We obtain new estimates for a class of oscillatory integral operators with folding canonical relations satisfying a curvature condition. The main lower bounds showing sharpness are proved using Kakeya set constructions. As a special case of the upper bounds we deduce optimal $L^p(mathbb{S}^2)\to L^q(R \mathbb{S}^2)$ estimates for the Fourier extension operator on large spheres in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which are uniform in the radius $R$. Two appendices are included, one concerning an application to Lorentz space bounds for averaging operators along curves in $R^3$, and one on bilinear estimates.
We mostly survey results concerning the $L^2$ boundedness of oscillatory and Fourier integral operators. This article does not intend to give a broad overview; it mainly focusses on a few topics directly related to the work of the authors.
We prove sharp endpoint results for the Fourier restriction operator associated to nondegenerate curves in $\Bbb R^d$, $d\ge 3$, and related estimates for oscillatory integral operators. Moreover, for some larger classes of curves in $\Bbb R^d$ we obtain sharp uniform $L^p\to L^q$ bounds with respect to affine arclength measure, thereby resolving a problem of Drury and Marshall.
We consider non oscillatory functions and prove an everywhere Fourier Inversion Theorem for functions of very moderate decrease. The proofs rely on some ideas in nonstandard analysis.
Sharp L^2 estimates for oscillatory integral operators and Fourier integral operators associated with canonical relations having two-sided cusp or one-sided swallowtail singularities are obtained.
In this article we prove a sharp decay estimate for certain multilinear oscillatory integral operators of a form inspired by the general framework of Christ, Li, Tao, and Thiele [6]. A key purpose of this work is to determine when such estimates are stable under smooth perturbations of both the phase and corresponding projections, which are typically only assumed to be linear. The proof is accomplished by a novel decomposition which mixes features of Gabor or windowed Fourier bases with features of wavelet or Littlewood-Paley decompositions. This decomposition very nearly diagonalizes the prob…
We improve the exponent for the discrete Fourier restriction to the $n$ dimensional sphere, from $p=\frac{2(n+1)}{n-3}$ to $p=\frac{2n}{n-3}$, when $n\ge 4$.
We prove a maximal Fourier restriction theorem for the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ for any dimension $d\geq 3$ in a restricted range of exponents given by the Stein-Tomas theorem. The proof consists of a simple observation. When $d=3$ the range corresponds exactly to the full Stein-Tomas one, but is otherwise a proper subset when $d>3$. We also present an application regarding the Lebesgue points of functions in $\mathcal{F}(L^p)$ when $p$ is sufficiently close to 1.
In this paper, we first generalize the work of Bourgain and state a curvature condition for Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators, which we call Bourgain's condition. This condition is notably satisfied by the phase functions for the Fourier restriction problem and the Bochner-Riesz problem. We conjecture that for Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators satisfying Bourgain's condition, they satisfy the same $L^p$ bounds as in the Fourier Restriction Conjecture. To support our conjecture, we show that whenever Bourgain's condition fails, then the $L^{\infty} \to L^q$ boundedness a…
This paper establishes the optimal decay rate for scalar oscillatory integrals in $n$ variables which satisfy a nondegeneracy condition on the third derivatives. The estimates proved are stable under small linear perturbations, as encountered when computing the Fourier transform of surface-carried measures. The main idea of the proof is to construct a nonisotropic family of balls which locally capture the scales and directions in which cancellation occurs.
We control a broad class of singular (or "rough") Fourier multipliers by geometrically-defined maximal operators via general weighted $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ norm inequalities. The multipliers involved are related to those of Coifman--Rubio de Francia--Semmes, satisfying certain weak Marcinkiewicz-type conditions that permit highly oscillatory factors of the form $e^{i|ξ|^α}$ for both $α$ positive and negative. The maximal functions that arise are of some independent interest, involving fractional averages associated with tangential approach regions (related to those of Nagel and Stein), and more no…
The sharp range of $L^p$-estimates for the class of Hörmander-type oscillatory integral operators is established in all dimensions under a positive-definite assumption on the phase. This is achieved by generalising a recent approach of the first author for studying the Fourier extension operator, which utilises polynomial partitioning arguments.
