Let $G$ be a group of permutations acting on an $n$-vertex set $V$, and $X$ and $Y$ be two simple graphs on $V$. We say that $X$ and $Y$ are $G$-isomorphic if $Y$ belongs to the orbit of $X$ under the action of $G$. One can naturally generalize the reconstruction problems so that when $G$ is $S_n$, the symmetric group, we have the usual reconstruction problems. In this paper, we study $G$-edge reconstructibility of graphs. We prove some old and new results on edge reconstruction and reconstruction from end vertex deleted subgraphs.
The reconstruction problem for permutations on $n$ elements from their erroneous patterns which are distorted by transpositions is presented in this paper. It is shown that for any $n \geq 3$ an unknown permutation is uniquely reconstructible from 4 distinct permutations at transposition distance at most one from the unknown permutation. The {\it transposition distance} between two permutations is defined as the least number of transpositions needed to transform one into the other. The proposed approach is based on the investigation of structural properties of a corresponding Cayley graph. In …
A permutation graph is a graph that can be derived from a permutation, where the vertices correspond to letters of the permutation, and the edges represent inversions. We provide a construction to show that there are infinitely many connected $r$-regular permutation graphs for $r \geq 3$. We prove that all $3$-regular permutation graphs arise from a similar construction. Finally, we enumerate all $3$-regular permutation graphs on $n$ vertices.
We establish conditions for a permutation group generated by a single permutation of a prime power order to be an automorphism group of a graph or an edge-colored graph. This corrects and generalizes the results of the two papers on cyclic permutation groups published in 1978 and 1981 by S. P. Mohanty, M. R. Sridharan, and S. K. Shukla.
Let $X$ be a family of graphs and $X_n$ the set of $n$-vertex graphs in $X$. A graph $U^{(n)}$ containing all graphs from $X_n$ as induced subgraphs is called $n$-universal for $X$. Moreover, we say that $U^{(n)}$ is a proper $n$-universal graph for $X$ if it belongs to $X$. In the present paper, we construct a proper $n$-universal graph for the class of split permutation graphs. Our solution includes two ingredients: a proper universal 321-avoiding permutation and a bijection between 321-avoiding permutations and symmetric split permutation graphs. The $n$-universal split permutation graph co…
In prior work, Cho and Kim studied competition graphs arising from doubly partial orders. In this article, we consider a related problem where competition graphs are instead induced by permutations. We first show that this approach produces the same class of competition graphs as the doubly partial order. In addition, we observe that the $123$ and $132$ patterns in a permutation induce the edges in the associated competition graph. We classify the competition graphs arising from $132$-avoiding permutations and show that those graphs must avoid an induced path graph of length 3. Finally, we con…
We define a statistic on the graph of commutation classes of a permutation of the symmetric group which is used to show that these graphs are equipped with a ranked poset structure, with a minimum and maximum. This characterization also allows us to compute the diameter of the commutation graph for any permutation, from which the results for the longest permutation and for fully commutative permutations are recovered.
We strengthen and put in a broader perspective previous results of the first two authors on colliding permutations. The key to the present approach is a new non-asymptotic invariant for graphs.
We study the value of unique games as a graph-theoretic parameter. This is obtained by labeling edges with permutations. We describe the classical value of a game as well as give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an optimal assignment based on a generalisation of permutation graphs and graph bundles. In considering some special cases, we relate XOR games to EDGE BIPARTIZATION, and define an edge-labeling with permutations from Latin squares.
Permutation-partition pairs were introduced by Stahl in 1980. These pairs are generalizations of graphs and graphs on surfaces. They were used to solve some problems for orientable embeddings of graphs. In this paper, we introduce a particular type of permutation-partition pair, called permutation-bipartition pair, which can be seen as generalizations of signed graphs and signed graph embeddings. Some applications are given.
In this paper we characterize permutation groups that are automorphism groups of coloured graphs and digraphs and are abelian as abstract groups. This is done in terms of basic permutation group properties. Using Schur's classical terminology, what we provide is characterizations of the classes of 2-closed and $2*$-closed abelian permutation groups. This is the first characterization concerning these classes since they were defined.
