While the theory of labelled well-quasi-order has received significant attention in the graph setting, it has not yet been considered in the context of permutation patterns. We initiate this study here, and show how labelled well quasi order provides a lens through which to view and extend previous well-quasi-order results in the permutation patterns literature. Connections to the graph setting are emphasised throughout. In particular, we establish that a permutation class is labelled well-quasi-ordered if and only if its corresponding graph class is also labelled well-quasi-ordered.
The notion of a $p$-Riordan graph generalizes that of a Riordan graph, which, in turn, generalizes the notions of a Pascal graph and a Toeplitz graph. In this paper we introduce the notion of a $p$-Riordan word, and show how to encode $p$-Riordan graphs by $p$-Riordan words. For special important cases of Riordan graphs (the case $p=2$) and oriented Riordan graphs (the case $p=3$) we provide alternative encodings in terms of pattern-avoiding permutations and certain balanced words, respectively. As a bi-product of our studies, we provide an alternative proof of a known enumerative result on cl…
We discuss a new notion of pattern avoidance motivated by the operad theory: pattern avoidance in planar labelled trees. It is a generalisation of various types of consecutive pattern avoidance studied before: consecutive patterns in words, permutations, coloured permutations etc. The notion of Wilf equivalence for patterns in permutations admits a straightforward generalisation for (sets of) tree patterns; we describe classes for trees with small numbers of leaves, and give several bijections between trees avoiding pattern sets from the same class. We also explain a few general results for tr…
Korpelainen, Lozin, and Razgon conjectured that a hereditary property of graphs which is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph order and defined by only finitely many minimal forbidden induced subgraphs is labelled well-quasi-ordered, a notion stronger than that of $n$-well-quasi-order introduced by Pouzet in the 1970s. We present a counterexample to this conjecture. In fact, we exhibit a hereditary property of graphs which is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph order and defined by finitely many minimal forbidden induced subgraphs yet is not $2$-well-quasi-ordered. This counterexa…
In this paper we study the degree sequence of the permutation graph $G_{π_n}$ associated with a sequence $π_n\in S_n$ of random permutations. Joint limiting distributions of the degrees are established using results from graph and permutation limit theories. In particular, for the uniform random permutation, the joint distribution of the degrees of the vertices labelled $\lceil nr_1 \rceil, \lceil nr_2 \rceil, \ldots, \lceil nr_s \rceil$ converges (after scaling by $n$) to independent random variables $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_s$, where $D_i\sim \text{Unif}(r_i, 1-r_i)$, for $r_i\in [0,1]$ and $i\i…
A permutation whose any prefix has no more descents than ascents is called a ballot permutation. In this paper, we present a decomposition of ballot permutations that enables us to construct a bijection between ballot permutations and odd order permutations, which proves a set-valued extension of a conjecture due to Spiro using the statistic of peak values. This bijection also preserves the neighbors of the largest letter in permutations and thus resolves a refinement of Spiro' s conjecture proposed by Wang and Zhang. Our decomposition can be extended to well-labelled positive paths, a class o…
We define a variation of Stirling permutations, called quasi-Stirling permutations, to be permutations on the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots, n,n\}$ that avoid the patterns 1212 and 2121. Their study is motivated by a known relationship between Stirling permutations and increasing ordered rooted labeled trees. We construct a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the set of ordered rooted labeled trees and investigate pattern avoidance for these permutations.
