J. Hempel's definition of the distance of a Heegaard surface generalizes to a complexity for a knot which is in bridge position with respect to a Heegaard surface. Our main result is that the distance of a knot in bridge position is bounded above by twice the genus, plus the number of boundary components, of an essential surface in the knot complement. As a consequence knots constructed via sufficiently high powers of pseudo-Anosov maps have minimal bridge presentations which are thin.
A bridge position of a knot is said to be perturbed if there exists a cancelling pair of bridge disks. Motivated by the examples of knots admitting unperturbed strongly irreducible non-minimal bridge positions due to Jang-Kobayashi-Ozawa-Takao, we derive examples of unperturbed weakly reducible non-minimal bridge positions. Also, a bridge version of Gordon's Conjecture is proposed: the connected sum of unperturbed bridge positions is unperturbed.
Suppose a knot in a $3$-manifold is in $n$-bridge position. We consider a reduction of the knot along a bridge disk $D$ and show that the result is an $(n-1)$-bridge position if and only if there is a bridge disk $E$ such that $(D, E)$ is a cancelling pair. We apply this to an unknot $K$, in $n$-bridge position with respect to a bridge sphere $S$ in the $3$-sphere, to consider the relationship between a bridge disk $D$ and a disk in the $3$-sphere that $K$ bounds. We show that if a reduction of $K$ along $D$ yields an $(n-1)$-bridge position, then $K$ bounds a disk that contains $D$ as a subdi…
We give a locally minimal, but not globally minimal bridge position of a knot, that is, an unstabilized, nonminimal bridge position of a knot. It implies that a bridge position cannot always be simplified so that the bridge number monotonically decreases to the minimal.
Suppose that every non-minimal bridge position of a knot $K$ is perturbed. We show that if $L$ is a $(2, 2q)$-cable link of $K$, then every non-minimal bridge position of $L$ is also perturbed.
We show that any non-minimal bridge decomposition of a torus knot is stabilized and that $n$-bridge decompositions of a torus knot are unique for any integer $n$. This implies that a knot in a bridge position is a torus knot if and only if there exists a torus containing the knot such that it intersects the bridge sphere in two essential loops.
Tomova, along with results of Bachman and Schleimer, showed that any high distance knot has a stair-step bridge spectrum. In this paper, we compute the bridge spectra and distance of generalized Montesinos knots. In particular, we produce the first example of a class of knots which attain the stair-step bridge spectra but are not high distance, by computing the bridge spectra of certain pretzel knots and Montesinos knots.
We give a new characterization of symplectic surfaces in CP^2 via bridge trisections. Specifically, a minimal genus surface in CP^2 is smoothly isotopic to a symplectic surface if and only if it is smoothly isotopic to a surface in transverse bridge position. We discuss several potential applications, including the classification of unit 2-knots, establishing the triviality of Gluck twists, the symplectic isotopy problem, Auroux's proof that every symplectic 4-manifold is a branched cover over CP^2, and the existence of Weinstein trisections. The proof exploits a well-known connection between …
We extend techniques due to Pardon to show that there is a lower bound on the distortion of a knot in $\mathbb{R}^3$ proportional to the minimum of the bridge distance and the bridge number of the knot. We also exhibit an infinite family of knots for which the minimum of the bridge distance and the bridge number is unbounded and Pardon's lower bound is constant.

We prove that if the distance of a bridge decomposition of a link with respect to a Heegaard splitting of a $3$-manifold is at least $6$, then the Goeritz group is a finite group.
We calculate the bridge distance for $m$-bridge knots/links in the $3$-sphere with sufficiently complicated $2m$-plat projections. In particular we show that if the underlying braid of the plat has $n - 1$ rows of twists and all its exponents have absolute value greater than or equal to three then the distance of the bridge sphere is exactly $\lceil n/(2(m - 2)) \rceil$, where $\lceil x \rceil$ is the smallest integer greater than or equal to $x$. As a corollary, we conclude that if such a diagram has more than $4m(m-2)$ rows then the bridge sphere defining the plat projection is the unique mi…
Suppose M is a closed irreducible orientable 3-manifold, K is a knot in M, P and Q are bridge surfaces for K and K is not removable with respect to Q. We show that either Q is equivalent to P or $d(K,P) \leq 2-χ(Q-K)$. If K is not a two bridge knot, then the result holds even if K is removable with respect to Q. As a corollary we show that if a knot in the 3-sphere has high distance with respect to some bridge sphere and low bridge number, then the knot has a unique minimal bridge position.
