Let $M$ be a compact manifold with a metric $g$ and with a fixed spin structure $χ$. Let $λ\_1^+(g)$ be the first non-negative eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on $(M,g,χ)$. We set $$τ(M,χ):= \sup \inf λ\_1^+(g)$$ where the infimum runs over all metrics $g$ of volume 1 in a conformal class $[g\_0]$ on $M$ and where the supremum runs over all conformal classes $[g\_0]$ on $M$. Let $(M^#,χ^#)$ be obtained from $(M,χ)$ by 0-dimensional surgery. We prove that $$τ(M^#,χ^#)\geq τ(M,χ).$$ As a corollary we can calculate $τ(M,χ)$ for any Riemann surface $M$.
We associate to a compact spin manifold M a real-valued invariant τ(M) by taking the supremum over all conformal classes over the infimum inside each conformal class of the first positive Dirac eigenvalue, normalized to volume 1. This invariant is a spinorial analogue of Schoen's $σ$-constant, also known as the smooth Yamabe number. We prove that if N is obtained from M by surgery of codimension at least 2, then $τ(N) \geq \min\{τ(M),Λ_n\}$ with $Λ_n>0$. Various topological conclusions can be drawn, in particular that τis a spin-bordism invariant below $Λ_n$. Below $Λ_n$, the values of $τ$ can…
In this paper we give a geometrically invariant spinorial representation of surfaces in four-dimensional space forms. In the Euclidean space, we obtain a representation formula which generalizes the Weierstrass representation formula of minimal surfaces. We also obtain as particular cases the spinorial characterizations of surfaces in $\R^3$ and in $S^3$ given by T. Friedrich and by B. Morel
This work deals with the conformal transformations in six-dimensional spinorial formalism. Several conformally invariant equations are obtained and their geometrical interpretation are worked out. Finally, the integrability conditions for some of these equations are established. Moreover, in the course of the article, some useful identities involving the curvature of the spinorial connection are attained and a digression about harmonic forms and more general massless fields is made.
In the work of Ammann, Dahl and Humbert it has turned out that the Yamabe invariant on closed manifolds is a bordism invariant below a certain threshold constant. A similar result holds for a spinorial analogon. These threshold constants are characterized through Yamabe-type equations on products of spheres with rescaled hyperbolic spaces. We give variational characterizations of these threshold constants, and our investigations lead to an explicit positive lower bound for the spinorial threshold constants.
In this paper we give a spinorial representation of submanifolds of any dimension and codimension into Lie groups equipped with left invariant metrics. As applications, we get a spinorial proof of the Fundamental Theorem for submanifolds into Lie groups, we recover previously known representations of submanifolds in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and in the 3-dimensional Lie groups $S^3$ and $E(κ,τ),$ and we get a new spinorial representation for surfaces in the 3-dimensional semi-direct products: this achieves the spinorial representations of surfaces in the 3-dimensional homogeneous spaces. We finally indic…
We prove that for cobordant closed spin manifolds of dimension $n\geq 3$ the associated spaces of metrics with invertible Dirac operator are homotopy equivalent. This is the spinorial counterpart of a similar result on positive scalar curvature of Chernysh/Walsh and generalizes the surgery result of Ammann-Dahl-Humbert on the existence of metrics with invertible Dirac operator under surgery. We also give a relative statement of this homotopy equivalence.
We consider the equivariant Yamabe problem, i.e. the Yamabe problem on the space of G-invariant metrics for a compact Lie group G. The G-Yamabe invariant is analogously defined as the supremum of the constant scalar curvatures of unit volume G-invariant metrics minimizing the total scalar curvature functional in their G-invariant conformal subclasses. We prove a formula about how the G-Yamabe invariant changes under the surgery of codimension 3 or more, and compute some G-Yamabe invariants.
We study the Yamabe invariant of manifolds obtained as connected sums along submanifolds of codimension greater than 2. In particular, given a compact smooth manifold M which does not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant of M is an upper bound for the Yamabe invariant of any manifold obtained by performing surgery in M on spheres of codimension greater than 2 .
We prove a surgery formula for the smooth Yamabe invariant $σ(M)$ of a compact manifold $M$. Assume that $N$ is obtained from $M$ by surgery of codimension at least 3. We prove the existence of a positive number $Λ_n$, depending only on the dimension $n$ of $M$, such that $$ σ(N) \geq \min{σ(M),Λ_n}. $$
By using the gluing formula of the Seiberg-Witten invariant, we compute the Yamabe invariant Y(X) of 4-manifolds X obtained by performing surgeries along points, circles or tori on compact Kaehler surfaces. For instance, if M is a compact Kaehler surface of nonnegative Kodaira dimension, and N is a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold with b_2^+(N)=0 and Y(N)>= 0, then we show that Y(M # N)=Y(M).
