We extend the notion of thin multiple Heegaard splittings of a link in a 3-manifold to take into consideration not only compressing disks but also cut-disks for the Heegaard surfaces. We prove that if H is a c-strongly compressible bridge surface for a link K contained in a closed orientable irreducible 3-manifold M then one of the following is satisfied:
H is stabilized,
H is meridionally stabilized,
H is perturbed, a component of K is removable, M contains an essential meridional surface.
We produce embeddings of knots in thin position that admit compressible thin levels. We also find the bridge number of tangle sums where each tangle is high distance.
In this paper we find infinitely many lattices in $SL(4,\mathbb{R})$ each of which contains thin subgroups commensurable with the figure-eight knot group.
We show that any non-minimal bridge decomposition of a torus knot is stabilized and that $n$-bridge decompositions of a torus knot are unique for any integer $n$. This implies that a knot in a bridge position is a torus knot if and only if there exists a torus containing the knot such that it intersects the bridge sphere in two essential loops.
We show that every thin position for a connected sum of small knots is obtained in an obvious way: place each summand in thin position so that no two summands intersect the same level surface, then connect the lowest minimum of each summand to the highest maximum of the adjacent summand below.
We define a new notion of thin position for a graph in a 3-manifold which combines the ideas of thin position for manifolds first originated by Scharlemann and Thompson with the idea of thin position for knots first originated by Gabai. This thin position has the property that connect summing annuli and pairs-of-pants show up as thin levels. In a forthcoming paper, this new thin position allows us to define two new families of invariants of knots, links, and graphs in 3-manifolds. The invariants in one family are similar to bridge number and the invariants in the other family are similar to Ga…
We use bordered Floer homology to give a formula for the knot Floer homology of any (p, pn+1)-cable of a thin knot K in terms of Delta_K(t), tau(K), p, and n. We also give a formula for the Ozsvath-Szabo concordance invariant tau(K_{p, pn+1}) in terms of tau(K), p, and n, and a formula for tau(K_{p,q}) for almost all relatively prime p and q.
We find an infinite family of Seifert fibered surgeries on strongly invertible knots which do not have primitive/Seifert positions. Each member of the family is obtained from a trefoil knot after alternate twists along a pair of seiferters for a Seifert fibered surgery on a trefoil knot.
We give a locally minimal, but not globally minimal bridge position of a knot, that is, an unstabilized, nonminimal bridge position of a knot. It implies that a bridge position cannot always be simplified so that the bridge number monotonically decreases to the minimal.
A regular circle-valued Morse function on the knot complement C(K) = S^3\K is a function f from C(K) to S^1 which separates critical points and which behaves nicely in a neighborhood of the knot. Such a function induces a handle decomposition on the knot exterior E(K) = S^3\N (K), with the property that every regular level surface contains a Seifert surface for the knot. We rearrange the handles in such a way that the regular surfaces are as simple as possible. To make this precise the concept of circular width for E(K) is introduced. When E(K) is endowed with a handle decomposition which real…
Let k be a knot in S3. In [8], H.N. Howards and J. Schultens introduced a method to construct a manifold decomposition of double branched cover of (S3, k) from a thin position of k. In this article, we will prove that if a thin position of k induces a thin decomposition of double branched cover of (S3,k) by Howards and Schultens' method, then the thin position is the sum of prime summands by stacking a thin position of one of prime summands of k on top of a thin position of another prime summand, and so on. Therefore, k holds the nearly additivity of knot width (i.e. for k = k1#k2, w(k) = w(k1…
We show that if a knot or link has n thin levels when put in thin position then its exterior contains a collection of n disjoint, non-parallel, planar, meridional, essential surfaces. A corollary is that there are at least n/3 tetrahedra in any triangulation of the complement of such a knot.
