We study multivariable Christoffel-Darboux kernels, which may be viewed as reproducing kernels for antisymmetric orthogonal polynomials, and also as correlation functions for products of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. Using their interpretation as reproducing kernels, we obtain simple proofs of Pfaffian and determinant formulas, as well as Schur polynomial expansions, for such kernels. In subsequent work, these results are applied in combinatorics (enumeration of marked shifted tableaux) and number theory (representation of integers as sums of squares).
The Christoffel-Darboux kernels for orthogonal polynomials in several real variables are investigated within the context of the three term recurrence relation reformulated for this purpose. Examples of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and on the Bernoulli lemniscate are discussed.
We obtain an extension of the Christoffel--Darboux formula for matrix orthogonal polynomials with a generalized Hankel symmetry, including the Adler-van Moerbeke generalized orthogonal polynomials.
In 'Tractable semi-algebraic approximation using Christoffel-Darboux kernel' Marx, Pauwels, Weisser, Henrion and Lasserre conjectured, that the approximation rate $\mathcal O(\frac 1 {\sqrt(d)})$ of a Lipschitz functions by a semi-algebraic function induced by a Christoffel- Darboux kernel of degree $d$ in the $L^1$ norm can be improved for more regular functions. Here we will show, that for semi-algebraic and definable functions the results can be strengthened to a rational approximation rate in the $L^\infty$ norm.
For Jacobi parameters belonging to one of the three classes: asymptotically periodic, periodically modulated and the blend of these two, we study the asymptotic behavior of the Christoffel functions and the scaling limits of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel. We assume regularity of Jacobi parameters in terms of the Stolz class. We emphasize that the first class only gives rise to measures with compact supports.
We study the stability of convergence of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel, associated with a compactly supported measure, to the sine kernel, under perturbations of the Jacobi coefficients of the measure. We prove stability under variations of the boundary conditions and stability in a weak sense under $\ell^1$ and random $\ell^2$ diagonal perturbations. We also show that convergence to the sine kernel at $x$ implies that $μ(\{x\})=0$.
Bleher and Kuijlaars recently showed that the eigenvalue correlations from matrix ensembles with external source can be expressed by means of a kernel built out of special multiple orthogonal polynomials. We derive a Christoffel-Darboux formula for this kernel for general multiple orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we show that the formula can be written in terms of the solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials, which will be useful for asymptotic analysis.
We study scaling limits of deterministic Jacobi matrices at a fixed point, $x_0$, and their connection to the scaling limits of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel at that point. We show that in the case that the orthogonal polynomials are bounded at $x_0$, a subsequential limit always exists and can be expressed as a canonical system. We further show that under weak conditions on the associated measure, bulk universality of the CD kernel is equivalent to the existence of a limit of a particular explicit form.
An alternative expression for the Christoffel--Darboux formula for multiple orthogonal polynomials of mixed type is derived from the $LU$ factorization of the moment matrix of a given measure and two sets of weights. We use the action of the generalized Jacobi matrix $J$, also responsible for the recurrence relations, on the linear forms and their duals to obtain the result.
We study orthogonal polynomials with periodically modulated Jacobi parameters in the case when $0$ lies on the soft edge of the spectrum of the corresponding periodic Jacobi matrix. We determine when the orthogonality measure is absolutely continuous and we provide a constructive formula for it in terms of the limit of Turán determinants. We next consider asymptotics of the solutions of associated second order difference equation. Finally, we study scaling limits of the Christoffel--Darboux kernel.
Quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families are studied. Bivariate linear functionals encompass large families of orthogonalities like Sobolev and discrete Sobolev types. Two possible Christoffel transformations of these linear functionals are discussed. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial, or are multiplied by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial. For the Geronimus transformation, the linear functional is perturbed in two possible manners as well, by a div…
The investigation of universality questions for local eigenvalue statistics continues to be a driving force in the theory of Random Matrices. For Matrix Models [53] the method of orthogonal polynomials can be used and the asymptotics of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel [59] become the key for studying universality. In this paper the existing results on the CD-kernel will be extended in two directions. Firstly, in order to analyze the transition from the universal to the non-universal regime, we provide leading order asymptotics that are global rather than local. This allows e.g. to describe the …
This paper is a continuation of the recent paper "CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials: Christoffel formulas for Christoffel and Geronimus transformations" by the same authors. The behavior of quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane, characterized by bivariate linear functionals, and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families --including Sobolev and discrete Sobolev orthogonalities--- under two type of Geronimus--Uvarov transformations is studied. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial and divided by the comple…
Computing asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients of X1-Jacobi polynomials we investigate the limit of Christoffel function. We also study the relation between the normalized counting measure based on the zeros of the modified average characteristic polynomial and the Christoffel function in limit. The proofs of corresponding theorems with respect to ordinary orthogonal polynomials are based on the three-term recurrence relation. The main point is that exceptional orthogonal polynomials possess at least five-term formulae and so the Christoffel-Darboux formula also fails. It seems that thes…
The Gauss-Borel or $LU$ factorization of Gram matrices of bilinear forms is the pivotal element in the discussion of the theory of biorthogonal polynomials. The construction of biorthogonal families of polynomials and its second kind functions, of the spectral matrices modeling the multiplication by the independent variable $x$, the Christoffel-Darboux kernel and its projection properties, are discussed from this point of view. Then, the Hankel case is presented and different properties, specific of this case, as the three terms relations, Heine formulas, Gauss quadrature and the Christoffel-D…
Orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of a Cantero-Moral-Velazquez moment matrix, which is constructed in terms of a complex quasi-definite measure supported in the unit circle. The factorization of the moment matrix leads to orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the corresponding second kind functions. Jacobi operators, 5-term recursion relations and Christoffel-Darboux kernels, projecting to particular spaces of truncated Laurent polynomials, and corresponding Christo…
Recently a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization was presented. These type of matrices are oscillatory. In this paper the Lima-Loureiro hypergeometric multiple orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi-Piñeiro multiple orthogonal polynomials are discussed at the light of this bidiagonal factorization for tetradiagonal matrices. The Darboux transformations of tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrices is studied and Christoffel formulas for the elements of the bidiagonal factorization are given, i.e., the bidiagonal factorization …
We describe an approach to universality limits for orthogonal polynomials on the real line which is completely local and uses only the boundary behavior of the Weyl m-function at the point. We show that bulk universality of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel holds for any point where the imaginary part of the m-function has a positive finite nontangential limit. This approach is based on studying a matrix version of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel and the realization that bulk universality for this kernel at a point is equivalent to the fact that the corresponding m-function has normal limits at th…
Let $\un,$ be a quasi-definite linear functional defined on the space of polynomials $\mathbb{P}.$ For such a functional we can define a sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials (SMOP in short) $(P_n)_{n\geq 0},$ which satisfies a three term recurrence relation. Shifting one unity the recurrence coefficient indices given the sequence of associated polynomials of the first kind which are orthogonal with respect to a linear functional denoted by $\un^{(1)}$. In the literature two special transformations of the functional $\un$ are studied, the canonical Christoffel transformation $\widetilde \un…
In this paper, we study complex Jacobi matrices obtained by the Christoffel and Geronimus transformations at a nonreal complex number, including the properties of the corresponding sequences of orthogonal polynomials. We also present some invariant and semi-invariant properties of Jacobi matrices under such transformations. For instance, we show that a Nevai class is invariant under the transformations in question, which is not true in general, and that the ratio asymptotic still holds outside the spectrum of the corresponding symmetric complex Jacobi matrix but the spectrum could include one …
Darboux transformations for polynomial perturbations of a real multivariate measure are found. The 1D Christoffel formula is extended to the multidimensional realm: multivariate orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of last quasi-determinants and sample matrices. The coefficients of these matrices are the original orthogonal polynomials evaluated at a set of nodes, which is supposed to be poised. A discussion for the existence of poised sets is given in terms of algebraic hypersufaces in the complex affine space.
Matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials in the unit circle and the theory of Toda-like integrable systems are connected using the Gauss--Borel factorization of two, left and a right, Cantero-Morales-Velazquez block moment matrices, which are constructed using a quasi-definite matrix measure. A block Gauss-Borel factorization problem of these moment matrices leads to two sets of biorthogonal matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials and matrix Szegő polynomials, which can be expressed in terms of Schur complements of bordered truncations of the block moment matrix. The corresponding block extension o…
Let J be a monic Jacobi matrix associated with the Cauchy transform F of a probability measure. We construct a pair of the lower and upper triangular block matrices L and U such that J=LU and the matrix J_c=UL is a monic generalized Jacobi matrix associated with the function F_c(z)=zF(z)+1. It turns out that the Christoffel transformation J_c of a bounded monic Jacobi matrix J can be unbounded. This phenomenon is shown to be related to the effect of accumulating at infinity of the poles of the Padé approximants of the function F_c although F_c is holomorphic at infinity. The case of the UL-fac…
Given a nontrivial positive measure $μ$ on the unit circle, the associated Christoffel-Darboux kernels are $K_n(z, w;μ) = \sum_{k=0}^{n}\overline{φ_{k}(w;μ)}\,φ_{k}(z;μ)$, $n \geq 0$, where $φ_{k}(\cdot; μ)$ are the orthonormal polynomials with respect to the measure $μ$. Let the positive measure $ν$ on the unit circle be given by $d ν(z) = |G_{2m}(z)|\, d μ(z)$, where $G_{2m}$ is a conjugate reciprocal polynomial of exact degree $2m$. We establish a determinantal formula expressing $\{K_n(z,w;ν)\}_{n \geq 0}$ directly in terms of $\{K_n(z,w;μ)\}_{n \geq 0}$. Furthermore, we consider the speci…
Multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOP) are a non-definite version of matrix orthogonal polynomials. They are described by a Riemann-Hilbert matrix Y consisting of four blocks Y_{1,1}, Y_{1,2}, Y_{2,1} and Y_{2,2}. In this paper, we show that det Y_{1,1} (det Y_{2,2}) equals the average characteristic polynomial (average inverse characteristic polynomial, respectively) over the probabilistic ensemble that is associated to the MOP. In this way we generalize classical results for orthogonal polynomials, and also some recent results for MOP of type I and type II. We then extend our results to arbit…
We prove that for Gaussian random normal matrices the correlation function has universal behavior. Using the technique of orthogonal polynomials and identities similar to the Christoffel-Darboux formula, we find that in the limit, as the dimension of the matrix tends to infinity, the density of eigenvalues converges to a constant inside of an ellipse and to zero outside. The convergence holds locally uniformly. At the boundary, in scaled coordinates holding the distance between eigenvalues constant, we show that the density is falling off to zero like the complementary error function. The conv…
We study double integral representations of Christoffel-Darboux kernels associated with two examples of Hermite-type matrix orthogonal polynomials. We show that the Fredholm determinants connected with these kernels are related through the Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov (IIKS) theory with a certain Riemann-Hilbert problem. Using this Riemann-Hilbert problem we obtain a Lax pair whose compatibility conditions lead to a non-commutative version of the Painleve' IV differential equation for each family.
