We develop a new technique for studying the boundary limiting behavior of a holomorphic function on a domain $Ω$ -- both in one and several complex variables. The approach involves two new localized maximal functions. As a result of this methodology, theorems of Calderón type about local boundary behavior on a set of positive measure may be proved in a new and more natural way. We also study the question of nontangential boundedness (on a set of positive measure) versus admissible boundedness. Under suitable hypotheses, these two conditions are shown to be equivalent.
It is shown that the Laurent series of a holomorphic function smooth up to the boundary on a Reinhardt domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ converges unconditionally to the function in the Fréchet topology of the space of functions smooth up to the boundary.
In this paper we give some quantative characteristics of boundary asymptotic behavior of semigroups of holomorphic self-mappings of the unit disk including the limit curvature of their trajectories at the boundary Denjoy--Wolff point. This enable us to establish an asymptotic rigidity property for semigroups of parabolic type.
We give a parameter version of Graham-Kerzman approximation theorem for bounded holomorphic functions on strictly pseudoconvex domains. As an application, we present some uniform estimates for the boundary behaviour of the Kobayashi and Carathéodory pseudodistences on such domains.
In this paper, we prove a general Schwarz lemma at the boundary for holomorphic mappings from the polydisc to the unit ball in any dimensions. For the special case of one complex variable, the obtained results give the classic boundary Schwarz lemma.
In this paper we study holomorphic approximation using boundary value problems for $\bar\partial$ on an annulus in the Hilbert space setting. The associated boundary conditions for $\bar\partial$ are the mixed boundary problems on an annulus. We characterize pseudoconvexity and Runge type property of the domain by the vanishing of related $L^2$ cohomology groups.
We obtain a conceptually new differential geometric proof of P.F. Klembeck's result that the holomorphic sectional curvature of a strictly pseudoconvex domain approaches (in the boundary limit) the constant sectional curvature of the Bergman metric of the unit ball.
We prove a boundary version of the open mapping theorem for holomorphic maps between strongly pseudoconvex domains. That is, we prove that the local image of a holomorphic map $f:D\to D'$ close to a boundary regular contact point $p\in \de D$ where the Jacobian is bounded from zero along normal non-tangential directions has to eventually contain every cone (and more generally every admissible region) with vertex at $f(p)$.
R. Guralnick (Linear Algebra Appl. 99, 85-96, 1988) proved that two holomorphic matrices on a noncompact connected Riemann surface, which are locally holomorphically similar, are globally holomorphically similar. We generalize this to (possibly, non-smooth) one-dimensional Stein spaces. For Stein spaces of arbitrary dimension, we prove that global $\mathcal C^\infty$ similarity implies global holomorphic similarity, whereas global continuous similarity is not sufficient.
We prove a theorem on separation of boundary null points for generators of continuous semigroups of holomorphic self-mappings of the unit disk in the complex plane. Our construction demonstrates the existence and importance of a particular role of the binary operation $\circ$ given by $1 / f \circ g = 1/f + 1/g$ on generators.
We survey a number of recent generalizations and sharpenings of Nehari's extension of Schwarz' lemma for holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk. In particular, we discuss the case of infinitely many critical points and its relation to the zero sets and invariant subspaces for Bergman spaces, as well as the case of equality at the boundary.
In 1955, Lehto showed that, for every measurable function $ψ$ on the unit circle $\mathbb T,$ there is function $f$ holomorphic in the unit disc $\mathbb D,$ having $ψ$ as radial limit a.e. on $\mathbb T.$ We consider an analogous boundary value problem, where the unit disc is replaced by a Stein domain on a complex manifold and radial approach to a boundary point $p$ is replaced by (asymptotically) total approach to $p.$
We prove a Fatou type theorem for bounded functions with d_J -bar differential of a controled growth on smoothly bounded domains in an almost complex manifold.