In this paper, we study on knots and closed incompressible surfaces in the 3-sphere via Morse functions. We show that both of knots and closed incompressible surfaces can be isotoped into a "related Morse position" simultaneously. As an application, we have following results. *Smallness of Montesinos tangles with length two and Kinoshita's theta curve *Classification of closed incompressible and meridionally incompressible surfaces in 2-bridge theta-curve and handcuff graph complements and the complements of links which admit Hopf tangle decompositions.
We are giving tables of quasi-alternating knots with $8\le n \le 12$ crossings. As the obstructions for a knot to be quasialternating we used homology thickness with regards to Khovanov homology, odd homology, and Heegaard-Floer homology $\widehat{HFK}$. Except knots which are homology thick, so cannot be quasialternating, by using the results of our computations [JaSa1], for one of knots which are homology thin, knot $11n_{50}$, J. Greene proved that it is not quasi-alternating, so this is the first example of homologically thin knot which is not quasi-alternating [Gr]. In this paper we provi…
In this paper, we compute the Khovanov homology over \Q for (p,-p,q) pretzel knots for odd values of p from 3 to 15 and arbitrarily large q. We provide a conjecture for the general form of the Khovanov homology of (p,-p,q) pretzel knots. These computations reveal that these knots have thin Khovanov homology (over \Q and \Z). Because Greene has shown that these knots are not quasi-alternating, this provides an infinite class of non-quasi-alternating knots with thin Khovanov homology.
Thin position for knots in the 3-sphere was introduced by Gabai and has been used in a variety of contexts. We conjecture an analogue to a theorem of Schubert and Schultens concerning the bridge number of satellite knots. For a satellite knot K, we use the companion torus T to provide a lower bound for w(K), proving the conjecture for K with a 2-bridge companion. As a corollary, we find thin position for any satellite knot with a braid pattern and 2-bridge companion.
J. Hempel's definition of the distance of a Heegaard surface generalizes to a complexity for a knot which is in bridge position with respect to a Heegaard surface. Our main result is that the distance of a knot in bridge position is bounded above by twice the genus, plus the number of boundary components, of an essential surface in the knot complement. As a consequence knots constructed via sufficiently high powers of pseudo-Anosov maps have minimal bridge presentations which are thin.
This paper concerns thin presentations of knots K in closed 3-manifolds M^3 which produce S^3 by Dehn surgery, for some slope gamma. If M does not have a lens space as a connected summand, we first prove that all such thin presentations, with respect to any spine of M have only local maxima. If M is a lens space and K has an essential thin presentation with respect to a given standard spine (of lens space M) with only local maxima, then we show that K is a 0-bridge or 1-bridge braid in M; furthermore, we prove the minimal intersection between K and such spines to be at least three, and finally…
Any knot $K$ in genus-$1$ $1$-bridge position can be moved by isotopy to lie in a union of $n$ parallel tori tubed by $n-1$ tubes so that $K$ intersects each tube in two spanning arcs, which we call a leveling of the position. The minimal $n$ for which this is possible is an invariant of the position, called the level number. In this work, we describe the leveling by the braid group on two points in the torus, which yields a numerical invariant of the position, called the $(1, 1)$-length. We show that the $(1, 1)$-length equals the level number. We then find braid descriptions for $(1,1)$-posi…
We determine p-colorability of the paradromic rings. These rings arise by generalizing the well-known experiment of bisecting a Mobius strip. Instead of joining the ends with a single half twist, use $m$ twists, and, rather than bisecting ($n = 2$), cut the strip into $n$ sections. We call the resulting collection of thin strips $P(m,n)$. By replacing each thin strip with its midline, we think of $P(m,n)$ as a link, that is, a collection of circles in space. Using the notion of $p$-colorability from knot theory, we determine, for each $m$ and $n$, which primes $p$ can be used to color $P(m,n)$…
We examine geometric properties of a knot J that are unchanged by taking a (p,q)-cable K of J. Specifically, we relate w(K) to w(J), where w(K) is the width of K in the sense of Gabai. We use this information to demonstrate that thin position is a minimal bridge position of J if and only if the same is true for K, and more generally we show that any thin position of K is an "obvious" cabling of a thin position of J. We conclude by proving that J is meridionally small (mp-small) if and only if K is meridionally small (mp-small), and if J is mp-small and every non-minimal bridge position of J is…
Let $K$ be a polygonal knot in general position with vertex set $V$. A \emph{generic quadrisecant} of $K$ is a line that is disjoint from the set $V$ and intersects $K$ in exactly four distinct points. We give an upper bound for the number of generic quadrisecants of a polygonal knot $K$ in general position. This upper bound is in terms of the number of edges of $K$.
