It is proved that generalized excursion measures can be constructed via time change of Ito's Brownian excursion measure. A tightness-like condition on strings is introduced to prove a convergence theorem of generalized excursion measures. The convergence theorem is applied to obtain a conditional limit theorem, a kind of invariance principle where the limit is the Bessel meander.
A notion of convergence of excursion measures is introduced. It is proved that convergence of excursion measures implies convergence in law of the processes pieced together from excursions. This result is applied to obtain homogenization theorems of jumping-in extensions for positive self-similar Markov processes, for Walsh diffusions and for the Brownian motion on the Sierpiński gasket.
We give an overview of the recent asymptotic results on the geometry of excursion sets of stationary random fields. Namely, we cover a number of limit theorems of central type for the volume of excursions of stationary (quasi--, positively or negatively) associated random fields with stochastically continuous realizations for a fixed excursion level. This class includes in particular Gaussian, Poisson shot noise, certain infinitely divisible, $α$--stable and max--stable random fields satisfying some extra dependence conditions. Functional limit theorems (with the excursion level being an argum…
This paper studies the excursion set of a real stationary isotropic Gaussian random field above a fixed level. We show that the standardized Lipschitz-Killing curvatures of the intersection of the excursion set with a window converges in distribution to a normal distribution as the window grows to the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. Moreover a lower bound for the asymptotic variance is shown.
The Laplace transform of the $d$-dimensional distribution of Brownian excursion is expressed as the Laplace transform of the $(d+1)$-dimensional distribution of an auxiliary Markov process, started from a $σ$-finite measure and with the roles of arguments and times interchanged. A similar identity holds for the Laplace transform of a generalized meander, which is expressed as the Laplace transform of the same auxiliary Markov process, with a different initial law.
This paper considers the asymptotic behaviour of volumes of excursion sets of subordinated Gaussian random fields with (possibly) infinite variance. Actually, we consider integral functionals of such fields and obtain their limiting distribution using the Hermite expansion of the integrand. We consider the general non-stationary Gaussian random fields, including stationary and anisotropic special cases. The limiting random variables in our limit theorems have the form of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals. We illustrate most results with corresponding examples.
Our interest in this paper is to explore limit theorems for various geometric functionals of excursion sets of isotropic Gaussian random fields. In the past, limit theorems have been proven for various geometric functionals of excursion sets/sojourn times. Most recently a CLT for Euler-Poincaré characteristic of the excursions set of a Gaussian random field has been proven under appropriate conditions. In this paper, we shall obtain a central limit theorem for some global geometric functionals, called the Lipschitz-Killing curvatures of excursion sets of Gaussian random fields in an appropriat…
Invariance principles are obtained for a Markov process on a half-line with continuous paths on the interior. The domains of attraction of the two different types of self-similar processes are investigated. Our approach is to establish convergence of excursion point processes, which is based on Itô's excursion theory and a recent result on convergence of excursion measures by Fitzsimmons and the present author.
In recent years, considerable interest has been drawn by the analysis of geometric functionals for the excursion sets of random eigenfunctions on the unit sphere (spherical harmonics). In this paper, we extend those results to proper subsets of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, i.e., spherical caps, focussing in particular on the excursion area. Precisely, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the excursion area is dominated by the so-called second-order chaos component, and we exploit this result to establish a Quantitative Central Limit Theorem, in the high energy limit. These results generalize …
We derive a functional central limit theorem for the excursion of a random walk conditioned on sweeping a prescribed geometric area. We assume that the increments of the random walk are integer-valued, centered, with a third moment equal to zero and a finite fourth moment. This result complements the work of \citep{DKW13} where local central limit theorems are provided for the geometric area of the excursion of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments. Our result turns out to be a key tool to derive the scaling limit of the \emph{Interacting Partially-Directed Self-Avoiding Walk} at …
We consider reflecting random walks on the nonnegative integers with drift of order 1/x at height x. We establish explicit asymptotics for various probabilities associated to such walks, including the distribution of the hitting time of 0 and first return time to 0, and the probability of being at a given height k at time n (uniformly in a large range of k.) In particular, for drift of form -δ/2x + o(1/x) with δ> -1, we show that the probability of a first return to 0 at time n is asymptotically n^{-c}ϕ(n), where c = (3+δ)/2 and ϕis a slowly varying function given explicitly in terms of the o(…
Let M be a compact smooth manifold of dimension n with or without boundary, and f : M $\rightarrow$ R be a smooth Gaussian random field. It is very natural to suppose that for a large positive real u, the random excursion set {f $\ge$ u} is mostly composed of a union of disjoint topological n-balls. Using the constructive part of (stratified) Morse theory we prove that in average, this intuition is true, and provide for large u the asymptotic of the expected number of such balls, and so of connected components of {f $\ge$ u}, see Theorem 1.2. We similarly show that in average, the high nodal s…
In this paper, we investigate some geometric functionals for band limited Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields in dimension 2. In particular, we focus on the area of excursion sets, providing its behavior in the high energy limit. Our result is based on Wiener chaos expansion for non linear transform of Gaussian fields and on an explicit derivation on the high-frequency limit of the covariance function of the field. As a simple corollary we establish also the Central Limit Theorem for the excursion area.
