Sutured Floer homology, denoted by SFH, is an invariant of balanced sutured manifolds previously defined by the author. In this paper we give a formula that shows how this invariant changes under surface decompositions. In particular, if (M, γ)--> (M', γ') is a sutured manifold decomposition then SFH(M',γ') is a direct summand of SFH(M, γ). To prove the decomposition formula we give an algorithm that computes SFH(M,γ) from a balanced diagram defining (M,γ) that generalizes the algorithm of Sarkar and Wang.
As a corollary we obtain that if (M, γ) is taut then SFH(M,γ) is non-zero. Other applications include simple proofs of a result of Ozsvath and Szabo that link Floer homology detects the Thurston norm, and a theorem of Ni that knot Floer homology detects fibred knots. Our proofs do not make use of any contact geometry.
Moreover, using these methods we show that if K is a genus g knot in a rational homology 3-sphere Y whose Alexander polynomial has leading coefficient a_g non-zero and if the rank of \hat{HFK}(Y,K,g) < 4 then the knot complement admits a depth < 2 taut foliation transversal to the boundary of N(K).
These are the lecture notes for a course on Heegaard Floer homology held at PCMI in Summer 2019. We describe Heegaard diagrams, Heegaard Floer homology, knot Floer homology, and the relationship between the knot and 3-manifold invariants.
We review some recent results in knot concordance and homology cobordism. The proofs rely on various forms of Heegaard Floer homology. We also discuss related open problems.
A well-known conjecture of Rasmussen states that for any knot $K$ in $S^{3}$, the rank of the reduced Khovanov homology of $K$ is greater than or equal to the rank of the reduced knot Floer homology of $K$. This rank inequality is supposed to arise as the result of a spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to knot Floer homology. Using an oriented cube of resolutions construction for a homology theory related to knot Floer homology, we prove this conjecture.
In this paper, we compute the symplectic Floer homology of the figure eight knot. This provides first nontrivial knot with trivial symplectic Floer homology.
We prove that the rank of knot Floer homology detects the Hopf links, and generalize this result further to classify the links of the second smallest knot Floer homology. We also prove a knot Floer homology analog of arXiv:1910.04246v1 [math.GT] and give a partial answer to when the equality holds in the rank inequality between the knot Floer homology of a link and its sublinks.
For any link of two components in an integral homology sphere, we define an instanton Floer homology whose Euler characteristic is the linking number between the components of the link. We relate this Floer homology to the Kronheimer-Mrowka instanton Floer homology of knots. We also show that, for two-component links in the 3-sphere, the Floer homology does not vanish unless the link is split.
Inspired by work of Lipshitz-Sarkar, we show that the module structure on link Floer homology detects split links. Using results of Ni, Alishahi-Lipshitz, and Lipshitz-Sarkar, we establish an analogous detection result for sutured Floer homology.
This note corrects an erroneous statement in Lemma 3.8 of the author's paper Embedded Contact Homology and Seiberg-Witten Floer Homology IV which was published in Volume 14 of Geometry and Topology in 2009.
For any three-manifold presented as surgery on a framed link (L,Λ) in an integral homology sphere, Manolescu and Ozsváth construct a hypercube of chain complexes whose homology calculates the Heegaard Floer homology of Λ-framed surgery on Y. This carries a natural filtration that exists on any hypercube of chain complexes; we study the E_2 page of the associated spectral sequence, called Framed Floer homology. One purpose of this paper is to show that Framed Floer homology is an invariant of oriented framed links, but not an invariant of the surgered manifold. We discuss how this relates to an…
In this paper we answer the question posed by M.~Atiyah and give an explicit formula for Floer homology of Brieskorn homology spheres in terms of their branching sets over the 3--sphere. We further show how Floer homology is related to other invariants of knots and 3--manifolds, among which are the $\barμ$--invariant of W.~Neumann and L.~Siebenmann and the Jones polynomial. Essential progress is made in proving the homology cobordism invariance of our own $ν$--invariant.
We prove a basic inequality for the d-invariants of a splice of knots in homology spheres. As a result, we are able to prove a new relation on the rank of reduced Floer homology under maps between Seifert fibered homology spheres, improving results of the first and second authors. As a corollary, a degree one map between two aspherical Seifert homology spheres is homotopic to a homeomorphism if and only if the Heegaard Floer homologies are isomorphic.
We show that for a tangle $T$ with $-\partial^0T \cong \partial^1 T$ the Hochschild homology of the tangle Floer homology $\widetilde{\mathit{CT}}(T)$ is equivalent to the link Floer homology of the closure $T' = T/(-\partial^0T \sim \partial^1 T)$ of the tangle, linked with the tangle axis. In addition, we show that the action of the braid group on tangle Floer homology is faithful.
We construct cobordism maps on link Floer homology associated to decorated link cobordisms. The maps are defined on a curved chain homotopy type invariant. We describe the construction, and prove invariance. We also make a comparison with the graph TQFT for Heegaard Floer homology.
