Topological 4-dimensional surgery is conjectured to fail, in general, for free fundamental groups. M. Freedman and P. Teichner have shown that surgery problems with an arbitrary fundamental group have a solution, provided they satisfy a certain condition on Dwyer's filtration on second homology. We give a new geometric proof of this result, and analyze its relation to the canonical surgery problems.

Homology and Derived Series of Groups II: Dwyer's Theorem

We give new information about the relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its derived series. This yields information about how the low-dimensional homology of a topological space constrains its fundamental group. Applications are given to detecting when a set of elements of a group generates a subgroup ``large enough'' to map onto a non-abelian free solvable group, and to concordance and grope cobordism of links. Clover calculus for homology 3-spheres via basic algebraic topology

We present an alternative definition for the Goussarov--Habiro filtration of the Z-module freely generated by oriented integral homology 3-spheres, by means of Lagrangian-preserving homology handlebody replacements (LP-surgeries). Garoufalidis, Goussarov and Polyak proved that the graded space (G_n)_n associated to this filtration is generated by Jacobi diagrams. Linear-central filtrations and the image of the Burau representation

The Burau representation is a fundamental bridge between the braid group and diverse other topics in mathematics. A 1974 question of Birman asks for a description of the image; in this paper we give a "strong approximation" to the answer. Since a 1984 paper of Squier it has been known that the Burau representation preserves a certain Hermitian form. Topology of the Stokes phenomenon

Several intrinsic topological ways to encode connections on vector bundles on smooth complex algebraic curves will be described. In particular the notion of {\em Stokes decompositions} will be formalised, as a convenient intermediate category between the Stokes filtrations and the Stokes local systems/wild monodromy representations. The main result establishes a new simple characterisation of the Stokes decompositions.

Higher Order Intersections in Low-Dimensional Topology

We show how to measure the failure of the Whitney trick in dimension 4 by constructing higher- order intersection invariants of Whitney towers built from iterated Whitney disks on immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds. For Whitney towers on immersed disks in the 4-ball, we identify some of these new invariants with previously known link invariants like Milnor, Sato-Levine and Arf invariants. Topology of two-connected graphs and homology of spaces of knots

We propose a new method of computing cohomology groups of spaces of knots in $\R^n$, $n \ge 3$, based on the topology of configuration spaces and two-connected graphs, and calculate all such classes of order $\le 3.$ As a byproduct we define the higher indices, which invariants of knots in $\R^3$ define at arbitrary singular knots. More generally, for any finite-order cohomology class of the space of knots we define its principal symbol, which lies in a cohomology group of a certain finite-dimensional configuration space and characterizes our class modulo the classes of smaller filtration.