We define the \emph{occurrence graph} $G_p(π$) of a pattern $p$ in a permutation $π$ as the graph with the occurrences of $p$ in $π$ as vertices and edges between the vertices if the occurrences differ by exactly one element. We then study properties of these graphs. The main theorem in this paper is that every \emph{hereditary property} of graphs gives rise to a \emph{permutation class}.
We introduce a new method for encoding permutations as weighted independent sets in a family of graphs we call cores. The encoding allows us to enumerate (1324, 2143)-, (1234, 1324, 2143)-, (1234, 1324, 1432, 3214)-avoiding permutations with respect to their number of "boundary points" and the size of the independent set in the graph they correspond to.
We consider well-quasi-order for classes of permutation graphs which omit both a path and a clique. Our principle result is that the class of permutation graphs omitting $P_5$ and a clique of any size is well-quasi-ordered. This is proved by giving a structural decomposition of the corresponding permutations. We also exhibit three infinite antichains to show that the classes of permutation graphs omitting $\{P_6,K_6\}$, $\{P_7,K_5\}$, and $\{P_8,K_4\}$ are not well-quasi-ordered.
The class of Parikh word representable graphs were recently introduced. In this work, we further develop its general theory beyond the binary alphabet. Our main result shows that this class is equivalent to the class of bipartite permutation graphs. Furthermore, we study certain graph theoretic properties of these graphs in terms of the arity of the representing word.
The graph of overlapping permutations is a directed graph that is an analogue to the De Bruijn graph. It consists of vertices that are permutations of length $n$ and edges that are permutations of length $n+1$ in which an edge $a_1\cdots a_{n+1}$ would connect the standardization of $a_1\cdots a_n$ to the standardization of $a_2\cdots a_{n+1}$. We examine properties of this graph to determine where directed cycles can exist, to count the number of directed $2$-cycles within the graph, and to enumerate the vertices that are contained within closed walks and directed cycles of more general lengt…
We show that there exist linear-time algorithms that compute the strong chromatic index and a maximum induced matching of tree-cographs when the decomposition tree is a part of the input. We also show that there exist efficient algorithms for the strong chromatic index of (bipartite) permutation graphs and of chordal bipartite graphs.
Two permutations of the vertices of a graph $G$ are called $G$-different if there exists an index $i$ such that $i$-th entry of the two permutations form an edge in $G$. We bound or determine the maximum size of a family of pairwise $G$-different permutations for various graphs $G$. We show that for all balanced bipartite graphs $G$ of order $n$ with minimum degree $n/2 - o(n)$, the maximum number of pairwise $G$-different permutations of the vertices of $G$ is $2^{(1-o(1))n}$. We also present examples of bipartite graphs $G$ with maximum degree $O(\log n)$ that have this property. We explore …
We uncover a connection between two seemingly unrelated notions: lettericity, from structural graph theory, and geometric griddability, from the world of permutation patterns. Both of these notions capture important structural properties of their respective classes of objects. We prove that these notions are equivalent in the sense that a permutation class is geometrically griddable if and only if the corresponding class of inversion graphs has bounded lettericity.
This paper introduces a new graph construction, the permutational power of a graph, whose adjacency matrix is obtained by the composition of a permutation matrix with the adjacency matrix of the graph. It is shown that this construction recovers the classical zig-zag product of graphs when the permutation is an involution, and it is in fact more general. We start by discussing necessary and sufficient conditions on the permutation and on the adjacency matrix of a graph to guarantee their composition to represent an adjacency matrix of a graph, then we focus our attention on the cases in which …
The class of bipartite permutation graphs enjoys many nice and important properties. In particular, this class is critically important in the study of clique- and rank-width of graphs, because it is one of the minimal hereditary classes of graphs of unbounded clique- and rank-width. It also contains a number of important subclasses, which are critical with respect to other parameters, such as graph lettericity or shrub-depth, and with respect to other notions, such as well-quasi-ordering or complexity of algorithmic problems. In the present paper we identify critical subclasses of bipartite pe…
In this paper, we bound the number of edges of a maximal permutation graph with n vertices. We propose a new method to compute the lower bound by splitting the set of labellings of the edges into six parts, considering one separate problem for each part, explicitly determining the cardinality of four parts and summing up the corresponding values. We finish with an upper bound of the number of edges of a maximal permutation graph.
