Let $K$ be a field, $S$ a polynomial ring and $E$ an exterior algebra over $K$, both in a finite set of variables. We study rigidity properties of the graded Betti numbers of graded ideals in $S$ and $E$ when passing to their generic initial ideals. First, we prove that if the graded Betti numbers $β_{ii+k}^S(S/I)=β_{ii+k}^S(S/\Gin(I))$ for some $i>1$ and $k \geq 0$, then $β_{qq+k}^S(S/I)= β_{qq+k}^S(S/\Gin(I))$ for all $q \geq i$, where $I\subset S$ is a graded ideal. Second, we show that if $β_{ii+k}^E(E/I)= β_{ii+k}^E(E/\Gin(I))$ for some $i>1$ and $k \geq 0$, then $β_{qq+k}^E(E/I)= β_{qq+k}^E(E/\Gin(I))$ for all $q \geq 1$, where $I\subset E$ is a graded ideal. In addition, it will be shown that the graded Betti numbers $β_{ii+k}^R(R/I)= β_{ii+k}^R(R/\Gin(I))$ for all $i \geq 1$ if and only if $I_{< k >}$ and $I_{< k+1 >}$ have a linear resolution. Here $I_{< d >}$ is the ideal generated by all homogeneous elements in $I$ of degree $d$, and $R$ can be either the polynomial ring or the exterior algebra.
Let $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ and $I \subset R$ be a homogeneous ideal. In this article, we first obtain certain sufficient conditions for the subadditivity of $R/I$. As a consequence, we prove that if $I$ is generated by homogeneous complete intersection, then subadditivity holds for $R/I$. We then study a conjecture of Avramov, Conca and Iyengar on subadditivity, when $I$ is a monomial ideal with $R/I$ Koszul. We identify several classes of edge ideals of graphs $G$ such that the subadditivity holds for $R/I(G)$. We then study the strand connectivity of edge ideals and obtain severa…
A determinantal facet ideal (DFI) is an ideal $J_Δ$ generated by maximal minors of a generic matrix parametrized by an associated simplicial complex $Δ$. In this paper, we construct an explicit linear strand for the initial ideal with respect to any diagonal term order $<$ of an arbitrary DFI. In particular, we show that if $Δ$ has no \emph{1-nonfaces}, then the Betti numbers of the linear strand of $J_Δ$ and its initial ideal coincide. We apply this result to prove a conjecture of Ene, Herzog, and Hibi on Betti numbers of closed binomial edge ideals in the case that the associated graph has a…
We construct the first linear strand of the minimal free resolutions of edge ideals of $d$-partite $d$-uniform clutters. We show that the first linear strand is supported on a relative simplicial complex. In the case that the edge ideals of such clutters have linear resolutions, we give an explicit and surprisingly simple description of their minimal free resolutions, generalizing the known resolutions for edge ideals of Ferrers graphs and hypergraphs and co-letterplace ideals. As an application, we show that the Lyubeznik numbers that appear on the last column of the Lyubeznik table of the co…
In this work we introduce a new set of invariants associated to the linear strands of a minimal free resolution of a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded ideal $I\subseteq R=\Bbbk[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$. We also prove that these invariants satisfy some properties analogous to those of Lyubeznik numbers of local rings. In particular, they satisfy a consecutiveness property that we prove first for Lyubeznik numbers. For the case of squarefree monomial ideals we get more insight on the relation between Lyubeznik numbers and the linear strands of their associated Alexander dual ideals. Finally, we prove that Lyubeznik…
Let I(G) be the edge ideal associated to a simple graph G. We study the graded Betti numbers that appear in the linear strand of the minimal free resolution of I(G).
We consider two problems regarding vanishing patterns in the Betti table of edge ideals $I$ in polynomial algebra $S$. First, we show that the $j$-strand is connected if $j=3$ (for $j=2$ this is easy and known), and give examples where the $j$-strand is not connected for any $j>3$. Next, we apply our result on strand connectivity to establish the subadditivity conjecture for edge ideals, $t_{a+b}\leq t_a+t_b$, in case $b=2,3$ (the case $b=1$ is known). Here $t_i$ stands for the maximal shifts in the minimal free $S$-resolution of $S/I$
Let $X$ be an $(m\times n)$-matrix of indeterminates, and let $J$ be the ideal generated by a set $\mathcal{S}$ of maximal minors of $X$. We construct the linear strand of the resolution of $J$. This linear strand is determined by the clique complex of the $m$-clutter corresponding to the set $\mathcal{S}$. As a consequence one obtains explicit formulas for the graded Betti numbers $β_{i,i+m}(J)$ for all $i\geq 0$. We also determine all sets $\mathcal{S}$ for which $J$ has a linear resolution.
