This paper is a part of our programme to generalise the Hardy-Littlewood method to handle systems of linear questions in primes. This programme is laid out in our paper Linear Equations in Primes [LEP], which accompanies this submission. In particular, the results of this paper may be used, together with the machinery of [LEP], to establish an asymptotic for the number of four-term progressions p_1 < p_2 < p_3 < p_4 <= N of primes, and more generally any problem counting prime points inside a ``non-degenerate'' affine lattice of codimension at most 2.
The main result of this paper is a proof of the Mobius and Nilsequences Conjecture for 1 and 2-step nilsequences. This conjecture is introduced in [LEP] and amounts to showing that if G/Γis an s-step nilmanifold, s <= 2, if F : G/Γ-> [-1,1] is a Lipschitz function, and if T_g : G/Γ-> G/Γis the action of g \in G on G/Γ, then the Mobius function μ(n) is orthogonal to the sequence F(T_g^n x) in a fairly strong sense, uniformly in g and x in G/Γ. This can be viewed as a ``quadratic'' generalisation of an exponential sum estimate of Davenport, and is proven by the following the methods of Vinogradov and Vaughan.

In this paper, we evaluate asymptotically the sum \[ \sum_{d \leq X} \left( \sum_{n \leq Y} μ(n)\leg {8d}{n} \right)^2, \] where $\leg {8d}{n}$ is the Kronecker symbol and $d$ runs over positive, odd, square-free integers.
We establish cancellation in short sums of certain special trace functions over $\mathbb{F}_q[u]$ below the Pólya-Vinogradov range, with savings approaching square-root cancellation as $q$ grows. This is used to resolve the $\mathbb{F}_q[u]$-analog of Chowla's conjecture on cancellation in Möbius sums over polynomial sequences, and of the Bateman-Horn conjecture in degree $2$, for some values of $q$. A final application is to sums of trace functions over primes in $\mathbb{F}_q[u]$.
We examine correlations of the Möbius function over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ with linear or quadratic phases, that is, averages of the form \begin{equation} \label{eq:average} \frac{1}{q^n}\sum_{\text{deg }f<n} μ(f)χ(Q(f)) \end{equation} for an additive character $χ$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a polynomial $Q\in\mathbb{F}_q[x_0,\ldots,x_{n-1}]$ of degree at most 2 in the coefficients $x_0,\ldots, x_{n-1}$ of $f=\sum_{i< n}x_i t^i$. Like in the integers, it is reasonable to expect that, due to the random-like behaviour of $μ$, such sums should exhibit considerable cancellation. In this paper we show that…
We prove that the arboreal Galois representation attached to a large class of quadratic polynomials defined over a field of rational functions in characteristic zero has finite index in the full automorphism group of the associated preimage tree. Moreover, we show that the index is bounded, in most cases, independently of the polynomial.
Using geometric methods, we improve on the function field version of the Burgess bound, and show that, when restricted to certain special subspaces, the Möbius function over $\mathbb F_q[T]$ can be mimicked by Dirichlet characters. Combining these, we obtain a level of distribution close to $1$ for the Möbius function in arithmetic progressions, and resolve Chowla's $k$-point correlation conjecture with large uniformity in the shifts. Using a function field variant of a result by Fouvry-Michel on exponential sums involving the Möbius function, we obtain a level of distribution beyond $1/2$ for…
In this paper we establish the function field analogue of Bateman-Horn conjecture in short interval in the limit of a large finite field. Hence we start with counting prime polynomials generated by primitive quadratic functions in short intervals. To this end we further work out on function field analogs of cancellation of Mobius sums and its correlations(Chowla type sums) and confirm that square root cancellation in Mobius sums is equivalent to square root cancellation in Chowla type sums.