We study multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I and type II which have orthogonality conditions with respect to r measures. These polynomials are connected by their recurrence relation of order r+1. First we show a relation with the eigenvalue problem of a banded lower Hessenberg matrix L_n, containing the recurrence coefficients. As a consequence, we easily find that the multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I and type II satisfy a generalized Christoffel-Darboux identity. Furthermore, we explain the notion of multiple Gaussian quadrature (for proper multi-indices), which is an extension…
We show that the average characteristic polynomial P_n(z) = E [\det(zI-M)] of the random Hermitian matrix ensemble Z_n^{-1} \exp(-Tr(V(M)-AM))dM is characterized by multiple orthogonality conditions that depend on the eigenvalues of the external source A. For each eigenvalue a_j of A, there is a weight and P_n has n_j orthogonality conditions with respect to this weight, if n_j is the multiplicity of a_j. The eigenvalue correlation functions have determinantal form, as shown by Zinn-Justin. Here we give a different expression for the kernel. We derive a Christoffel-Darboux formula in case A ha…
The recently found hypergeometric multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line by Lima and Loureiro are shown to be random walk polynomials. It is proven that the corresponding Jacobi matrix and its transpose, which are nonnegative matrices and describe higher recurrence relations, can be normalized to two stochastic matrices, dual to each other. Using the Christoffel-Darboux formula on the step-line and the Poincaré theory for non-homogeneous recurrence relations it is proven that both stochastic matrices are related by transposition in the large $n$ limit. These random walks are beyond b…
One object of interest in random matrix theory is a family of point ensembles (random point configurations) related to various systems of classical orthogonal polynomials. The paper deals with a one--parametric deformation of these ensembles, which is defined in terms of the biorthogonal polynomials of Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite type. Our main result is a series of explicit expressions for the correlation functions in the scaling limit (as the number of points goes to infinity). As in the classical case, the correlation functions have determinantal form. They are given by certain new kernels…
Let \( \{φ_i\}_{i=0}^\infty \) be a sequence of orthonormal polynomials on the unit circle with respect to a probability measure \( μ\). We study zero distribution of random linear combinations of the form \[ P_n(z)=\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}η_iφ_i(z), \] where \( η_0,\dots,η_{n-1} \) are i.i.d. standard Gaussian variables. We use the Christoffel-Darboux formula to simplify the density functions provided by Vanderbei for the expected number real and complex of zeros of \( P_n \). From these expressions, under the assumption that \( μ\) is in the Nevai class, we deduce the limiting value of these density…
Multiple orthogonality is considered in the realm of a Gauss--Borel factorization problem for a semi-infinite moment matrix. Perfect combinations of weights and a finite Borel measure are constructed in terms of M-Nikishin systems. These perfect combinations ensure that the problem of mixed multiple orthogonality has a unique solution, that can be obtained from the solution of a Gauss--Borel factorization problem for a semi-infinite matrix, which plays the role of a moment matrix. This leads to sequences of multiple orthogonal polynomials, their duals and second kind functions. It also gives t…

Let $\{f_j\}_{j=0}^n$ be a sequence of orthonormal polynomials where the orthogonality relation is satisfied on either the real line or on the unit circle. We study zero distribution of random linear combinations of the form $$P_n(z)=\sum_{j=0}^nη_jf_j(z),$$ where $η_0,\dots,η_n$ are complex-valued i.i.d.~standard Gaussian random variables. Using the Christoffel-Darboux formula, the density function for the expected number of zeros of $P_n$ in these cases takes a very simple shape. From these expressions, under the mere assumption that the orthogonal polynomials are from the Nevai class, we gi…
Given a non-negative Jacobi matrix describing higher order recurrence relations for multiple orthogonal polynomials of type~II and corresponding linear forms of type I, a general strategy for constructing a pair of stochastic matrices, dual to each other, is provided. The corresponding Markov chains (or 1D random walks) allow, in one transition, to reach for the N-th previous states, to remain in the state or reach for the immediately next state. The dual Markov chains allow, in one transition, to reach for the N-th next states, to remain in the state or reach for immediately previous state. T…
We prove universality at the edge of the spectrum for unitary (beta=2), orthogonal (beta=1) and symplectic (beta=4) ensembles of random matrices in the scaling limit for a class of weights w(x)=exp(-V(x)) where V is a polynomial, V(x)=kappa_{2m}x^{2m}+..., kappa_{2m}>0. The precise statement of our results is given in Theorem 1.1 and Corollaries 1.2, 1.3 below. For a proof of universality in the bulk of the spectrum, for the same class of weights, for unitary ensembles see [DKMVZ2], and for orthogonal and symplectic ensembles see [DG]. Our starting point in the unitary case is [DKMVZ2], and fo…
