Bicritical rational functions -- those with precisely two critical points -- include the well-studied families of unicritical polynomials and quadratic rational functions. In this article we lay out general foundations for studying arithmetic dynamical properties of bicritical rational functions, and prove new Galois-theoretic results for a family with special properties. We study the field of definition of the critical points, and give a normal form up to Möbius conjugacy over this field. As a corollary, we show that after a finite extension of the ground field, the arboreal Galois representation attached to a bicritical rational function injects into an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups. We then examine the family of quadratic $ϕ\in \mathbb{Q}(x)$ with critical points $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ such that $ϕ(γ_1) = γ_2$. Adapting methods of Odoni-Stoll in the polynomial case to rational functions, we show that the arboreal representation is surjective for an infinite subfamily.
In this paper we deal with composite rational functions having zeros and poles forming consecutive elements of an arithmetic progression. We also correct a result published earlier related to composite rational functions having a fixed number of zeros and poles.
The correspondence between right triangles with rational sides, triplets of rational squares in arithmetic succession and integral solutions of certain quadratic forms is well known. We show how this correspondence can be extended to the generalized notions of rational $θ$-triangles, rational squares occurring in arithmetic progressions and concordant forms. In our approach we establish one-to-one mappings to rational points on certain elliptic curves and examine in detail the role of solutions of the $θ$-congruent number problem and the concordant form problem associated with nontrivial torsi…
A reasonably complete theory of the approximation of an irrational by rational fractions whose numerators and denominators lie in prescribed arithmetic progressions is developed in this paper. Results are both, on the one hand, from a metrical and a non-metrical point of view and, on the other hand, from an asymptotic and also a uniform point of view. The principal novelty is a Khintchine type theorem for uniform approximation in this context. Some applications of this theory are also discussed.
It is shown that $c=-29/16$ is the unique rational number of smallest denominator, and the unique rational number of smallest numerator, for which the map $f_c(x) = x^2+c$ has a rational periodic point of period $3$. Several arithmetic conditions on the set of all such rational numbers $c$ and the rational orbits of $f_c(x)$ are proved. A graph on the numerators of the rational $3$-periodic points of maps $f_c$ is considered which reflects connections between solutions of norm equations from the cubic field of discriminant $-23$.
In 1972, Alniaçik proved that every strong Liouville number is mapped into the set of $U_m$-numbers, for any non-constant rational function with coefficients belonging to an $m$-degree number field. In this paper, we generalize this result by providing a larger class of Liouville numbers (which, in particular, contains the strong Liouville numbers) with this same property (this set is sharp is a certain sense).
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve given by the equation $y^2=f(x)$, where $f\in\Z[x]$ and $f$ hasn't multiple roots. We say that points $P_{i}=(x_{i}, y_{i})\in C(\Q)$ for $i=1,2,..., n$ are in arithmetic progression if the numbers $x_{i}$ for $i=1,2,..., n$ are in arithmetic progression. In this paper we show that there exists a polynomial $k\in\Z[t]$ with such a property that on the elliptic curve $\cal{E}: y^2=x^3+k(t)$ (defined over the field $\Q(t)$) we can find four points in arithmetic progression which are independent in the group of all $\Q(t)$-rational points on the curve $\cal{E}$. I…
The set ${1, 25, 49}$ is a 3-term collection of integers which forms an arithmetic progression of perfect squares. We view the set ${(1,1), (5,25), (7,49)}$ as a 3-term collection of rational points on the parabola $y=x^2$ whose $y$-coordinates form an arithmetic progression. In this exposition, we provide a generalization to 3-term arithmetic progressions on arbitrary conic sections $\mathcal C$ with respect to a linear rational map $\ell: \mathcal C \to \mathbb P^1$. We explain how this construction is related to rational points on the universal elliptic curve $Y^2 + 4XY + 4kY = X^3 + kX^2$ …
In this paper, we will define analogues of multiple zeta values by replacing the differential forms defining multiple zeta values with some $\mathbb{Q}$-rational differential forms on the Fermat curve $F_2$ of degree 2 and discuss their arithmetic properties. We also investigate a motivic structure of the motivic periods corresponding to our periods. However, in order to study them, the current theory for motivic zeta elements is insufficient, and it leads us to study the base extension of the space of the motivic periods $\mathcal{H}_4$ of level 4 and its Galois invariant part.