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In this paper, we give a number of general, and specific enumerative results for POPs in permutations defined by bipartite graphs, substantially extending the list of known results in this direction. In particular, we completely characterize the Wilf-equivalence for patterns defined by the N-shape posets.
In the paper Graphical complexity of products of permutation groups, M. Grech, A. Jez, A. Kisielewicz have proved that the direct product of automorphism groups of edge-colored graphs is itself the automorphism groups of an edge-colored graph. In this paper, we study the direct product of two permutation groups such that at least one of them fails to be the automorphism group of an edge-colored graph. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the direct product to be the automorphism group of an edge-colored graph. The same problem is solved for the edge-colored digraphs.
The graph of overlapping permutations is defined in a way analogous to the De Bruijn graph on strings of symbols. That is, for every permutation $π= π_{1} π_{2} ... π_{n+1}$ there is a directed edge from the standardization of $π_{1} π_{2} ... π_{n}$ to the standardization of $π_{2} π_{3} ... π_{n+1}$. We give a formula for the number of cycles of length $d$ in the subgraph of overlapping 312-avoiding permutations. Using this we also give a refinement of the enumeration of 312-avoiding affine permutations and point out some open problems on this graph, which so far has been little studied.
We introduce a game on graphs. By a theorem of Zermelo, each instance of the game on a finite graph is determined. While the general decision problem on which player has a winning strategy in a given instance of the game is unsolved, we solve the decision problem for a specific class of finite graphs. This result is then applied to a permutation sorting game to prove the optimality of a proportional bound under which TWO has a winning strategy.
A graph $G(V,E)$ is a threshold graph if there exist non-negative reals $w_v, v \in V$ and $t$ such that for every $U \subseteq V$, $\sum_{v \in U} w_v\leq t$ if and only if $U$ is a stable set. The {\it threshold dimension} of a graph $G(V,E)$, denoted as $t(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that $E$ can be covered by $k$ threshold spanning subgraphs of $G$. A permutation graph is a graph that can be represented as the intersection graph of a family of line segments that connect two parallel lines in the Euclidean plane. In this paper we will show that if $G$ is a permutation graph then $…
A permutation graph is a cubic graph admitting a 1-factor M whose complement consists of two chordless cycles. Extending results of Ellingham and of Goldwasser and Zhang, we prove that if e is an edge of M such that every 4-cycle containing an edge of M contains e, then e is contained in a subdivision of the Petersen graph of a special type. In particular, if the graph is cyclically 5-edge-connected, then every edge of M is contained in such a subdivision. Our proof is based on a characterization of cographs in terms of twin vertices. We infer a linear lower bound on the number of Petersen sub…
A structure $\cal S$ is quasi-projective if for every structure $\cal T$, for every homomorphism $f : {\cal S} \rightarrow {\cal T}$ and every epimorphism $j: {\cal S}\rightarrow {\cal T}$ there is an endomorphism $ϕ$ of $\cal S$ such that $ϕ\circ j=f$. In this paper, we characterise the quasi-projective posets and lattices of arbitrary cardinalities, finite permutations, graphs and digraphs of arbitrary cardinalities with loops and without loops, finite hypergraphs, and finite point-line geometries.
