We show that certain differences of products of $P$-partition generating functions are positive in the basis of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions L_α. This result interpolates between recent Schur positivity and monomial positivity results of the same flavor. We study the case of chains in detail, introducing certain ``cell transfer'' operations on compositions and an interesting related ``L-positivity'' poset. We introduce and study quasi-symmetric functions called ``wave Schur functions'' and use them to establish, in the case of chains, that the difference of products we study is itself equal to a single generating function K_{P,θ} for a labeled poset (P,θ). In the course of our investigations we establish some factorization properties of the ring of quasisymmetric functions.
Determining if a symmetric function is Schur-positive is a prevalent and, in general, a notoriously difficult problem. In this paper we study the Schur-positivity of a family of symmetric functions. Given a partition λ, we denote by λ^c its complement in a square partition (m^m). We conjecture a Schur-positivity criterion for symmetric functions of the form s_{μ'}s_{μ^c}-s_{λ'}s_{λ^c}, where λis a partition of weight |μ|-1 contained in μand the complement of μis taken in the same square partition as the complement of λ. We prove the conjecture in many cases.
The $e$-positivity conjecture and the $e$-unimodality conjecture of chromatic quasisymmetric functions are proved for some classes of natural unit interval orders. Recently, J. Shareshian and M. Wachs introduced chromatic quasisymmetric functions as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions and conjectured the $e$-positivity and the $e$-unimodality of these functions. The $e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions implies the $e$-positivity of corresponding chromatic symmetric functions, and our work resolves Stanley's conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions of $(3+…
In this paper, we give a combinatorial proof of a positivity result of Chern related to Andrews's $\mathcal{EO}^*$-type partitions. This combinatorial proof comes after reframing Chern's result in terms of copartitions. Using this new perspective, we also reprove an overpartition result of Chern by showing that it comes essentially "for free" from our combinatorial proof and some basic properties of copartitions. Finally, the application of copartitions leads us to more general positivity conjectures for families of both infinite and finite products, with a proof in one special case.
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets with respect to the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Lin, Ma and Zhang. This is accomplished by proving the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials of certain ordered labeled trees, which are in bijection with quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets. As an application, we provide an alternative proof of the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials on Stirling permutations of multisets.
In 1993, Stanley and Stembridge conjectured that a chromatic symmetric function of any $(3+1)$-free poset is $e$-positive. Guay-Paquet reduced the conjecture to $(3+1)$- and $(2+2)$-free posets which are also called natural unit interval orders. Shareshian and Wachs defined chromatic quasisymmetric functions, generalizing chromatic symmetric functions, and conjectured that a chromatic quasisymmetric function of any natural unit interval order is $e$-positive and $e$-unimodal. For a given natural interval order, there is a corresponding partition $λ$ and we denote the chromatic quasisymmetric f…
Given an element in a finite-dimensional real vector space, $V$, that is a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for some basis $B$, we compute the probability that it is furthermore a nonnegative linear combination of basis vectors for a second basis, $A$. We then apply this general result to combinatorially compute the probability that a symmetric function is Schur-positive (recovering the recent result of Bergeron--Patrias--Reiner), $e$-positive or $h$-positive. Similarly we compute the probability that a quasisymmetric function is quasisymmetric Schur-positive or fundamental-posi…
We give combinatorial proofs that certain families of differences of products of Schur functions are monomial-positive. We show in addition that such monomial-positivity is to be expected of a large class of generating functions with combinatorial definitions similar to Schur functions. These generating functions are defined on posets with labelled Hasse diagrams and include for example generating functions of Stanley's $(P,ω)$-partitions.
This paper consists of two prongs. Firstly, we prove that any Specht module labelled by a 2-separated partition is semisimple and we completely determine its decomposition as a direct sum of graded simple modules. Secondly, we apply these results and other modular representation theoretic techniques on the study of Kronecker coefficients and hence verify Saxl's conjecture for a large new class of partitions.
