The purpose of this paper is to characterize all the entire solutions of the homogeneous Helmholtz equation (solutions in $\mathbb{R}^d$) arising from the Fourier extension operator of distributions in Sobolev spaces of the sphere $H^α(\mathbb{S}^{d-1}),$ with $α\in \mathbb{R}$. We present two characterizations. The first one is written in terms of certain $L^2$-weighted norms involving real powers of the spherical Laplacian. The second one is in the spirit of the classical description of the Herglotz wave functions given by P. Hartman and C. Wilcox. For $α>0$ this characterization involves a multivariable square function evaluated in a vector of entire solutions of the Helmholtz equation, while for $α<0$ it is written in terms of an spherical integral operator acting as a fractional integration operator. Finally, we also characterize all the solutions that are the Fourier extension operator of distributions in the sphere.
We prove embeddings of Sobolev and Hardy-Sobolev spaces into Besov spaces built upon certain mixed norms. This gives an improvment of the known embeddings into usual Besov spaces. Applying these results, we obtain Oberlin type estimates of Fourier transforms for functions in Sobolev spaces $W_1^1(\mathbb R^n).$
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
We study the problem of an appropriate choice of derivatives associated with discrete Fourier-Bessel expansions. We introduce a new so-called essential measure Fourier-Bessel setting, where the relevant derivative is simply the ordinary derivative. Then we investigate Riesz transforms and Sobolev spaces in this context. Our main results are $L^p$-boundedness of the Riesz transforms (even in a multi-dimensional situation) and an isomorphism between the Sobolev and Fourier-Bessel potential spaces. Moreover, throughout the paper we collect various comments concerning two other closely related Fou…
We prove the existence of $L^2$ solutions to the Helmholtz equation $(-Δ- 1)u = f$ in ${\mathbb R}^n$ assuming the given data $f$ belongs to $L^{(2n+2)/(n+5)}({\mathbb R}^n)$ and satisfies the "Fredholm condition" that $\hat{f}$ vanishes on the unit sphere. This problem, and similar results for the perturbed Helmholtz equation $(-Δ-1)u = -Vu + f$, are connected to the Limiting Absorption Principle for Schrödinger operators. The same techniques are then used to prove that a wide range of $L^p \mapsto L^q$ bounds for Bochner-Riesz multipliers are improved if one considers their action on the clo…
We investigate Fourier multipliers with smooth symbols defined over locally compact Hausdorff groups. Our main results in this paper establish new Hörmander-Mikhlin criteria for spectral and non-spectral multipliers. The key novelties which shape our approach are three. First, we control a broad class of Fourier multipliers by certain maximal operators in noncommutative $L_p$ spaces. This general principle ---exploited in Euclidean harmonic analysis during the last 40 years--- is of independent interest and might admit further applications. Second, we replace the formerly used cocycle dimensio…
Let $p\geq 1$, $\ell\in \NN$, $α,β>-1$ and $\varpi=(ω_0,ω_1, \dots, ω_{\ell-1})\in \RR^{\ell}$. Given a suitable function $f$, we define the discrete-continuous Jacobi-Sobolev norm of $f$ as: $$ \normSp{f}:= \left(\sum_{k=0}^{\ell-1} \left|f^{(k)}(ω_{k})\right|^{p} + \int_{-1}^{1} \left|f^{(\ell)}(x)\right|^{p} d\Jm(x)\right)^{\frac{1}{p}}, $$ where $ d\Jm(x)=(1-x)^α (1+x)^βdx$. Obviously, $\normSp[2]{\cdot}= \sqrt{\IpS{\cdot}{\cdot}}$, where $\IpS{\cdot}{\cdot}$ is the inner product. $$ \IpS{f}{g}:= \sum_{k=0}^{\ell-1} f^{(k)}(ω_{k}) \, g^{(k)}(ω_{k}) + \int_{-1}^{1} f^{(\ell)}(x) \,g^{(\ell)…
We establish sharp $L^2$-Sobolev estimates for classes of pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols whose non-pseudodifferential (Fourier integral operator) parts exhibit two-sided fold singularities. The operators considered include both singular integral operators along curves in $R^2$ with simple inflection points and normal operators arising in linearized seismic imaging in the presence of fold caustics.
By using, among other things, the Fourier analysis techniques on hyperbolic and symmetric spaces, we establish the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequalities for higher order derivatives on half spaces. The proof relies on a Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality on hyperbolic spaces which is of its independent interest. We also give an alternative proof of Benguria, Frank and Loss' work concerning the sharp constant in the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality in the three dimensional upper half space. Finally, we show the sharp constant in the Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality for bi-Laplacian in the upper half…
We exhibit three classes of compactly supported functions which provide reproducing kernels for the Sobolev spaces $H^δ(\R^d)$ of arbitrary order $\,δ>d/2.\,$ Our method of construction is based on a new class of oscillatory integral transforms that incorporate radial Fourier transforms and Hankel transforms.
The embedding relations between Besov-Triebel-Sobolev spaces and modulation spaces are determined explicitly. We extend the results of Sugimoto[2007]; Wang[2007] and Kobayashi[2011] to the most general cases. And we give the sharp embedding between Fourier $L^{p}$ spaces and modulation spaces.
We consider certain Littlewood-Paley operators and prove characterization of some function spaces in terms of those operators. When treating weighted Lebesgue spaces, a generalization to weighted spaces will be made for Hörmander's theorem on the invertibility of homogeneous Fourier multipliers. Also, applications to the theory of Sobolev spaces will be given.
This paper continues the program initiated in the works by the authors [60], [61] and [62] and by the authors with Li [51] and [52] to establish higher order Poincaré-Sobolev, Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya, Adams and Hardy-Adams inequalities on real hyperbolic spaces using the method of Helgason-Fourier analysis on the hyperbolic spaces. The aim of this paper is to establish such inequalities on the Siegel domains and complex hyperbolic spaces. Firstly, we prove a factorization theorem for the operators on the complex hyperbolic space which is closely related to Geller' operator, as well as the CR inva…
We prove a characterization of the Sobolev spaces $H^α$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$, where the smoothness index $α$ is any positive real number and $d\geq 2$. This characterization does not use differentiation and it is given in terms of $([α/2]+1)$-multidimensional square functions $S_α$. For $[α/2]=0,$ a function $f\in L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ belongs to $H^α(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ if and only if $S_α(f)\in L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$. If $n=[α/2]>0$, the membership of $f$ is equivalent to the existence of $g_1,\cdots,g_n$ in $L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$ such that $S_α(f,g_1,\ldots,g_n)\in L^2(\ma…
The purpose of this paper is to characterize all embeddings for versions of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces where the underlying Lebesgue space metric is replaced by a Lorentz space metric. We include two appendices, one on the relation between classes of endpoint Mikhlin-Hörmander type Fourier multipliers, and one on the constant in the triangle inequality for the spaces $L^{p,r} $ when $p<1$.
We study fractional variants of the quasi-norms introduced by Brezis, Van Schaftingen, and Yung in the study of the Sobolev space $\dot W^{1,p}$. The resulting spaces are identified as a special class of real interpolation spaces of Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces. We establish the equivalence between Fourier analytic definitions and definitions via difference operators acting on measurable functions. We prove various new results on embeddings and non-embeddings, and give applications to harmonic and caloric extensions. For suitable wavelet bases we obtain a characterization of the approximation …
