An ordinary differential field $(F,d)$ of characteristic zero, a subgroup $H$ of affine group $ GL(n,C)\propto C^n$ with respect to its identical representation in $F^n$ and the following two fields of differential rational functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,...,x_n)$-column vector, $$C< x, d>^H=\{f^d< x> \in C< x, d> : f^d< hx+ h_0> = f^d< x> {for any} (h,h_0)\in H \},$$ $$C< x, d>^{(F^*,H)}=\{f^d< x> \in C< x, d> : f^{g^{-1}d}< hx+ h_0> = f^d< x> {for any}
g\in F^* {and} (h,h_0)\in H \}$$ are considered, where $C$ is the constant field of $(F,d)$ and $C< x, d>$ is the field of differential rational functions in $x_1,x_2,...,x_n$ over $C$. The field $C< x, d>^H$ ($C< x, d>^{(F^*,H)}$) is an important tool in the equivalence problem of paths(respect. curves) in Differential Geometry with respect to the motion group $H$. In this paper an pure algebraic approach is offered to describe these fields. The field $C< x, d>^{(F^*,H)}$ and its relation with $C< x, d>^H$ are investigated. It is shown also that $C< x, d>^H$ can be derived from some algebraic (without derivatives) invariants of $H$.

We construct explicitly a family of proper subgroups of the tame automorphism group of affine three-space (in any characteristic) which are generated by the affine subgroup and a non-affine tame automorphism. One important corollary is the titular result that settles negatively the open question (in characteristic zero) of whether the affine subgroup is a maximal subgroup of the tame automorphism group. We also prove that all groups of this family have the structure of an amalgamated free product of the affine group and a finite group over their intersection.
We prove that, in characteristic zero, closed subgroups of the polynomial automorphisms group containing the affine group contain the whole tame group.
We describe a family of rational affine surfaces S with huge groups of automorphisms in the following sense: the normal subgroup of Aut(S) generated by all its algebraic subgroups is not generated by any countable family of such subgroups, and the quotient of Aut(S) by this subgroup contains a free group over an uncountable set of generators.
An differential field $(F;\partial_1,...,\partial_m)$ of characteristic zero, a subgroup $H$ of affine group $ GL(n,C)\propto C^n$ with respect to its identical representation in $F^n$ and the following two fields of differential rational functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,...,x_n)$-column vector, $$C< x, \partial >^H=\{f^{\partial}< x> \in C< x, \partial> : f^{\partial}< hx+ h_0> = f^{\partial}< x> {whenever} (h,h_0)\in H \},$$ $$C< x, \partial>^{(GL^{\partial}(m,F),H)}=\{f^{\partial}< x> \in C< x, \partial> : f^{g^{-1}\partial}< hx+ h_0> = f^{\partial}< x> {whenever} g\in GL^{\partial}(m,F) {and} (h,h…
Let $X$ be an irreducible affine algebraic variety that is spherical with respect to an action of a connected reductive group $G$. In this paper we provide sufficient conditions, formulated in terms of weight combinatorics, for the existence of one-parameter additive actions on $X$ normalized by a Borel subgroup $B \subset G$. As an application, we prove that every $G$-stable prime divisor in $X$ can be connected with the open $G$-orbit by means of a suitable $B$-normalized one-parameter additive action.
We present a four-parameter family of ordinary differential systems in dimension three with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_4^{(1)}$. By obtaining its first integral, we can reduce this system to the second-order non-linear ordinary differential equations of Painlevé type. We also study this system restricted its parameters. Each system can be obtained by connecting some invariant divisors in the system of type $D_4^{(1)}$. Each system admits affine Weyl group symmetry of types $B_3^{(1)},G_2^{(1)},D_3^{(2)}$ and $A_2^{(2)}$, respectively. These symmetries, holomorphy conditions and inva…
A toroidal affine Nash group is the affine Nash group analogue of an anti-affine algebraic group. In this note, we prove analogues of Rosenlicht's structure and decomposition theorems: (1) Every affine Nash group $G$ has a smallest normal affine Nash subgroup $H$ such that $G/H$ is an almost linear affine Nash group, and this $H$ is toroidal. (2) If $G$ is a connected affine Nash group, then there exist a largest toroidal affine Nash subgroup $\ant{G}$ and a largest connected, normal, almost linear affine Nash subgroup $\aff{G}$. Moreover, we have $G=\ant{G}\aff{G}$, and $\ant{G}\cap \aff{G}$ …
For an affine spherical homogeneous space G/H of a connected semisimple algebraic group G, we consider the factorization morphism by the action on G/H of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. We prove that this morphism is equidimensional if and only if the weight semigroup of G/H satisfies some simple condition.