We use Heegaard Floer homology to define an invariant of homology cobordism. This invariant is isomorphic to a summand of the reduced Heegaard Floer homology of a rational homology sphere equipped with a spin structure and is analogous to Stoffregen's connected Seiberg-Witten Floer homology. We use this invariant to study the structure of the homology cobordism group and, along the way, compute the involutive correction terms for certain families of three-manifolds.
We define Floer homology theories for oriented, singular knots in S^3 and show that one of these theories can be defined combinatorially for planar singular knots.
We extend an approach of Beliakova for computing knot Floer homology and implement it in a publicly available computer program. We review the main programming and optimization methods used. Our program is then used to check that the Floer homology of a prime non-alternating knot with less than 12 crossings has no torsion.
It is known that knot Floer homology detects the genus and Alexander polynomial of a knot. We investigate whether knot Floer homology of $K$ detects more structure of minimal genus Seifert surfaces for $K$. We define an invariant of algebraically slice, genus one knots and provide examples to show that knot Floer homology does not detect this invariant. Finally, we remark that certain metabelian $L^2$-signatures bound this invariant from below.
We describe an invariant of a contact 3-manifold with convex boundary as an element of Juhász's sutured Floer homology. Our invariant generalizes the contact invariant in Heegaard Floer homology in the closed case, due to Ozsváth and Szabó. This version has some clarifications and new figures.
We develop a method of calculation for the symplectic Floer homology of composite knots. The symplectic Floer homology of knots defined in \cite{li} naturally admits an integer graded lifting, and it formulates a filtration and induced spectral sequence. Such a spectral sequence converges to the symplectic homology of knots in \cite{li}. We show that there is another spectral sequence which converges to the $\Z$-graded symplectic Floer homology for composite knots represented by braids.
We prove that, for a link $L$ in a rational homology 3--sphere, the link Floer homology detects the Thurston norm of its complement. This generalizes the previous results due to Ozsváth, Szabó and the author.
In a recent paper, Lin, Ruberman and Saveliev proved a splitting formula expressing the Seiberg-Witten invariant $λ_{SW}(X)$ of a smooth $4$-manifold with rational homology of $S^1\times S^3$ in terms of the Frøyshov invariant $h(X)$ and a Lefschetz number in reduced monopole Floer homology. In this note we observe that a similar splitting formula holds in reduced instanton Floer homology.
We consider a stabilized version of hat Heegaard Floer homology of a 3-manifold Y (i.e. the U=0 variant of Heegaard Floer homology for closed 3-manifolds). We give a combinatorial algorithm for constructing this invariant, starting from a Heegaard decomposition for Y, and give a combinatorial proof of its invariance properties.
In this paper, we explore the interplay between contact structures and sutured monopole Floer homology. First, we study the behavior of contact elements, which were defined by Baldwin and Sivek, under the operation of performing Floer excisions, which was introduced to the context of sutured monopole Floer homology by Kronheimer and Mrowka. We then compute the sutured monopole Floer homology of some special balanced sutured manifolds, using tools closely related to contact geometry. For application, we obtain an exact triangle for the oriented skein relation in monopole theory and derive a con…
We construct maps on hat Heegaard Floer homology for cobordisms decorated with graphs. The graph TQFT allows for cobordisms with disconnected ends. Our construction uses Juhász's sutured Floer TQFT. We compute the maps for several elementary graph cobordisms. As an application, we compute the action of the fundamental group on hat Heegaard Floer homology.
We provide an intergral lift of the combinatorial definition of Heegaard Floer homology for nice diagrams, and show that the proof of independence using convenient diagrams adapts to this setting.
This paper is a short introduction to the combinatorial version of tangle Floer homology defined in "Combinatorial tangle Floer homology". There are two equivalent definitions---one in terms of strand diagrams, and one in terms of bordered grid diagrams. We present both, discuss the correspondence, and carry out some explicit computations.
We establish three rank inequalities for the reduced flavor of Heegaard Floer homology of Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. Combining these inequalities with the known classifications of non-zero degree maps between Seifert fibered spaces, we prove that a map f from Y' to Y between Seifert homology spheres yields the inequality that |deg f| rank HFred(Y) is at most rank HFred(Y'). These inequalities are also applied in conjunction with an algorithm of Nemethi to give a method to solve the botany problem for the Heegaard Floer homology of these manifolds.
Continuing our previous work, we effectively compute connected Heegaard Floer homologies of two families of Brieskorn spheres realized as the boundaries of almost simple linear graphs. Using Floer theoretic invariants of Dai, Hom, Stoffregen, and Truong, we show that these Brieskorn spheres also generate infinite rank summands in the homology cobordism group. Our computations also have applications to the concordance of classical knots and $0$-concordance of $2$-knots.