We consider the behaviour at a boundary point of an open subset $U\subset\mathbb{C}$ of distributions that are holomorphic on $U$ and belong to what are called negative Lipschitz classes. The result explains the significance for holomorphic functions of series of Wiener type involving Hausdorff contents of dimension between $0$ and $1$. We begin with a survey about function spaces and capacities that sets the problem in context and reviews the relevant general theory. The techniques used include the construction of a special partition of the identity that may be of independent interest.
We present a result on existence of some kind of peak functions for $\C$-convex domains and for the symmetrized polydisc. Then we apply the latter result to show the equivariance of the set of peak points for $A(D)$ under proper holomorphic mappings. Additionally, we present a description of the set of peak points in the class of bounded pseudoconvex Reinhardt domains.
We establish some estimates of the the angular derivatives from below for holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk at one and two fixed points of the unit circle provided there is no fixed point inside the unit disk. The results complement Cowen-Pommerenke and Anderson-Vasil'ev type estimates in the case of univalent functions. We use the method of extremal length and propose a new semigroup approach to deriving inequalities for holomorphic self-maps of the disk which are not necessarily univalent using known inequalities for univalent functions. This approach allowed us to receive a new Osserma…
Real analytic functions on the boundary of the sphere which have separate holomorphic extension along the complex lines through a boundary point have holomorphic extension to the ball. This was proved in a previous preprint by an argument of CR geometry. We give here an elementary proof based on the expansion in holomorphic and antiholomorphic powers.
In this paper we prove a general result of the ``Hopf lemma'' type for CR mappings, with nonidentically vanishing Jacobians, between real hypersurfaces in C^n with smooth or real analytic boundaries. Applications of this result to finiteness and holomorphic extendibility of such mappings are also given. The novelty here is that we make no assumption on the nonflatness of the mapping or its Jacobian, nor do we assume that the hypersurfaces are pseudoconvex or minimally convex.
Let $D\subset \C^n,$ $G\subset \C^m$ be pseudoconvex domains, let $A$ (resp. $B$) be an open subset of the boundary $\partial D$ (resp. $\partial G$) and let $X$ be the 2-fold cross $((D\cup A)\times B)\cup (A\times(B\cup G)).$ Suppose in addition that the domain $D$ (resp. $G$) is {\it locally $\mathcal{C}^2$ smooth on $A$} (resp. $B$). We shall determine the "envelope of holomorphy" $\hat{X}$ of $X$ in the sense that any function continuous on $X$ and separately holomorphic on $(A\times G) \cup (D\times B)$ extends to a function continuous on $\hat{X}$ and holomorphic on the interior of $\ha…
We establish a Fatou-type Theorem for $J$-holomorphic mappings that are bounded in an appropriate sense and we prove the Blaschke condition for their zero sets. We also prove a Privalov-type uniqueness Theorem for pairs of $J$-holomorphic mappings.
It is a classical theorem that if a function is integrable along the boundary of the unit circle, then the function is the nontangential limit of a holomorphic function on the open disc if and only if its Fourier coefficients for nonnegative integers are zero. In this article we generalize this result to higher complex dimensions by proving that for an integrable function on the unit sphere, it is ``boundary trace'' of a holomorphic function on the open unit ball if and only if two particular families of integral equations are satisfied. To do this, we use the theory of Hardy spaces as well as…
In this paper, we prove Huang et al.'s conjecture stated that if $f$ is a holomorphic function on $Δ^+:=\{z\in \mathbb C \colon |z|<1,~\mathrm{Im}(z)>0\}$ with $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-smooth extension up to $(-1,1)$ such that $f$ maps $(-1,1)$ into a cone $Γ_C:=\{z\in \mathbb C\colon |\mathrm{Im} (z)| \leq C|\mathrm{Re} (z)|\}$, for some positive number $C$, and $f$ vanishes to infinite order at $0$, then $f$ vanishes identically. In addition, some regularity properties of the Riemann mapping functions on the boundary and an example concerning Huang et al.'s conjecture are also given.
Let D be a convex domain with smooth boundary in complex space and let f be a continuous function on the boundary of D. Suppose that f holomorphically extends to the extremal discs tangent to a convex subdomain of D. We prove that f holomorphically extends to D. The result partially answers a conjecture by Globevnik and Stout of 1991.