We discuss the problem of existence of rational curves on a certain del Pezzo surface from a computational point of view and suggest a computer algorithm implementing search. In particular, our computations reveal that the surface contains 920 rational curves with parametrizations of degree 8 and does not contain rational curves for a smaller degree.
We consider the reduction of an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers modulo primes in a given arithmetic progression and investigate how often the subgroup of rational points of this reduced curve is cyclic as a special case of Serre's Cyclicity Conjecture.
This is the first of two coupled papers estimating the mean values of multiplicative functions, of unknown support, on arithmetic progressions with large differences. Applications are made to the study of primes in arithmetic progression and to the Fourier coefficients of automorphic cusp forms.
This is the second of two coupled papers estimating the mean values of multiplicative functions, of unknown support, on arithmetic progressions with large differences. Applications are made to the study of primes in arithmetic progression and to the Fourier coefficients of automorphic cusp forms.
Properties of the shuffle product suggest the definition of a quadratic form with domain and values in formal power series over a field of characteristic 2. This quadratic form preserves rational (respectively algebraic) power series and its restriction to the affine subspace of series with constant term 1 is bijective. Conjecturally, this bijection restricts to a bijection of rational (respectively algebraic) formal power series.
These are lecture notes from a course in arithmetic dynamics given in Grenoble in June 2017. The main purpose of this text is to explain how arithmetic equidistribution theory can be used in the dynamics of rational maps on P^1. We first briefly introduce the basics of the iteration theory of rational maps on the projective line over C, as well as some elements of iteration theory over an arbitrary complete valued field and the construction of dynamically defined height functions for rational functions defined over \overline Q. The equidistribution of small points gives some original informati…
We investigate from a statistical perspective the arithmetic properties of the dynamics of polynomials of fixed degree and defined over the field of rational numbers. To start with, ordering their affine conjugacy classes by height, we show that their average number of rational preperiodic points is equal to zero, thereby proving a strong average version of the uniform boundedness conjecture of Morton and Silverman. Next, inspired by the analogy with the successive minima of a lattice we define the dynamical successive minima of a polynomial. Noting that these quantities are invariant under th…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$ of dimension $g$ such that the image of its associated absolute Galois representation $ρ_A$ is open in $\operatorname{GSp}_{2g}(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$. We investigate the arithmetic of the traces $a_{1, p}$ of the Frobenius at $p$ in $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ under $ρ_A$, modulo varying primes $p$. In particular, we obtain upper bounds for the counting function $\#\{p \leq x: a_{1, p} = t\}$ and we prove an Erdös-Kac type theorem for the number of prime factors of $a_{1, p}$. We also formulate a conjecture about the asymp…
We prove that both classical Chevalley-Warning-Ax and Tsen theorems hold for the blowing up of a quintic 3-fold along a line of multiplicity 3. Both proofs, which are of the same spirit than the original ones, involve the description of this blowing-up as a subvariety of a toric variety.
PhD dissertation consists in three lines of investigation involving rational elliptic surfaces, namely 1) a study of conic bundles on these surfaces; 2) an investigation of the possible intersection numbers of two sections and 3) a theorem regarding the set of fibers whose Mordell-Weil ranks are at least 3 units higher than the generic rank of the elliptic fibration.
We consider the problem of efficient computation in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 defined over a field whose characteristic is not 2. For curves with a rational Weierstrass point, fast explicit formulas are well known and widely available. Here we address the general case, in which we do not assume the existence of a rational Weierstrass point, using a balanced divisor approach.
Let $K$ be a finitely generated field of characteristic zero. We study, for fixed $m \geq 2$, the rational functions $ϕ$ defined over $K$ that have a $K$-orbit containing infinitely many distinct $m$th powers. For $m \geq 5$ we show the only such functions are those of the form $cx^j(ψ(x))^m$ with $ψ\in K(x)$, and for $m \leq 4$ we show the only additional cases are certain Lattès maps and four families of rational functions whose special properties appear not to have been studied before. With additional analysis, we show that the index set $\{n \geq 0 : ϕ^{n}(a) \in λ(\mathbb{P}^1(K))\}$ is a…
We develop techniques for using compactifications of Hurwitz spaces to study families of rational maps $\mathbb{P}^1\to\mathbb{P}^1$ defined by critical orbit relations. We apply these techniques in two settings: We show that the parameter space $\mathrm{Per}_{d,n}$ of degree-$d$ bicritical maps with a marked 4-periodic critical point is a $d^2$-punctured Riemann surface of genus $\frac{(d-1)(d-2)}{2}$. We also show that the parameter space $\mathrm{Per}_{2,5}$ of degree-2 rational maps with a marked 5-periodic critical point is a 10-punctured elliptic curve, and we identify its isomorphism cl…
Let $k$ be a number field, let $X$ be a Kummer variety over $k$, and let $δ$ be an odd integer. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for $X$. For example, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the $2$-primary Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of a zero-cycle of degree $δ$ on $X$ over $k$.
