We will extend the Fourier restriction inequality for quadratic hypersurfaces obtained by Strichartz. We will consider the case where the hypersurface is a graph of a certain real polynomial which is a sum of one-dimensional monomials. It is essential to examine the decay of a one-dimensional oscillatory
It is known that under some transversality and curvature assumptions on the hypersurfaces involved, the bilinear restriction estimate holds true with better exponents than what would trivially follow from the corresponding linear estimates. This subject was extensively studied for conic and parabolic surfaces with sharp results proved by Wolff and Tao, and with later generalizations by Lee. In this paper we provide a unified theory for general hypersurfaces and clarify the role of curvature in this problem, by making statements in terms of the shape operators of the hypersurfaces involved.
This is the first of two articles in which we prove a sharp $L^p-L^2$ Fourier restriction theorem for a large class of smooth, finite type hypersurfaces in $\Bbb R^3$, which includes in particular all real-analytic hypersurfaces. The present file is a modified and extended version of an earlier file of the same title. Some changes and corrections had become necessary, in order to make sure that Part II is really compatible with Part I, and it is recommended to replace the earlier version of Part I by the new one.
Bennett, Carbery and Tao established nearly optimal $L^1$ trilinear restriction estimates in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ under transversality assumptions only. In this paper we show that the curvature improves the range of exponents, by establishing $L^p$ estimates, for any $p > \frac{2(n+4)}{3(n+2)}$ in the case of double-conic surfaces. The exponent $\frac{2(n+4)}{3(n+2)}$ is shown to be the universal threshold for the trilinear estimate.
In this article, we study the problem of obtaining Lebesgue space inequalities for the Fourier restriction operator associated to rectangular pieces of the paraboloid and perturbations thereof. We state a conjecture for the dependence of the operator norms in these inequalities on the sidelengths of the rectangles, prove that this conjecture follows from (a slight reformulation of the) restriction conjecture for elliptic hypersurfaces, and prove that, if valid, the conjecture is essentially sharp. Such questions arise naturally in the study of restriction inequalities for degenerate hypersurfa…
Quantum ergodicity theorem states that for quantum systems with ergodic classical flows, eigenstates are, in average, uniformly distributed on energy surfaces. We show that if N is a hypersurface in the position space satisfying a simple dynamical condition, the restrictions of eigenstates to N are also quantum ergodic.
We deal with the restriction phenomenon for the Fourier transform. We prove that each of the restriction conjectures for the sphere, the paraboloid, the elliptic hyperboloid in $\mathbb{R}^n$ implies that for the cone in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We also prove a new restriction estimate for any surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ locally isometric to the plane and of finite type.
The adjoint Fourier restriction inequality of Tomas and Stein states that the mapping $f\mapsto \widehat{fσ}$ is bounded from $\lt(S^2)$ to $L^4(\reals^3)$. We prove that there exist functions which extremize this inequality, and that any extremizing sequence of nonnegative functions has a subsequence which converges to an extremizer.
We establish the existence of extremizers for a Fourier restriction inequality on planar convex arcs without points with colinear tangents whose curvature satisfies a natural assumption. More generally, we prove that any extremizing sequence of nonnegative functions has a subsequence which converges to an extremizer.
This is a continuation of the paper "Restriction theorem for Fourier-Dunkl transform I: Cone surface, J. Pseudo-Differ. Oper. Appl. 14(1), Paper No. 5 (2023)", where the authors introduced and studied the Fourier-Dunkl transform on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The main novelty of this paper is that we here prove Strichartz's restriction theorem for the Fourier-Dunkl transform for certain surfaces, namely, paraboloid, sphere, and hyperboloid and its generalisation to the family of orthonormal functions. Finally, as an application of these restriction theorems, we establish versions of …
In this paper, we consider a discrete restriction associated with KdV equations. Some new Strichartz estimates are obtained. We also establish the local well-posedness for the periodic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with nonlinear term $ F(u)\p_x u$ provided $F\in C^5$ and the initial data $ϕ\in H^s$ with $s>1/2$.