In this paper, we give a general boundary Schwarz lemma for holomorphic mappings between unit balls in any dimensions. It is proved that if the mapping $f\in C^{1+α}$ at $z_0\in \partial \mathbb B^n$ with $f(z_0)=w_0\in \partial \mathbb B^N$ for any $n,N\geq 1$, then the Jacobian matrix $J_f(z_0)$ maps the tangent space $T_{z_0}(\partial \mathbb B^n)$ to $T_{w_0}(\partial \mathbb B^N)$, and the holomorphic tangent space $T^{(1,0)}_{z_0}(\partial \mathbb B^n)$ to $T^{(1,0)}_{w_0}(\partial \mathbb B^N)$ as well.
Let X be a compact manifold with boundary and let L^k be a high power of a hermitian holomorphic line bundle over X. When X has no boundary, Demailly's holomorphic Morse inequalities give asymptotic bounds on the dimensions on the Dolbeault cohomology groups with values in L^k. We extend Demailly's inequalities to the case when X has a boundary by adding a boundary term expressed as a certain average of the curvature of the line bundle and the Levi curvature of the boundary. Examples are given that show that the inequalities are sharp and it is shown that they are compatible with hole filling.…
In this paper, we generalize a recent work of Liu et al. from the open unit ball $\mathbb B^n$ to more general bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains with $C^2$ boundary. It turns out that part of the main result in this paper is in some certain sense just a part of results in a work of Bracci and Zaitsev. However, the proofs are significantly different: the argument in this paper involves a simple growth estimate for the Carathéodory metric near the boundary of $C^2$ domains and the well-known Graham's estimate on the boundary behavior of the Carathéodory metric on strongly pseudoconvex domain…
Given a domain of holomorphy $D$ in $\mathbb{C}^N$, $N\geq 2$, we show that the set of holomorphic functions in $D$ whose cluster sets along any finite length paths to the boundary of $D$ is maximal, is residual, densely lineable and spaceable in the space $\mathcal{O}(D)$ of holomorphic functions in $D$. Besides, if $D$ is a strictly pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^N$, and if a suitable family of smooth curves $γ(x,r)$, $x\in bD$, $r\in [0,1)$, ending at a point of $bD$ is given, then we exhibit a spaceable, densely lineable and residual subset of $\mathcal{O}(D)$, every element $f$ of whi…
In this paper we establish two boundary versions of the Schwarz lemma. The first is for general holomorphic self maps of bounded convex domains with $C^2$ boundary. This appears to be the first boundary Schwarz lemma for general holomorphic self maps that requires no strong pseudoconvexity or finite type assumptions. The second is for biholomorphisms of domains who have an invariant Kähler metric with bounded sectional curvature. This second result applies to holomorphic homogeneous regular domains and appears to be the first boundary Schwarz lemma that makes no assumptions on the regularity o…
We study the approximation of J-holomorphic maps continuous to the boundary from ma domain in the complex plane into an almost complex manifold by maps J-holomorphic to the boundary, giving partial results in the non-integrable case. For the integrable case, we study arcs in complex manifolds and establish the existence of neighborhoods biholomorphic to open sets in Euclidean space for several classes of arcs. As an application, we obtain $\mathcal{C}^k$ approximation of holomorphic maps continuous to the boundary into complex manifolds by maps holomorphic to the boundary, provided the boundar…
Functions that are holomorphic and Lipschitz in a smoothly bounded domain enjoy a gain in the order of Lipschitz regularity in the complex tangential directions near the boundary. We describe this gain explicitly in terms of the defining function near points of finite type in the boundary.
We show that holomorphic functions of polynomial growth on domains with corners have distributional boundary values in an appropriate sense, provided the corners are generic CR manifolds. We prove an analog of the Bochner-Hartogs theorem for these boundary values for the simplest such domains, the product domains.