The multivariate central limit theorems (CLT) for the volumes of excursion sets of stationary quasi-associated random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$ are proved. Special attention is paid to Gaussian and shot noise fields. Formulae for the covariance matrix of the limiting distribution are provided. A statistical version of the CLT is considered as well. Some numerical results are also discussed.
This article presents a complete second order theory for a large class of geometric functionals on homogeneous Poisson input. In particular, the results don't require the existence of a radius of stabilisation. Hence they can be applied to geometric functionals of spatial shot-noise fields excursions such as volume, perimeter, or Euler characteristic (the method still applies to stabilising functionals). More generally, it must be checked that a local contribution to the functional is not strongly affected under a perturbation of the input far away. In this case the exact asymptotic variance i…
We investigate Lipschitz-Killing curvatures for excursion sets of random fields on $\mathbb R^2$ under small spatial-invariant random perturbations. An expansion formula for mean curvatures is derived when the magnitude of the perturbation vanishes, which recovers the Gaussian Kinematic Formula at the limit by contiguity of the model. We develop an asymptotic study of the perturbed excursion area behaviour that leads to a quantitative non-Gaussian limit theorem, in Wasserstein distance, for fixed small perturbations and growing domain. When letting both the perturbation vanish and the domain g…
As a generalization of scale functions of spectrally negative Lévy processes, we define scale functions of general standard processes with no positive jumps. For this purpose, we utilize excursion measures. Using our new scale functions we study Laplace transforms of hitting times, potential measures and duality.
We establish here a Quantitative Central Limit Theorem (in Wasserstein distance) for the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic of excursion sets of random spherical eigenfunctions in dimension 2. Our proof is based upon a decomposition of the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic into different Wiener-chaos components: we prove that its asymptotic behaviour is dominated by a single term, corresponding to the chaotic component of order two. As a consequence, we show how the asymptotic dependence on the threshold level $u$ is fully degenerate, i.e., the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic converges to a single random…
We provide integral formulae for the Laplace transform of the entrance law of the reflected excursions for symmetric Lévy processes in terms of their characteristic exponent. For subordinate Brownian motions and stable processes we express the density of the entrance law in terms of the generalized eigenfunctions for the semigroup of the process killed when exiting the positive half-line. We use the formulae to study in-depth properties of the density of the entrance law such as asymptotic behavior of its derivatives in time variable.
Let $X$ be a real Lévy process and let $\Xpos $ be the process conditioned to stay positive. We assume that $ 0 $ is regular for $(-\infty, 0)$ and $(0, +\infty) $ with respect to $X$. Using elementary excursion theory arguments, we provide a simple probabilistic description of the reversed paths of $X$ and $\Xpos $ at their first hitting time of $ (x, +\infty)$ and last passage time of $ (-\infty, x ] $, on a fixed time interval $[0, t]$, for a positive level $x$. From these reversion formulas, we derive an extension to general Lévy processes of Williams' decomposition theorems, Bismut's deco…

In this work, we study asymptotics of the genealogy of Galton--Watson processes conditioned on the total progeny. We consider a fixed, aperiodic and critical offspring distribution such that the rescaled Galton--Watson processes converges to a continuous-state branching process (CSBP) with a stable branching mechanism of index $α\in (1, 2]$. We code the genealogy by two different processes: the contour process and the height process that Le Gall and Le Jan recently introduced \cite{LGLJ1, LGLJ1}. We show that the rescaled height process of the corresponding Galton--Watson family tree, with one…
Two fundamental theorems by Spitzer/Erickson and Kesten/Maller on the fluctuation type (positive divergence, negative divergence or oscillation) of a real-valued random walk $(S_{n})_{n\ge 0}$ with iid increments $X_{1},X_{2},\ldots$ and the existence of moments of various related quantities like the first passage into $[x,\infty)$ and the last exit time from $(-\infty,x]$ for arbitrary $x\in\mathbb{R}_{\geqslant}$ are studied in the Markov-modulated situation when the $X_{n}$ are governed by a positive recurrent Markov chain $M=(M_{n})_{n\ge 0}$ on a countable state space $\mathcal{S}$, thus …
We are interested in the genealogical structure of alleles for a Bienaymé-Galton-Watson branching process with neutral mutations (infinite alleles model), in the situation where the initial population is large and the mutation rate small. We shall establish that for an appropriate regime, the process of the sizes of the allelic sub-families converges in distribution to a certain continuous state branching process (i.e. a Jirina process) in discrete time. Itô's excursion theory and the Léevy-Itô decomposition of subordinators provide fundamental insights for the results.