Let $f \colon X \dashrightarrow X$ be a dominant rational self-map of a smooth projective variety defined over $\overline{\mathbb Q}$. For each point $P\in X(\overline{\mathbb Q})$ whose forward $f$-orbit is well-defined, Silverman introduced the arithmetic degree $α_f(P)$, which measures the growth rate of the heights of the points $f^n(P)$. Kawaguchi and Silverman conjectured that $α_f(P)$ is well-defined and that, as $P$ varies, the set of values obtained by $α_f(P)$ is finite. Based on constructions of Bedford--Kim and McMullen, we give a counterexample to this conjecture when $X=\mathbb P…
Building on the works of S. Bochner on equivalence of modular relation with functional equation associated to the Dirichlet series, K. Chandrasekharan and R. Narasimhan obtained new equivalences between the functional equation and some arithmetical identities. Sister Ann M. Heath considered the functional equation in the Hawkins and Knopp context and showed its equivalence to two arithmetical identities associated with entire modular cusp integrals involving rational period functions for the full modular group. In this paper we use techniques of Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan and extend the re…
In this paper we study two functions $F(x)$ and $J(x)$, originally found by Herglotz in 1923 and later rediscovered and used by one of the authors in connection with the Kronecker limit formula for real quadratic fields. We discuss many interesting properties of these functions, including special values at rational or quadratic irrational arguments as rational linear combinations of dilogarithms and products of logarithms, functional equations coming from Hecke operators, and connections with Stark's conjecture. We also discuss connections with 1-cocycles for the modular group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,…
Let m be a positive integer and a,q two rational numbers. Denote by AP_m(a,q) the set of rational numbers d such that a,a+q,...,a+(m-1)q form an arithmetic progression in the Edwards curve E_d:x^2+y^2=1+d x^2 y^2. We study the set AP_m(a,q) and we parametrize it by the rational points of an algebraic curve.
Given a dominant rational self-map on a projective variety over a number field, we can define the arithmetic degree at a rational point. It is known that the arithmetic degree at any point is less than or equal to the first dynamical degree. In this article, we show that there are densely many $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-rational points with maximal arithmetic degree (i.e. whose arithmetic degree is equal to the first dynamical degree) for self-morphisms on projective varieties. For unirational varieties and abelian varieties, we show that there are densely many rational points with maximal arithme…
We show how the size of the Galois groups of iterates of a quadratic polynomial $f(x)$ can be parametrized by certain rational points on the curves $C_n:y^2=f^n(x)$ and their quadratic twists. To that end, we study the arithmetic of such curves over global and finite fields, translating key problems in the arithmetic of polynomial iteration into a geometric framework. This point of view has several dynamical applications. For instance, we establish a maximality theorem for the Galois groups of the fourth iterate of quadratic polynomials $x^2+c$, using techniques in the theory of rational point…
Let $k$ be a number field. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for Kummer varieties over $k$. For example, for any Kummer variety $X$ over $k$, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the ($2$-primary) Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for zero-cycles of any given odd degree on $X$ over $k$. We also obtain similar results for pr…
Let F : P^N --> P^N be a dominant rational map. The dynamical degree of F is the quantity d_F = lim (deg F^n)^(1/n). When F is defined over a number field, we define the arithmetic degree of an algebraic point P to be a_F(P) = limsup h(F^n(P))^(1/n) and the canonical height of P to be h_F(P) = limsup h(F^n(P))/n^k d_F^n for an appropriately chosen integer k = k_F. In this article we prove some elementary relations and make some deep conjectures relating d_F, a_F(P), and h_F(P). We prove our conjectures for monomial maps.
Let f : X --> X be a dominant rational map of a projective variety defined over a global field, let d_f be the dynamical degree of f, and let h_X be a Weil height on X relative to an ample divisor. We prove that h_X(f^n(P)) << (d_f + e)^n h_X(P), where the implied constant depends only on X, h_X, f, and e. As applications, we prove a fundamental inequality a_f(P) \le d_f for the upper arithmetic degree and we construct canonical heights for (nef) divisors. We conjecture that a_f(P) = d_f whenever the orbit of P is Zariski dense, and we describe some cases for which we can prove our conjecture.