Given a bounded n-connected domain in the plane bounded by non-intersecting Jordan curves, and given one point on each boundary curve, L. Bieberbach proved that there exists a proper holomorphic mapping of the domain onto the unit disc that is an n-to-one branched covering with the properties that it extends continuously to the boundary and maps each boundary curve one-to-one onto the unit circle, and it maps each given point on the boundary to the point 1 in the unit circle. We modify a proof by H. Grunsky of Bieberbach's result to show that there is a rational function of 2n+2 complex variab…
Consider a compact surface $\mathscr{R}$ with distinguished points $z_1,\ldots,z_n$ and conformal maps $f_k$ from the unit disk into non-overlapping quasidisks on $\mathscr{R}$ taking $0$ to $z_k$. Let $Σ$ be the Riemann surface obtained by removing the closures of the images of $f_k$ from $\mathscr{R}$. We define forms which are meromorphic on $\mathscr{R}$ with poles only at $z_1,\ldots,z_n$, which we call Faber-Tietz forms. These are analogous to Faber polynomials in the sphere. We show that any $L^2$ holomorphic one-form on $Σ$ is uniquely expressible as a series of Faber-Tietz forms. This…
In our previous work, for a given Riemann surface $Y_0$ with marked handle, we investigated geometric properties of the set of marked once-holed tori $X$ allowing holomorphic mappings of $X$ into $Y_0$. It turned out that it is a closed domain with Lipschitz boundary. In the present paper we show that the boundary is never smooth. Also, we evaluate the critical extremal length for the existence of holomorphic mappings in terms of hyperbolic lengths.
Let D be a bounded, finitely connected domain in the complex plane without isolated points in the boundary and let f be a continuous function on the boundary bD. Let F be a continuous extension of f to the closure of D. We prove that f extends holomorphically through D if and only if the degree of F+h is nonnegative for every holomorphic function h on D such that F+h is bounded away from zero near bD.
Let $D$ be a bounded strongly convex domain with smooth boundary in $\mathbb C^N$. Let $(ϕ_t)$ be a continuous semigroup of holomorphic self-maps of $D$. We prove that if $p\in \partial D$ is an isolated boundary regular fixed point for $ϕ_{t_0}$ for some $t_0>0$, then $p$ is a boundary regular fixed point for $ϕ_t$ for all $t\geq 0$. Along the way we also study backward iteration sequences for elliptic holomorphic self-maps of $D$.
We show that each pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb C}^n$ admits a holomorphic map $F$ to ${\mathbb C}^m$ with $|F|\le C_1 e^{C_2 \hatδ^{-6}}$, where $\hatδ$ is the minimum of the boundary distance and $(1+|z|^2)^{-1/2}$, such that every boundary point is a Casorati-Weierstrass point of $F$. Based on this fact, we introduce a new anti-hyperbolic concept --- universal dominability. We also show that for each $α>6$ and each pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb C}^n$, there is a holomorphic function $f$ on $Ω$ with $|f|\le C_αe^{C_α' \hatδ^{-α}}$, such that every boundary point is a Picard…
Let D be a domain in C^n with smooth boundary, of finite 1-type at a point p in the boundary and such that the closure of D has a basis of Stein Runge neighborhoods. Assume that there exists an analytic disc which intersects the closure of D exactly at p. We construct proper holomorphic maps from any open Riemann surface S which are attached to the closure of D exactly at p.
Let $Ω_1,Ω_2$ be two disjoint open sets in $\mathbf C^n$ whose boundaries share a smooth real hypersurface $M$ as relatively open subsets. Assume that $Ω_i$ is equipped with a complex structure $J^i$ which is smooth up to $M$. Assume that the operator norm $\|J^2-J^1\|<2$ on $M$. Let $f$ be a continuous function on the union of $Ω_1,Ω_2, M$. If $f$ is holomorphic with respect to both structures in the open sets, then $f$ must be smooth on the union of $Ω_1$ with $M$. Although the result as stated is far more meaningful for integrable structures, our methods make it much more natural to deal wi…
Our first main result gives assumptions guaranteeing that proper holomorphic maps between Cartan type I bounded symmetric domains have simple block matrix shape, answering positively a question of Mok. The proof is based on the second main result establishing similar phenomenon for local CR maps between arbitrary boundary components of two bounded symmetric domains of the above type. Since boundary components other than Shilov boundaries are Levi-degenerate, our analysis is based on their $2$-nondegeneracy combining Levi forms with higher order tensors.