In this work we show that the homogeneous space of an affine algebraic group $G$ by a one-dimensional unipotent subgroup $H$ is affine if and only if the subgroup is not contained in any reductive subgroup of $G$.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $C/k$ be a smooth connected affine curve. Denote by $π_1(C)$ its algebraic fundamental group. The goal of this paper is to characterize a certain subset of closed normal subgroups $N$ of $π_1(C)$. In "Normal subgroups of fundamental groups of affine curves in positive characteristic" we proved the same result under the additional hypothesis that $k$ had countable cardinality.
Let $π_1(C)$ be the algebraic fundamental group of a smooth connected affine curve, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ of countable cardinality. Let $N$ be a normal (resp. characteristic) subgroup of $π_1(C)$. Under the hypothesis that the quotient $π_1(C)/N$ admits an infinitely generated Sylow $p$-subgroup, we prove that $N$ is indeed isomorphic to a normal (resp. characteristic) subgroup of a free profinite group of countable cardinality. As a consequence, every proper open subgroup of $N$ is a free profinite group of countable cardinality.
We find a three-parameter family of ordinary differential systems in dimension six with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_4^{(2)}$. This is the second example which gave higher order Painlevé type systems of type $D_{4}^{(2)}$. We show that we give its symmetry and holomorphy conditions. These symmetries, holomorphy conditions and invariant divisors are new.
A closed subgroup H of the affine, algebraic group G is called observable if G/H is a quasi-affine algebraic variety. In this paper we define the notion of an observable subgroup of the affine, algebraic monoid M. We prove that a subgroup H of G is observable in M if and only if H is closed in M and there are "enough" H-semiinvariant functions in K[M]. We show also that a closed, normal subgroup H of G (the unit group of M) is observable in M if and only if it is closed in M. In such a case there exists a determinant $χ: M \to K$ such that $H\subset ker(χ)$. As an application, we show that in …
Given a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ and a Borel subgroup $B \subseteq G$, we study $B$-normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine spherical $G$-varieties. We establish basic properties of such actions and their weights and discuss many examples exhibiting various features. We propose a construction of such actions that generalizes the well-known construction of normalized one-parameter additive group actions on affine toric varieties. Using this construction, for every affine horospherical $G$-variety $X$ we obtain a complete description of all $G$-normalized one-par…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a perfect field $k$. We study a certain normal reductive monoid $\overline M$ associated to a parabolic $k$-subgroup $P$ of $G$. The group of units of $\overline M$ is the Levi factor $M$ of $P$. We show that $\overline M$ is a retract of the affine closure of the quasi-affine variety $G/U(P)$. Fixing a parabolic $P^-$ opposite to $P$, we prove that the affine closure of $G/U(P)$ is a retract of the affine closure of the boundary degeneration $(G \times G)/(P \times_M P^-)$. Using idempotents, we relate $\overline M$ to the Vinberg semigroup of $G$. …
Let $\GroupG$ be a connected reductive algebraic group, $\GroupH \subsetneq \GroupG$ a reductive subgroup and $\GroupT \subset \GroupG$ a maximal torus. It is well known that if charactersitic of the ground field is zero, then the homogeneous space $\GroupG/\GroupH$ is a smooth affine variety, but never an affine space. The situation changes when one passes to double coset varieties $\dcosets{\GroupF}{\GroupG}{\GroupH}$. In this paper we consider the case of $\GroupG$ classical and $\GroupH$ connected spherical and prove that either the double coset variety $\dcosets{\GroupT}{\GroupG}{\GroupH}…
The group $\GL_2$ over a local field with (residue) characteristic $2$ possesses much more smooth supercuspidal $\ell$-adic representations, than over a local field of residue characteristic $> 2$. One way to construct these representations is via the theory of types of Bushnell-Kutzko. We construct many of them in the cohomology of certain extended affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties attached to $\GL_2$ and wildly ramified maximal tori in it. Then we compare our construction with the type-theoretic one. The corresponding extended affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties were introduced in a preceding ar…
Let L be k((ε)), where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field with q elements and εis an indeterminate, and let σbe the Frobenius automorphism. Let G be a split connected reductive group over the fixed field of σin L, and let I be the Iwahori subgroup of G(L) associated to a given Borel subgroup of G. Let W be the extended affine Weyl group of G. Given x in W and b in G(L), we have some subgroup of G(L) that acts on the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety X_x(b) = {gI in G(L)/I : g^{-1}bσ(g) is in IxI} and hence a representation of this subgroup on the Borel-Moore homology of the variety. We i…
Exploring Bass' Triangulability Problem on unipotent algebraic subgroups of the affine Cremona groups, we prove a triangulability criterion, the existence of nontriangulable connected solvable affine algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups, and stable triangulability of such subgroups; in particular, in the stable range we answer Bass' Triangulability Problem is the affirmative. To this end we prove a theorem on invariant subfields of $1$-extensions. We also obtain a general construction of all rationally triangulable subgroups of the Cremona groups and, as an application, classify rationall…
We determine the set of connected components of closed affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for hyperspecial maximal parahoric subgroups of unramified connected reductive groups. This extends the work by Viehmann for split reductive groups, and the work by Chen-Kisin-Viehmann on minuscule affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties.