Motivated by recent progress on a spinorial analogue of the Yamabe problem in the geometric literature, we study a conformally invariant spinor field equation on the $m$-sphere, $m\geq2$. Via variational methods and the spinorial Weierstraß representation, we study the problem of prescribing mean curvature for the immersion $S^2\to\mathbb{R}^3$.
K-area is an invariant for Riemannian manifolds introduced by Gromov as an obstruction to the existence of positive scalar curvature. However in general it is difficult to determine whether K-area is finite or not. though the definition of K-area is quite natural. In this paper, we study how the invariant changes under surgery.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$. For a metric $g$ on $M$, we let $\la_2(g)$ be the second eigenvalue of the Yamabe operator $L_g:= \frac{4(n-1)}{n-2} Δ_g + \scal_g$. Then, the second Yamabe invariant is defined as $$ \si_2(M) \definedas \sup \inf_{h \in [g]} \la_2(h) \Vol(M,h)^{2/n}. $$ where the supremum is taken over all metrics $g$ and the infimum is taken over the metrics in the conformal class $[g]$. Assume that $\si_2(M)>0$. In the spirit of \cite{ammann.dahl.humbert:08}, we prove that if $N$ is obtained from $M$ by a $k$-dimensional surgery ($0 \leq k…
We give a surgery formula for the torsions and Seiberg-Witten invariants associated with $Spin^c$-structures on 3-manifolds. We use the technique of Reidemeister-type torsions and their refinements.
On a n-dimensional connected compact manifold with non-empty boundary equipped with a Riemannian metric, a spin structure and a chirality operator, we study some properties of a spin conformal invariant defined from the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator under the chiral bag boundary condition. More precisely, we show that we can derive a spinorial analogue of Aubin's inequality.
Let X be a closed Riemannian manifold and let H\hookrightarrow X be an embedded hypersurface. Let X=X_+ \cup_H X_- be a decomposition of X into two manifolds with boundary, with X_+ \cap X_- = H. In this expository article, surgery -- or gluing -- formulæfor several geometric and spectral invariants associated to a Dirac-type operator ð_X on X are presented. Considered in detail are: the index of ð_X, the index bundle and the determinant bundle associated to a family of such operators, the eta invariant and the analytic torsion. In each case the precise form of the surgery theorems, as well as…
We give a simple criterion for a pointwise curvature condition to be stable under surgery. Namely, a curvature condition $C$, which is understood to be an open, convex, O(n)-invariant cone in the space of algebraic curvature operators, is stable under surgeries of codimension at least $c$ provided it contains the curvature operator corresponding to $S^{c-1} \times \reals^{n-c+1}$, $c \geq 3$. This is used to generalize the well-known classification result of positive scalar curvature in the simply-connected case in the following way: Any simply-connected manifold $M^n$, $n \geq 5$, which is ei…
We develop an invariant approach to $SU(2)$--structures on spin $5$--manifolds. We characterize (via spinor approach) the subspaces in the spinor bundle which induce the same group isomorphic to $SU(2)$. Moreover, we show how to induce quaternionic structure on the contact distribution of considered $SU(2)$--structure. We conclude with the invariance of certain components of the covariant derivative $\nablaφ$, where $φ$ is any spinor field defining considered $SU(2)$--structure. This shows, what expected, that (at least some of) the intrinsic torsion modules, can be derived invariantly with th…
Assume that M is a compact n-dimensional manifold and that N is obtained by surgery along a k-dimensional sphere, k\le n-3. The smooth Yamabe invariants σ(M) and σ(N) satisfy σ(N)\ge min (σ(M),Λ) for Λ>0. We derive explicit lower bounds for Λin dimensions where previous methods failed, namely for (n,k)\in {(4,1),(5,1),(5,2),(6,3),(9,1),(10,1)}. With methods from surgery theory and bordism theory several gap phenomena for smooth Yamabe invariants can be deduced.
We construct a rotationally invariant Ricci flow through surgery starting at any closed rotationally invariant Riemannian manifold. We demonstrate that a sequence of such Ricci flows with surgery converges to a Ricci flow spacetime in the sense of [32]. Results of Bamler-Kleiner [8] and Haslhofer [29] then guarantee the uniqueness and stability of these spacetimes given initial data. We simplify aspects of this proof in our setting, and show that for rotationally invariant Ricci flows, the closeness of spacetimes can be measured by equivariant comparison maps. Finally we show that the blowup r…
We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.