In this paper we construct a properly embedded holomorphic disc in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^2$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ having a surprising combination of properties: on the one hand, it has finite area and hence is the zero set of a bounded holomorphic function on $\mathbb{B}^2$; on the other hand, its boundary curve is everywhere dense in the sphere $b\mathbb{B}^2$.
Moduli spaces of holomorphic disks in a complex manifold Z, with boundaries constrained to lie in a maximal totally real submanifold P, have recently been found to underlie a number of geometrically rich twistor correspondences. The purpose of this paper is to develop a general Fredholm regularity criterion for holomorphic curves-with-boundary, and then show how this applies, in particular, to various moduli problems of twistor-theoretic interest.
The aim of this study is to understand to what extent a 1-convex domain with Levi-flat boundary is capable of holomorphic functions with slow growth. This paper discusses a typical example of such domain, the space of all the geodesic segments on a hyperbolic compact Riemann surface. Our main finding is an integral formula that produces holomorphic functions on the domain from holomorphic differentials on the Riemann surface. This construction can be seen as a non-trivial example of $L^2$ jet extension of holomorphic functions with optimal constant. As its corollary, it is shown that the weigh…
We study compact complex 3-manifolds admitting holomorphic Riemannian metrics. We prove a uniformization result: up to a finite unramified cover, such a manifold admits a holomorphic Riemannian metric of constant sectionnal curvature.
Let $m,n\geq 1$ are integers and $D$ be a domain in the $$ $\mathbb C^n$ or in the $m$-dimensional real space $\mathbb R^m$. We build positive subharmonic functions on $D$ vanishing on the boundary $\partial D$ of $D$. We use such (test) functions to study the distribution of zero sets of holomorphic functions $f$ on $D\subset \mathbb C^n$ with restrictions on the growth of $f$ near the boundary $\partial D$.
We discuss a general result of holomorphic extension of a real analytic function $f$ defined on the boundary $\partial D$ of a real analytic strictly convex subset $D\subset\subset \C^n$. We show that this follows from the hypothesis of separate holomorphic extension along stationary/extremal discs.
We study boundary values of holomorphic functions in translation-invariant distribution spaces of type $\mathcal{D}'_{E'_{\ast}}$. New edge of the wedge theorems are obtained. The results are then applied to represent $\mathcal{D}'_{E'_{\ast}}$ as a quotient space of holomorphic functions. We also give representations of elements of $\mathcal{D}'_{E'_{\ast}}$ via the heat kernel method. Our results cover as particular instances the cases of boundary values, analytic representations, and heat kernel representations in the context of the Schwartz spaces $\mathcal{D}'_{L^{p}}$, $\mathcal{B}'$, an…
We present some results concerning currents of integration on finite-dimensional analytic spaces in Hilbert spaces, using the setting of metric currents. In particular, we obtain the characterization of such currents as positive closed $(k,k)-$rectifiable currents and solve the boundary problem for holomorphic chains.
Let $Ω$ be a complex manifold, and let $X\subset Ω$ be an open submanifold whose closure $\bar X$ is a (not necessarily compact) submanifold with smooth boundary. Let $G$ be a complex Lie group, $Π$ be a differentiable principal $G$-bundle on $Ω$ and $J$ a formally integrable bundle almost complex structure on the restriction $\bar P:= Π|_{\bar X}$. We prove that, if the boundary of $\bar X$ is strictly pseudoconvex, $J$ extends to a holomorphic structure on the restriction of $Π$ to a neighborhood of $\bar X$ in $Ω$. This answers positively and generalizes a problem stated in the article "Bou…
This paper concerns the problem of extending the parameter domain of holomorphic motions to include isolated boundary points, punctures of the domains. Supposing that the parameter domain has an isolated boundary point $λ^*$, we explore the extension properties of the holomorphic motion to $λ^*$.