If a knot K in a closed, orientable 3-manifold M has a bridge surface T with distance at least 3 in the curve complex of T - K, then the genus of any essential surface in its exterior with non-empty, non-meridional boundary gives rise to an upper bound for the bridge number of K with respect to T. In particular, a nontrivial, aspherical, and atoroidal knot K with such a bridge surface has its bridge number bounded by 5 if K has a non-trivial reducing surgery; 6 if K has a non-trivial toroidal surgery; and 4g + 2 if K is null-homologous and has Seifert genus g.
A bridge sphere is said to be keen weakly reducible if it admits a unique pair of disjoint compressing disks on opposite sides. In particular, such a bridge sphere is weakly reducible, not perturbed, and not topologically minimal in the sense of David Bachman. In terms of Jennifer Schultens' width complex, a link in bridge position with respect to a keen weakly reducible bridge sphere is distance one away from a local minimum. In this paper, we give infinitely many examples of keen weakly reducible bridge spheres for links in $b$ bridge position for $b \geq 4.$
In this paper, we characterize all links in the 3-sphere with bridge number at least three that have a bridge sphere of distance two. We show that a link L has a bridge sphere of distance at most two then it falls into at least one of three categories: (1) The exterior of L contains an essential meridional sphere. (2) L can be decomposed as a tangle product of a Montesinos tangle with an essential tangle in a way that respects the bridge surface and either the Montesinos tangle is rational or the essential tangle contains an incompressible, boundary-incompressible annulus. (3) L is obtained by…
We show that for any given closed orientable 3-manifold M with a Heegaard surface of genus g, any positive integers b and n, there exists a knot K in M which admits a (g,b)-bridge splitting of distance greater than n with respect to the Heegaard surface except for (g,b) = (0,1), (0,2).
We modify an approach of Johnson to define the distance of a bridge splitting of a knot in a 3-manifold using the dual curve complex and pants complex of the bridge surface. This distance can be used to determine a complexity, which becomes constant after a sufficient number of stabilizations and perturbations, yielding an invariant of the manifold-knot pair. We also give evidence toward the relationship between the pants distance of a bridge splitting and the hyperbolic volume of the exterior of a knot.
Given integers b, c, g, and n, we construct a manifold M containing a c-component link L so that there is a bridge surface Sigma for (M,L) of genus g that intersects L in 2b points and has distance at least n. More generally, given two possibly disconnected surfaces S and S', each with some even number (possibly zero) of marked points, and integers b, c, g, and n, we construct a compact, orientable manifold M with boundary S \cup S' such that M contains a c-component tangle T with a bridge surface Sigma of genus g that separates the boundary of M into S and S', |T \cap Sigma|=2b and T intersec…
We give an alternative proof of a result of Kobayashi and Saeki that every genus one $1$-bridge position of a non-trivial $2$-bridge knot is a stabilization.
Using square bridge position, Akbulut-Ozbagci and later Arikan gave algorithms both of which construct an explicit compatible open book decomposition on a closed contact $3$-manifold which results from a contact $(\pm 1)$-surgery on a Legendrian link in the standard contact $3$-sphere. In this article, we introduce the ``generalized square bridge position'' for a Legendrian link in the standard contact $5$-sphere and partially generalize this result to the dimension five via an algorithm which constructs relative open book decompositions on relative contact pairs.
First, we extend Otal's result for the trivial knot to trivial spatial graphs, namely, we show that for any bridge tangle decomposing sphere $S^2$ for a trivial spatial graph $Γ$, there exists a 2-sphere $F$ such that $F$ contains $Γ$ and $F$ intersects $S^2$ in a single loop. Next, we introduce two invariants for spatial graphs. As a generalization of the bridge number for knots, we define the {\em bridge string number} $bs(Γ)$ of a spatial graph $Γ$ as the minimal number of $|Γ\cap S^2|$ for all bridge tangle decomposing sphere $S^2$. As a spatial version of the representativity for a graph …
Abby Thompson proved that if a link $K$ is in thin position but not in bridge position then the knot complement contains an essential meridional planar surface, and she asked whether some thin level surface must be essential. This note is to give a positive answer to this question, showing that the if a link is in thin position but not bridge position then a thinnest level surface is essential. A theorem of Rieck and Sedgwick follows as a consequence, which says that thin position of a connected sum of small knots comes in the obvious way.
Suppose $K$ is a knot in $S^3$ with bridge number $n$ and bridge distance greater than $2n$. We show that there are at most ${2n\choose n}$ distinct minimal genus Heegaard splittings of $S^3\setminusη(K)$. These splittings can be divided into two families. Two splittings from the same family become equivalent after at most one stabilization. If $K$ has bridge distance at least $4n$, then two splittings from different families become equivalent only after $n-1$ stabilizations. Further, we construct representatives of the isotopy classes of the minimal tunnel systems for $K$ corresponding to the…
Thin position for knots in the 3-sphere was introduced by Gabai and has been used in a variety of contexts. We conjecture an analogue to a theorem of Schubert and Schultens concerning the bridge number of satellite knots. For a satellite knot K, we use the companion torus T to provide a lower bound for w(K), proving the conjecture for K with a 2-bridge companion. As a corollary, we find thin position for any satellite knot with a braid pattern and 2-bridge companion.