In this paper, we study ideals $I$ whose linear strand can be supported on a regular CW complex. We provide a sufficient condition for the linear strand of an arbitrary subideal of $I$ to remain supported on an easily described subcomplex. In particular, we prove that a certain class of rainbow monomial ideals always have linear strand supported on a regular CW complex, including any initial ideal of the ideal of maximal minors of a generic matrix. We also provide a sufficient condition for these ideals to have linear resolution, which is also an equivalence under mild assumptions. We then emp…
We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals have pure resolutions. Moreover, we introduce a new switching of graphs which does not change some algebraic invariants of graphs, and using this, we study the linear strand of the binomial edge ideals for some classes of graphs. Also, we pose a conjecture on the linear strand of such ideals for every graph.
We prove that every quasi-complete intersection ideal is obtained from a pair of nested complete intersection ideals by way of a flat base change. As a by-product we establish a rigidity statement for the minimal two-step Tate complex associated to an ideal $I$ in a local ring $R$. Furthermore, we define a minimal two-step complete Tate complex $T$ for each ideal $I$ in a local ring $R$; and prove a rigidity result for it. The complex $T$ is exact if and only if $I$ is a quasi-complete intersection ideal; and in this case, $T$ is the minimal complete resolution of $R/I$ by free $R$-modules.
Given an edge ideal of graph G, we show that if the first nonlinear strand in the resolution of $I_G$ is zero until homological stage $a_1$, then the next nonlinear strand in the resolution is zero until homological stage $2a_1$. Additionally, we define a sequence, called a \emph{jump sequence}, characterizing the highest degrees of the free resolution of the edge ideal of G via the lower edge of the Betti diagrams of $I_G$. These sequences strongly characterize topological properties of the underlying Stanley-Reisner complexes of edge ideals, and provide general conditions on construction of …
This Note provides first a generalization of the stabilization result of Eisenbud and Ulrich for the regularity of powers of a m-primary ideal to the case of ideals that are not generated in a single degree. We then partially extend our previous results expressing this stabilization degree in term of the regularity of a specific graded strand of the Rees ring : The natural extension of the statement holds at least if the stabilization index or the regularity is greater than the number of variables. In any case a precise comparison is given.
We show that the Koszul homology algebra of a quotient by the edge ideal of a forest is generated by the lowest linear strand. This provides a large class of Koszul algebras whose Koszul homology algebras satisfy this property. We obtain this result by constructing the minimal graded free resolution of a quotient by such an edge ideal via the so called iterated mapping cone construction and using the explicit bases of Koszul homology given by Herzog and Maleki. Using these methods we also recover a result of Roth and Van Tuyl on the graded Betti numbers of quotients of edge ideals of trees.
Let p be a prime ideal in a commutative noetherian ring R. It is proved that if an R-module M satisfies Tor^R_n(k(p),M) = 0 for some n \geq dim R_p, where k(p) is the residue field at p, then Tor^R_i(k(p),M) = 0 holds for all i \geq n. Similar rigidity results concerning Ext_R^*(k(p),M) are proved, and applications to the theory of homological dimensions are explored.
In this paper we derive geometric consequences from the presence of a long strand of linear syzygies in the minimal free resolution of a closed scheme in projective space whose homogeneous ideal is generated by quadrics. These consequences are given in terms of intersections with arbitrary linear subspaces. We use our results to bound homological invariants of some well-known projective varieties, to give a combinatorial characterization of quadratic monomial ideals with a long strand of linear syzygies, etc
Let $Γ$ be a rooted tree and let $t$ be a positive integer. We study algebraic invariants and properties of the path ideal generated by monomial corresponding to paths of length $(t-1)$ in $Γ$. In particular, we give a recursive formula to compute the graded Betti numbers, a general bound for the regularity, an explicit computation of the linear strand, and we characterize when this path ideal has a linear resolution.
We study Bass numbers of local cohomology modules supported on squarefree monomial ideals paying special attention to Lyubeznik numbers. We build a dictionary between local cohomology modules and minimal free resolutions that allow us to interpret Lyubeznik numbers as the obstruction to the acyclicity of the linear strands of the Alexander dual ideals. The methods we develop also help us to give a bound for the injective dimension of the local cohomology modules in terms of the dimension of the small support.
We establish a link between trace modules and rigidity in modules over Noetherian rings. Using the theory of trace ideals we make partial progress on a question of Dao, and on the Auslander-Reiten conjecture over Artinian Gorenstein rings.
