An abstract framework for studying the asymptotic behavior of a dissipative evolutionary system $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to weak and strong topologies was introduced in [8] primarily to study the long-time behavior of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) for which the existence of a semigroup of solution operators is not known. Each evolutionary system possesses a global attractor in the weak topology, but does not necessarily in the strong topology. In this paper we study the structure of a global attractor for an abstract evolutionary system, focusing on omega-limits and attracting, invariant, and quasi-invariant sets. We obtain weak and strong uniform tracking properties of omega-limits and global attractors. In addition, we discuss a trajectory attractor for an evolutionary system and derive a condition under which the convergence to the trajectory attractor is strong.
In [Adv. Math., 267(2014), 277-306], Cheskidov and Lu develop a new framework of the evolutionary system that deals directly with the notion of a uniform global attractor due to Haraux, and by which a trajectory attractor is able to be defined for the original system under consideration. The notion of a trajectory attractor was previously established for a system without uniqueness by considering a family of auxiliary systems including the original one. In this paper, we further prove the existence of a notion of a strongly compact strong trajectory attractor if the system is asymptotically co…
If the semigroup is slowly non-dissipative, i.e., its solutions can diverge to infinity as time tends to infinity, one still can study its dynamics via the approach by the unbounded attractors - the counterpart of the classical notion of global attractors. We continue the development of this theory started by Chepyzhov and Goritskii [CG92]. We provide the abstract results on the unbouded attractor existence, and we study the properties of these attractors, as well as of unbounded $ω$-limit sets in slowly non-dissipative setting. We also develop the pullback non-autonomous counterpart of the un…
In this paper the long time behaviour of the solutions of 3-D strongly damped wave equation is studied. It is shown that the semigroup generated by this equation possesses a global attractor in H_{0}^{1}(Ω)\times L_{2}(Ω) and then it is proved that this global attractor is a bounded subset of H^{2}(Ω)\times H^{2}(Ω) and also a global attractor in H^{2}(Ω)\cap H_{0}^{1}(Ω)\times H_{0}^{1}(Ω).
In the article, we aim to investigate the well-posedness of solution and the regularity of the global attractor for the couple stress fluid in saturated porous media with the local thermal non-equilibrium effect. To be more specific, we firstly show the existence and uniqueness of global weak solution to the model by making use of the standard Galerkin method. Second, relying on verifying the uniformly compact condition required, we prove the existence of the global attractor of the model in the space where the weak solution resides. Finally, we improve the regularity of global attractor by un…
This paper considers the dynamical behavior of solutions of constitutive systems for 1D compressible viscous and heat-conducting micropolar fluids. With proper constraints on initial data, we prove the existence of global attractors in generalized Sobolev spaces $H^{(1)}_δ$ and $H^{(2)}_δ$.
In view of the possibility that the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) might not always have regular solutions, we introduce an abstract framework for studying the asymptotic behavior of multi-valued dissipative evolutionary systems with respect to two topologies--weak and strong. Each such system possesses a global attractor in the weak topology, but not necessarily in the strong. In case the latter exists and is weakly closed, it coincides with the weak global attractor. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of the strong global attractor, which is verified for the 3D NSE when all s…
In this paper we study the structure of the global attractor for a reaction- di§usion equation in which uniqueness of the Cauchy problem is not guarantied. We prove that the global attractor can be characterized using either the unstable manifold of the set of stationary points or the stable one but considering in this last case only solutions in the set of bounded complete trajectories.
In this work the existence of a global attractor for the solution semiflow of the coupled two-cell Brusselator model equations is proved. A grouping estimation method and a new decomposition approach are introduced to deal with the challenge in proving the absorbing property and the asymptotic compactness of this type of four-variable reaction-diffusion systems with cubic autocatalytic nonlinearity and with linear coupling. It is also proved that the Hausdorff dimension and the fractal dimension of the global attractor are finite.
