We show that the space of long knots in an euclidean space of dimension larger than three is a double loop space, proving a conjecture by Sinha. We construct also a double loop space structure on framed long knots, and show that the map forgetting the framing is not a double loop map in odd dimension. However there is always such a map in the reverse direction expressing the double loop space of framed long knots as a semidirect product. A similar compatible decomposition holds for the homotopy fiber of the inclusion of long knots into immersions. We show also via string topology that the space of closed knots in a sphere, suitably desuspended, admits an action of the little 2-discs operad in the category of spectra. A fundamental tool is the McClure-Smith cosimplicial machinery, that produces double loop spaces out of topological operads with multiplication.
Lambrechts, Turchin and Volić proved the Bousfield-Kan type rational homology spectral sequence associated to the $d$-th Kontsevich operad collapses at $E^2$-page if $d\geq 4$. The key of their proof is formality of the operad. In this paper, we simplify their proof using a model category of operads. As byproducts we obtain two new consequences. One is collapse of the spectral sequence in the case of $d=3$ (and the coefficients being rational numbers). The other says there is no non-trivial extension for the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the spectral sequence.
Budney recently constructed an operad that encodes splicing of knots. He further showed that the space of (long) knots is generated over this operad by the space of torus knots and hyperbolic knots, thus generalizing the satellite decomposition of knots from isotopy classes to the level of the space of knots. Infection by string links is a generalization of splicing from knots to links. We construct a colored operad that encodes string link infection. We prove that a certain subspace of the space of 2-component string links is generated over a suboperad of our operad by its subspace of prime l…
We identify the space of tangentially straightened long knots in R^m, for m greater than or equal to 4, as the double loops on the space of derived operad maps from the associative operad into a version of the little m-disk operad. This verifies a conjecture of Kontsevich, Lambrechts, and Turchin.
We show that the Kontsevich operad, as an operad with multiplication, provides a model for the Taylor tower of the functor defined by taking the homotopy fiber of the inclusion of embeddings of an interval in a cube to the corresponding space of immersions. In developing the Kontsevich operad, we find an operad structure on the simplicial model for the two-sphere, in the opposite category to finite sets. Applications of our result include using machinery of McClure-Smith to produce a little two-disk action on our knot spaces.
In the present work, we extract pairs of topological spaces from maps between coloured operads. We prove that those pairs are weakly equivalent to explicit algebras over the one dimensional Swiss-Cheese operad SC_{1}. Thereafter, we show that the pair formed by the space of long knots and the polynomial approximation of (k)-immerions from R^{d} to R^{n} is an SC_{d+1}-algebra assuming the Dwyer-Hess'conjecture.
A new topological operad is introduced, called the splicing operad. This operad acts on a broad class of spaces of self-embeddings N --> N where N is a manifold. The action of this operad on EC(j,M) (self embeddings R^j x M --> R^j x M with support in I^j x M) is an extension of the action of the operad of (j+1)-cubes on this space. Moreover the action of the splicing operad encodes Larry Siebenmann's splicing construction for knots in S^3 in the j=1, M=D^2 case. The space of long knots in R^3 (denoted K_{3,1}) was shown to be a free 2-cubes object with free generating subspace P, the subspace…
In this article we study the Poisson algebra structure on the homology of the totalization of a fibrant cosimplicial space associated with an operad with multiplication. This structure is given as the Browder operation induced by the action of little disks operad, which was found by McClure and Smith. We show that the Browder operation coincides with the Gerstenhaber bracket on the Hochschild homology, which appears as the E2-term of the homology spectral sequence constructed by Bousfield. In particular we consider a variant of the space of long knots in higher dimensional Euclidean space, and…
The operad of framed little discs is shown to be equivalent to a cyclic operad. This answers a conjecture of Salvatore in the affirmative, posed at the workshop `Knots and Operads in Roma,' at Universita di Roma ``La Sapienza'' in July of 2006.
We determine the rational homology of the space of long knots in R^d for $d\geq4$. Our main result is that the Vassiliev spectral sequence computing this rational homology collapses at the E^1 page. As a corollary we get that the homology of long knots (modulo immersions) is the Hochschild homology of the Poisson algebras operad with a bracket of degree d-1, which can be obtained as the homology of an explicit graph complex and is in theory completely computable. Our proof is a combination of a relative version of Kontsevich's formality of the little d-disks operad and of Sinha's cosimplicial …
We show that the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence which computes the rational homotopy groups of the space of long knots in ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d\ge 4$, collapses at the $E^2$ page. The main ingredients in the proof are Sinha's cosimplicial model for the space of long knots and a coformality result for the little balls operad.
We prove that if a pair of semi-cosimplicial spaces (X,Y) arise from a coloured operad then the semi-totalization sTot(Y) has the homotopy type of a relative double loop space and the pair (sTot(X),sTot(Y)) is weakly equivalent to an explicit algebra over the two dimensional Swiss-cheese operad.