We give an interpretation of the double affine Hecke algebra of Cherednik as the (suitably regularized) algebra of double cosets of a group G by a subgroup J, extending the well known interpretations of finite and affine Hecke algebras. In this interpretation, G consists of K-points of a split reductive group where K is a 2-dimensional local field such as Q_p((t)) or F_q((t_1))((t_2)), and J is a certain analog of the Iwahori subgroup.
In the present article we investigate ordinary and equivariant Rost motives. We provide an equivariant motivic decomposition of the variety X of full flags of a split semisimple algebraic group over a smooth base scheme, study torsion subgroup of the Chow group of twisted forms of X, define some equivariant Rost motives over a field and ordinary Rost motives over a general base scheme, and relate equivariant Rost motives with classifying spaces of some algebraic groups.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group and $H$ its reductive subgroup. Fix a Borel subgroup $B\subset G$ and a maximal torus $T\subset B$. The Cartan space $\a_{G,G/H}$ is, by definition, the subspace of $\Lie(T)^*$ generated by the weights of $B$-semiinvariant rational functions on $G/H$. We compute the spaces $\a_{G,G/H}$.
Given a toric affine algebraic variety $X$ and a collection of one-parameter unipotent subgroups $U_1,\ldots,U_s$ of $\mathop{\rm Aut}(X)$ which are normalized by the torus acting on $X$, we show that the group $G$ generated by $U_1,\ldots,U_s$ verifies the following alternative of Tits' type: either $G$ is a unipotent algebraic group, or it contains a non-abelian free subgroup. We deduce that if $G$ is $2$-transitive on a $G$-orbit in $X$, then $G$ contains a non-abelian free subgroup, and so, is of exponential growth.
An affine algebraic variety X of dimension at least 2 is called flexible if the subgroup SAut(X) in Aut(X) generated by the one-parameter unipotent subgroups acts m-transitively on reg(X) for any m $\ge$ 1. In the previous paper we proved that any nondegenerate toric affine variety X is flexible. In the present paper we show that one can find a subgroup of SAut(X) generated by a finite number of one-parameter unipotent subgroups which has the same transitivity property, provided the toric variety X is smooth in codimension 2. For X=$\mathbb{A}^n$ with n$\ge$2, three such subgroups suffice.
This paper is dedicated to the problem of infinite transitivity for algebraically generated automorphism groups of the affine plane. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition of infinite transitivity for a large family of subgroups generated by one-parameter additive groups.
We study stability conditions on the Calabi-Yau-$N$ categories associated to an affine type $A_n$ quiver which can be constructed from certain meromorphic quadratic differentials with zeroes of order $N-2$. We follow Ikeda's work to show that this moduli space of quadratic differentials is isomorphic to the space of stability conditions quotient by the spherical subgroup of the autoequivalence group. We show that the spherical subgroup is isomorphic to the braid group of affine type $A$ based on Khovanov-Seidel-Thomas method.
We give criteria for the Jacobian of a singular curve $X$ with at most ordinary $n$-point singularities to be anti-affine. In particular, for the case of curves with single ordinary double point we exhibit a relation with torsion divisors. If the geometric genus of the singular curve is atleast 3 and the normalization is non-hyperelliptic and non-bielliptic, then except for finitely many cases the Jacobian of $X$ is anti-affine. Furthermore, if the normalization is a general curve of genus atleast 3 then the Jacobian of $X$ is always anti-affine.
In this paper we show that an affine space is determined by the abstract group structure of its group of regular automorphisms in the category of connected affine varieties. To prove this we study commutative subgroups of the group of automorphisms of affine varieties.
Let G be a complex reductive group. A normal G-variety X is called spherical if a Borel subgroup of G has a dense orbit in X. Of particular interest are spherical varieties which are smooth and affine since they form local models for multiplicity free Hamiltonian K-manifolds, K a maximal compact subgroup of G. In this paper, we classify all smooth affine spherical varieties up to coverings, central tori, and C*-fibrations.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be an ind-group and let $\mathcal{U} \subseteq \mathcal{G}$ be a unipotent ind-subgroup. We prove that an abstract group automorphism $θ\colon \mathcal{G} \to \mathcal{G}$ maps $\mathcal{U}$ isomorphically onto a unipotent ind-subgroup of $\mathcal{G}$, provided that $θ$ fixes a closed torus $T \subseteq \mathcal{G}$, which normalizes $\mathcal{U}$ and the action of $T$ on $\mathcal{U}$ by conjugation fixes only the neutral element. As an application we generalize a result by Hanspeter Kraft and the author as follows: If an abstract group automorphism of the affine Cremona gr…
In this note, we show that the epimorphic subgroups of an algebraic group are exactly the pull-backs of the epimorphic subgroups of its affinization. We also obtain epimorphicity criteria for subgroups of affine algebraic groups, which generalize a result of Bien and Borel. Moreover, we extend the affinization theorem for algebraic groups to homogeneous spaces.
