26 pages. In this version, we have included a new proof of part of the main theorem. The new proof is somewhat simpler and stays entirely in the world of group homology and homological algebra rather than using Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. Other minor corrections. This is the final version to appear in Geometry & Topology
We give new information about the relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its derived series. This yields information about how the low-dimensional homology of a topological space constrains its fundamental group. Applications are given to detecting when a set of elements of a group generates a subgroup ``large enough'' to map onto a non-abelian free solvable group, and to concordance and grope cobordism of links. We also greatly generalize several key homological results employed in recent work of Cochran-Orr-Teichner, in the context of classical knot concordance.
In 1963 J. Stallings established a strong relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its lower central series quotients. In 1975 W. Dwyer extended Stallings' theorem by weakening the hypothesis on the second homology groups. The naive analogues of these theorems for the derived series are false. In 2003 the second author introduced a new characteristic series, associated to the derived series, called the torsion-free derived series. The authors previously established a precise analogue, for the torsion-free derived series, of Stallings' theorem. Here our main result is the analogue of Dwyer's theorem for the torsion-free derived series. We also prove a version of Dwyer's theorem for the rational lower central series. We apply these to give new results on the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration of the classical link concordance group.
Topological 4-dimensional surgery is conjectured to fail, in general, for free fundamental groups. M. Freedman and P. Teichner have shown that surgery problems with an arbitrary fundamental group have a solution, provided they satisfy a certain condition on Dwyer's filtration on second homology. We give a new geometric proof of this result, and analyze its relation to the canonical surgery problems.
``What aspects of a group are unchanged, or stable, under homology equivalences''? The model theorem in this regard is the 1963 result of J. Stallings that the lower central series is preserved under any integral homological equivalence of groups. Various other theorems of this nature have since appeared. Stallings himself proved similar theorems for homology with rational or mod p coefficients. These involved different series of groups- variations of the lower central series. W. Dwyer generalized Stallings' integral results to larger classes of maps, work that was completed in the other cases…
In 1964, John Stallings established an important relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its lower central series. We establish a similar relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its derived series. We also define a torsion-free-solvable completion of a group that is analogous to the Malcev completion, with the role of the lower central series replaced by the derived series. We prove that the torsion-free-solvable completion is invariant under rational homology equivalence.
We prove that groups that are mod-p-homology equivalent are isomorphic modulo any term of their derived p-series, in precise analogy to Stallings' 1963 result for the lower-central p-series. Similarly spaces that are mod-p-homology equivalent have fundamental groups that are isomorphic modulo any term of their p-derived series. Various authors have related the ranks of the successive quotients of the lower central p-series and of the derived p-series of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold M to the volume of M, to whether certain subgroups of the fundamental group of M are free, whether finit…
We present a method for deciding when a regular abelian cover of a finite CW-complex has finite Betti numbers. To start with, we describe a natural parameter space for all regular covers of a finite CW-complex X, with group of deck transformations a fixed abelian group A, which in the case of free abelian covers of rank r coincides with the Grassmanian of r-planes in H^1(X,\Q). Inside this parameter space, there is a subset Ω_A^i(X) consisting of all the covers with finite Betti numbers up to degree i. Building on work of Dwyer and Fried, we show how to compute these sets in terms of the jump …
The homology cobordism group of homology cylinders is a generalization of both the mapping class group of surfaces and the string link concordance group. We consider extensions of Johnson homomorphisms of a mapping class group, Milnor invariants and Orr invariants of links to homology cylinders, all of which are related to free nilpotent groups. We establish a combined filtration via kernels of extended Johnson homomorphisms and extended Milnor invariants. We determine its image under the three invariants, and investigate relations among the invariants, and relations of the filtration to autom…
A homology cylinder over a compact manifold is a homology cobordism between two copies of the manifold together with a boundary parametrization. We study abelian quotients of the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders. For homology cylinders over general surfaces, it was shown by Cha, Friedl and Kim that their homology cobordism groups have infinitely generated abelian quotient groups by using Reidemeister torsion invariants. In this paper, we first investigate their abelian quotients again by using another invariant called the Magnus representation. After that, we apply the machinery …
We construct a series of homomorphisms from the $Y$-filtration on the monoid of homology cylinders to torsion modules via the mod $\mathbb{Z}$ reduction of the LMO functor. The restriction of our homomorphism to the lower central series of the Torelli group does not factor through Morita's refinement of the Johnson homomorphism. We use it to show that the abelianization of the Johnson kernel of a closed surface has torsion elements. We also determine the third graded quotient $Y_3\mathcal{IC}_{g,1}/Y_4$ of the $Y$-filtration.