It is a consequence of theorems of Gordon-Reid [Tangle decompositions of tunnel number one knots and links, J. Knot Theory and its Ramifications, 4 (1995) 389-409] and Thompson [Thin position and bridge number for knots in the 3-sphere, Topology, 36 (1997) 505-507] that a tunnel number one knot, if put in thin position, will also be in bridge position. We show that in such a thin presentation, the tunnel can be made level so that it lies in a level sphere. This settles a question raised by Morimoto [A note on unknotting tunnels for 2-bridge knots, Bulletin of Faculty of Engineering Takushoku U…
We show that the distance of a link $K$ with respect to a bridge surface of any genus determines a lower bound on the genus of essential surfaces and Heegaard surfaces in the manifolds that result from non-trivial Dehn surgeries on the knot. In particular, knots with high bridge distance do not admit non-trivial non-hyperbolic surgeries or non-trivial cosmetic surgeries. We further show that if a knot has bridge distance at least 3 then its bridge number is bounded above by a function of Seifert genus, or indeed by the genus of (almost) any essential surface or Heegaard surface in the surgered…
We show that there are hyperbolic tunnel-number one knots with arbitrarily high bridge number and that "most" tunnel-number one knots are not one-bridge with respect to an unknotted torus. The proof relies on a connection between bridge number and a certain distance in the curve complex of a genus-two surface.
Suppose a link K in a 3-manifold M is in bridge position with respect to two different bridge surfaces P and Q, both of which are c-weakly incompressible in the complement of K. Then either P and Q can be properly isotoped to intersect in a nonempty collection of curves that are essential (including non-meridional) on both surfaces, or K is a Conway product with respect to an incompressible Conway sphere that naturally decomposes both P and Q into bridge surfaces for the respective factor link(s).
This paper generalizes the definition of a Heegaard splitting to unify Scharlemann and Thomspon's concept of thin position for 3-manifolds, Gabai's thin position for knots, and Rubinstein's almost normal surface theory. This gives generalizations of theorems of Scharlemann, Thompson, Rubinstein, and Stocking. In the final section, we use this machinery to produce an algorithm to determine the bridge number of a knot, provided thin position for the knot coincides with bridge position. We also present several finiteness and algorithmic results about Dehn fillings with "small" Heegaard genus.
We examine geometric properties of a knot J that are unchanged by taking a (p,q)-cable K of J. Specifically, we relate w(K) to w(J), where w(K) is the width of K in the sense of Gabai. We use this information to demonstrate that thin position is a minimal bridge position of J if and only if the same is true for K, and more generally we show that any thin position of K is an "obvious" cabling of a thin position of J. We conclude by proving that J is meridionally small (mp-small) if and only if K is meridionally small (mp-small), and if J is mp-small and every non-minimal bridge position of J is…
We show that if $K$ is a knot in $S^3$ and $Σ$ is a bridge sphere for $K$ with high distance and $2n$ punctures, the number of perturbations of $K$ required to interchange the two balls bounded by $Σ$ via an isotopy is $n$. We also construct a knot with two different bridge spheres with $2n$ and $2n-1$ bridges respectively for which any common perturbation has at least $3n-1$ bridges. We generalize both of these results to bridge surfaces for knots in any 3-manifold.
Given a connected cobordism between two knots in the 3-sphere, our main result is an inequality involving torsion orders of the knot Floer homology of the knots, and the number of local maxima and the genus of the cobordism. This has several topological applications: The torsion order gives lower bounds on the bridge index and the band-unlinking number of a knot, the fusion number of a ribbon knot, and the number of minima appearing in a slice disk of a knot. It also gives a lower bound on the number of bands appearing in a ribbon concordance between two knots. Our bounds on the bridge index a…
We adapt work of Kirby-Thompson and Zupan to define an integer invariant $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{T})$ of a bridge trisection $\mathcal{T}$ of a smooth surface $\mathcal{K}$ in $S^4$ or $B^4$. We show that when $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{T})=0$, then the surface $\mathcal{K}$ is unknotted. We also show show that for a trisection $\mathcal{T}$ of an irreducible surface, bridge number produces a lower bound for $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{T})$. Consequently, $\mathcal{L}$ can be arbitrarily large.
We show that given a trivalent graph in $S^3$, either the graph complement contains an essential almost meridional planar surface or thin position for the graph is also bridge position. This can be viewed as an extension of a theorem of Thompson to graphs. It follows that any graph complement always contains a useful planar surface.