We study high-dimensional analogues of spaces of long knots. These are spaces of compactly-supported embeddings (modulo immersions) of $\mathbb{R}^m$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$. We view the space of embeddings as the value of a certain functor at $\mathbb{R}^m$, and we apply manifold calculus to this functor. Our first result says that the Taylor tower of this functor can be expressed as the space of maps between infinitesimal bimodules over the little disks operad. We then show that the formality of the little disks operad has implications for the homological behavior of the Taylor tower. Our second…
We establish certain smash operations on spaces over operads which are general analogues of the Samelson product on single loop spaces, and obtain a conceptual description of the structure of the homotopy groups of spaces $Y$ over a symmetric $K(π,1)$ operad: $π_*Y$ is a module over the free algebraic symmetric operad generated by operations on homotopy groups induced by these smash operations. In particular the homotopy groups of double loop spaces is a module over the free algebraic symmetric operad generated by the conjugacy classes of Brunnian braids modulo the conjugation action of pure b…
We give an overview of how calculus of the embedding functor can be used for the study of long knots and summarize various results connecting the calculus approach to the rational homotopy type of spaces of long knots, collapse of the Vassiliev spectral sequence, Hochschild homology of the Poisson operad, finite type knot invariants, etc. Some open questions and conjectures of interest are given throughout.
The paper shows that under some conditions the totalization of a cosimplicial space obtained from a multiplicative operad is a double loop space of the space of derived morphisms from the associative operad to the operad itself.
We construct a generalization of the Day convolution tensor product of presheaves that works for certain double $\infty$-categories. Using this construction, we obtain an $\infty$-categorical version of the well-known description of (one-object) operads as associative algebras in symmetric sequences; more generally, we show that (enriched) $\infty$-operads with varying spaces of objects can be described as associative algebras in a double $\infty$-category of symmetric collections.
This paper gives a partial description of the homotopy type of K, the space of long knots in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. The primary result is the construction of a homotopy equivalence between K and the free little 2-cubes object over the space of prime knots. In proving the freeness result, a close correspondence is discovered between the Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition of knot complements and the little cubes action on K. Beyond studying long knots in 3-space, we show that for any compact manifold M the space of embeddings of R^n x M in R^n x M with support in I^n x M admits an actio…
We introduce BV-algebra structures on the homology of the space of framed long knots in $\mathbb{R}^n$ in two ways. The first one is given in a similar fashion to Chas-Sullivan's string topology. The second one is defined on the Hochschild homology associated with a cyclic, multiplicative operad of graded modules. The latter can be applied to Bousfield-Salvatore spectral sequence converging to the homology of the space of framed long knots. Conjecturally these two structures coincide with each other.
Let M be a smooth manifold and V a Euclidean space. Let Ebar(M,V) be the homotopy fiber of the map from Emb(M,V) to Imm(M,V). This paper is about the rational homology of Ebar(M,V). We study it by applying embedding calculus and orthogonal calculus to the bi-functor (M,V) |--> HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. Our main theorem states that if the dimension of V is more than twice the embedding dimension of M, the Taylor tower in the sense of orthogonal calculus (henceforward called ``the orthogonal tower'') of this functor splits as a product of its layers. Equivalently, the rational homology spectral sequence…
In this paper we show that via the configuration space integral construction a non-trivalent graph cocycle can also yield a non-zero cohomology class of the space of higher (and even) codimensional long knots. This simultaneously proves that the Browder operation induced by the operad action defined by R. Budney is not trivial.
The framed n-discs operad fD_n is studied as semidirect product of SO(n) and the little n-discs operad. Our equivariant recognition principle says that a grouplike space acted on by fD_n is equivalent to the n-fold loop space on a SO(n)-space. Examples of fD_2-spaces are nerves of ribbon braided monoidal categories. We compute the rational homology of fD_n. Koszul duality for semidirect product operads of chain complexes is defined and applied to compute the double loop space homology as BV-algebra.
Let G be a topological group. Then the based loopspace of G is an algebra over the cacti operad, while the double loopspace of the classifying space of G is an algebra over the framed little discs operad. This paper shows that these two algebras are equivalent, in the sense that they are weakly equivalent E-algebras, where E is an operad weakly equivalent to both framed little discs and cacti. We recover the equivalence between cacti and framed little discs, and Menichi's isomorphism between the BV-algebras obtained by taking the homology of the loopspace of G and of the double loopspace of BG…
We show that the map on components from the space of classical long knots to the n-th stage of its Goodwillie-Weiss embedding calculus tower is a map of monoids whose target is an abelian group and which is invariant under clasper surgery. We deduce that this map on components is a finite type-(n-1) knot invariant. We also compute the second page in total degree zero for the spectral sequence converging to the components of this tower as Z-modules of primitive chord diagrams, providing evidence for the conjecture that the tower is a universal finite-type invariant over the integers. Key to the…
In this paper, we discuss the crossing change operation along exchangeable double curves of a surface-knot diagram. We show that under certain condition, a finite sequence of Roseman moves preserves the property of those exchangeable double curves. As an application for this result, we also define a numerical invariant for a set of surface-knots called $du$-exchangeable set.
A knot semigroup is defined by A. Vernitski. A. Vernitski conjectured that the knot semigroup of the 2-bridge knot is isomorphic to an alternating sum semigroup. To support this conjecture, and as a first main result, we prove that the knot semigroup of the double twist knot is isomorphic to an alternating sum semigroup. Moreover, as a second main result, we construct a link invariant constructed by the Gelfand-Kiriliov dimension of algebra.