Stirling permutations were introduced by Gessel and Stanley, who used their enumeration by the number of descents to give a combinatorial interpretation of certain polynomials related to Stirling numbers. Quasi-Stirling permutations, which can be viewed as labeled noncrossing matchings, were introduced by Archer et al. as a natural extension of Stirling permutations. Janson's correspondence between Stirling permutations and labeled increasing plane trees extends to a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the same set of trees without the increasing restriction. Archer et al. posed …
The study of very large graphs is a prominent theme in modern-day mathematics. In this paper we develop a rigorous foundation for studying the space of finite labelled graphs and their limits. These limiting objects are naturally countable graphs, and the completed graph space $\mathscr{G}(V)$ is identified with the 2-adic integers as well as the Cantor set. The goal of this paper is to develop a model for differentiation on graph space in the spirit of the Newton-Leibnitz calculus. To this end, we first study the space of all finite labelled graphs and their limiting objects, and establish an…
We consider well-quasi-order for classes of permutation graphs which omit both a path and a clique. Our principle result is that the class of permutation graphs omitting $P_5$ and a clique of any size is well-quasi-ordered. This is proved by giving a structural decomposition of the corresponding permutations. We also exhibit three infinite antichains to show that the classes of permutation graphs omitting $\{P_6,K_6\}$, $\{P_7,K_5\}$, and $\{P_8,K_4\}$ are not well-quasi-ordered.
A set $S$ of permutations is forcing if for any sequence $\{Π_i\}_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ of permutations where the density $d(π,Π_i)$ converges to $\frac{1}{|π|!}$ for every permutation $π\in S$, it holds that $\{Π_i\}_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ is quasirandom. Graham asked whether there exists an integer $k$ such that the set of all permutations of order $k$ is forcing; this has been shown to be true for any $k\ge 4$. In particular, the set of all twenty-four permutations of order $4$ is forcing. We provide the first non-trivial lower bound on the size of a forcing set of permutations: every forcing se…
It is known that a sequence Pi_i of permutations is quasirandom if and only if the pattern density of every 4-point permutation in Pi_i converges to 1/24. We show that there is a set S of 4-point permutations such that the sum of the pattern densities of the permutations from S in the permutations Pi_i converges to |S|/24 if and only if the sequence is quasirandom. Moreover, we are able to completely characterize the sets S with this property. In particular, there are exactly ten such sets, the smallest of which has cardinality eight.
We prove that the enumerative polynomials of quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets with respect to the statistics of plateaux, descents and ascents are partial $γ$-positive, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Lin, Ma and Zhang. This is accomplished by proving the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials of certain ordered labeled trees, which are in bijection with quasi-Stirling permutations of multisets. As an application, we provide an alternative proof of the partial $γ$-positivity of the enumerative polynomials on Stirling permutations of multisets.
A structure $\cal S$ is quasi-projective if for every structure $\cal T$, for every homomorphism $f : {\cal S} \rightarrow {\cal T}$ and every epimorphism $j: {\cal S}\rightarrow {\cal T}$ there is an endomorphism $ϕ$ of $\cal S$ such that $ϕ\circ j=f$. In this paper, we characterise the quasi-projective posets and lattices of arbitrary cardinalities, finite permutations, graphs and digraphs of arbitrary cardinalities with loops and without loops, finite hypergraphs, and finite point-line geometries.
Algorithmic decidability is established for two order-theoretic properties of downward closed subsets defined by finitely many obstructions in two infinite posets. The properties under consideration are: (a) being atomic, i.e. not being decomposable as a union of two downward closed proper subsets, or, equivalently, satisfying the joint embedding property; and (b) being well quasi-ordered. The two posets are: (1) words over a finite alphabet under the consecutive subword ordering; and (2) finite permutations under the consecutive subpermutation ordering. Underpinning the four results are chara…
We derive a recurrence relation for the number of simple vertex-labelled bipartite graphs with given degrees of the vertices and use this result to obtain a new method for computing the growth function of the Artin monoid of type $A_{n-1}$ with respect to the simple elements (permutation braids) as generators. Instead of matrices of size $2^{n-1}\times 2^{n-1}$, we use matrices of size $p(n)\times p(n)$, where $p(n)$ is the number of partitions of $n$.