We provide explicit families of tame automorphisms of the complex affine three-space which degenerate to wild automorphisms. This shows that the tame subgroup of the group of polynomial automorphisms of $\C^3$ is not closed, when the latter is seen as an infinite dimensional algebraic group.tomorphism group of affine three-space
We prove that the Picard group of a connected affine algebraic group $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of the derived subgroup of the reductive algebraic group $G/{\mathscr R}_u(G)$, where ${\mathscr R}_u(G)$ is the unipotent radical of $G$.
We present a version of the Matsuki correspondence for the affine Grassmannian $Gr=G(C((t)))/G(C[[t]])$ of a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$. The main statement is an anti-isomorphism between the orbit posets of two subgroups of $G(C((t)))$ acting on $Gr$. The first is the polynomial loop group $LG_R$ of a real form $G_R$ of $G$; the second is the loop group $K(C((t)))$ of the complexification $K$ of a maximal compact subgroup $K_c$ of $G_R$. The orbit poset itself turns out to be simple to describe.
It is shown that the commutator subgroup of the fundamental group of a smooth affine curve over an uncountable algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic is a profinite free group of rank equal to the cardinality of $k$.
Let M be an irreducible normal algebraic monoid with unit group G. It is known that G admits a Rosenlicht decomposition, G=G_antG_aff, where G_ant is the maximal anti-affine subgroup of G, and G_aff the maximal normal connected affine subgroup of G. In this paper we show that this decomposition extends to a decomposition M=G_antM_aff, where M_aff is the affine submonoid M_aff=\bar{G_aff}. We then use this decomposition to calculate $\mathcal{O}(M)$ in terms of $\mathcal{O}(M_aff)$ and G_aff, G_ant\subset G. In particular, we determine when M is an anti-affine monoid, that is when $\mathcal{O}(…
Let $G$ be an affine group over a field of characteristic not two. A $G$-torsor is called isotropic if it admits reduction of structure to a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. This definition generalizes isotropy of affine groups and involutions of central simple algebras. When does $G$ admit anisotropic torsors? Building on work of J. Tits, we answer this question for simple groups. We also give an answer for connected and semisimple $G$ under certain restrictions on its root system.
We classify up to conjugacy the subgroups of certain types in the full, in the affine, and in the special affine Cremona groups. We prove that the normalizers of these subgroups are algebraic. As an application, we obtain new results in the Linearization Problem generalizing to disconnected groups Bia\lynicki-Birula's results of 1966-67. We prove "fusion theorems" for $n$-dimensional tori in the affine and in the special affine Cremona groups of rank $n$. In the final section we introduce and discuss the notions of Jordan decomposition and torsion primes for the Cremona groups.
Let $C$ be a smooth irreducible affine curve $C$ over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and let $π_1(C)$ be its fundamental group. We study various embedding problems for $π_1(C)$ and its subgroups.
Let $G$ be a semisimple affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. We describe all the maximal connected solvable subgroups of $G$, defined over $k$, up to conjugation by rational points of $G$.

We classify affine varieties with an action of a connected, reductive algebraic group such that the group is isomorphic to an open orbit in the variety. This is accomplished by associating a set of one-parameter subgroups of the group to the variety, characterizing such sets, and proving that sets of this type correspond to affine embeddings of the group. Applications of this classification to the existence of morphisms are then given.
Let $Π$ be the étale fundamental group of a smooth affine curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. We establish a criterion for profinite freeness of closed subgroups of $Π$. Roughly speaking, if a closed subgroup of $Π$ is "captured" between two normal subgroups, then it is free, provided it contains most of the open subgroups of index $p$. In the proof we establish a strong version of "almost $ω$-freeness" of $Π$ and then apply the Haran-Shapiro induction.
An affine variety $X$ of dimension $\ge 2$ is called {\em flexible} if its special automorphism group SAut$(X)$ acts transitively on the smooth locus $X_{reg}$ \cite{AKZ}. Recall that the special automorphism group SAut$(X)$ is the subgroup of the automorphism group Aut$(X)$ generated by all one-parameter unipotent subgroups \cite{AKZ}. Given a normal, flexible, affine variety $X$ and a closed subvariety $Y$ in $X$ of codimension at least 2, we show that the pointwise stabilizer subgroup of $Y$ in the group SAut$(X)$ acts infinitely transitively on the complement $X\backslash Y$, that is, $m$-…