We let S denote the ring of polynomial functions on the space of m x n matrices, and consider the action of the group GL = GL_m x GL_n via row and column operations on the matrix entries. For a GL-invariant ideal I in S we show that the linear strands of its minimal free resolution translate via the BGG correspondence to modules over the general linear Lie superalgebra gl(m|n). When I is the ideal generated by the GL-orbit of a highest weight vector, we give a conjectural description of the classes of these gl(m|n)-modules in the Grothendieck group, and prove that our prediction is correct for…
Inspired by work of Cartwright and Sturmfels, in a previous paper we introduced two classes of multigraded ideals named after them. These ideals are defined in terms of properties of their multigraded generic initial ideals. The goal of this paper is showing that three families of ideals that have recently attracted the attention of researchers are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals. More specifically, we prove that binomial edge ideals, multigraded homogenizations of linear spaces, and multiview ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals, hence recovering and extending recent results of Herzog-Hibi-Hrei…
In this paper we prove parts of a conjecture of Herzog giving lower bounds on the rank of the free modules appearing in the linear strand of a graded $k$-th syzygy module over the polynomial ring. If in addition the module is $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded we show that the conjecture holds in full generality. Furthermore, we give lower and upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of graded ideals with a linear resolution and a fixed number of generators.
We compute the linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the ideal generated by k x k sub-permanents of an n x n generic matrix and of the ideal generated by square-free monomials of degree k. The latter calculation gives the full minimal free resolution by work of Biagioli-Faridi-Rosas. Our motivation is to lay groundwork for the use of commutative algebra in algebraic complexity theory. We also compute several Hilbert functions relevant for complexity theory.
A set of polynomials G in a polynomial ring S over a field is said to be a universal Groebner basis, if G is a Groebner basis with respect to every term order on S. Twenty years ago Bernstein, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky proved that the set of the maximal minors of a matrix X of variables is a universal Groebner basis. Boocher recently proved that any initial ideal of the ideal of maximal minors of X has a linear resolution. In this paper we give a quick proof of the results mentioned above. Our proof is based on a specialization argument. Then we show that similar statements hold in a more g…
Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and consider exterior algebras of finite dimensional K-vector spaces. In this short paper we exhibit principal quadric ideals in a family whose Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is unbounded. This negatively answers the analogue of Stillman's Question for exterior algebras posed by I. Peeva. We show that these examples are dual to modules over polynomial rings that yield counterexamples to a conjecture of J. Herzog on the Betti numbers in the linear strand of syzygy modules.
For a given clutter $\mathcal{C}$, let $I:=I ( \bar{\mathcal{C}} )$ be the circuit ideal in the polynomial ring $S$. In this paper, we show that the Betti numbers of $I$ and $I + ( \textbf{x}_F )$ are the same in their non-linear strands, for some suitable $F \in \mathcal{C}$. Motivated by this result, we introduce a class of clutters that we call chordal. This class, is a natural extension of the class of chordal graphs and has the nice property that the circuit ideal associated to any member of this class has a linear resolution over any field. Finally we compare this class with all known fa…
Many hard combinatorial problems can be modeled by a system of polynomial equations. N. Alon coined the term polynomial method to describe the use of nonlinear polynomials when solving combinatorial problems. We continue the exploration of the polynomial method and show how the algorithmic theory of polynomial ideals can be used to detect k-colorability, unique Hamiltonicity, and automorphism rigidity of graphs. Our techniques are diverse and involve Nullstellensatz certificates, linear algebra over finite fields, Groebner bases, toric algebra, convex programming, and real algebraic geometry.
Boij-Söderberg theory shows that the Betti table of a graded module can be written as a liner combination of pure diagrams with integer coefficients. Using Ferrers hypergraphs and simplicial polytopes, we provide interpretations of these coefficients for ideals with a d-linear resolution, their quotient rings, and for Gorenstein rings whose resolution has essentially at most two linear strands. We also establish a structural result on the decomposition in the case of quasi-Gorenstein modules.
We study the irreducibility of resonance varieties of graded rings over an exterior algebra E with particular attention to Orlik-Solomon algebras. We prove that for a stable monomial ideal in E the first resonance variety is irreducible. If J is an Orlik- Solomon ideal of an essential central hyperplane arrangement, then we show that its first resonance variety is irreducible if and only if the subideal of J generated by all degree 2 elements has a 2-linear resolution. As an application we characterize those hyperplane arrangements of rank less than or equal to 3 where J is componentwise linea…
In the present paper, we consider upper bounds of higher linear syzygies i.e. graded Betti numbers in the first linear strand of the minimal free resolutions of projective varieties in arbitrary characteristic. For this purpose, we first remind `Partial Elimination Ideals (PEIs)' theory and introduce a new framework in which one can study the syzygies of embedded projective schemes well using PEIs theory and the reduction method via inner projections. Next we establish fundamental inequalities which govern the relations between the graded Betti numbers in the first linear strand of an algebrai…
In this short note we give an elementary description of the linear part of the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex $Δ$. Indeed, the differentials in the linear part are simply a compilation of restriction maps in the simplicial cohomology of induced subcomplexes of $Δ$. Along the way, we also show that if a monomial ideal has at least one generator of degree $2$, then the linear strand of its minimal free resolution can be written using only $\pm 1$ coefficients.
