Our aim is to bring the theory of analogous polytopes to bear on the study of quasitoric manifolds, in the context of stably complex manifolds with compatible torus action. By way of application, we give an explicit construction of a quasitoric representative for every complex cobordism class as the quotient of a free torus action on a real quadratic complete intersection. We suggest a systematic description for omnioriented quasitoric manifolds in terms of combinatorial data, and explain the relationship with non-singular projective toric varieties (otherwise known as toric manifolds). By expressing the first and third authors' approach to the representability of cobordism classes in these terms, we simplify and correct two of their original proofs concerning quotient polytopes; the first relates to framed embeddings in the positive cone, and the second involves modifying the operation of connected sum to take account of orientations. Analogous polytopes provide an informative setting for several of the details.
The present paper generalises the results of Ray and Buchstaber-Ray, Buchstaber-Panov-Ray in unitary cobordism theory. I prove that any class $x\in Ω^{*}_{U}$ of the unitary cobordism ring contains a quasitoric totally normally and tangentially split manifold.
We show the $\TT^2$-cobordism group of the category of 4-dimensional quasitoric manifolds is generated by the $\TT^2$-cobordism classes of $\CP^2$. We construct nice oriented $\TT^2$ manifolds with boundary where the boundary is the Hirzebruch surfaces. The main tool is the theory of quasitoric manifolds.
We construct orbifolds with quasitoric boundary and show that they have stable almost complex structure. We show that a quasitoric orbifold is complex cobordant to finite disjoint copies of complex orbifold projective spaces. Finally some computations in the complex cobordism ring for manifolds are given.
Baker and Richter construct a remarkable $A_\infty$ ring-spectrum $MΞ$ whose elements possess characteristic numbers associated to quasisymmetric functions; its relations, on one hand to the theory of noncommutative formal groups, and on the other to the theory of omnioriented (quasi)toric manifolds [in the sense of Buchstaber, Panov, and Ray], seem worth investigating.
For a simple $n$-polytope $P$, a quasitoric manifold over $P$ is a $2n$-dimensional smooth manifold with a locally standard action of the $n$-dimensional torus for which the orbit space is identified with $P$. This paper shows the topological classification of quasitoric manifolds over the dual cyclic polytope $C^n(m)^*$, when $n>3$ or $m-n=3$. Besides, we classify small covers, the "real version" of quasitoric manifolds, over all dual cyclic polytopes.
This article mainly aims to give combinatorial characterizations and topological descriptions of quasitoric manifolds with string property. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple polytope in dimension 2 and 3 to be realizable as the orbit polytope of a string quasitoric manifold. In particular, a complete description of string quasitoric manifolds over prisms is obtained. On the other hand, we characterize string quasitoric manifolds over $n$-dimensional simple polytopes with no more than $2n+2$ facets. Further results are available when the orbit polytope is the connecte…
We show that all generalized (real) Bott manifolds which are (small covers) quasitoric manifolds over a product of simplices $Δ^{n_1}\times\cdots\timesΔ^{n_r}\timesΔ^{1}$ are always boundaries of some manifolds. But these manifolds with the natural $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^n$ action do not necessarily bound equvariantly. In addition, we can construct some examples of null-cobordant but not orientedly null-cobordant manifolds among quasitoric manifolds.
In this paper we develop a theory of volume polynomials of generalized virtual polytopes based on the study of topology of affine subspace arrangements in a real Euclidean space. We apply this theory to obtain a topological version of the BKK Theorem, the Stanley-Reisner and Pukhlikov-Khovanskii type descriptions for cohomology rings of generalized quasitoric manifolds.
We construct small covers and quasitoric manifolds over $n$-dimensional simple polytopes which allow proper colorings of facets with $n$ colors. We calculate Stiefel-Whitney classes of these manifolds as obstructions to immersions and embeddings into Euclidean spaces. The largest dimension required for embedding is achieved in the case $n$ is a power of two.
