This is an expository account of completion and local cohomology in brave new commutative algebra, especially as it applies to completion theorems and their duals in equivariant topology. The first part is fairly direct, but the second considers Morita theory and Gorenstein ring spectra. This draws on work of the author with Benson, Dwyer, Iyengar and May, amongst others.

Modern categories of spectra such as that of Elmendorf et al equipped with strictly symmetric monoidal smash products allows the introduction of symmetric monoids providing a new way to study highly coherent commutative ring spectra. These notes illustrates the power of formulating ideas of commutative algebra in a homotopy invariant form. They can then be applied to derived categories of rings or ring spectra. These ideas are powerful in classical algebra, in representation theory of groups, in classical algebraic topology and elsewhere. The notes grew out of a series of lectures given during the `Interactions between Representation Theory, Algebraic Topology and Commutative Algebra' (IRTATCA) at the CRM (Barcelona) in Spring 2015.
We construct some spectral sequences as tools for computing commutative cohomology of commutative Lie algebras in characteristic 2. In a first part, we focus on a Hochschild-Serre-type spectral sequence, while in a second part we obtain comparison spectral sequences which mediate between Chevalley-Eilenberg-, commutative-and Leibniz cohomology. Equipping a non-equivariant topological E_\infty operad with the trivial G-action gives an operad in G-spaces. The algebra structure encoded by this operad in G-spectra is characterised homotopically by having no non-trivial multiplicative norms. Algebras over this operad are called naive-commutative ring G-spectra. In this paper we let G be a finite group and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational G-spectra model the rational naive-commutative ring G-spectra.
We show that the homotopy category of commutative algebra spectra over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum of the integers is equivalent to the homotopy category of E-infinity-monoids in unbounded chain complexes. We do this by establishing a chain of Quillen equivalences between the corresponding model categories. We also provide a Quillen equivalence to commutative monoids in the category of functors from the category of finite sets and injections to unbounded chain complexes.

Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that the forgetful functor from the homotopy category of commutative dg algebras to the homotopy category of dg associative algebras is faithful. In fact, the induced map of derived mapping spaces gives an injection on all homotopy groups at any basepoint. Over a field of characteristic zero we prove two formality conditions. We prove that a dg Lie algebra is formal if and only if its universal enveloping algebra is formal. We also prove that a commutative dg algebra is formal as a dg associative algebra if and only if it is formal as a commutative dg algebra. We present some consequences of these theorems in rational homotopy theory.
We compute the homology of the complex of formal operations on the Hochschild complex of differential graded commutative algebras as defined by Wahl and prove that these can be built as infinite sums of operations obtained from Loday's shuffle operations, Connes' boundary operator and the shuffle product.