A permutation $π$ of a multiset is said to be a {\em quasi-Stirling } permutation if there does not exist four indices $i<j<k<\ell$ such that $π_i=π_k$ and $π_j=π_{\ell}$. Define $$ \overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t,u,v)=\sum_{π\in \overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}}t^{des(π)}u^{asc(π)}v^{plat(π)},$$ where $\overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}$ denotes the set of quasi-Stirling permutations on the multiset $\mathcal{M}$, and $asc(π)$ (resp. $des(π)$, $plat(π)$) denotes the number of ascents (resp. descents, plateaux) of $π$. Denote by $\mathcal{M}^σ$ the multiset $\{1^{σ_1}, 2^{σ_2}, \ldots, n^{σ…
We give combinatorial proofs of some enumeration formulas involving labelled threshold, quasi-threshold, loop-threshold and quasi-loop-threshold graphs. In each case we count by number of vertices and number of components. For threshold graphs, we also count by number of dominating vertices, and for loop-threshold graphs we count by number of looped dominating vertices. We also obtain an analog of the Frobenius formula (connecting Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind) in the context of labelled threshold graphs.
This paper builds on two covering Hopf algebras of the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions, with linear bases parameterized by compositions. One is the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra SSym of permutations, mapped onto QSym by taking descents of permutations. The other one is the recently introduced Hopf algebra RQSym of weak quasi-symmetric functions, mapped onto QSym by extracting compositions from weak compositions. We extend these two surjective Hopf algebra homomorphisms into a commutative diagram by introducing a Hopf algebra HSym, linearly spanned by signed permutations from…
This paper is a contribution to the study of hereditary classes of finite graphs. We classify these classes according to the number of prime structures they contain. We consider such classes that are \emph{minimal prime}: classes that contain infinitely many primes but every proper hereditary subclass contains only finitely many primes. We give a complete characterization of such classes. In fact, each one of these classes is a well quasi ordered age and there are uncountably many of them. Eleven of these ages remain well quasi ordered when labels in a well quasi ordering are added. Among the …
We introduce vincular pattern posets, then we consider in particular the quasi-consecutive pattern poset, which is defined by declaring $σ\leq τ$ whenever the permutation $τ$ contains an occurrence of the permutation $σ$ in which all the entries are adjacent in $τ$ except at most the first and the second. We investigate the Möbius function of the quasi-consecutive pattern poset and we completely determine it for those intervals $[σ,τ]$ such that $σ$ occurs precisely once in $τ$.
Descents in permutations or words are defined from the relative position of two consecutive letters. We investigate a statistic involving patterns of k consecutive letters, and show that it leads to Hopf algebras generalizing noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions.
We introduce a permutation analogue of the celebrated Szemeredi Regularity Lemma, and derive a number of consequences. This tool allows us to provide a structural description of permutations which avoid a specified pattern, a result that permutations which scatter small intervals contain all possible patterns of a given size, a proof that every permutation avoiding a specified pattern has a nearly monotone linear-sized subset, and a ``thin deletion'' result. We also show how one can count sub-patterns of a permutation with an integral, and relate our results to permutation quasirandomness in a…
Given a set of permutations Pi, let S_n(Pi) denote the set of permutations in the symmetric group S_n that avoid every element of Pi in the sense of pattern avoidance. Given a subset S of {1,...,n-1}, let F_S be the fundamental quasisymmetric function indexed by S. Our object of study is the generating function Q_n(Pi) = sum F_{Des sigma} where the sum is over all sigma in S_n(Pi) and Des sigma is the descent set of sigma. We characterize those Pi contained in S_3 such that Q_n(Pi) is symmetric or Schur nonnegative for all n. In the process, we show how each of the resulting Pi can be obtained…
Characterizing sets of permutations whose associated quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive is a long-standing problem in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper we present a general method to construct Schur-positive sets and multisets, based on geometric grid classes and the product operation. Our approach produces many new instances of Schur-positive sets, and provides a broad framework that explains the existence of known such sets that until now were sporadic cases.