A quasitoric manifold is a smooth 2n-manifold M^{2n} with an action of the compact torus T^n such that the action is locally isomorphic to the standard action of T^n on C^n and the orbit space is diffeomorphic, as manifold with corners, to a simple polytope P^n. The name refers to the fact that topological and combinatorial properties of quasitoric manifolds are similar to that of non-singular algebraic toric varieties (or toric manifolds). Unlike toric varieties, quasitoric manifolds may fail to be complex; however, they always admit a stably (or weakly almost) complex structure, and their co…
We construct toric manifolds of complex dimension $\geq 4$, whose orbit spaces by the action of the compact torus are not homeomorphic to simple polytopes (as manifolds with corners). These provide the first known examples of toric manifolds which are not quasitoric manifolds.
We give a new construction of oriented manifolds having the boundary $\CC P^{2k+1}$ for each $k \geq 0$. The main tool is the theory of quasitoric manifolds.
A quasitoric manifold is a $2n$-dimensional compact smooth manifold with a locally standard action of an $n$-dimensional torus whose orbit space is a simple polytope. In this article, we classify quasitoric manifolds with the second Betti number $β_2=2$ topologically. Interestingly, they are distinguished by their cohomology rings up to homeomorphism.
We prove that any quasitoric manifold $M^{2n}$ admits a $T^n$-invariant almost complex structure if and only if $M$ admits a positive omniorientation. In particular, we show that all obstructions to existence of $T^n$-invariant almost complex structure on $M^{2n}$ arise from cohomology of underlying polytope - and hence are trivial.
Let $X(Q,Λ)$ be a quasitoric manifold associated to a simple convex polytope $Q$ and characteristic function $Λ$. Let $T\cong (\mathbb{S}^1)^n$ denote the compact $n$-torus acting on $X=X(Q,Λ)$. The main aim of this article is to give a presentation of the $T$-equivariant $K$-ring of $X$, as a Stanley-Reisner ring over $K^*(pt)$. We also derive the presentation for the ordinary $K$-ring of $X$.
A quasitoric manifold is a smooth manifold with a locally standard torus action for which the orbit space is identified with a simple polytope. For a class of topological spaces, the class is called strongly cohomologically rigid if any isomorphism of cohomology rings can be realized as a homeomorphism. This paper shows the strong cohomological rigidity of the class of quasitoric manifolds over $I^3$.

A general problem in complex cobordism theory is to find useful representatives for cobordism classes. One particularly convenient class of complex manifolds consists of smooth projective toric varieties. The bijective correspondence between these varieties and smooth polytopes allows us to examine which complex cobordism classes contain a smooth projective toric variety by studying the combinatorics of polytopes. These combinatorial properties determine obstructions to a complex cobordism class containing a smooth projective toric variety. However, the obstructions are only necessary conditio…
We present two examples in toric geometry concerning the relationship between toric and quasitoric manifolds, and provide the sufficient conditions on the base polytope and characteristic map so that the resulting quasitoric manifold is almost complex.
We investigate small covers and quasitoric over the duals of neighborly simplicial polytopes with small number of vertices in dimensions $4$, $5$, $6$ and $7$. In the most of the considered cases we obtain the complete classification of small covers. The lifting conjecture in all cases is verified to be true. The problem of cohomological rigidity for small covers is also studied and we have found a whole new series of weakly cohomologically rigid simple polytopes. New examples of manifolds provide the first known examples of quasitoric manifolds in higher dimensions whose orbit polytopes have …
A smooth stably complex manifold is called a totally tangentially/normally split manifold (TTS/TNS-manifold, for short, resp.) if the respective complex tangential/normal vector bundle is stably isomorphic to a Whitney sum of complex linear bundles, resp. In this paper we construct manifolds $M$ s.t. any complex vector bundle over $M$ is stably equivalent to a Whitney sum of complex linear bundles. A quasitoric manifold shares this property iff it is a TNS-manifold. We establish a new criterion of the TNS-property for a quasitoric manifold $M$ via non-semidefiniteness of certain higher-degree …