Quantum ergodic restriction (QER) is the problem of finding conditions on a hypersurface $H$ so that restrictions $ϕ_j |_H$ to $H$ of $Δ$-eigenfunctions of Riemannian manifolds $(M, g)$ with ergodic geodesic flow are quantum ergodic on $H$. We prove two kinds of results: First (i) for any smooth hypersurface $H$, the Cauchy data $(ϕ_j|H, \partial ϕ_j|H)$ is quantum ergodic if the Dirichlet and Neumann data are weighted appropriately. Secondly (ii) we give conditions on $H$ so that the Dirichlet (or Neumann) data is individually quantum ergodic. The condition involves the almost nowhere equalit…
We give uniform upper and lower bounds for the L^2 norm of the restriction of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the three-dimensional standard flat torus to surfaces with non-vanishing curvature. We also present several related results concerning the nodal sets of eigenfunctions.
The adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the sphere $S^2$ states that if $f\in\lt(S^2,σ)$ then $\widehat{fσ}\in L^4(\reals^3)$. We prove that all critical points $f$ of the functional $\norm{\widehat{fσ}}_{L^4}/\norm{f}_{\lt}$ are smooth; that any complex-valued extremizer for the inequality is a nonnegative extremizer multiplied by the character $e^{ix\cdotξ}$ for some $ξ$; and that complex-valued extremizing sequences for the inequality are precompact modulo multiplication by characters.
We explore the connection between $k$-broad Fourier restriction estimates and sharp regularity $L^p-L^q$ local smoothing estimates for the solutions of the wave equation in $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}$ for all $n \geq 3$ via a Bourgain--Guth broad-narrow analysis. An interesting feature is that local smoothing estimates for $e^{i t \sqrt{-Δ}}$ are not invariant under Lorentz rescaling.
We show that, possibly after a compactification of spacetime, constant functions are local maximizers of the Tomas-Stein adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the cone and paraboloid in every dimension, and for the sphere in dimension up to 60. For the cone and paraboloid we work from the PDE framework, which enables the use of the Penrose and the Lens transformations, which map the conjectured optimal functions into constants.
We study the problem of estimating the $L^2$ norm of Laplace eigenfunctions on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ when restricted to a hypersurface $H$. We prove mass estimates for the restrictions of eigenfunctions $ϕ_h$, $(h^2 Δ- 1)ϕ_h = 0$, to $H$ in the region exterior to the coball bundle of $H$, on $h^δ$-scales ($0\leq δ< 2/3$). We use this estimate to obtain an $O(1)$ $L^2$-restriction bound for the Neumann data along $H.$ The estimate also applies to eigenfunctions of semiclassical Schrödinger operators.
In this paper, we establish a general discrete Fourier restriction theorem. As an application, we make some progress on the discrete Fourier restriction associated with KdV equation.
In this note we consider the adjoint restriction estimate for hypersurface under additional regularity assumption. We obtain the optimal $H^s$-$L^q$ estimate and its mixed norm generalization. As applications we prove some weighted Strichartz estimates for the propagator $e^{it(-Δ)^{α/2}}φ$, $α>0$.
We continue our research on Fourier restriction for hyperbolic surfaces, by studying local perturbations of the hyperbolic paraboloid $z=xy$ which are of the form $z=xy+h(y),$ where $h(y)$ is a smooth function which is flat at the origin. The case of perturbations of finite type had already been handled before, but the flat case imposes several new obstacles. By means of a decomposition into intervals on which $|h'''|$ is of a fixed size $λ,$ we can apply methods devised in preceding papers, but since we loose control on higher order derivatives of $h$ we are forced to rework the bilinear meth…
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact, smooth, Riemannian manifold and $\{ ϕ_h \}$ an $L^2$-normalized sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions with defect measure $μ$. Let $H$ be a smooth hypersurface. Our main result says that when $μ$ is $\textit{not}$ concentrated conormally to $H$, the eigenfunction restrictions to $H$ and the restrictions of their normal derivatives to $H$ have integrals converging to 0 as $h \to 0^+$.
We review some of the literature on intertwining wave operators, as far as it relates to Tosio Kato's stationary method based on the resolvent. Techniques from Fourier restriction and Wiener algebras are emphasized.
The Cauchy problem for the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation is shown to be locally well-posed in H^s(R^2) for all s>1/2 by using the Fourier restriction norm method and bilinear refinements of Strichartz type inequalities.