The class of bipartite permutation graphs enjoys many nice and important properties. In particular, this class is critically important in the study of clique- and rank-width of graphs, because it is one of the minimal hereditary classes of graphs of unbounded clique- and rank-width. It also contains a number of important subclasses, which are critical with respect to other parameters, such as graph lettericity or shrub-depth, and with respect to other notions, such as well-quasi-ordering or complexity of algorithmic problems. In the present paper we identify critical subclasses of bipartite pe…
This paper is a contribution to the study of hereditary classes of relational structures, these classes being quasi-ordered by embeddability. It deals with the specific case of ordered sets of width two and the corresponding bichains and incomparability graphs. Several open problems about hereditary classes of relational structures which have been considered over the years have positive answer in this case. For example, well-quasi-ordered hereditary classes of finite bipartite permutation graphs, respectively finite 321-avoiding permutations, have been characterized by Korpelainen, Lozin and M…
The class of quasi-chain graphs is an extension of the well-studied class of chain graphs. This latter class enjoys many nice and important properties, such as bounded clique-width, implicit representation, well-quasi-ordering by induced subgraphs, etc. The class of quasi-chain graphs is substantially more complex. In particular, this class is not well-quasi-ordered by induced subgraphs, and the clique-width is not bounded in it. In the present paper, we show that the universe of quasi-chain graphs is at least as complex as the universe of permutations by establishing a bijection between the c…
We discover new hereditary classes of graphs that are minimal (with respect to set inclusion) of unbounded clique-width. The new examples include split permutation graphs and bichain graphs. Each of these classes is characterised by a finite list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. These, therefore, disprove a conjecture due to Daligault, Rao and Thomasse from 2010 claiming that all such minimal classes must be defined by infinitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. In the same paper, Daligault, Rao and Thomasse make another conjecture that every hereditary class of unbounded clique-width …
According to Shapley's game-theoretical result, there exists a unique game value of finite cooperative games that satisfies axioms on additivity, efficiency, null-player property and symmetry. The original setting requires symmetry with respect to arbitrary permutations of players. We analyze the consequences of weakening the symmetry axioms and study quasi-values that are symmetric with respect to permutations from a group $G\leq S_n$. We classify all the permutation groups $G$ that are large enough to assure a unique $G$-symmetric quasi-value, as well as the structure and dimension of the sp…
Given a general multiset $\mathcal{M}=\{1^{m_1},2^{m_2},\ldots,n^{m_n}\}$, where $i$ appears $m_i$ times, a multipermutation $π$ of $\mathcal{M}$ is called {\em quasi-Stirling}, if it contains no subword of the form $abab$ with $a\neq b$. We designate exactly one entry of $π$, say $k\in \mathcal{M}$, which is not the leftmost entry among all entries with the same value, by underlining it in $π$, and we refer to the pair $(π,k)$ as a quasi-Stirling multipermutation of $\mathcal{M}$ rooted at $k$. By introducing certain vertex and edge labeled trees, we give a new bijective proof of an identity …
Let S_n be the nth symmetric group. Given a set of permutations Pi we denote by S_n(Pi) the set of permutations in S_n which avoid Pi in the sense of pattern avoidance. Consider the generating function Q_n(Pi) = sum_pi F_{Des pi} where the sum is over all pi in S_n(Pi) and F_{Des pi} is the fundamental quasisymmetric function corresponding to the descent set of pi. Hamaker, Pawlowski, and Sagan introduced Q_n(Pi) and studied its properties, in particular, finding criteria for when this quasisymmetric function is symmetric or even Schur nonnegative for all n >= 0. The purpose of this paper is t…
Motivated by recent results on quasi-Stirling permutations, which are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid the "crossing" patterns 1212 and 2121, we consider nonnesting permutations, defined as those that avoid the patterns 1221 and 2112 instead. We show that the polynomial giving the distribution of the number of descents on nonnesting permutations is a product of an Eulerian polynomial and a Narayana polynomial. It follows that, rather unexpectedly, this polynomial is palindromic. We provide bijective proofs of these facts by composing various transformations on Dy…
We give a combinatorial description for the weak order on the hyperoctahedral group. This characterization is then used to analyze the order-theoretic properties of the shifted products of hyperoctahedral groups. It is shown that each shifted product is a disjoint union of some intervals, which can be convex embedded into a hyperoctahedral group. As an application, we investigate the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ of signed permutations, related to the fundamental basis via Möbius inversion on the weak order on hyperoctahedral groups. It turns out that the image of a mon…
We consider two related problems arising from a question of R. Graham on quasirandom phenomena in permutation patterns. A ``pattern'' in a permutation $σ$ is the order type of the restriction of $σ: [n] \to [n]$ to a subset $S \subset [n]$. First, is it possible for the pattern counts in a permutation to be exactly equal to their expected values under a uniform distribution? Attempts to address this question lead naturally to an interesting number theoretic problem: when does $k!$ divide $\binom{n}{k}$? Second, if the tensor product of a permutation with large random permutations is random-lik…
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group of degree $n$. We say that $G$ is $2'$-elusive if $n$ is divisible by an odd prime, but $G$ does not contain a derangement of odd prime order. In this paper we study the structure of quasiprimitive and biquasiprimitive $2'$-elusive permutation groups, extending earlier work of Giudici and Xu on elusive groups. As an application, we use our results to investigate automorphisms of finite arc-transitive graphs of prime valency.