A permutation graph $G_π$ is a simple graph with vertices corresponding to the elements of $π$ and an edge between $i$ and $j$ when $i$ and $j$ are inverted in $π$. A set of vertices $D$ is said to dominate a graph $G$ when every vertex in $G$ is either an element of $D$, or adjacent to an element of $D$. The domination number $γ(G)$ is defined as the cardinality of a minimum dominating set of $G$. A strong fixed point of a permutation $π$ of order $n$ is an element $k$ such that $π^{-1}(j)<π^{-1}(k)$ for all $j<k$, and $π^{-1}(i)>π^{-1}(k)$ for all $i>k$. In this article, we count the number …
The notion of a $p$-Riordan graph generalizes that of a Riordan graph, which, in turn, generalizes the notions of a Pascal graph and a Toeplitz graph. In this paper we introduce the notion of a $p$-Riordan word, and show how to encode $p$-Riordan graphs by $p$-Riordan words. For special important cases of Riordan graphs (the case $p=2$) and oriented Riordan graphs (the case $p=3$) we provide alternative encodings in terms of pattern-avoiding permutations and certain balanced words, respectively. As a bi-product of our studies, we provide an alternative proof of a known enumerative result on cl…
The (n,k)-arrangement graph A(n,k) is a graph with all the k-permutations of an n-element set as vertices where two k-permutations are adjacent if they agree in exactly k-1 positions. We introduce a cyclic decomposition for k-permutations and show that this gives rise to a very fine equitable partition of A(n,k). This equitable partition can be employed to compute the complete set of eigenvalues (of the adjacency matrix) of A(n,k). Consequently, we determine the eigenvalues of A(n,k) for small values of k. Finally, we show that any eigenvalue of the Johnson graph J(n,k) is an eigenvalue of A(n…
A permutation graph is a graph whose edges are given by inversions of a permutation. We study the Abelian sandpile model (ASM) on such graphs. We exhibit a bijection between recurrent configurations of the ASM on permutation graphs and the tiered trees introduced by Dugan et al. [10]. This bijection allows certain parameters of the recurrent configurations to be read on the corresponding tree. In particular, we show that the level of a recurrent configuration can be interpreted as the external activity of the corresponding tree, so that the bijection exhibited provides a new proof of a famous …
While the theory of labelled well-quasi-order has received significant attention in the graph setting, it has not yet been considered in the context of permutation patterns. We initiate this study here, and show how labelled well quasi order provides a lens through which to view and extend previous well-quasi-order results in the permutation patterns literature. Connections to the graph setting are emphasised throughout. In particular, we establish that a permutation class is labelled well-quasi-ordered if and only if its corresponding graph class is also labelled well-quasi-ordered.
For classes O of structures on finite linear orders (permutations, ordered graphs etc.) endowed with containment order cont (containment of permutations, subgraph relation etc.), we investigate restrictions on the function f(n) counting objects with size n in a lower ideal in (O, cont). We present a framework of edge P-colored complete graphs (C(P), cont) which includes many of these situations, and we prove for it two such restrictions (jumps in growth): f(n) is eventually constant or f(n) >= n for all n>0; f(n)<n^c for all n>0 for a constant c>0 or f(n) >= F_n for all n>0, F_n being the Fibo…
This paper analyzes relations between pattern avoidance of certain permutations and graphs on staircase grids and boundary grids, and proves two conjectures posed by Bean, Tannock, and Ulfarsson (2015). More specifically, this paper enumerates a certain family of staircase encodings and proves that the downcore graph, a certain graph established on the boundary grid, is pure if and only if the permutation corresponding to the boundary grid avoids the classical patterns 123 and 2143.
We study the symmetric function and polynomial combinatorial invariants of Hopf algebras of permutations, posets and graphs. We investigate their properties and the relations among them. In particular, we show that the chromatic symmetric function and many other invariants have a property we call positively $h$-alternating. This property of positively $h$-alternating leads to Schur positivity and $e$-positivity when applying the operator $\nabla$ at $q=1$. We conclude by showing that the invariants we consider can be expressed as scheduling problems.