We consider families of quasisymmetric functions with the property that if a symmetric function $f$ is a positive sum of functions in one of these families, then f is necessarily a positive sum of Schur functions. Furthermore, in each of the families studied, we give a combinatorial description of the Schur coefficients of $f$. We organize six such families into a poset, where functions in higher families in the poset are always positive integer sums of functions in each of the lower families. This poset includes the Schur functions, the quasisymmetric Schur functions, the fundamental quasisym…
The problem to decide whether a given multivariate (quasi-)rational function has only positive coefficients in its power series expansion has a long history. It dates back to Szego in 1933 who showed certain quasi-rational function to be positive, in the sense that all the series coefficients are positive, using an involved theory of special functions. In contrast to the simplicity of the statement, the method was surprisingly difficult. This dependency motivated further research for positivity of (quasi-)rational functions. More and more (quasi-)rational functions have been proven to be posit…
Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, and Shareshian and Wachs introduced a refinement, namely the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a labeled graph. In this paper, we define the chromatic quasisymmetric function of a directed graph, which agrees with the Shareshian-Wachs definition in the acyclic case. We give an F-basis expansion for all digraphs in terms of a permutation statistic, which we call G-descents. We use this expansion to derive a p-positivity formula for all digraphs with symmetric chromatic quasisymmetric functions. We show that the chromatic quasisymme…
We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs…
We establish a poset structure on combinatorial bases of multivariate polynomials defined by positive expansions, and study properties common to bases in this poset. Included are the well-studied bases of Schubert polynomials, Demazure characters and Demazure atoms; the quasi-key, fundamental and monomial slide bases introduced in 2017 by Assaf and the author; and a new basis we introduce completing this poset structure. We show the product of a Schur polynomial and an element of a basis in this poset expands positively in that basis; in particular, we give the first Littlewood-Richardson rule…
We make a systematic study of a new combinatorial construction called a dual equivalence graph. We axiomatize these graphs and prove that their generating functions are symmetric and Schur positive. This provides a universal method for establishing the symmetry and Schur positivity of quasisymmetric functions.
We generalise the expansion formulae of Musiker, Schiffler and Williams, obtained for cluster algebras from orientable surfaces, to a larger class of coefficients which we call principal laminations. In doing so, for any quasi-cluster algebra from a non-orientable surface, we are able to obtain expansion formulae for each cluster variable with respect to any initial quasi-triangulation $T$, and any choice of principal lamination. Moreover, generalising the `separation of additions' formula of Fomin and Zelevinsky, we settle a conjecture of Lam and Pylyavskyy in the setting of quasi-cluster alg…
Over the past years, major attention has been drawn to the question of identifying Schur-positive sets, i.e. sets of permutations whose associated quasisymmetric function is symmetric and can be written as a non-negative sum of Schur symmetric functions. The set of arc permutations, i.e. the set of permutations $π$ in $S_n$ such that for any $1\leq j \leq n$, $\{π(1),π(2),\dots,π(j)\}$ is an interval in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is one of the most noticeable examples. This paper introduces a new type B extension of Schur-positivity to signed permutations based on Chow's quasisymmetric functions and gener…
The purpose of this note is to introduce a new family of quasi-symmetric functions called LLT cumulants and discuss its properties. We define LLT cumulants using the algebraic framework for conditional cumulants and we prove that the Macdonald cumulant has an explicit positive expansion in terms of LLT cumulants of ribbon shapes, generalizing the classical decomposition of Macdonald polynomials. We also find a natural combinatorial interpretation of the LLT cumulant of a given directed graph as a weighted generating function of colorings of its subgraphs. We use this graph theoretical framewor…
A conjecture on the monotonicity of t-core partitions in an article of Stanton [Open positivity conjectures for integer partitions, Trends Math., 2:19-25, 1999] has been the catalyst for much recent research on t-core partitions. We conjecture Stanton-like monotonicity results comparing self-conjugate (t+2)- and t-core partitions of n. We obtain partial results toward these conjectures for values of t that are large with respect to n, and an application to the block theory of the symmetric and alternating groups. To this end we prove formulas for the number of self-conjugate t-core partitions …
We define dual equivalence for any collection of combinatorial objects endowed with a descent set, and we show that giving a dual equivalence establishes the symmetry and Schur positivity of the quasi-symmetric generating function. We give an explicit formula for the Schur expansion of the generating function in terms of distinguished elements of the dual equivalence classes. These concepts and proofs simplify in the ubiquitous case when the collection of objects has a sufficiently nice reading word.
