Benjamini,Haggstrom, Peres and Steif introduced the model of dynamical random walk on Z^d. This is a continuum of random walks indexed by a parameter t. They proved that for d=3,4 there almost surely exist t such that the random walk at time t visits the origin infinitely often, but for d > 4 there almost surely do not exist such t. Hoffman showed that for d=2 there almost surely exists t such that the random walk at time t visits the origin only finitely many times. We refine the results of Hoffman for dynamical random walk on Z^2, showing that with probability one there are times when the origin is visited only a finite number of times while other points are visited infinitely often.
We define a dynamical simple symmetric random walk in one dimension, and show that there almost surely exist exceptional times at which the walk tends to infinity. This is in contrast to the usual dynamical simple symmetric random walk in one dimension, for which such exceptional times are known not to exist. In fact we show that the set of exceptional times has Hausdorff dimension $1/2$ almost surely, and give bounds on the rate at which the walk diverges at such times. We also show noise sensitivity of the event that our random walk is positive after $n$ steps. In fact this event is maximall…
The dynamical discrete web (DyDW),introduced in recent work of Howitt and Warren, is a system of coalescing simple symmetric one-dimensional random walks which evolve in an extra continuous dynamical time parameter τ. The evolution is by independent updating of the underlying Bernoulli variables indexed by discrete space-time that define the discrete web at any fixed τ. In this paper, we study the existence of exceptional (random) values of τwhere the paths of the web do not behave like usual random walks and the Hausdorff dimension of the set of exceptional such τ. Our results are motivated b…
The dynamical discrete web is a system of one-dimensional coalescing random walks that evolves in an extra dynamical time parameter. At any deterministic dynamical time, the paths behave as coalescing simple symmetric random walks. This paper studies the existence of (random) exceptional dynamical times at which the paths violate certain almost sure properties of random walks. It was shown in 2009 by Fontes, Newman, Ravishankar and Schertzer that there exist exceptional times at which the path starting from the origin violates the law of the iterated logarithm. Their results gave exceptional t…
Benjamini, Haggstrom, Peres and Steif introduced the concept of a dynamical random walk. This is a continuous family of random walks, {S_n(t)}. Benjamini et. al. proved that if d=3 or d=4 then there is an exceptional set of t such that {S_n(t)} returns to the origin infinitely often. In this paper we consider a dynamical random walk on Z^2. We show that with probability one there exists t such that {S_n(t)} never returns to the origin. This exceptional set of times has dimension one. This proves a conjecture of Benjamini et. al.
If $\mathcal{W}$ is the simple random walk on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$, then $\mathcal{W}$ induces a random walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ on any spanning subgraph $G\subset \mathbb{Z}^2$ of the lattice as follows: viewing $\mathcal{W}$ as a uniformly random infinite word on the alphabet $\{\mathbf{x}, -\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{y}, -\mathbf{y} \}$, the walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ starts at the origin and follows the directions specified by $\mathcal{W}$, only accepting steps of $\mathcal{W}$ along which the walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ does not exit $G$. For any fixed subgraph $G \subset \mathbb{Z}^2$, the walk $\…
Consider a sequence {X(i,0) : i = 1, ..., n} of i.i.d. random variables. Associate to each X(i,0) an independent mean-one Poisson clock. Every time a clock rings replace that X-variable by an independent copy. In this way, we obtain i.i.d. stationary processes {X(i,t) : t >= 0} (i=1,2, ...) whose invariant distribution is the law of X(1,0). Benjamini, Haggstrom, Peres, and Steif (2003) introduced the dynamical walk S(n,t) = X(1,t) + ... + X(n,t), and proved among other things that the LIL holds for {S(n,t) : n =1,2, ...} simultaneously for all t. In other words, the LIL is dynamically stable. …
This paper considers the QBD approximation of a special class of two-dimensional reflecting random walks (2D-RRWs). A typical example of the 2D-RRWs is a two-node Jackson network with cooperative servers. The main contribution of this paper is to provide simple upper bounds for the relative absolute difference between the time-averaged functionals of the original 2D-RRW and its QBD approximation.