Evolutionary games on graphs play an important role in the study of evolution of cooperation in applied biology. Using rigorous mathematical concepts from a dynamical systems and graph theoretical point of view, we formalize the notions of attractor, update rules and update orders. We prove results on attractors for different utility functions and update orders. For complete graphs we characterize attractors for synchronous and sequential update rules. In other cases (for $k$-regular graphs or for different update orders) we provide sufficient conditions for attractivity of full cooperation an…
We investigate the long term behavior in terms of global attractors, as time goes to infinity, of solutions to a continuum model for biological aggregations in which individuals experience long-range social attraction and short range dispersal. We consider the aggregation equation with both degenerate and non-degenerate diffusion in a bounded domain subject to various boundary conditions. In the degenerate case, we prove the existence of the global attractor and derive some optimal regularity results. Furthermore, in the non-degenerate case we give a complete structural characterization of the…
The Penrose-Fife system for phase transitions is addressed. Dirichlet boundary conditions for the temperature are assumed. Existence of global and exponential attractors is proved. Differently from preceding contributions, here the energy balance equation is both singular at 0 and degenerate at infinity. For this reason, the dissipativity of the associated dynamical process is not trivial and has to be proved rather carefully.
We establish a smoothing result for the generalized KdV (gKdV) on the torus with polynomial non-linearity, damping, and forcing that matches the smoothing level for the gKdV at $H^1$. As a consequence, we establish the existence of a global attractor for this equation as well as its compactness in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$, $s\in (1,2).$
Using shape theory and the concept of cellularity, we show that if $A$ is the global attractor associated with a dissipative partial differential equation in a real Hilbert space $H$ and the set $A-A$ has finite Assouad dimension $d$, then there is an ordinary differential equation in ${\mathbb R}^{m+1}$, with $m >d$, that has unique solutions and reproduces the dynamics on $A$. Moreover, the dynamical system generated by this new ordinary differential equation has a global attractor $X$ arbitrarily close to $LA$, where $L$ is a homeomorphism from $A$ into ${\mathbb R}^{m+1}$.
We provide bounds on the upper box-counting dimension of negatively invariant subsets of Banach spaces, a problem that is easily reduced to covering the image of the unit ball under a linear map by a collection of balls of smaller radius. As an application of the abstract theory we show that the global attractors of a very broad class of parabolic partial differential equations (semilinear equations in Banach spaces) are finite-dimensional.
A method is proposed to deal with some multivalued semiflows with weak continuity properties. An application to the reaction-diffusion problems with nonmonotone multivalued semilinear boundary condition and nonmonotone multivalued semilinear source term is presented.
Let $Λ$ be a complete metric space, and let $\{S_λ(\cdot):\ λ\inΛ\}$ be a parametrised family of semigroups with global attractors ${\mathscr A}_λ$. We assume that there exists a fixed bounded set $D$ such that ${\mathscr A}_λ\subset D$ for every $λ\inΛ$. By viewing the attractors as the limit as $t\to\infty$ of the sets $S_λ(t)D$, we give simple proofs of the equivalence of `equi-attraction' to continuity (when this convergence is uniform in $λ$) and show that the attractors ${\mathscr A}_λ$ are continuous in $λ$ at a residual set of parameters in the sense of Baire Category (when the converg…
We analyze a phase-field system where the energy balance equation is linearly coupled with a nonlinear and nonlocal ODE for the order parameter $χ$. The latter equation is characterized by a space convolution term which models particle interaction and a singular configuration potential that forces $χ$ to take values in $(-1,1)$. We prove that the corresponding dynamical system has a bounded absorbing set in a suitable phase space. Then we establish the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor.
In this paper we consider the long time behavior of the weakly damped, forced Korteweg-de Vries equation in the Sololev spaces of the negative indices in the periodic case. We prove that the solutions are uniformly bounded in $\dot{H}^s(\T)$ for $s>-\dfrac{1}{2}$. Moreover, we show that the solution-map possesses a global attractor in $\dot{H}^s(\T)$ for $s>-\dfrac{1}{2}$, which is a compact set in $H^{s+3}(\T)$.