We give a homological interpretation of the coefficients of the Hilbert series for an algebra associated with a directed graph and its dual algebra. This allows us to obtain necessary conditions for Koszulity of such algebras in terms of homological properties of the graphs. We use our results to construct algebras with a prescribed Hilbert series.
Aimed at geometric applications, we prove the homology cobordism invariance of the $L^2$-betti numbers and $L^2$-signature defects associated to the class of amenable groups lying in Strebel's class $D(R)$, which includes some interesting infinite/finitenon-torsion-free groups. The proofs include the only prior known condition, that $Γ$ is a poly-torsion-free abelian group (or potentially a finite $p$-group.) We define a new commutator-type series which refines Harvey's torsion-free derived series of groups, using the localizations of groups and rings of Bousfield, Vogel, and Cohn. The series,…
For any group G, we define a new characteristic series related to the derived series, that we call the torsion-free derived series of G. Using this series and the Cheeger-Gromov rho-invariant, we obtain new real-valued homology cobordism invariants rho_n for closed (4k-1)-dimensional manifolds. For 3-dimensional manifolds, we show that {rho_n} is a linearly independent set and for each n, the image of rho_n is an infinitely generated and dense subset of R. In their seminal work on knot concordance, T. Cochran, K. Orr, and P. Teichner define a filtration F_(n)^m of the m-component (string) link…
Let M be a closed, connected and oriented 3-manifold. This article is the first of a five part series that constructs an isomorphism between the Heegaard Floer homology groups of M and the corresponding Seiberg-Witten Floer homology groups of M.
We construct power series invariants of rational homology 3-spheres from quantum PSU(n)-invariants. The power series can be regarded as perturbative invariants corresponding to the contribution of the trivial connection in the hypothetical Witten's integral. This generalizes a result of Ohtsuki (the $n=2$ case) which led him to the definition of finite type invariants of 3-manifolds. The proof utilizes some symmetry properties of quantum invariants (of links) derived from the theory of affine Lie algebras and the theory of the Kontsevich integral.
Our aim is to prove that two formal power series of importance to quantum topology are Gevrey. These series are the Kashaev invariant of a knot (reformulated by Huynh and the second author) and the Gromov norm of the LMO of an integral homology 3-sphere. It follows that the power series associated to a simple Lie algebra and a homology sphere is Gevrey. Contrary to the case of analysis, our formal power series are not solutions to differential equations with polynomial coefficients. The first author has conjectured (and in some cases proved, in joint work with Costin) that our formal power ser…
We show that diagram groups can be viewed as fundamental groups of spaces of positive paths on directed 2-complexes (these spaces of paths turn out to be classifying spaces). Thus diagram groups are analogs of second homotopy groups, although diagram groups are as a rule non-Abelian. Part of the paper is a review of the previous results from this point of view. In particular, we show that the so called rigidity of the R.Thompson's group $F$ and some other groups is similar to the flat torus theorem. We find several finitely presented diagram groups (even of type F_\infty) each of which contain…
Magnitude homology is a bigraded homology theory for finite graphs defined by Hepworth and Willerton, categorifying the power series invariant known as magnitude which was introduced by Leinster. We analyze the structure and implications of torsion in magnitude homology. We show that any finitely generated abelian group may appear as a subgroup of the magnitude homology of a graph, and, in particular, that torsion of a given prime order can appear in the magnitude homology of a graph and that there are infinitely many such graphs. Finally, we provide complete computations of magnitude homology…
According to seminal work of Kontsevich, the unstable homology of the mapping class group of a surface can be computed via the homology of a certain lie algebra. In a recent paper, S. Morita analyzed the abelianization of this lie algebra, thereby constructing a series of candidates for unstable classes in the homology of the mapping class group. In the current paper, we show that these cycles are all nontrivial, representing degree 4k+1 homology classes in the homology of the mapping class group of a genus one surface with 4k+1 punctures.