Let $1\leq k \leq n$ and let $X_n = (x_1, \dots, x_n)$ be a list of $n$ variables. The {\em Boolean product polynomial} $B_{n,k}(X_n)$ is the product of the linear forms $\sum_{i \in S} x_i$ where $S$ ranges over all $k$-element subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$. We prove that Boolean product polynomials are Schur positive. We do this via a new method of proving Schur positivity using vector bundles and a symmetric function operation we call {\em Chern plethysm}. This gives a geometric method for producing a vast array of Schur positive polynomials whose Schur positivity lacks (at present) a com…
The $(P, ω)$-partition generating function of a labeled poset $(P, ω)$ is a quasisymmetric function enumerating certain order-preserving maps from $P$ to $\mathbb{Z}^+$. We study the expansion of this generating function in the recently introduced type 1 quasisymmetric power sum basis $\{ψ_α\}$. Using this expansion, we show that connected, naturally labeled posets have irreducible $P$-partition generating functions. We also show that series-parallel posets are uniquely determined by their partition generating functions. We conclude by giving a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients…
Haglund's conjecture states that $\dfrac{\langle J_λ(q,q^k),s_μ\rangle}{(1-q)^{|λ|}} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}[q]$ for all partitions $λ,μ$ and all non-negative integers $k$, where $J_λ$ is the integral form Macdonald symmetric function and $s_μ$ is the Schur function. This paper proves Haglund's conjecture in the cases when the pair $(λ,μ)$ satisfies $K_{λ,μ}=1$ or $K_{μ',λ'}=1$ where $K$ denotes the Kostka number. We also obtain some general results about the transition matrix between Macdonald symmetric functions and Schur functions.
The distribution of Coxeter descents and block number over the set of fully commutative elements in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$, $\FC(B_n)$, is studied in this paper. We prove that the associated Chow quasi-symmetric generating function is equal to a non-negative sum of products of two Schur functions. The proof involves a decomposition of $\FC(B_n)$ into a disjoint union of two-sided Barbash-Vogan combinatorial cells, a type $B$ extension of Rubey's descent preserving involution on $321$-avoiding permutations and a detailed study of the intersection of $\FC(B_n)$ with $S_n$-cosets which y…
Catalan functions, the graded Euler characteristics of certain vector bundles on the flag variety, are a rich class of symmetric functions which include $k$-Schur functions and parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We prove that Catalan functions indexed by partition weight are the characters of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_\ell)$-generalized Demazure crystals as studied by Lakshmibai-Littelmann-Magyar and Naoi. We obtain Schur positive formulas for these functions, settling conjectures of Chen-Haiman and Shimozono-Weyman. Our approach more generally gives key positive formulas for graded Eul…
By considering type B analogs of permutations and tableaux, we extend abstract dual equivalence to type B in two directions. In one direction, we define involutions on signed permutations and shifted tableaux that give a weak dual equivalence, thereby giving another proof of the Schur positivity of Schur Q- and P-functions. In another direction, we define an abstract shifted dual equivalence parallel to dual equivalence and prove that it can be used to establish Schur P-positivity of a function expressed as a sum of shifted fundamental quasisymmetric functions.