Since the early work of Richard Stanley, it has been observed that several permutation statistics have a remarkable property with respect to shuffles of permutations. We formalize this notion of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic and introduce the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible permutation statistic, which encodes the distribution of the statistic over shuffles of permutations. This paper develops a theory of shuffle-compatibility for descent statistics (statistics that depend only on the descent set and length) which has close connections to the theory of $P$-partitions, quas…
We analyze the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations in detail. We give explicit formulas for its antipode, prove that it is a cofree coalgebra, determine its primitive elements and its coradical filtration, and show that it decomposes as a crossed product over the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. In addition, we describe the structure constants of the multiplication as a certain number of facets of the permutahedron. As a consequence we obtain a new interpretation of the product of monomial quasi-symmetric functions in terms of the facial structure of th…
In this paper, we reveal an intriguing relationship between two seemingly unrelated notions: letter graphs and geometric grid classes of permutations. An important property common for both of them is well-quasi-orderability, implying, in a non-constructive way, a polynomial-time recognition of geometric grid classes of permutations and $k$-letter graphs for a fixed $k$. However, constructive algorithms are available only for $k=2$. In this paper, we present the first constructive polynomial-time algorithm for the recognition of $3$-letter graphs. It is based on a structural characterization of…
The graph of zigzag diagrams is a close relative of Young's lattice. The boundary problem for this graph amounts to describing coherent random permutations with descent-set statistic, and is also related to certain positive characters on the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. We establish connections to some further relatives of Young's lattice and solve the boundary problem by reducing it to the classification of spreadable total orders on integers, as recently obtained by Jacka and Warren.
Transactional data may be represented as a bipartite graph $G:=(L \cup R, E)$, where $L$ denotes agents, $R$ denotes objects visible to many agents, and an edge in $E$ denotes an interaction between an agent and an object. Unsupervised learning seeks to detect block structures in the adjacency matrix $Z$ between $L$ and $R$, thus grouping together sets of agents with similar object interactions. New results on quasirandom permutations suggest a non-parametric \textbf{four point test} to measure the amount of block structure in $G$, with respect to vertex orderings on $L$ and $R$. Take disjoint…
In this paper generalized Matsumoto-Tits sections lifting permutations to the algebra associated to a generalized virtual braid monoid are defined. They are then applied to study the defining relations of the quantum quasi-shuffle algebras via the total symmetrization operator.
We show that the Graph Isomorphism (GI) problem and the related problems of String Isomorphism (under group action) (SI) and Coset Intersection (CI) can be solved in quasipolynomial ($\exp((\log n)^{O(1)})$) time. The best previous bound for GI was $\exp(O(\sqrt{n\log n}))$, where $n$ is the number of vertices (Luks, 1983); for the other two problems, the bound was similar, $\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{n}))$, where $n$ is the size of the permutation domain (Babai, 1983). The algorithm builds on Luks's SI framework and attacks the barrier configurations for Luks's algorithm by group theoretic "local c…
