The class of quasi-chain graphs is an extension of the well-studied class of chain graphs. This latter class enjoys many nice and important properties, such as bounded clique-width, implicit representation, well-quasi-ordering by induced subgraphs, etc. The class of quasi-chain graphs is substantially more complex. In particular, this class is not well-quasi-ordered by induced subgraphs, and the clique-width is not bounded in it. In the present paper, we show that the universe of quasi-chain graphs is at least as complex as the universe of permutations by establishing a bijection between the class of all permutations and a subclass of quasi-chain graphs. This implies, in particular, that the induced subgraph isomorphism problem is NP-complete for quasi-chain graphs. On the other hand, we propose a decomposition theorem for quasi-chain graphs that implies an implicit representation for graphs in this class and efficient solutions for some algorithmic problems that are generally intractable.
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a model for translation in protein synthesis and traffic flow; it can be defined as a Markov chain describing particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice. In this article I give an overview of some of the connections of the stationary distribution of the ASEP to combinatorics (tableaux and multiline queues) and special functions (Askey-Wilson polynomials, Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert polynomials). I also make some general observations about positivity in Markov chains.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we generalize the notion of characteristic polynomials of hyperplane and toric arrangements to those of certain abelian Lie group arrangements. Secondly, we give two interpretations for the chromatic quasi-polynomials and their constituents through subspace and toric viewpoints.
The higher $q,t$-Catalan polynomial $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)$ can be defined combinatorially as a weighted sum of lattice paths contained in certain triangles, or algebraically as a complicated sum of rational functions indexed by partitions of $n$. This paper proves the equivalence of the two definitions for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. We also give a bijective proof of the joint symmetry property $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)=C^{(m)}_n(t,q)$ for all $m\geq 1$ and all $n\leq 4$. The proof is based on a general approach for proving joint symmetry that dissects a collection of objects into chains, and then passes…
Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommuta…
A quasi-hereditary algebra is an Artin algebra together with a partial order on its set of isomorphism classes of simple modules which satisfies certain conditions. In this article we investigate all the possible choices that yield to quasi-hereditary structures on a given algebra, in particular we introduce and study what we call the poset of quasi-hereditary structures. Our techniques involve certain quiver decompositions and idempotent reductions. For a path algebra of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}$, we provide a full classification of its quasi-hereditary structures. For types $\mathbb{D}$ and $…
In this expository article we give an introduction to Ehrhart theory, i.e., the theory of integer points in polyhedra, and take a tour through its applications in enumerative combinatorics. Topics include geometric modeling in combinatorics, Ehrhart's method for proving that a couting function is a polynomial, the connection between polyhedral cones, rational functions and quasisymmetric functions, methods for bounding coefficients, combinatorial reciprocity theorems, algorithms for counting integer points in polyhedra and computing rational function representations, as well as visualizations …
In this paper we study maximal chains in certain lattices constructed from powers of chains by iterated lax colimits in the $2$-category of posets. Such a study is motivated by the fact that in lower dimensions, we get some familiar combinatorial objects such as Dyck paths and Kreweras walks.
