrees with the integral of the density defined by the logarithmic singularity of the Schwartz kernel of the corresponding Heisenberg PsiDO. In addition, we show that this n…
Every Heisenberg manifold has a natural "sub-Riemannian" metric with interesting properties. We describe the corresponding noncommutative metric structure for Rieffel's quantum Heisenberg manifolds.
This paper considers generators of Heisenberg modules in the case of twisted group $C^*$-algebras of closed subgroups of locally compact abelian groups and how the restrction and/or periodization of these generators yield generators for other Heisenberg modules. Since generators of Heisenberg modules are exactly the generators of (multi-window) Gabor frames, our methods are going to be from Gabor analy\-sis. In the latter setting the procedure of restriction and periodization of generators is well known. Our results extend this established part of Gabor analy\-sis to the general setting of loc…
In the noncommutative geometry program of Connes there are two variations of the concept of Yang-Mills action functional. We show that for the quantum Heisenberg manifolds they agree.
We construct a non-formal deformation machinery for the actions of the Heisenberg supergroup analogue to the one developed by M. Rieffel for the actions of R^d. However, the method used here differs from Rieffel's one: we obtain a Universal Deformation Formula for the actions of R^{m|n} as a byproduct of Weyl ordered Kirillov's orbit method adapted to the graded setting. To do so, we have to introduce the notion of C*-superalgebra, which is compatible with the deformation, and which can be seen as corresponding to noncommutative superspaces. We also use this construction to interpret the renor…
In this paper, we discuss the Yang-Mills functional and a certain family of its critical points on quantum Heisenberg manifolds using noncommutative geometrical methods developed by A. Connes and M. Rieffel. In our main result, we construct a certain family of connections on a projective module over a quantum Heisenberg manifold that give rise to critical points of the Yang-Mills functional. Moreover, we show that this set of solutions can be described as a set of solutions to Laplace's equation on quantum Heisenberg manifolds.
Using a global symbol calculus for pseudodifferential operators on tori, we build a canonical trace on classical pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori in terms of a canonical discrete sum on the underlying toroidal symbols. We characterise the canonical trace on operators on the noncommutative torus as well as its underlying canonical discrete sum on symbols of fixed (resp.\ any) non--integer order. On the grounds of this uniqueness result, we prove that in the commutative setup, this canonical trace on the noncommutative torus reduces to Kontsevich and Vishik's canonical trace w…
The curvature of the noncommutative torus $T^2_θ$ ($θ$ irrational) endowed with a noncommutative conformal metric has been the focus of attention of several recent works. Continuing the approach taken in the paper [A. Connes and H. Moscovici, http://arxiv.org/abs/1110.3500] we extend the study of the curvature to twisted Dirac spectral triples constructed out of Heisenberg bimodules that implement the Morita equivalence of the $C^*$-algebra $A_θ= C(T^2_θ)$ with other toric algebras $A_{θ'}$. In the enlarged context the conformal metric on $T^2_θ$ is exchanged with an arbitrary Hermitian metric…
We study reflexivity and structure properties of operator algebras generated by representations of the discrete Heisenberg semi-group. We show that the left regular representation of this semi-group gives rise to a semi-simple reflexive algebra. We exhibit an example of a representation which gives rise to a non-reflexive algebra. En route, we establish reflexivity results for subspaces of $H^{\infty}(\bb{T})\otimes\cl B(\cl H)$.
We revisit and generalize the application of a method introduced by Latrémolière and Packer for constructing finitely generated projective modules over the noncommutative solenoid C*-algebras. By realizing them as direct limits of rotation algebras, the method constructs directed systems of equivalence bimodules between rotation algebras that satisfy the necessary compatibility conditions to build Morita equivalence bimodules between the direct limit C*-algebras. In the irrational case, we use a fixed projection in a matrix algebra over the rotation algebra satisfying a key condition to build …
A definition of relative discrete spectrum of noncommutative W*-dynamical systems is given in terms of the basic construction of von Neumann algebras, motivated from three perspectives: Firstly, as a complementary concept to relative weak mixing of W*-dynamical systems. Secondly, by comparison with the classical (i.e. commutative) case. And, thirdly, by noncommutative examples.