We study the family of Fourier-Laplace transforms $$ F_{α,β}(z)= \operatorname*{F.p.} \int_{0}^{\infty} t^β\exp(\mathrm{i} t^α-\mathrm{i} z t)\:\mathrm{d} t, \quad \operatorname*{Im} z<0, $$ for $α>1$ and $β\in\mathbb{C}$, where Hadamard finite part is used to regularize the integral when $\operatorname*{Re} β\leq -1$. We prove that each $F_{α,β}$ has analytic continuation to the whole complex plane and determine its asymptotics along any line through the origin. We also apply our ideas to show that some of these functions provide concrete extremal examples for the Wiener-Ikehara theorem and a…
In this article, we develop a linear profile decomposition for the $L^p \to L^q$ adjoint Fourier restriction operator associated to the sphere, valid for exponent pairs $p<q$ for which this operator is bounded. Such theorems are new when $p \neq 2$. We apply these methods to prove new results regarding the existence of extremizers and the behavior of extremizing sequences for the spherical extension operator. Namely, assuming boundedness, extremizers exist if $q>\max\{p,\tfrac{d+2}d p'\}$, or if $q=\tfrac{d+2}d p'$ and the operator norm exceeds a certain constant times the operator norm of the…
The theory of Fourier integral operators is surveyed, with an emphasis on local smoothing estimates and their applications. After reviewing the classical background, we describe some recent work of the authors which established sharp local smoothing estimates for a natural class of Fourier integral operators. We also show how local smoothing estimates imply oscillatory integral estimates and obtain a maximal variant of an oscillatory integral estimate of Stein. Together with an oscillatory integral counterexample of Bourgain, this shows that our local smoothing estimates are sharp in odd spati…
This paper first shows that the Riemann localisation property holds for the Fourier-Laplace series partial sum for sufficiently smooth functions on the two-dimensional sphere, but does not hold for spheres of higher dimension. By Riemann localisation on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d}\subset\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, $d\ge2$, we mean that for a suitable subset $X$ of $\mathbb{L}_{p}(\mathbb{S}^{d})$, $1\le p\le \infty$, the $\mathbb{L}_{p}$-norm of the Fourier local convolution of $f\in X$ converges to zero as the degree goes to infinity. The Fourier local convolution of $f$ at $\boldsymbol{x}\in\mathbb{S}…
We improve the range for the discrete Fourier restriction to the four and five dimensional spheres. We rely on two new ingredients, incidence theory and Siegel's mass formula.
In this paper we establish sharp estimates (up to logarithmic losses) for the multilinear oscillatory integral operator studied by Phong, Stein, and Sturm and Carbery and Wright on any product $\prod_{j=1}^d L^{p_j}(\mathbb R)$ with each $p_j \geq 2$, expanding the known results for this operator well outside the previous range $\sum_{j=1}^d p_j^{-1} = d-1$. Our theorem assumes second-order nondegeneracy condition of Varchenko type, and as a corollary reproduces Varchenko's theorem and implies Fourier decay estimates for measures of smooth density on degenerate hypersurfaces in $\mathbb R^d$.
The heat kernel in the setting of classical Fourier-Bessel expansions is defined by an oscillatory series which cannot be computed explicitly. We prove qualitatively sharp estimates of this kernel. Our method relies on establishing a connection with a situation of expansions based on Jacobi polynomials and then transferring known sharp bounds for the related Jacobi heat kernel.
This is a continuation of the paper "Restriction theorem for Fourier-Dunkl transform I: Cone surface, J. Pseudo-Differ. Oper. Appl. 14(1), Paper No. 5 (2023)", where the authors introduced and studied the Fourier-Dunkl transform on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The main novelty of this paper is that we here prove Strichartz's restriction theorem for the Fourier-Dunkl transform for certain surfaces, namely, paraboloid, sphere, and hyperboloid and its generalisation to the family of orthonormal functions. Finally, as an application of these restriction theorems, we establish versions of …
In this note, a general formula is proved. It expresses the integral on the line of the product of a function $f$ and a periodic function $g$ in terms of the Fourier transform of $f$ and the Fourier coefficients of $g$. This allows the evaluation of some oscillatory integrals.
We prove an elementary multilinear identity for the Fourier extension operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$, generalising to higher dimensions the classical bilinear extension identity in the plane. In the particular case of the extension operator associated with the paraboloid, this provides a higher dimensional extension of a well-known identity of Ozawa and Tsutsumi for solutions to the free time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We conclude with a similar treatment of more general oscillatory integral operators whose phase functions collectively satisfy a natural multilinear transversality condition. T…
We show that, possibly after a compactification of spacetime, constant functions are local maximizers of the Tomas-Stein adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the cone and paraboloid in every dimension, and for the sphere in dimension up to 60. For the cone and paraboloid we work from the PDE framework, which enables the use of the Penrose and the Lens transformations, which map the conjectured optimal functions into constants.
We prove sparse bounds for pseudodifferential operators associated to Hörmander symbol classes. Our sparse bounds are sharp up to the endpoint and rely on a single scale analysis. As a consequence, we deduce a range of weighted estimates for pseudodifferential operators. The results naturally apply to the context of oscillatory Fourier multipliers, with applications to dispersive equations and oscillatory convolution kernels.