The problem of finding graph structure of functions commuting with a given function in terms of their functional graphs is considered. Structure of functional graphs of commuting functions is described. The problem is reduced to describing graph homomorphisms of weakly connected components of functional graphs. Four subcases with finite sets are considered: permutations commuting with permutation, permutations commuting with a function, functions commuting with a permutation and functions commuting with a function. For finite sets the number of functions commuting with a given one and function…
In this paper, we present a method to obtain regular (or equitable) partitions of Cayley (di)graphs (that is, graphs, digraphs, or mixed graphs) of permutation groups on $n$ letters. We prove that every partition of the number $n$ gives rise to a regular partition of the Cayley graph. By using representation theory, we also obtain the complete spectra and the eigenspaces of the corresponding quotient (di)graphs. More precisely, we provide a method to find all the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of such (di)graphs, based on their irreducible representations. As examples, we apply this method to th…
There are several approaches to study occurrences of consecutive patterns in permutations such as the inclusion-exclusion method, the tree representations of permutations, the spectral approach and others. We propose yet another approach to study occurrences of consecutive patterns in permutations. The approach is based on considering the graph of patterns overlaps, which is a certain subgraph of the de Bruijn graph. While applying our approach, the notion of a uniquely $k$-determined permutation appears. We give two criteria for a permutation to be uniquely $k$-determined: one in terms of the…
Let $G$ be a graph $G$ whose largest independent set has size $m$. A permutation $π$ of $\{1, \ldots, m\}$ is an {\em independent set permutation} of $G$ if $$ a_{π(1)}(G) \leq a_{π(2)}(G) \leq \cdots \leq a_{π(m)}(G) $$ where $a_k(G)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ in $G$. In 1987 Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdős proved that every permutation of $\{1, \ldots, m\}$ is an independent set permutation of some graph with $α(G)=m$, i.e. with largest independent set having size $m$. They raised the question of determining, for each $m$, the smallest number $f(m)$ such that every permut…
A permutation of [n] induces a graph on [n] such that the edges of the graph correspond to inversion pairs of the permutation. This graph is connected if and only if the corresponding permutation is indecomposable. Let s(n,m) denote a permutation chosen uniformly at random among all permutations of [n] with exactly m inversions. Let p(n,m) be the common value for the probabilities that s(n,m) is indecomposable or the corresponding graph is connected. We prove that p(n,m) is non-decreasing with m by constructing a Markov process in which s(n,m+1) is obtained from s(n,m) by increasing one of the…
We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.
Monotone grid classes of permutations have proven very effective in helping to determine structural and enumerative properties of classical permutation pattern classes. Associated with grid class $\mathrm{Grid}(M)$ is a graph, $G(M)$, known as its "row-column" graph. We prove that the exponential growth rate of $\mathrm{Grid}(M)$ is equal to the square of the spectral radius of $G(M)$. Consequently, we utilize spectral graph theoretic results to characterise all slowly growing grid classes and to show that for every $γ\geqslant2+\sqrt{5}$ there is a grid class with growth rate arbitrarily clos…
In this paper, we construct a listing for the vertices of the augmentation graph of given size, and as a consequence, we obtain a Hamiltonian cycle for the square of the augmentation graph of given size. As applications, we have a Gray code for the $132$-$312$ avoiding permutations of given length such that two successive permutations differ by at most $2$ adjacent transpositions. Also we obtain Gray codes of strong distance $2$ for the $001$ avoiding ascent sequences and the $010$ avoiding ascent sequences of given length.
A permutation $\boldsymbol w$ gives rise to a graph $G_{\boldsymbol w}$; the vertices of $G_{\boldsymbol w}$ are the letters in the permutation and the edges of $G_{\boldsymbol w}$ are the inversions of $\boldsymbol w$. We find that the number of trees among permutation graphs with $n$ vertices is $2^{n-2}$ for $n\ge 2$. We then study $T_n$, a uniformly random tree from this set of trees. In particular, we study the number of vertices of a given degree in $T_n$, the maximum degree in $T_n$, the diameter of $T_n$, and the domination number of $T_n$. Denoting the number of degree-$k$ vertices in…