In this paper, we introduce a sequence of invariants of a knot K in S^3: the knot Floer homology groups of the preimage of K in the m-fold cyclic branched cover over K. We exhibit the knot Floer homology in the m-fold branched cover as the categorification of a multiple of the Turaev torsion in the case where the m-fold branched cover is a rational homology sphere. In addition, when K is a 2-bridge knot, we prove that the knot Floer homology of the lifted knot in a particular Spin^c structure in the branched double cover matches the knot Floer homology of the original knot K in S^3. We conclud…
We compute the connected Heegaard Floer homology (defined by Hendricks, Hom, and Lidman) for a large class of 3-manifolds, including all linear combinations of Seifert fibered homology spheres. We show that for such manifolds, the connected Floer homology completely determines the local equivalence class of the associated $ι$-complex. Some identities relating the rank of the connected Floer homology to the Rokhlin invariant and the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant are also derived. Our computations are based on combinatorial models inspired by the work of Némethi on lattice homology.
We give new obstructions to the module structures arising in Heegaard Floer homology. As a corollary, we characterize the possible modules arising as the Heegaard Floer homology of an integer homology sphere with one-dimensional reduced Floer homology. Up to absolute grading shifts, there are only two. We use this corollary to show that the chain complex depicted by Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó to argue that there is no algebraic obstruction to the existence of knots with trivial $ε$ invariant and non-trivial $Υ$ invariant cannot be realized as the knot Floer complex of a knot.
We make use of link Floer homology to study cobordisms between links embedded in 4-dimensional ribbon homology cobordisms. Combining results of Daemi--Lidman--Vela-Vick--Wong and Zemke, we show that ribbon homology concordances induce split injections on $\mathcal{HFL}^-$. We also make use of the torsion submodule of $\text{HFL}^-$ to give restrictions on the number of critical points in ribbon homology concordances.
Motivated by a result of L.P. Roberts on rational blow-downs in Heegaard-Floer homology, we study such operations along 3-manifolds that arise as branched double covers of $S^{3}$ along several non-alternating, slice knots.
We give a complete calculation of the infinity flavor of Heegaard Floer homology with mod 2 coefficients for all three-manifolds and torsion Spin^c structures. The computation agrees with the conjectured calculation of Ozsvath and Szabo. This therefore establishes an isomorphism with Mark's cup homology mod 2.
Khovanov-Floer theories are a class of homological link invariants which admit spectral sequences from Khovanov homology. They include Khovanov homology, Szab{ó}'s geometric link homology, singular instanton homology, and various Floer theories applied to branched double covers. In this short note we show that certain strong Khovanov-Floer theories, including Szab{ó} homology and singular instanton homology, are invariant under Conway mutation. This confirms conjectures of Seed and Lambert-Cole. Along the way we prove two other conjectures about the structure of Szab{ó} homology.
We extend knot Floer homology to string links in D^{2} \times I and to d-based links in arbitrary three manifolds, without any hypothesis on the null-homology of the components. As for knot Floer homology we obtain a description of the Euler characteristic of the resulting homology groups (in D^{2} \times I) in terms of the torsion of the string link. Additionally, a state summation approach is described using the equivalent of Kauffman states. Furthermore, we examine the situtation for braids, prove that for alternating string links the Euler characteristic determines the homology, and develo…
We show that if a positive integral surgery on a knot K inside a homology sphere X with Seifert genus g(K) results in an induced knot K_n in X_n(K)=Y which has simple Floer homology, we should have n>=2g(K). Moreover, if X is the standard sphere, the three-manifold Y is a L-space and the Heegaard Floer homology groups of K are determined by its Alexander polynomial.
In a previous paper, Vértesi and the first author used grid-like Heegaard diagrams to define tangle Floer homology, which associates to a tangle $T$ a differential graded bimodule $\widetilde{\mathrm{CT}} (T)$. If $L$ is obtained by gluing together $T_1, \dotsc, T_m$, then the knot Floer homology $\hat{\mathrm{HFK}}(L)$ of $L$ can be recovered from $\widetilde{\mathrm{CT}} (T_1), \dotsc, \widetilde{\mathrm{CT}} (T_m)$. In the present paper, we prove combinatorially that tangle Floer homology satisfies unoriented and oriented skein relations, generalizing the skein exact triangles for knot Floe…
The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of knot Floer homology under Murasugi sum. We establish a graded version of Ni's isomorphism between the extremal knot Floer homology of Murasugi sum of two links and the tensor product of the extremal knot Floer homology groups of the two summands. We further prove that $τ=g$ for each summand if and only if $τ=g$ holds for the Murasugi sum (with $τ$ and $g$ defined appropriately for multi-component links). Some applications are presented.
Using bordered Floer theory, we give a combinatorial construction and proof of invariance for the hat version of Heegaard Floer homology. As a part of the proof, we also establish combinatorially the invariance of the linear-categorical representation of the strongly-based mapping class groupoid given by the same theory.
We show that every 3--manifold admits a Heegaard diagram in which a truncated version of Heegaard Floer homology (when the holomorpic disks pass through the basepoints at most once) can be computed combinatorially.