We will extend the Fourier restriction inequality for quadratic hypersurfaces obtained by Strichartz. We will consider the case where the hypersurface is a graph of a certain real polynomial which is a sum of one-dimensional monomials. It is essential to examine the decay of a one-dimensional oscillatory
The purpose of this paper is to characterize all the entire solutions of the homogeneous Helmholtz equation (solutions in $\mathbb{R}^d$) arising from the Fourier extension operator of distributions in Sobolev spaces of the sphere $H^α(\mathbb{S}^{d-1}),$ with $α\in \mathbb{R}$. We present two characterizations. The first one is written in terms of certain $L^2$-weighted norms involving real powers of the spherical Laplacian. The second one is in the spirit of the classical description of the Herglotz wave functions given by P. Hartman and C. Wilcox. For $α>0$ this characterization involves a …
In this note, we investigate $C^2$ differential images of the homogeneous self-similar measure associated with an IFS $\mathcal{I}=\{ρx+a_j\}_{j=1}^m$ satisfying the strong separation condition and a positive probability vector $\vec{p}$. It is shown that the Fourier transforms of such image measures have power decay for any contractive ratio $ρ\in (0, 1/m)$, any translation vector $\vec{a}=(a_1, \ldots, a_m)$ and probability vector $\vec{p}$, which extends a result of Kaufman on Bernoulli convolutions. Our proof relies on a key combinatorial lemma originated from Erdős, which is important in …
In every dimension $d \geq 2$, we give an explicit formula that expresses the values of any Schwartz function on $\mathbb{R}^d$ only in terms of its restrictions, and the restrictions of its Fourier transform, to all origin-centered spheres whose radius is the square root of an integer. We thus generalize an interpolation theorem by Radchenko and Viazovska to higher dimensions. We develop a general tool to translate Fourier uniqueness- and interpolation results for radial functions in higher dimensions, to corresponding results for non-radial functions in a fixed dimension. In dimensions great…
We prove that constant functions are the unique real-valued maximizers for all $L^2-L^{2n}$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{3,4,5,6,7\}$, where $n\geq 3$ is an integer. The proof uses tools from probability theory, Lie theory, functional analysis, and the theory of special functions. It also relies on general solutions of the underlying Euler-Lagrange equation being smooth, a fact of independent interest which we establish in a companion paper. We further show that complex-valued maximizers coincide with nonnegative maxi…
Let $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{P}'$ be $3$-dimensional convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $S \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ be a non-empty intersection of an open set with a sphere. As a consequence of a somewhat more general result it is proved that $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{P}'$ coincide up to translation and/or reflection in a point if $|\int_{\mathcal{P}} e^{-i\mathbf{s}\cdot\mathbf{x}} \,\mathbf{dx}| = |\int_{\mathcal{P}'} e^{-i\mathbf{s}\cdot\mathbf{x}} \,\mathbf{dx}|$ for all $\mathbf{s} \in S$. This can be applied to the field of crystallography regarding the question whether a nanopar…
We propose a new method of estimating oscillatory integrals, which we call a stationary set method. We use it to obtain the sharp convergence exponents of Tarry's problems in dimension two for every degree $k\ge 2$. As a consequence, we obtain sharp Fourier extension estimates for a family of monomial surfaces.
We explore the extent to which the Fourier transform of an $L^p$ density supported on the sphere in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can have large mass on affine subspaces, placing particular emphasis on lines and hyperplanes. This involves establishing bounds on quantities of the form $X(|\widehat{gdσ}|^2)$ and $\mathcal{R}(|\widehat{gdσ}|^2)$, where $X$ and $\mathcal{R}$ denote the X-ray and Radon transforms respectively; here $dσ$ denotes Lebesgue measure on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, and $g\in L^p(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})$. We also identify some conjectural bounds of this type that sit between the classi…
Sharp asymptotic for norms of Fourier projections on two-point homogeneous manifolds (the real sphere, the real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces and the Cayley elliptic plain) are established. These results extend sharp asymptotic estimates found by Fejer on the circle (in 1910) and then by Gronwall on the two-dimensional sphere (in 1914). As an application of these results we give solution of the problem of Kolmogorov on sharp asymptotic for the rate of convergence of Fourier sums on a wide range of sets of multiplier operators.