We present computational results about quasi-alternating knots and links and odd homology obtained by looking at link families in the Conway notation. More precisely, we list quasi-alternating links up to 12 crossings and the first examples of quasi-alternating knots and links with at least two different minimal diagrams, where one is quasi-alternating and the other is not. We provide examples of knots and links with $n\le 12$ crossings which are homologically thin and have no minimal quasi-alternating diagrams. These links are candidates for homologically thin links that are not quasi-alterna…
It is a consequence of theorems of Gordon-Reid [Tangle decompositions of tunnel number one knots and links, J. Knot Theory and its Ramifications, 4 (1995) 389-409] and Thompson [Thin position and bridge number for knots in the 3-sphere, Topology, 36 (1997) 505-507] that a tunnel number one knot, if put in thin position, will also be in bridge position. We show that in such a thin presentation, the tunnel can be made level so that it lies in a level sphere. This settles a question raised by Morimoto [A note on unknotting tunnels for 2-bridge knots, Bulletin of Faculty of Engineering Takushoku U…
A knot is an a-small knot if its exterior does not contain closed incompressible surfaces disjoint from some incompressible Seifert surface for the knot. Using circular thin position for knots we prove that the handle number is additive under the connected sum of two a-small knots. As a consequence the Morse-Novikov number turns out to be additive under the connected sum of two a-small knots.
Abby Thompson proved that if a link $K$ is in thin position but not in bridge position then the knot complement contains an essential meridional planar surface, and she asked whether some thin level surface must be essential. This note is to give a positive answer to this question, showing that the if a link is in thin position but not bridge position then a thinnest level surface is essential. A theorem of Rieck and Sedgwick follows as a consequence, which says that thin position of a connected sum of small knots comes in the obvious way.
We give an alternative proof of a result of Kobayashi and Saeki that every genus one $1$-bridge position of a non-trivial $2$-bridge knot is a stabilization.
A bridge position of a knot is said to be perturbed if there exists a cancelling pair of bridge disks. Motivated by the examples of knots admitting unperturbed strongly irreducible non-minimal bridge positions due to Jang-Kobayashi-Ozawa-Takao, we derive examples of unperturbed weakly reducible non-minimal bridge positions. Also, a bridge version of Gordon's Conjecture is proposed: the connected sum of unperturbed bridge positions is unperturbed.
We prove that every $\mathbb{Z}_2$H-thin link has no $2^k$-torsion for $k>1$ in its Khovanov homology. Together with previous results by Eun Soo Lee and the author, this implies that integer Khovanov homology of non-split alternating links is completely determined by the Jones polynomial and signature. Our proof is based on establishing an algebraic relation between Bockstein and Turner differentials on Khovanov homology over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We conjecture that a similar relation exists between the corresponding spectral sequences.
This paper generalizes the definition of a Heegaard splitting to unify Scharlemann and Thomspon's concept of thin position for 3-manifolds, Gabai's thin position for knots, and Rubinstein's almost normal surface theory. This gives generalizations of theorems of Scharlemann, Thompson, Rubinstein, and Stocking. In the final section, we use this machinery to produce an algorithm to determine the bridge number of a knot, provided thin position for the knot coincides with bridge position. We also present several finiteness and algorithmic results about Dehn fillings with "small" Heegaard genus.