It is shown that if $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ is a Borel set of Hausdorff dimension $\dim A \in (3/2,5/2)$, then for a.e. $θ\in [0,2π)$ the projection $π_θ(A)$ of $A$ onto the 2-dimensional plane orthogonal to $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}(\cos θ, \sin θ, 1)$ satisfies $\dim π_θ(A) \geq \max\left\{\frac{4\dim A}{9} + \frac{5}{6},\frac{2\dim A+1}{3} \right\}$. This improves the bound of Oberlin and Oberlin, and of Orponen and Venieri, for $\dim A \in (3/2,5/2)$. More generally, a weaker lower bound is given for families of planes in $\mathbb{R}^3$ parametrised by curves in $S^2$ with nonvanishing geodes…
In this article, we consider the kinetic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation (KDNLS), which is a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a cubic derivative nonlinear term containing the Hilbert transformation. For the Cauchy problem both on the real line and on the circle, we apply the short-time Fourier restriction method to establish a priori estimate for small and smooth solutions in Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s>1/4$.
We seek to extend work by Christianson-Hassell-Toth \cite{CHT} on restrictions of Neumann data of Laplacian eigenfunctions to interior hypersurfaces to a general semiclassical setting. In the semiclassical regime the appropriate generalisation is to study the restrictions of the function $v=ν(x,hD)u$ where $ν(x,hD)$ is the operator defined by quantising the normal velocity observable. For the Laplacian $ν(x,hD)=\frac{1}{2}hD_ν$ where $ν$ is the normal to the hypersurface. We find that $||ν(x,hD)u||_{L^{2}(H)}\lesssim||u||_{L^{2}(M)}$ provided $u$ is an $O_{L^{2}}(h)$ quasimode of the semiclass…
This paper is dedicated to the proof of Strichartz estimates on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^d$ for the linear Schrödinger and wave equations involving the sublaplacian. The Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{H}^d$ is an example of a totally non-dispersive evolution equation: for this reason the classical approach that permits to obtain Strichartz estimates from dispersive estimates is not available. Our approach, inspired by the Fourier transform restriction method initiated by Tomas and Stein, is based on Fourier restriction theorems on $\mathbb{H}^d$, using the non-commutative Fourier tra…
We establish high energy $L^2$ estimates for the restriction of the free Green's function to hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application, we estimate the size of a logarithmic resonance free region for scattering by potentials of the form $V\otimes δ_Γ$, where $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a finite union of compact subsets of embedded hypersurfaces. In odd dimensions we prove a resonance expansion for solutions to the wave equation with such a potential.
In the past decade, much effort has gone into understanding maximizers for Fourier restriction and extension inequalities. Nearly all of the cases in which maximizers for inequalities involving the restriction or extension operator have been successfully identified can be seen as partial answers to the question in the title. In this survey, we focus on recent developments in sharp restriction theory relevant to this question. We present results in the algebraic case for spherical and hyperbolic extension inequalities. We also discuss the use of the Penrose transform leading to some negative an…
We study bilinear $L^2$ Fourier restriction estimates which are related to the 2d wave equation in the sense that we restrict to subsets of thickened null cones. In an earlier paper we studied the corresponding 3d problem, obtaining several refinements of the Klainerman-Machedon type estimates. The latter are bilinear generalizations of the $L^4$ estimate of Strichartz for the 3d wave equation. In 2d there is no $L^4$ estimate for solutions of the wave equation, but as we show here, one can nevertheless obtain $L^2$ bilinear estimates for thickened null cones, which can be viewed as analogues …
Let $\{e_j\}$ be an orthonormal basis of Laplace eigenfunctions of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. Let $H \subset M$ be a submanifold and let $\{ψ_k\}$ be an orthonormal basis of Laplace eigenfunctions of $H$ with the induced metric. We obtain joint asymptotics for the Fourier coefficients \[ \langle γ_H e_j, ψ_k \rangle_{L^2(H)} = \int_H e_j \overline ψ_k \, dV_H, \] of restrictions $γ_H e_j$ of $e_j$ to $H$. In particular, we obtain asymptotics for the sums of the norm-squares of the Fourier coefficients over the joint spectrum $\{(μ_k, λ_j)\}_{j,k - 0}^{\infty}$ of the (square roots …