Any knot $K$ in genus-$1$ $1$-bridge position can be moved by isotopy to lie in a union of $n$ parallel tori tubed by $n-1$ tubes so that $K$ intersects each tube in two spanning arcs, which we call a leveling of the position. The minimal $n$ for which this is possible is an invariant of the position, called the level number. In this work, we describe the leveling by the braid group on two points in the torus, which yields a numerical invariant of the position, called the $(1, 1)$-length. We show that the $(1, 1)$-length equals the level number. We then find braid descriptions for $(1,1)$-posi…
A knot K in 1-bridge position with respect to a genus-g Heegaard surface in a 3-manifold can be moved by isotopy through knots in 1-bridge position until it lies in a union of n parallel genus-g surfaces tubed together by n-1 straight tubes, with K intersecting each tube in two arcs connecting the ends. We prove that the minimum n for which this is possible is equal to a Hempel-type distance invariant defined using an arc complex of the two holed genus-g surface
A knot in the 3-sphere in genus-1 1-bridge position (called a (1,1)-position) can be described by an element of the braid group of two points in the torus. Our main results tell how to translate between a braid group element and the sequence of slope invariants of the upper and lower tunnels of the (1,1)-position. After using them to verify previous calculations of the slope invariants for all tunnels of 2-bridge knots and (1,1)-tunnels of torus knots, we obtain characterizations of the slope sequences of tunnels of 2-bridge knots, and of a class of tunnels we call toroidal. The main results l…
We show there exists a linear function w: N->N with the following property. Let K be a hyperbolic knot in a hyperbolic 3-manifold M admitting a non-longitudinal S^3 surgery. If K is put into thin position with respect to a strongly irreducible, genus g Heegaard splitting of M then K intersects a thick level at most 2w(g) times. Typically, this shows that the bridge number of K with respect to this Heegaard splitting is at most w(g), and the tunnel number of K is at most w(g) + g-1.
In this paper, we define the rectangle condition on the bridge sphere for a $n$-bridge decomposition of a knot whose definition is analogous to the definition of the rectangle condition for Heegaard splittings of $3$-manifolds. We show that the satisfaction of the rectangle condition for a $n$-bridge decomposition can guarantee that the Hempel distance for the $n$-bridge decomposition is greater than or equal to $2$. In particular, we give an interesting family of alternating 3-bridge knots by using the rectangle condition and a modified train track argument.
We show that the bridge number of a $t$ bridge knot in $S^3$ with respect to an unknotted genus $t$ surface is bounded below by a function of the distance of the Heegaard splitting induced by the $t$ bridges. It follows that for any natural number $n$, there is a tunnel number one knot in $S^3$ that is not $(1,n)$.
We prove that every smoothly embedded surface in a 4--manifold can be isotoped to be in bridge position with respect to a given trisection of the ambient 4--manifold; that is, after isotopy, the surface meets components of the trisection in trivial disks or arcs. Such a decomposition, which we call a \emph{generalized bridge trisection}, extends the authors' definition of bridge trisections for surfaces in $S^4$. Using this new construction, we give diagrammatic representations called \emph{shadow diagrams} for knotted surfaces in 4--manifolds. We also provide a low-complexity classification f…
We extend the notion of thin multiple Heegaard splittings of a link in a 3-manifold to take into consideration not only compressing disks but also cut-disks for the Heegaard surfaces. We prove that if H is a c-strongly compressible bridge surface for a link K contained in a closed orientable irreducible 3-manifold M then one of the following is satisfied: H is stabilized, H is meridionally stabilized, H is perturbed, a component of K is removable, M contains an essential meridional surface.
We describe the genus two knots which admit a genus one, one bridge position. These are divided into several families, one consists of vertical bandings of two genus one $(1,1)$-knots, other consists of vertical bandings of two cross cap number two 2-bridge knots, and the last one consists of genus two tunnel number one satellite knots.
In this paper, we study on knots and closed incompressible surfaces in the 3-sphere via Morse functions. We show that both of knots and closed incompressible surfaces can be isotoped into a "related Morse position" simultaneously. As an application, we have following results. *Smallness of Montesinos tangles with length two and Kinoshita's theta curve *Classification of closed incompressible and meridionally incompressible surfaces in 2-bridge theta-curve and handcuff graph complements and the complements of links which admit Hopf tangle decompositions.
If a graph is in bridge position in a 3-manifold so that the graph complement is irreducible and boundary irreducible, we generalize a result of Bachman and Schleimer to prove that the complexity of a surface properly embedded in the complement of the graph bounds the graph distance of the bridge surface. We use this result to construct, for any natural number $n$, a hyperbolic manifold containing a surface of topological index $n$.