We construct an infinite family of hyperbolic, homologically thin knots that are not quasi-alternating. To establish the latter, we argue that the branched double-cover of each knot in the family does not bound a negative definite 4-manifold with trivial first homology and bounded second betti number. This fact depends in turn on information from the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, which we establish by way of a relationship to, and calculation of, the Turaev torsion.
Unknotting numbers for torus knots and links are well known. In this paper, we present a method for determining the position of unknotting number crossing changes in a toric braid B(p, q) such that the closure of the resultant braid is equivalent to the trivial knot or link. Also, we provide a simple proof for the important result K(p, q) \sim K(q, p) using the results obtained from this method.
We will discuss a method for visual presentation of knotted surfaces in the four space, by examining a number and a position of its Morse's critical points. Using this method, we will investigate surface-knot with one critical point of index 1. Then we show infinitely many mutually distinct surface-knots that has an embedding with two critical points of index 1. Next we define a long flat for a banded link for any surface-knot and show diagrammatically a long flat form of $n$-twist-spun $(2,t)$-torus knots.
We consider the recently introduced knotting-unknotting game, in which two players take turns resolving crossings in a knot diagram which initially is missing all its crossing information. Once the knot is fully resolved, the winner is decided by whether the knot is equivalent to the unknot. In this paper we determine which player wins under perfect play in the initial positions (knot shadows) that are guaranteed to produce rational knots or sums of rational knots. This is accomplished in part by an analysis of the effects of pseudo Reidemeister moves on positions, and a computer verification …
We study Kauffman's model of folded ribbon knots: knots made of a thin strip of paper folded flat in the plane. The ribbonlength is the length to width ratio of such a folded ribbon knot. We show for any knot or link type that there exist constants $c_1, c_2>0$ such that the ribbonlength is bounded above by $c_1\cdot Cr(K)^2$, and also by $c_2\cdot Cr(K)^{3/2}$. We use a different method for each bound. The constant $c_1$ is quite small in comparison to $c_2$, and the first bound is lower than the second for knots and links with $Cr(K)\leq$ 12,748.
Let M be $S^3$, $S^1\times S^2$, or a lens space L(p,q), and let k be a (1,1)-knot in M, i.e., a knot which is of 1-bridge with respect to a Heegaard torus. We show that if there is a closed meridionally incompressible surface in the complement of k, then the surface and the knot can be put in a special position, namely, the surface is the boundary of a regular neighborhood of a toroidal graph, and the knot is level with respect to that graph. As an application we show that for any such M there exist tunnel number one knots which are not (1,1)-knots.
Suppose a knot in a $3$-manifold is in $n$-bridge position. We consider a reduction of the knot along a bridge disk $D$ and show that the result is an $(n-1)$-bridge position if and only if there is a bridge disk $E$ such that $(D, E)$ is a cancelling pair. We apply this to an unknot $K$, in $n$-bridge position with respect to a bridge sphere $S$ in the $3$-sphere, to consider the relationship between a bridge disk $D$ and a disk in the $3$-sphere that $K$ bounds. We show that if a reduction of $K$ along $D$ yields an $(n-1)$-bridge position, then $K$ bounds a disk that contains $D$ as a subdi…
We introduce two numerical invariants, the waist and the trunk of knots. The waist of a closed incompressible surface in the complement of a knot is defined as the minimal intersection number of all compressing disks for the surface in the 3-sphere and the knot. Then the waist of a knot is defined as the maximal waist of all closed incompressible surfaces in the complement of the knot. On the other hand, the trunk of a knot is defined as the minimal number of the intersection of the most thick level 2-sphere and the knot over all Morse positions of the knot. In this paper, we obtain an inequal…
A knot in the 3-sphere in genus-1 1-bridge position (called a (1,1)-position) can be described by an element of the braid group of two points in the torus. Our main results tell how to translate between a braid group element and the sequence of slope invariants of the upper and lower tunnels of the (1,1)-position. After using them to verify previous calculations of the slope invariants for all tunnels of 2-bridge knots and (1,1)-tunnels of torus knots, we obtain characterizations of the slope sequences of tunnels of 2-bridge knots, and of a class of tunnels we call toroidal. The main results l…
Suppose M is a closed irreducible orientable 3-manifold, K is a knot in M, P and Q are bridge surfaces for K and K is not removable with respect to Q. We show that either Q is equivalent to P or $d(K,P) \leq 2-χ(Q-K)$. If K is not a two bridge knot, then the result holds even if K is removable with respect to Q. As a corollary we show that if a knot in the 3-sphere has high distance with respect to some bridge sphere and low bridge number, then the knot has a unique minimal bridge position.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple closed curve on the boundary of a genus two handlebody to decompose the handlebody into (torus with one boundary component times [0,1]. We use this condition to decide whether a simple closed curve on a genus two Heegaard surface is a GOF-knot (genus one fibered knot) which induces the Heegaard splitting. By using this, we determine the number and the positions with respect to the Heegaard splittings of GOF-knots in the 3-manifolds with reducible genus two Heegaard splittings. This is another proof of results of Morimoto and Baker.