This work is focused on the dissipative system describing the dynamics of an extensible thermoelastic beam, where the dissipation is entirely contributed by the second equation ruling the evolution of the temperature. Under natural boundary conditions, we prove the existence of bounded absorbing sets. When both the external body force and the heat source are time-independent, the related semigroup of solutions is shown to possess the global attractor of optimal regularity for all values of the external axial load. The same result holds true when the rotational inertia is taken into considerati…
The article is devoted to the study of non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equations. First, the authors have proved that such systems admit compact global attractors. This problem is formulated and solved in the terms of general non-autonomous dynamical systems. Second, they have obtained conditions of convergence of non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equations. Third, a criterion for the existence of almost periodic (quasi periodic, almost automorphic, recurrent, pseudo recurrent) solutions of non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equations is given. Finally, the authors have derived a global averaging principle f…
We consider a family of non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations with almost periodic, rapidly oscillating principal part and nonlinear interactions. As the frequency of the oscillations tends to infinity, we prove that the solutions of the non-autonomous equations converge to the solutions of the autonomous averaged equation. If the nonlinearity is dissipative, we prove existence of compact attractors and their upper-semicontinuity at infinity.
The existence of a global attractor for wave equations in unbounded domains is a challenging problem due to the non-compactness of the Sobolev embeddings. To overcome this difficulty, some authors have worked with weighted Sobolev spaces which restrict the choice of the initial data. Using the "tail estimation method" introduced by B. Wang for reaction diffusion equations, we establish in this paper the existence of a global attractor for two wave equations in the traditional Hilbert spaces $\displaystyle H^1(Ω)\times L^2(Ω)$ where $Ω$ is an unbounded domain of $\R^N$. The first equation, with…
This paper is concerned with the existence and regularity of global attractor $\mathcal A$ for a Kirchhoff wave equation with strong damping and memory in the weighted time-dependent spaces $\mathcal H$ and $\mathcal H^{1}$, respectively. In order to obtain the existence of $\mathcal A$, we mainly use the energy method in the priori estimations, and then verify the asymptotic compactness of the semigroup by the method of contraction function. Finally, by decomposing the weak solutions into two parts and some elaborate calculations, we prove the regularity of $\mathcal A$.
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of one coupled PDE-ODE system arising in mathematical biology as a model for the development of a forest ecosystem. In the case where the ODE-component of the system is monotone, we establish the existence of a smooth global attractor of finite Hausdorff and fractal dimension. The case of the non-monotone ODE-component is much more complicated. In particular, the set of equilibria becomes non-compact here and contains a huge number of essentially discontinuous solutions. Nevertheless, we prove the stabilization of any trajectory to a single equilib…
This paper proposes an abstract theory concerned with dynamical systems generated by doubly nonlinear evolution equations governed by subdifferential operators with non-monotone perturbations in a reflexive Banach space setting. In order to construct global attractors, an approach based on the notion of generalized semiflow is employed instead of the usual semi-group approach, since solutions of the Cauchy problem for the equation might not be unique. Moreover, the preceding abstract theory is applied to a generalized Allen-Cahn equation whose potential is divided into a convex part and a non-…
We address, in a three-dimensional spatial setting, both the viscous and the standard Cahn-Hilliard equation with a nonconstant mobility coefficient. As it was shown in J.W. Barrett and J.W. Blowey, Math. Comp., 68 (1999), 487-517, one cannot expect uniqueness of the solution to the related initial and boundary value problems. Nevertheless, referring to J. Ball's theory of generalized semiflows, we are able to prove existence of compact quasi-invariant global attractors for the associated dynamical processes settled in the natural "finite energy" space. A key point in the proof is a careful us…
In this paper the notion of global attractor is extended from the setting of semigroup actions on metric spaces to the setting of semigroup actions on uniformizable spaces. General conditions for the existence of global attractor are discussed and its relationship with the global uniform attractor is presented.
We discuss various issues related to the finite-dimensionality of the asymptotic dynamics of solutions of parabolic equations. In particular, we study the regularity of the vector field on the global attractor associated with these equations. We show that certain dissipative partial differential equations possess a linear term that is log-Lipschitz continuous on the attractor. We then prove that this property implies that the associated global attractor $\mathcal A$ lies within a small neighbourhood of a smooth manifold, given as a Lipschitz graph over a finite number of Fourier modes. Consequ…
In this paper we study continuous parametrized families of dissipative flows, which are those flows having a global attractor. The main motivation for this study comes from the observation that, in general, global attractors are not robust, in the sense that small perturbations of the flow can destroy their globality. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a global attractor to be continued to a global attractor. We also study, using shape theoretical methods and the Conley index, the bifurcation global to non-global.