A quasitoric manifold (resp. a small cover) is a $2n$-dimensional (resp. an $n$-dimensional) smooth closed manifold with an effective locally standard action of $(S^1)^n$ (resp. $(\mathbb Z_2)^n$) whose orbit space is combinatorially an $n$-dimensional simple convex polytope $P$. In this paper we study them when $P$ is a product of simplices. A generalized Bott tower over $\F$, where $\F=\C$ or $\R$, is a sequence of projective bundles of the Whitney sum of $\F$-line bundles starting with a point. Each stage of the tower over $\F$, which we call a generalized Bott manifold, provides an example…
A Bott tower is the total space of a tower of fibre bundles with base CP^1 and fibres CP^1. Every Bott tower of height n is a smooth projective toric variety whose moment polytope is combinatorially equivalent to an n-cube. A circle action is semifree if it is free on the complement to fixed points. We show that a (quasi)toric manifold (in the sense of Davis-Januszkiewicz) over an n-cube with a semifree circle action and isolated fixed points is a Bott tower. Then we show that every Bott tower obtained in this way is topologically trivial, that is, homeomorphic to a product of 2-spheres. This …
We extend work of Davis and Januszkiewicz by considering {\it omnioriented} toric manifolds, whose canonical codimension-2 submanifolds are independently oriented. We show that each omniorientation induces a canonical stably complex structure, which is respected by the torus action and so defines an element of an equivariant cobordism ring. As an application, we compute the complex bordism groups and cobordism ring of an arbitrary omnioriented toric manifold. We consider a family of examples $B_{i,j}$, which are toric manifolds over products of simplices, and verify that their natural stably c…
Let $\mathcal{P}$ be the class of combinatorial 3-dimensional simple polytopes $P$, different from a tetrahedron, without 3- and 4-belts of facets. By the results of Pogorelov and Andreev, a polytope $P$ admits a realisation in Lobachevsky space $\mathbb{L}^3$ with right dihedral angles if and only if $P \in \mathcal{P}$. We consider two families of smooth manifolds defined by regular 4-colourings of Pogorelov polytopes P: six-dimensional quasitoric manifolds over $P$ and three-dimensional small covers of $P$; the latter are also known as three-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds of Loebell type.…
Continuing work begin in arXiv:1910.12609, we interpret the Hurewicz homomorphism for Baker and Richter's noncommutative complex cobordism spectrum $Mξ$ in terms of characteristic numbers (indexed by quasi-symmetric functions) for complex-oriented quasitoric manifolds, and show that automorphisms or cohomology operations on this representation are defined by a `renormalization' Hopf algebra of formal diffeomorphisms at the origin of the noncommutative line, previously considered (over $Q$) in quantum electrodynamics. The resulting structure can be presented in purely algebraic terms, as a grou…
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off …
Our primary aim is to develop a theory of equivariant genera for stably complex manifolds equipped with compatible actions of a torus T^k. In the case of omnioriented quasitoric manifolds, we present computations that depend only on their defining combinatorial data; these draw inspiration from analogous calculations in toric geometry, which seek to express arithmetic, elliptic, and associated genera of toric varieties in terms only of their fans. Our theory focuses on the universal toric genus Φ, which was introduced independently by Krichever and Loeffler in 1974, albeit from radically diffe…
A family of closed manifolds is called cohomologically rigid if a cohomology ring isomorphism implies a diffeomorphism for any two manifolds in the family. We establish cohomological rigidity for large families of 3-dimensional and 6-dimensional manifolds defined by 3-dimensional polytopes. We consider the class P of 3-dimensional combinatorial simple polytopes, different from a tetrahedron, whose facets do not form 3- and 4-belts. This class includes mathematical fullerenes, i.e. simple 3-polytopes with only 5-gonal and 6-gonal facets. By a theorem of Pogorelov, any polytope from P admits a r…
An arrow matrix is a matrix with zeroes outside the main diagonal, first row, and first column. We consider the space $M_{St_n,λ}$ of Hermitian arrow $(n+1)\times (n+1)$-matrices with fixed simple spectrum $λ$. We prove that this space is a smooth $2n$-manifold, and its smooth structure is independent on the spectrum. Next, this manifold carries the locally standard torus action: we describe the topology and combinatorics of its orbit space. If $n\geqslant 3$, the orbit space $M_{St_n,λ}/T^n$ is not a polytope, hence this manifold is not quasitoric. However, there is a natural permutation acti…