In work of Higson-Roe the fundamental role of the signature as a homotopy and bordism invariant for oriented manifolds is made manifest in how it and related secondary invariants define a natural transformation between the (Browder-Novikov-Sullivan-Wall) surgery exact sequence and a long exact sequence of C*-algebra K-theory groups. In recent years the (higher) signature invariants have been extended from closed oriented manifolds to a class of stratified spaces known as L-spaces or Cheeger spaces. In this paper we show that secondary invariants, such as the rho-class, also extend from closed …
We considered a surgery, called Lagrangian attaching disk surgery, that can be applied to a Lagrangian surface L at the presence of a Lagrangian attaching disk D, to obtain a new Lagrangian surface L' which is always smoothly isotopic to L. We showed that this type of surgery includes all even generalized Dehn twists as constructed by Paul Seidel. We also constructed a new symplectic invariant, called y-index, for orientable closed Lagrangian surfaces immersed in a parallelizable symplectic 4-manifold W. With y-index we proved that L and L' are not Hamiltonian isotopic. We also obtained new ex…
We study noncommutative eta- and rho-forms for homotopy equivalences. We prove a product formula for them and show that the rho-forms are well-defined on the structure set. We also define an index theoretic map from L-theory to C*-algebraic K-theory and show that it is compatible with the rho-forms. Our approach, which is based on methods of Hilsum-Skandalis and Piazza-Schick, also yields a unified analytic proof of the homotopy invariance of the higher signature class and of the L^2-signature for manifolds with boundary.
We utilize a condition for algebraic curvature operators called surgery stability as suggested by the work of S. Hoelzel to investigate the space of riemannian metrics over closed manifolds satisfying these conditions. Our main result is a parametrized Gromov-Lawson construction with not necessarily trivial normal bundles and shows that the homotopy type of this space of metrics is invariant under surgeries of a suitable codimension. This is a generalization of a well-known theorem by V. Chernysh and M. Walsh for metrics of positive scalar curvature. As an application of our method, we show th…
For a compact connected manifold M of dimension n greater than 3 and with no metric of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant is unchanged under surgery on spheres of dimension different from 1, n-2 and n-1. We use this result to give new computations of the invariant in dimension four and display new examples of 4-manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics.
We apply an equivariant version of Perelman's Ricci flow with surgery to study smooth actions by finite groups on closed 3-manifolds. Our main result is that such actions on elliptic and hyperbolic 3-manifolds are conjugate to isometric actions. Combining our results with results by Meeks and Scott [17], it follows that such actions on geometric 3-manifolds (in the sense of Thurston) are always geometric, i.e. there exist invariant locally homogeneous Riemannian metrics. This answers a question posed by Thurston in [32].
Surgery exact triangles in various 3-manifold Floer homology theories provide an important tool in studying and computing the relevant Floer homology groups. These exact triangles relate the invariants of 3-manifolds, obtained by three different Dehn surgeries on a fixed knot. In this paper, the behavior of $SU(N)$-instanton Floer homology with respect to Dehn surgery is studied. In particular, it is shown that there are surgery exact tetragons and pentagons, respectively, for $SU(3)$- and $SU(4)$-instanton Floer homologies. It is also conjectured that $SU(N)$-instanton Floer homology in gener…
We discuss a metric description of the divergence of a (projectively) Anosov flow in dimension 3, in terms of its associated growth rates and give metric and contact geometric characterizations of when a projectively Anosov flow is Anosov. Then, we study the symmetries that the existence of an invariant volume form yields on the geometry of an Anosov flow, from various viewpoints of the theory of contact hyperbolas, Reeb dynamics and Liouville geometry, and give characterizations of when an Anosov flow is volume preserving in terms of those theories. We finally use our study to show that the b…
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group, and $M$ a compact Hamiltonian $G$-space, with moment map $J$. For each $G$-equivariant Hermitian vector bundle $E$ over $M$, one has an associated twisted Spin-C Dirac operator, whose equivariant index is a symplectic invariant of $E$. In the present paper, we study gluing properties of the equivariant index under "symplectic cutting" operations. Our main application is a proof of the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture, which says that if $E=L$ is a quantizing line bundle and $0$ a regular value of $J$, the multiplicity of the trivial representation in the…