We demonstrate that $$\|μ\|_{U^3([N])} \ll_{A}^{\text{ineff}} \log^{-A}(N)$$ $$\|Λ- Λ_Q\|_{U^3([N])} \ll_{A}^{\text{ineff}} \log^{-A}(N)$$ for any $A > 0$ where $Λ_Q$ is an approximant to the von Mangoldt function and will be defined below, improving upon a bound of Tao-Teräväinen (2021). As a consequence, among other things, we have the following: $$\mathbb{E}_{x, y \in [N], x + 3y \in [N]} Λ(x)Λ(x + y)Λ(x + 2y)Λ(x + 3y) = \mathfrak{S} + O_A(\log^{-A}(N))$$ where $\mathfrak{S}$ is the singular series for the configuration $(x, x + y, x + 2y, x + 3y)$. In fact, we show that $$\|μ- μ_{Siegel}\|…
We give improved bounds for our theorem in [GW09], which shows that a system of linear forms on $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ with squares that are linearly independent has the expected number of solutions in any linearly uniform subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$. While in [GW09] the dependence between the uniformity of the set and the resulting error in the average over the linear system was of tower type, we now obtain a doubly exponential relation between the two parameters. Instead of the structure theorem for bounded functions due to Green and Tao [GrT08], we use the Hahn-Banach theorem to decompose the func…
A very useful fact in additive combinatorics is that analytic expressions that can be used to count the number of structures of various kinds in subsets of Abelian groups are robust under quasirandom perturbations, and moreover that quasirandomness can often be measured by means of certain easily described norms, known as uniformity norms. However, determining which uniformity norms work for which structures turns out to be a surprisingly hard question. In [GW09a] and [GW09b, GW09c] we gave a complete answer to this question for groups of the form $G=\mathbb{F}_p^n$, provided $p$ is not too sm…
For a number field K with absolute Galois group G_K, we consider the action of G_K on the infinite tree of preimages of a point in K under a degree-two rational function phi, with particular attention to the case when phi commutes with a non-trivial Mobius transfomation. In a sense this is a dynamical systems analogue to the l-adic Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve, with particular attention to the CM case. Using a result about the discriminants of numerators of iterates of phi, we give a criterion for the image of the action to be as large as possible. This criterion is in t…
Since the theorems of Schur and van der Waerden, numerous partition regularity results have been proved for linear equations, but progress has been scarce for non-linear ones, the hardest case being equations in three variables. We prove partition regularity for certain equations involving forms in three variables, showing for example that the equations $16x^2+9y^2=n^2$ and $x^2+y^2-xy=n^2$ are partition regular, where $n$ is allowed to vary freely in $\mathbb{N}$. For each such problem we establish a density analogue that can be formulated in ergodic terms as a recurrence property for actions…
It is well-known that if a subset A of a finite Abelian group G satisfies a quasirandomness property called uniformity of degree k, then it contains roughly the expected number of arithmetic progressions of length k, that is, the number of progressions one would expect in a random subset of G of the same density as A. One is naturally led to ask which degree of uniformity is required of A in order to control the number of solutions to a general system of linear equations. Using so-called "quadratic Fourier analysis", we show that certain linear systems that were previously thought to require q…
In the first part, we consider generalized quadratic Gauss sums as finite analogues of the Jacobi theta function, and the reciprocity law for Gauss sums as their transformation formula. We attach finite Dirichlet series to Gauss sums using a Möbius transform, and show they have a functional equation, Euler product factorization, and roots only on the critical line. In the second part, we prove a general reciprocity law for sums of exponentials of rational quadratic forms in any number of variables, using the transformation formula of the Riemann theta function on the Siegel upper half-space.
We prove the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture for sequences of subquadratic word growth. In particular, we show that the Liouville function has at least quadratically many sign patterns. We deduce the main theorem from a variant which bounds the correlations between multiplicative functions and sequences with subquadratically many sign patterns which occur with positive logarithmic density. This allows us to actually prove that our multiplicative functions do not locally correlate with sequences of subquadratic word growth. We also prove a conditional result which shows that if the $κ-1$-Fourier …
We show that the Vojta (or Hall-Lang) conjecture implies that the arboreal Galois representations in a 1-parameter family of quadratic polynomials are surjective if and only if they surject onto some finite and uniform quotient. As an application, we use the Vojta conjecture, our uniformity theorem over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$, and Hilbert's irreducibility theorem to prove that the prime divisors of many quadratic orbits have density zero.
We formulate the generalized Sarnak's Möbius disjointness conjecture for an arbitrary number field $K$, and prove a quantitative disjointness result between polynomial nilsequences $(Φ(g(n)Γ))_{n\in\mathbb{Z}^{D}}$ and aperiodic multiplicative functions on $\mathcal{O}_{K}$, the ring of integers of $K$. Here $D=[K\colon\mathbb{Q}]$, $X=G/Γ$ is a nilmanifold, $g\colon\mathbb{Z}^{D}\to G$ is a polynomial sequence, and $Φ\colon X\to \mathbb{C}$ is a Lipschitz function. The proof uses tools from multi-dimensional higher order Fourier analysis, multi-linear analysis, orbit properties on nilmanifold…