In the proof of the invariance principle for locally perturbed periodic Lorentz process with finite horizon, a lot of delicate results were needed concerning the recurrence properties of its unperturbed version. These were analogous to the similar properties of Simple Symmetric Random Walk. However, in the case of Lorentz process with infinite horizon, the analogous results for the corresponding random walk are not known, either. In this paper, these properties are ascertained for the appropriate random walk (this happens to be in the non normal domain of attraction of the normal law). As a to…
The dynamical discrete web (DDW), introduced in recent work of Howitt and Warren, is a system of coalescing simple symmetric one-dimensional random walks which evolve in an extra continuous dynamical parameter s. The evolution is by independent updating of the underlying Bernoulli variables indexed by discrete space-time that define the discrete web at any fixed s. In this paper, we study the existence of exceptional (random) values of s where the paths of the web do not behave like usual random walks and the Hausdorff dimension of the set of such exceptional s. Our results are motivated by th…
We consider a recurrent random walk (RW) in random environment (RE) on a strip. We prove that if the RE is i. i. d. and its distribution is not supported by an algebraic subsurface in the space of parameters defining the RE then the RW exhibits the "(log t)-squared" asymptotic behaviour. The exceptional algebraic subsurface is described by an explicit system of algebraic equations. One-dimensional walks with bounded jumps in a RE are treated as a particular case of the strip model. If the one dimensional RE is i. i. d., then our approach leads to a complete and constructive classification of p…
In the present paper, Ito formula and Tanaka formula for a special kind of symmetric random walk in the complex plain are studied. The random walk is called Parisian walk, and its local time is defined to be the number of exit from some regions.
We study the persistence exponent for random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) with integer values and for some special random walks in random environment in $\mathbb Z^2$ including random walks in $\mathbb Z^2$ with random orientations of the horizontal layers.
Consider a sequence of i.i.d. random variables $X_n$ where each random variable is refreshed independently according to a Poisson clock. At any fixed time $t$ the law of the sequence is the same as for the sequence at time 0 but at random times almost sure properties of the sequence may be violated. If there are such \emph{exceptional times} we say that the property is \emph{dynamically sensitive}, otherwise we call it \emph{dynamically stable}. In this note we consider branching random walks on Cayley graphs and prove that recurrence and transience are dynamically stable in the sub-and superc…
In this paper we consider the argmin process of random walks and Lévy processes. We prove that they enjoy the Markov property, and provide their transition kernels in some special cases.
We study the path behavior of the symmetric walk on some special comb-type subsets of ${\mathbb Z}^2$ which are obtained from ${\mathbb Z}^2$ by generalizing the comb having finitely many horizontal lines instead of one.
We give an alternative proof of a result by N. Gantert, Y. Hu and Z. Shi on the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of the branching random walk killed below a linear boundary, in the special case of deterministic binary branching and bounded random walk steps. Connections with the Brunet-Derrida theory of stochastic fronts are discussed.
The harmonic measure $ν$ on the boundary of the group $Sol$ associated to a discrete random walk of law $μ$ was described by Kaimanovich. We investigate when it is absolutely continuous or singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. By ratio entropy over speed, we show that any countable non-abelian subgroup admits a finite first moment non-degenerate $μ$ with singular harmonic measure $ν$. On the other hand, we prove that some random walks with finitely supported step distribution admit a regular harmonic measure. Finally, we construct some exceptional random walks with arbitrarily small speed…
We introduce a new self-interacting random walk on the integers in a dynamic random environment and show that it converges to a pure diffusion in the scaling limit. We also find a lower bound on the diffusion coefficient in some special cases. With minor changes the same argument can be used to prove the scaling limit of the corresponding walk in Z^d.
Consider the long-range percolation model on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in which all nearest-neighbour edges are present and otherwise $x$ and $y$ are connected with probability $q_{x,y}:=1-\exp(-|x-y|^{-s})$, independently of the state of other edges. Throughout the regime where the model yields a locally-finite graph, (i.e.\ for $s>d$,) we determine the spectral dimension of the associated simple random walk, apart from at the exceptional value $d=1$, $s=2$, where the spectral dimension is discontinuous. Towards this end, we present various on-diagonal heat kernel bounds, a number of…
We prove that a uniformized variant of both the Rosenthal walk \cite{Rosenthal} and the Kac random walk \cite{Kac} on SO(n) mixes in $\cO(n^3)$ steps in total variation distance. The proof also extends easily to Rosenthal walk with fixed angle $θ\neq π$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first polynomial time bound for both walks. The techniques employed are mainly from representation theory of SO(n). But a crucial new ingredient is the interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of the character ratio as counting the number of particle cascade paths arising from the classical branching…
In this article, we study special points of a simple random walk and a Gaussian free field, such as (nearly) favorite points, late points and high points. In section $2$, we extend results of [19] and suggest open problems for $d=2$. In section $3$, we give a survey on the geometric structures of (nearly) favorite points and late points of a simple random walk and high points of a Gaussian free field in two dimension.
We prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a one-dimensional random walk driven by a simple symmetric exclusion process. This model can be viewed as a special case of the random walk in a balanced random environment, for which the weak quenched limit is constructed as a function of the invariant measure of the environment viewed from the walk. We bypass the need to show the existence of this invariant measure. Instead, we find the limit of the quadratic variation of the walk and give an explicit formula for it.
Let $W$ be an integer valued random variable satisfying $E[W] =: δ\geq 0$ and $P(W<0)>0$, and consider a self-interacting random walk that behaves like a simple symmetric random walk with the exception that on the first visit to any integer $x\in \mathbb{Z}$ the size of the next step is an independent random variable with the same distribution as $W$. We show that this self-interacting random walk is recurrent if $δ\leq 1$ and transient if $δ>1$. This is a special case of our main result which concerns the recurrence and transience of excited random walks (or cookie random walks) with non-near…
Random walk on changing graphs is considered. For sequences of finite graphs increasing monotonically towards a limiting infinite graph, we establish transition probability upper bounds. It yields sufficient transience criteria for simple random walk on slowly growing graphs, upon knowing the volume and Cheeger constant of each graph. For much more specialized cases, we establish matching lower bounds, and deduce sufficient (weak) recurrence criteria. We also address recurrence directly in relation to a universality conjecture of [DHS]. We answer a related question of [SZ, Problem 1.8] about "…
We prove an invariance principle for the bridge of a random walk conditioned to stay positive, when the random walk is in the domain of attraction of a stable law, both in the discrete and in the absolutely continuous setting. This includes as a special case the convergence under diffusive rescaling of random walk excursions toward the normalized Brownian excursion, for zero mean, finite variance random walks. The proof exploits a suitable absolute continuity relation together with some local asymptotic estimates for random walks conditioned to stay positive, recently obtained by Vatutin and W…
How many shuffles are needed to mix up a deck of cards? This question may be answered in the language of a random walk on the symmetric group, $S_{52}$. This generalises neatly to the study of random walks on finite groups, themselves a special class of Markov chains. Ergodic random walks exhibit nice limiting behaviour, and both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the convergence to this limiting behaviour is examined. A particular qualitative behaviour, the cut-off phenomenon, occurs in many examples. For random walks exhibiting this behaviour, after a period of time, convergence to …
Let $X_1$, $X_2$, $...$ be a sequence of independently and identically distributed random variables with $\mathsf{E}X_1=0$, and let $S_0=0$ and $S_t=S_{t-1}+X_t$, $t=1,2,...$, be a random walk. Denote $τ={cases}\inf\{t>1: S_t\leq0\}, &\text{if} \ X_1>0, 1, &\text{otherwise}. {cases}$ Let $α$ denote a positive number, and let $L_α$ denote the number of level-crossings from the below (or above) across the level $α$ during the interval $[0, τ]$. Under quite general assumption, an inequality for the expected number of level-crossings is established. Under some special assumptions, it is proved tha…
We consider an analogue of the Kac random walk on the special orthogonal group $SO(N)$, in which at each step a random rotation is performed in a randomly chosen 2-plane of $\bR^N$. We obtain sharp asymptotics for the rate of convergence in total variance distance, establishing a cut-off phenomenon in the large $N$ limit. In the special case where the angle of rotation is deterministic this confirms a conjecture of Rosenthal \cite{Rosenthal}. Under mild conditions we also establish a cut-off for convergence of the walk to stationarity under the $L^2$ norm. Depending on the distribution of the …
Wildberger's construction enables us to obtain a hypergroup from a special graph via random walks. We will give a probability theoretic interpretation to products on the hypergroup. The hypergroup can be identified with a commutative algebra whose basis is transition matrices. We will estimate the operator norm of such a transition matrix and clarify a relationship between their matrix products and random walks.
We derive explicit formulae for the expected volume and the expected number of facets of the convex hull of several multidimensional Gaussian random walks in terms of the Gaussian persistence probabilities. Special cases include the already known results about the convex hull of a single Gaussian random walk and the $d$-dimensional Gaussian polytope with or without the origin.
We develop a new approach to random walks on de Bruijn graphs over the alphabet $A$ through right congruences on $A^k$, defined using the natural right action of $A^+$. A major role is played by special right congruences, which correspond to semaphore codes and allow an easier computation of the hitting time. We show how right congruences can be approximated by special right congruences.