We study the density of rational points on a higher-dimensional orbifold $(\mathbb{P}^{n-1},D)$ when $D$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor involving hyperplanes. This allows us to address a question of Tanimoto about whether the set of rational points on such an orbifold constitutes a thin set. Our approach relies on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to first study an asymptotic version of Waring's problem for mixed powers. In doing so we make crucial use of the recent resolution of the main conjecture in Vinogradov's mean value theorem, due to Bourgain-Demeter-Guth and Wooley.
We look for elliptic curves featuring rational points whose coordinates form two arithmetic progressions, one for each coordinate. A constructive method for creating such curves is shown, for lengths up to 5.
For a dominant rational self-map on a smooth projective variety defined over a number field, Kawaguchi and Silverman conjectured that the (first) dynamical degree is equal to the arithmetic degree at a rational point whose forward orbit is well-defined and Zariski dense. We prove this conjecture for surjective endomorphisms on smooth projective surfaces. For surjective endomorphisms on any smooth projective varieties, we show the existence of rational points whose arithmetic degrees are equal to the dynamical degree. Moreover, we prove that there exists a Zariski dense set of rational points h…
We study the arithmetic of division fields of semistable abelian varieties A over the rationals. The Galois group of the 2-division field of A is analyzed when the conductor is odd and squarefree. The irreducible semistable mod 2 representations of small conductor are determined under GRH. These results are used in "Paramodular abelian varieties of odd conductor," arXiv:1004.4699.
We consider the interplay of point counts, singular cohomology, étale cohomology, eigenvalues of the Frobenius and the Grothendieck ring of varieties for two families of varieties: spaces of rational maps and moduli spaces of marked, degree $d$ rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We deduce as special cases algebro-geometric and arithmetic refinements of topological computations of Segal, Cohen--Cohen--Mann--Milgram, Vassiliev and others.
Suppose that $f \colon X \dashrightarrow X$ is a dominant rational self-map of a smooth projective variety defined over ${\overline{\mathbf Q}}$. Kawaguchi and Silverman conjectured that if $P \in X({\overline{\mathbf Q}})$ is a point with well-defined forward orbit, then the growth rate of the height along the orbit exists, and coincides with the first dynamical degree $λ_1(f)$ of $f$ if the orbit of $P$ is Zariski dense in $X$. In this note, we extend the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture to the setting of orbits of higher-dimensional subvarieties of $X$. We begin by defining a set of arithmeti…
In this paper, we show the Hasse principle for the character group of a finitely generated field over the rational number field. By applying this result, we obtain an algebraic proof of unramified class field theory of arithmetical schemes.
For a dominant rational self-map on a smooth projective variety defined over a number field, Shu Kawaguchi and Joseph H. Silverman conjectured that the dynamical degree is equal to the arithmetic degree at a rational point whose forward orbit is well-defined and Zariski dense. We give some examples of self-maps on product varieties and rational points on them for which the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture holds.
Motivated by problems arising in the relative trace formula and arithmetic invariant theory we prove the existence of rational points on orbits arising from certain infinitesimal symmetric spaces. As an application, we prove analogous results for orbits in certain global reductive symmetric spaces.
Let $F=\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ be the field of rational functions with $\mathbb{F}_q$-coefficients, and $A=\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ be the subring of polynomials. Let $D$ be a division quaternion algebra over $F$ which is split at $1/T$. Given an $A$-order $Λ$ in $D$, we find an explicit finite set generating $Λ^\times$.
For any family of elliptic curves over the rational numbers with fixed $j$-invariant, we prove that the existence of a long sequence of rational points whose $x$-coordinates form a non-trivial arithmetic progression implies that the Mordell-Weil rank is large, and similarly for $y$-coordinates. We give applications related to uniform boundedness of ranks, conjectures by Bremner and Mohanty, and arithmetic statistics on elliptic curves. Our approach involves Nevanlinna theory as well as Rémond's quantitative extension of results of Faltings.
A Kloosterman refinement for function fields $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ is developed and used to establish the quantitative arithmetic of the set of rational points on a smooth complete intersection of two quadrics $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{n-1}_{K}$ , under the assumption that $q$ is odd and $n\geq 9$.