We study the long time behavior of solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equation arising in the description of trapped rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The equation can be seen as a hybrid between the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions in the physical energy space and establish the existence of a global attractor within the associated dynamics. We also obtain basic structural properties of the attractor and an estimate on its Hausdorff and fractal dimensions.

This note is focused on a novel technique in order to establish the boundedness in more regular spaces for global attractors of dissipative dynamical systems, without appealing to uniform-in-time estimates. As an application of the abstract result, the semigroup generated by the strongly damped wave equation $$u_{tt}-Δu_t-Δu+ϕ(u)=f$$ with critical nonlinearity is considered, whose attractor is shown to possess the optimal regularity.
We discuss the existence of the global attractor for a family of processes $U_σ(t,τ)$ acting on a metric space $X$ and depending on a symbol $σ$ belonging to some other metric space $Σ$. Such an attractor is uniform with respect to $σ\inΣ$, as well as with respect to the choice of the initial time $τ\in\R$. The existence of the attractor is established for totally dissipative processes without any continuity assumption. When the process satisfies some additional (but rather mild) continuity-like hypotheses, a characterization of the attractor is given.
In this paper, we mainly consider the long-time behavior of solutions for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system with dynamic boundary conditions and two polynomial growth nonlinearities of arbitrary order. We prove the existence of a finite dimensional global attractor for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system with dynamic boundary conditions by using the $\ell$-trajectories method.
In this paper we consider sufficient conditions for the existence of uniform compact global attractor for non-autonomous dynamical systems in special classes of infinite-dimensional phase spaces. The obtained generalizations allow us to avoid the restrictive compactness assumptions on the space of shifts of non-autonomous terms in particular evolution problems. The results are applied to several evolution inclusions.
In this work we consider the nonlocal evolution equation $$ \frac{\partial u(w,t)}{\partial t}=-u(w,t)+ \int_{S^{1}}J(wz^{-1})f(u(z,t))dz+ h, \,\,\, h > 0 $$ which arises in models of neuronal activity, in $L^{2}(S^{1})$, where $S^{1}$ denotes the unit sphere. We obtain stronger results on existence of global attractors and Lypaunov functional than the already existing in the literature. Furthermore, we prove the result, not yet known in the literature, of lower semicontinuity of global attractors with respect to connectivity function $J$.
In this paper we show the lower semicontinuity of the global attractors of autonomous thermoelastic plate systems with Neumann boundary conditions when some reaction terms are concentrated in a neighborhood of the boundary and this neighborhood shrinks to boundary as a parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero.
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
The analysis of the long-term behavior of the mathematical model of a neural network constitutes a suitable framework to develop new tools for the dynamical description of nonautonomous state-dependent delay equations (SDDEs). The concept of global attractor is given, and some results which establish properties ensuring its existence and providing a description of its shape, are proved. Conditions for the exponential stability of the global attractor are also studied. Some properties of comparison of solutions constitute a key in the proof of the main results, introducing methods of monotonici…
For autonomous Lotka-Volterra systems of differential equations modelling the dynamics of n competing species, new criteria are established for the existence of a single point global attractor. Under the conditions of these criteria, some of the species will survive and stabilise at a steady state whereas the others, if any, will die out.
There are many tools for studying local dynamics. An important problem is how this information can be used to obtain global information. We present examples for which local stability does not carry on globally. To this purpose we construct, for any natural n>1, planar maps whose symmetry group is Zn having a local attractor that is not a global attractor. The construction starts from an example with symmetry group Z4. We show that although this example has codimension 3 as a Z4-symmetric map-germ, its relevant dynamic properties are shared by two 1-parameter families in its universal unfolding…
For Milnor, statistical, and minimal attractors, we construct examples of smooth flows $φ$ on $S^2$ for which the attractor of the Cartesian square of $φ$ is smaller than the Cartesian square of the attractor of $φ$. In the example for the minimal attractors, the flow $φ$ also has a global physical measure such that its square does not coincide with the global physical measure of the square of $φ$.