Suppose that every non-minimal bridge position of a knot $K$ is perturbed. We show that if $L$ is a $(2, 2q)$-cable link of $K$, then every non-minimal bridge position of $L$ is also perturbed.
The (untwisted) oriented cube of resolutions for knot Floer homology assigns a complex $C_{F}(S)$ to a singular resolution $S$ of a knot $K$. Manolescu conjectured that when $S$ is in braid position, the homology $H_{*}(C_{F}(S))$ is isomorphic to the HOMFLY-PT homology of $S$. Together with a naturality condition on the induced edge maps, this conjecture would prove the spectral sequence from HOMFLY-PT homology to knot Floer homology. Using a basepoint filtration on $C_{F}(S)$, a recursion formula for HOMFLY-PT homology, and additional $sl_{n}$-like differentials on $C_{F}(S)$, we prove this …
We call a pair (K, m) of a knot K in the 3-sphere S^3 and an integer m a Seifert fibered surgery if m-surgery on K yields a Seifert fiber space. For most known Seifert fibered surgeries (K, m), K can be embedded in a genus 2 Heegaard surface of S^3 in a primitive/Seifert position, the concept introduced by Dean as a natural extension of primitive/primitive position defined by Berge. Recently Guntel has given an infinite family of Seifert fibered surgeries each of which has distinct primitive/Seifert positions. In this paper we give yet other infinite families of Seifert fibered surgeries with …
Using the conjugation symmetry on Heegaard Floer complexes, we define a three-manifold invariant called involutive Heegaard Floer homology, which is meant to correspond to $\mathbb{Z}_4$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology. Further, we obtain two new invariants of homology cobordism, $\underline{d}$ and $\bar{d}$, and two invariants of smooth knot concordance, $\underline{V}_0$ and $\overline{V}_0$. We also develop a formula for the involutive Heegaard Floer homology of large integral surgeries on knots. We give explicit calculations in the case of L-space knots and thin knots. In partic…
First, we extend Otal's result for the trivial knot to trivial spatial graphs, namely, we show that for any bridge tangle decomposing sphere $S^2$ for a trivial spatial graph $Γ$, there exists a 2-sphere $F$ such that $F$ contains $Γ$ and $F$ intersects $S^2$ in a single loop. Next, we introduce two invariants for spatial graphs. As a generalization of the bridge number for knots, we define the {\em bridge string number} $bs(Γ)$ of a spatial graph $Γ$ as the minimal number of $|Γ\cap S^2|$ for all bridge tangle decomposing sphere $S^2$. As a spatial version of the representativity for a graph …
We re-derive Manolescu's unoriented skein exact triangle for knot Floer homology over F_2 combinatorially using grid diagrams, and extend it to the case with Z coefficients by sign refinements. Iteration of the triangle gives a cube of resolutions that converges to the knot Floer homology of an oriented link. Finally, we re-establish the homological sigma-thinness of quasi-alternating links.