In his study of the group of homology cylinders, J. Levine made the conjecture that a certain homomorphism eta': T -> D' is an isomorphism. Here T is an abelian group on labeled oriented trees, and D' is the kernel of a bracketing map on a quasi-Lie algebra. Both T and D' have strong connections to a variety of topological settings, including the mapping class group, homology cylinders, finite type invariants, Whitney tower intersection theory, and the homology of the group of automorphisms of the free group. In this paper, we confirm Levine's conjecture. This is a central step in classifying …
This paper continues our exploration of homology cobordism of 3-manifolds using our recent results on Cheeger-Gromov rho-invariants associated to amenable representations. We introduce a new type of torsion in 3-manifold groups we call hidden torsion, and an algebraic approximation we call local hidden torsion. We construct infinitely many hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have local hidden torsion in the transfinite lower central subgroup. By realizing Cheeger-Gromov invariants over amenable groups, we show that our hyperbolic 3-manifolds are not pairwise homology cobordant, yet remain indistingui…
We introduce an invariant of tangles in Khovanov homology by considering a natural inverse system of Khovanov homology groups. As application, we derive an invariant of strongly invertible knots; this invariant takes the form of a graded vector space that vanishes if and only if the strongly invertible knot is trivial. While closely tied to Khovanov homology -- and hence the Jones polynomial -- we observe that this new invariant detects non-amphicheirality in subtle cases where Khovanov homology fails to do so. In fact, we exhibit examples of knots that are not distinguished by Khovanov homolo…
These are lecture notes from a series of lectures at the SMF summer school on "Geometric and Quantum Topology in Dimension 3", June 2014. The focus is on Heegaard Floer homology from the perspective of sutured Floer homology.
This is the third in our series of papers relating gauge theoretic invariants of certain 4-manifolds with invariants of 3-manifolds derived from Rohlin's theorem. Such relations are well-known in dimension three, starting with Casson's integral lift of the Rohlin invariant of a homology sphere. We consider two invariants of a spin 4-manifold that has the integral homology of a 4-torus. The first is a degree zero Donaldson invariant, counting flat connections on a certain SO(3)-bundle. The second, which depends on the choice of a 1-dimensional cohomology class, is a combination of Rohlin invari…
The virtual Betti number conjecture states that any hyperbolic three-manifold has a finite cover with positive first Betti number. We show that this would follow if it were known that the derived series of the fundamental group $G$ of a hyperbolic three-manifold satisfies a certain stability property. The stability property is the statement that if all the quotients $G^i/G^{i+1}$ of the derived series $G^i$ of $G$ are finite, then the derived series stabilises. The proof involves basic facts regarding finite group actions on homology spheres.
This is the third paper of this series. In \cite{Wang20}, we defined the monopole Floer homology for any pair $(Y,ω)$, where $Y$ is a compact oriented 3-manifold with toroidal boundary and $ω$ is a suitable closed 2-form viewed as a decoration. In this paper, we establish a gluing theorem for this Floer homology when two such 3-manifolds are glued suitably along their common boundary, assuming that $\partial Y$ is disconnected, and $ω$ is small and yet non-vanishing on $\partial Y$. As applications, we construct a monopole Floer 2-functor and the generalized cobordism maps. Using results of Kr…
Let R be a compact oriented surface of genus g with one boundary component. Homology cylinders over R form a monoid IC into which the Torelli group I of R embeds by the mapping cylinder construction. Two homology cylinders M and M' are said to be Y_k-equivalent if M' is obtained from M by "twisting" an arbitrary surface S in M with a homeomorphim belonging to the k-th term of the lower central series of the Torelli group of S. The J_k-equivalence relation on IC is defined in a similar way using the k-th term of the Johnson filtration. In this paper, we characterize the Y_3-equivalence with thr…