For a partition $\underlineλ = (λ_{1}^{ρ_1}>λ_{2}^{ρ_2}>λ_{3}^{ρ_3}>\ldots>λ_{k}^{ρ_k})$ and its associated finite $\mathcal{R}$-module $\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}=\underset{i=1}{\overset{k}{\oplus}} (\mathcal{R}/π^{λ_i}\mathcal{R})^{ρ_i}$, where $\mathcal{R}$ is a discrete valuation ring, with maximal ideal generated by a uniformizing element $π$, having finite residue field ${\bf k}=\mathcal{R}/π\mathcal{R}\cong \mathbb{F}_q$, the number of orbits of pairs $n_{\underlineλ}(q)= \mid \mathcal{G}_{\underlineλ}\backslash \big(\mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}\times \mathcal{A}_{\underlineλ}\big)\mid$ for…

We study the remarkable Saxl conjecture which states that tensor squares of certain irreducible representations of the symmetric groups S_n contain all irreducibles as their constituents. Our main result is that they contain representations corresponding to hooks and two row Young diagrams. For that, we develop a new sufficient condition for the positivity of Kronecker coefficients in terms of characters, and use combinatorics of rim hook tableaux combined with known results on unimodality of certain partition functions. We also present connections and speculations on random characters of S_n.
We consider the cluster algebra associated to the $Q$-system for $A_r$ as a tool for relating $Q$-system solutions to all possible sets of initial data. We show that the conserved quantities of the $Q$-system are partition functions for hard particles on particular target graphs with weights, which are determined by the choice of initial data. This allows us to interpret the simplest solutions of the Q-system as generating functions for Viennot's heaps on these target graphs, and equivalently as generating functions of weighted paths on suitable dual target graphs. The generating functions tak…
We introduce the quasi-partition algebra $QP_k(n)$ as a centralizer algebra of the symmetric group. This algebra is a subalgebra of the partition algebra and inherits many similar combinatorial properties. We construct a basis for $QP_k(n)$, give a formula for its dimension in terms of the Bell numbers, and describe a set of generators for $QP_k(n)$ as a complex algebra. In addition, we give the dimensions and indexing set of its irreducible representations. We also provide the Bratteli diagram for the tower of quasi-partition algebras (constructed by letting $k$ range over the positive intege…
For positive integers $n, L$ and $s$, consider the following two sets that both contain partitions of $n$ with the difference between the largest and smallest parts bounded by $L$: the first set contains partitions with smallest part $s$, while the second set contains partitions with smallest part at least $s+1$. Let $G_{L,s}(q)$ be the generating series whose coefficient of $q^n$ is difference between the sizes of the above two sets of partitions. This generating series was introduced by Berkovich and Uncu in 2019. Previous results concentrated on the nonnegativity of $G_{L,s}(q)$ in the case…
The purpose of this short article is to announce, and briefly describe, a Maple package, PARTITIONS, that (inter alia) completely automatically discovers, and then proves, explicit expressions (as sums of quasi-polynomials) for pm(n) for any desired m. We do this to demonstrate the power of "rigorous guessing" as facilitated by the quasi-polynomial ansatz.
We study generating functions of ordinary and plane partitions coloured by the action of a finite subgroup of the corresponding special linear group. After reviewing known results for the case of ordinary partitions, we formulate a conjecture concerning a factorisation property of the generating function of coloured plane partitions that can be thought of as an orbifold analogue of a conjecture of Maulik et al., now a theorem, in three-dimensional Donaldson-Thomas theory. We study natural quantisations of the generating functions arising from geometry, discuss a quantised version of our conjec…
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum coh…
Families of quasimodular forms arise naturally in many situations such as curve counting on Abelian surfaces and counting ramified covers of orbifolds. In many cases the family of quasimodular forms naturally arises as the coefficients of a Taylor expansion of a Jacobi form. In this note we give examples of such expansions that arise in the study of partition statistics. The crank partition statistic has gathered much interest recently. For instance, Atkin and Garvan showed that the generating functions for the moments of the crank statistic are quasimodular forms. The two variable generating …