The finite XXZ Heisenberg spin chain with twisted boundary conditions was considered. For the case of even number of sites $N$, anisotropy parameter -1/2 and twisting angle $2 π/3$ the Hamiltonian of the system possesses an eigenvalue $-3N/2$. The explicit form of the corresponding eigenvector was found for $N \le 12$. Conjecturing that this vector is the ground state of the system we made and verified several conjectures related to the norm of the ground state vector, its component with maximal absolute value and some correlation functions, which have combinatorial nature. In particular, the …
Parametric Presburger arithmetic concerns families of sets S_t in Z^d, for t in N, that are defined using addition, inequalities, constants in Z, Boolean operations, multiplication by t, and quantifiers on variables ranging over Z. That is, such families are defined using quantifiers and Boolean combinations of formulas of the form a(t) x <= b(t), where a(t) is in Z[t]^d, b(t) in Z[t]. A function g: N -> Z is a quasi-polynomial if there exists a period m and polynomials f_0, ..., f_{m-1} in Q[t] such that g(t)=f_i(t) for t congruent to i (mod m.) Recent results of Chen, Li, Sam; Calegari, Walk…
The investigation of the pair correlation statistics of sequences was initially motivated by questions concerning quasi-energy-spectra of quantum systems. However, the subject has been developed far beyond its roots in mathematical physics, and many challenging number-theoretic questions on the distribution of the pair correlations of certain sequences are still open. We give a short introduction into the subject, recall some known results and open problems, and in particular explain the recently established connection between the distribution of pair correlations of sequences on the torus and…
To a word $w$, we associate the rational function $Ψ_w = \prod (x_{w_i} - x_{w_{i+1}})^{-1}$. The main object, introduced by C. Greene to generalize identities linked to Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, is a sum of its images by certain permutations of the variables. The sets of permutations that we consider are the linear extensions of oriented graphs. We explain how to compute this rational function, using the combinatorics of the graph $G$. We also establish a link between an algebraic property of the rational function (the factorization of the numerator) and a combinatorial property of the graph (…
In this letter we continue the investigation of finite XXZ spin chains with periodic boundary conditions and odd number of sites, initiated in paper \cite{S}. As it turned out, for a special value of the asymmetry parameter $Δ=-1/2$ the Hamiltonian of the system has an eigenvalue, which is exactly proportional to the number of sites $E=-3N/2$. Using {\sc Mathematica} we have found explicitly the corresponding eigenvectors for $N \le 17$. The obtained results support the conjecture of paper \cite{S} that this special eigenvalue corresponds to the ground state vector. We make a lot of conjecture…
We use the subgraph replacement method to prove a simple product formula for the tilings of an 8-vertex counterpart of Propp's quasi-hexagons (Problem 16 in New Perspectives in Geometric Combinatorics, Cambridge University Press, 1999), called quasi-octagon.
We obtain several combinatorial results about chains, cycles and orbits of the elements of the symmetric inverse semigroup $\IS_n$ and the set $T_n$ of nilpotent elements in $\IS_n$. We also get some estimates for the growth of $|\IS_n|$ and $|T_n|$, and study random products of elements from $\IS_n$.
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
It is shown that the combinatorics of commutation relations is well suited for analyzing the convergence rate of certain Markov chains. Examples studied include random walk on irreducible representations, a local random walk on partitions whose stationary distribution is the Ewens distribution, and some birth-death chains.
In a highly influential paper, Bidigare, Hanlon and Rockmore showed that a number of popular Markov chains are random walks on the faces of a hyperplane arrangement. Their analysis of these Markov chains took advantage of the monoid structure on the set of faces. This theory was later extended by Brown to a larger class of monoids called left regular bands. In both cases, the representation theory of these monoids played a prominent role. In particular, it was used to compute the spectrum of the transition operators of the Markov chains and to prove diagonalizability of the transition operator…
In this paper, we first present the relation between a transversal in a Latin square with some concepts in its Latin square graph, and give an equivalent condition for a Latin square has an orthogonal mate. The most famous open problem involving Combinatorics is to find maximum number of disjoint transversals in a Latin square. So finding some family of decomposable Latin squares into disjoint transversals is our next aim. In the next section, we give an equivalent statement of a conjecture which has been attributed to Brualdi, Stein and Ryser by the concept of quasi-transversal. Finally, we p…
The notion of augmenting graphs generalizes Berge's idea of augmenting chains, which was used by Edmonds in his celebrated solution of the maximum matching problem. This problem is a special case of the more general maximum independent set (MIS) problem. Recently, the augmenting graph approach has been successfully applied to solve MIS in various other special cases. However, our knowledge of augmenting graphs is still very limited, and we do not even know what the minimal infinite classes of augmenting graphs are. In the present paper, we find an answer to this question and apply it to extend…

Crystal graphs, in the sense of Kashiwara, carry a natural monoid structure given by identifying words labelling vertices that appear in the same position of isomorphic components of the crystal. In the particular case of the crystal graph for the $q$-analogue of the special linear Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n}$, this monoid is the celebrated plactic monoid, whose elements can be identified with Young tableaux. The crystal graph and the so-called Kashiwara operators interact beautifully with the combinatorics of Young tableaux and with the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence and so prov…