We investigate and review how Fourier transform is involved in the analysis of a twisted group algebra $L^1(G, σ)$ for $G=\widehatΓ\times Γ$ and $σ:G\times G \to \mathbb{T}$ 2- cocycle where $Γ$ is a locally compact abelian group and $\widehatΓ$ its Pontryagin dual. By weaving the Schrödinger representation and Fourier transform, we construct the dual equivalence bimodule of the Heisenberg bimodule generated by the dual Schrödinger representation and observe several relations between them including the application of noncommutative solitons.
We study differential operators, whose coefficients define noncommutative algebras. As algebra of coefficients, we consider crossed products, corresponding to action of a discrete group on a smooth manifold. We give index formulas for Euler, signature and Dirac operators twisted by projections over the crossed product. Index of Connes operators on the noncommutative torus is computed.
The study of actions of countable groups by automorphisms of compact abelian groups has recently undergone intensive development, revealing deep connections with operator algebras and other areas. The discrete Heisenberg group is the simplest noncommutative example, where dynamical phenomena related to its noncommutativity already illustrate many of these connections. The explicit structure of this group means that these phenomena have concrete descriptions, which are not only instances of the general theory but are also testing grounds for further work. We survey here what is known about such…
We give a new definition of Levi-Civita connection for a noncommutative pseudo-Riemannian metric on a noncommutative manifold given by a spectral triple. We prove the existence-uniqueness result for a class of modules of one forms over a large class of noncommutative manifolds, including the matrix geometry of the fuzzy 3-sphere, the quantum Heisenberg manifolds and Connes-Landi deformations of spectral triples on the Connes-Dubois Violette-Rieffel-deformation of a compact manifold equipped with a free toral action. It is interesting to note that in the example of the quantum Heisenberg manifo…
For a closed cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of a locally compact group $G$, given a compact abelian subgroup $K$ of $G$ and a homomorphism $ρ:\hat{K}\to G$ satisfying certain conditions, Landstad and Raeburn constructed equivariant noncommutative deformations $C^*(\hat{G}/Γ, ρ)$ of the homogeneous space $G/Γ$, generalizing Rieffel's construction of quantum Heisenberg manifolds. We show that when $G$ is a Lie group and $G/Γ$ is connected, given any norm on the Lie algebra of $G$, the seminorm on $C^*(\hat{G}/Γ, ρ)$ induced by the derivation map of the canonical $G$-action defines a compact quantum metr…
The structure of subspaces of a Hilbert space that are invariant under unitary representations of a discrete group is related to a notion of Hilbert modules endowed with inner products taking values in spaces of unbounded operators. A theory of reproducing systems in such modular structures is developed, providing a general framework that includes fundamental results of shift-invariant spaces. In particular, general characterizations of Riesz and frame sequences associated to group representations are provided, extending previous results for abelian groups and for cyclic subspaces of unitary r…
We construct a spectral triple on a quantum Heisenberg manifold, which generalizes the results of Chakraborty and Shinha, and associate to it an energy functional on the set of projections, following the approach of Mathai-Rosenberg to non-linear sigma models. The spectral triples that we construct extend the We derive a lower bound for this energy functional that is linked on the topological charge of the projection which depends on the curvature of a compatible connection. A detailed study of this lower bound is given for the Kang projection in quantum Heisenberg manifolds. These results dis…
We introduce a notion of noncommutative Choquet simplex, or briefly an nc simplex, that generalizes the classical notion of a simplex. While every simplex is an nc simplex, there are many more nc simplices. They arise naturally from C*-algebras and in noncommutative dynamics. We characterize nc simplices in terms of their geometry and in terms of structural properties of their corresponding operator systems. There is a natural definition of nc Bauer simplex that generalizes the classical definition of a Bauer simplex. We show that a compact nc convex set is an nc Bauer simplex if and only if i…