In Section 1, we present a number of classical results concerning the Generalized Gamma Convolution (:GGC) variables, their Wiener-Gamma representations, and relation with the Dirichlet processes. To a GGC variable, one may associate a unique Thorin measure. Let $G$ a positive r.v. and $Γ_t(G)$ (resp. $Γ_t(1/G))$ the Generalized Gamma Convolution with Thorin measure $t$-times the law of $G$ (resp. the law of $1/G$). In Section 2, we compare the laws of $Γ_t(G)$ and $Γ_t(1/G)$.In Section 3, we present some old and some new examples of GGC variables, among which the lengths of excursions of Besse…
Researching elliptic analogues for equalities and formulas is a new trend in enumerative combinatorics which has followed the previous trend of studying $q$-analogues. Recently Schlosser proposed a lattice path model in the square lattice with a family of totally elliptic weight-functions including several complex parameters and discussed an elliptic extension of the binomial theorem. In the present paper, we introduce a family of discrete-time excursion processes on $\mathbb{Z}$ starting from the origin and returning to the origin in a given time duration $2T$ associated with Schlosser's elli…
In this paper we give a complete characterization of the scaling limit of the critical Interacting Partially Directed Self-Avoiding Walk (IPDSAW) introduced in Zwanzig and Lauritzen (1968). As the system size $L$ diverges, we prove that the set of occupied sites, rescaled horizontally by $L^{2/3}$ and vertically by $L^{1/3}$ converges in law for the Hausdorff distance towards a non trivial random set. This limiting set is built with a Brownian motion $B$ conditioned to come back at the origin at $a_1$ the time at which its geometric area reaches $1$. The modulus of $B$ up to $a_1$ gives the he…
Limit theorems for the volumes of excursion sets of weakly and strongly dependent heavy-tailed random fields are proved. Some generalizations to sojourn measures above moving levels and for cross-correlated scenarios are presented. Special attention is paid to Student and Fisher-Snedecor random fields. Some simulation results are also presented.
In this note, we recall main properties of generalized random fields and present a proof of the continuity theorem of Paul Lévy for generalized random fields in the space of tempered distributions. This theorem was first proved by Fernique (1968) in a more general setting. The aim of this note is to provide a self-contained proof that in particular avoids the abstract theory of nuclear spaces.
In a recent paper, Michalowicz et al. provide an extension of Isserlis theorem to the case of a Bernoulli location mixture of a Gaussian vector. We extend here this result to the case of any location mixture of Gaussian vector; we also provide an example of the Isserlis theorem for a "scale location" mixture of Gaussian, namely the d-dimensional generalized hyperbolic distribution.
We get central limit type theorems for the total number of edges in the generalized random graphs with random vertex weights under different moment conditions on distributions of the weights.
The generalized allocation scheme is studied. Its extension for coloured balls is defined. Some analogues of the Law of the Iterated Logarithm and the Strong Law of Large Numbers are obtained for the number of boxes containing fixed numbers of balls.
According to the generalized Polya theorem, the Gaussian distribution on the real line is characterized by the property of equidistribution of a monomial and a linear form of independent identically distributed random variables. We give a complete description of a-adic solenoids for which an analog of this theorem is true. The proof of the main theorem is reduced to solving some functional equation in the class of continuous positive definite functions on the character group of an a-adic solenoid
We study the distribution of several statistics of large non-crossing partitions. First, we prove the Gaussian limit theorem for the number of blocks of a given fixed size. In contrast to the properties of usual set partitions, we show that the number of blocks of different sizes are negatively correlated, even for large partitions. In addition, we show that the sizes of blocks in a given large non-crossing partition are distributed according to a geometric distribution and not Poisson, as in the case of usual set partitions. Next, we show that the size of the largest block concentrates at $\l…
We investigate a connection between generalized Fibonacci numbers and renewal theory for stochastic processes. Using Blackwell's renewal theorem we find an approximation to the generalized Fibonacci numbers. With the help of error estimates in the renewal theorem we figure out an explicit representation.
We find Feynman-Kac type representation theorems for generalized diffusions. To do this we need to establish existence, uniqueness and regularity results for equations with measure-valued coefficients.
We consider a natural model of inhomogeneous random graphs that extends the classical Erd\H os-Rényi graphs and shares a close connection with the multiplicative coalescence, as pointed out by Aldous [AOP 1997]. In this model, the vertices are assigned weights that govern their tendency to form edges. It is by looking at the asymptotic distributions of the masses (sum of the weights) of the connected components of these graphs that Aldous and Limic [EJP 1998] have identified the entrance boundary of the multiplicative coalescence, which is intimately related to the excursion lengths of certain…