We obtain new Fourier interpolation and -uniqueness results in all dimensions, extending methods and results by the first author and M. Sousa, and by the second author. We show that the only Schwartz function which, together with its Fourier transform, vanishes on surfaces close to the origin-centered spheres whose radius are square roots of integers, is the zero function. In the radial case, these surfaces are spheres with perturbed radii, while in the non-radial case, they can be graphs of continuous functions over the sphere. As an application, we translate our perturbed Fourier uniqueness …
In this paper we compute the spherical Fourier expansions coefficients for the restriction of the generalised Wendland functions from $d-$dimensional Euclidean space to the (d-1)-dimensional unit sphere. The development required to derive these coefficients relies heavily upon known asymptotic results for hypergeometric functions and the final result shows that they can be expressed in closed form as a multiple of a certain $_{3}F_{2}$ hypergeometric function. Using the closed form expressions we are able to provide the precise asymptotic rates of decay for the spherical Fourier coefficients w…
We consider integrals of spherical harmonics with Fourier exponents on the sphere $S^n ,\, n \geq 1$. Such transforms arise in the framework of the theory of weighted Radon transforms and vector diffraction in electromagnetic fields theory. We give analytic formulas for these integrals, which are exact up to multiplicative constants. These constants depend on choice of basis on the sphere. In addition, we find these constants explicitly for the class of harmonics arising in the framework of the theory of weighted Radon transforms. We also suggest formulas for finding these constants for the ge…
We call a function "constructible" if it has a globally subanalytic domain and can be expressed as a sum of products of globally subanalytic functions and logarithms of positively-valued globally subanalytic functions. Our main theorem gives uniform bounds on the decay of parameterized families of oscillatory integrals with a constructible amplitude function and a globally subanalytic phase function, assuming that the amplitude function is integrable and that the phase function satisfies a certain natural condition called the hyperplane condition. As a simple application of this theorem, we al…
We define a scale of Hardy spaces $\mathcal{H}^{p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$, $p\in[1,\infty]$, that are invariant under suitable Fourier integral operators of order zero. This builds on work by Smith for $p=1$. We also introduce a notion of off-singularity decay for kernels on the cosphere bundle of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, and we combine this with wave packet transforms and tent spaces over the cosphere bundle to develop a full Hardy space theory for oscillatory integral operators. In the process we extend the known results about $L^{p}$-boundedness of Fourier integral operators, from local boundednes…
Let $K$ be a totally real number field of degree $n \geq 2$. The inverse different of $K$ gives rise to a lattice in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that the space of Schwartz Fourier eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{R}^n$ which vanish on the "component-wise square root" of this lattice, is infinite dimensional. The Fourier non-uniqueness set thus obtained is a discrete subset of the union of all spheres $\sqrt{m}S^{n-1}$ for integers $m \geq 0$ and, as $m \rightarrow \infty$, there are $\sim c_{K} m^{n-1}$ many points on the $m$-th sphere for some explicit constant $c_{K}$, proportional to the square root…
For a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation on the $R$-radius $d$-dimensional hypersphere, we compute the azimuthal Fourier coefficients in closed form in two and three dimensions. We also compute the Gegenbauer polynomial expansion for a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation in hyperspherical geometry in geodesic polar coordinates. From this expansion in three-dimensions, we derive an addition theorem for the azimuthal Fourier coefficients of a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation on the 3-sphere. Applications of our expansions are given, namely closed-form solutions to Poisso…
A locally compact group $G$ is said to be weakly amenable if the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ admits completely bounded approximative units. Consider the family of groups $G_n=SL(2,\Bbb R)\ltimes H_n$ where $n\ge 2$, $H_n$ is the $2n+1$ dimensional Heisenberg group and $SL(2,\Bbb R)$ acts via the irreducible representation of dimension $2n$ fixing the center of $H_n$. We show that these groups fail to be weakly amenable. Following an idea of Haagerup for the case $n=1$ one can reduce matters to the problem of obtaining nontrivial uniform bounds for a family of singular oscillatory integral operators…
Automorphic distributions for SL(2) arise as boundary values of modular forms and, in a more subtle manner, from Maass forms. In the case of modular forms of weight one or of Maass forms, the automorphic distributions have continuous first antiderivatives. We recall earlier results of one of us on the Holder continuity of these continuous functions and relate them to results of other authors; this involves a generalization of classical theorems on Fourier series by S. Bernstein and Hardy-Littlewood. We then show that the antiderivatives are non-differentiable at all irrational points, as well …
We derive bilateral estimates for the constants appearing in the Fourier transform restricted theorems on the Euclidean sphere for the ordinary and especially radial functions belonging to the Lebesgue-Riesz spaces as well as belonging to the Grand Lebesgue Spaces. We obtain an exact estimate for the norm of the restriction Fourier transform operator acting on the radial functions.
We deal with the restriction phenomenon for the Fourier transform. We prove that each of the restriction conjectures for the sphere, the paraboloid, the elliptic hyperboloid in $\mathbb{R}^n$ implies that for the cone in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We also prove a new restriction estimate for any surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ locally isometric to the plane and of finite type.
In this paper we study the boundedness of extension operators associated with spheres in vector spaces over finite fields. In even dimensions, we estimate the number of incidences between spheres and points in the translated set from a subset of spheres. As a result, we improve the Tomas-Stein exponents, our previous results. The analytic approach and the explicit formula for Fourier transform of the characteristic function on spheres play an important role to get good bounds for exponential sums.