In an isomorphic copy of the ring of symmetric polynomials we study some families of polynomials which are indexed by rational weight vectors. These families include well known symmetric polynomials, such as the elementary, homogeneous, and power sum symmetric polynomials. We investigate properties of these families and focus on constructing their rational roots under a product induced by convolution. A direct application of the latter is to the description of the roots of certain multiplicative arithmetic functions (the core functions) under the convolution product.
We count algebraic points of bounded height and degree on the graphs of certain functions analytic on the unit disk, obtaining a bound which is polynomial in the degree and in the logarithm of the multiplicative height. We combine this work with p-adic methods to obtain a lower bound of the form $cD^{n/4 - \varepsilon}$ on the degree of the splitting field of $P^{\circ n}(z)=P^{\circ n}(α)$, where $P$ is a polynomial of degree $D\geq 2$ over a number field, $P^{\circ n}$ is its $n$-th iterate and $c$ depends effectively on $P, α$ and $\varepsilon$. Our $c$ is positive for each algebraic $α$ fo…
We give a description of pairs of complex rational functions $A$ and $U$ of degree at least two such that for every $d\geq 1$ the algebraic curve $A^{\circ d}(x)-U(y)=0$ has a factor of genus zero or one. In particular, we show that if $A$ is not a `generalized Lattès map', then this condition is satisfied if and only if there exists a rational function $V$ such that $U\circ V=A^{\circ l}$ for some $l\geq 1.$ We also prove a version of the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture, concerning intersections of orbits of points from $\mathbb P^1(K)$ under iterates of $A$ with the value set $U(\mathbb P^…
The $(u,v)$-Padé approximation to a function $f$ is the (unique, up to scaling) rational approximation $f(x) = P(x)/Q(x) + O(x^{u+v+1})$, where $P$ has degree $u$ and $Q$ has degree $v$. Motivated by recent work of Molin, Pazuki, and Rabarison, we study the arithmetic of the Padé approximants of the exponential polynomials. By viewing the approximants as certain Generalized Laguerre Polynomials, we determine the Galois groups of the diagonal approximants and prove some special cases of irreducibility.
Let $B$ be a simple CM abelian variety over a CM field $E$, $p$ a rational prime. Suppose that $B$ has potentially ordinary reduction above $p$ and is self-dual with root number $-1$. Under some further conditions, we prove the generic non-vanishing of (cyclotomic) $p$-adic heights on $B$ along anticyclotomic $\Z_{p}$-extensions of $E$. This provides evidence towards Schneider's conjecture on the non-vanishing of $p$-adic heights. For CM elliptic curves over $\Q$, the result was previously known as a consequence of work of Bertrand, Gross--Zagier and Rohrlich in the 1980s. Our proof is based o…
This paper surveys some applications of moduli theory to issues concerning the distribution of rational points on algebraic varieties. It will appear on the proceedings of the Fano Conference.
For a given number field $K$, we show that the ranks of nonsingular elliptic curves over $K$ are uniformly finitely bounded if and only if weak Mordell-Weil property holds in all(some) ultrpowers $^*K$ of $K$. Also we introduce Nonstandard Mordell-Weil property for $^*K$ considering each Mordell-Weil group as $^*Z$-module, where $^*Z$ is an ultrapower of $Z$, and we show that Nonstandard Mordell-Weil property is equivalent to weak Mordell-Weil property in $^*K$. In Appendix, we showed that it is possible to consider definable abelian groups as $^*Z$-modules in a saturated nonstandard rational …
This is a textbook on arithmetic geometry with special regard to unramified Brauer groups of algebraic varieties. The topics include Galois cohomology, Brauer groups, obstructions to stable rationality, arithmetic and geometry of quadrics, Weil restriction of scalars, algebraic tori, an example of a stably rational non-rational variety, Brauer-Manin obstruction. All material is split into locally trivial problems with detailed hints.
Let $k$ be a field, let $G$ be a reductive group, and let $V$ be a linear representation of $G$. Let $V//G = Spec(Sym(V^*))^G$ denote the geometric quotient and let $π: V \to V//G$ denote the quotient map. Arithmetic invariant theory studies the map $π$ on the level of $k$-rational points. In this article, which is a continuation of the results of our earlier paper "Arithmetic invariant theory", we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a rational element of $V//G$ to lie in the image of $π$, assuming that generic stabilizers are abelian. We illustrate the various scenarios that can o…
