Let $S$ be a semigroup. The elements $a,b\in S$ are called primarily conjugate if $a=xy$ and $b=yx$ for certain $x,y\in S$. The relation of conjugacy is defined as the transitive closure of the relation of primary conjugacy. In the case when $S$ is a monoid, denote by $G$ the group of units of $S$. Then the relation of $G$-conjugacy is defined by $a\sim_G b \iff a=g^{-1}bg$ for certain $g\in G$. We establish the structure of conjugacy classes for regular epigroups (i.e. semigroups such that some power of each element lies in a subgroup). As a corollary we obtain a criterion of conjugacy in terms of $G$-conjugacy for factorizable inverse epigroups. We show that our general conjugacy criteria easily lead to known and new conjugacy criteria for some specific semigroups, among which are the full transformation semigroup and the full inverse symmetric semigroup over a finite set, the linear analogues of these semigroups and the semigroup of finitary partial automatic transformations over a finite alphabet.
In a semigroup $S$ with fixed $c\in S$, one can construct a new semigroup $(S,\cdot_c)$ called a \emph{variant} by defining $x\cdot_c y:=xcy$. Elements $a,b\in S$ are \emph{primarily conjugate} if there exist $x,y\in S^1$ such that $a=xy, b=yx$. This coincides with the usual conjugacy in groups, but is not transitive in general semigroups. Araújo \emph{et al.} proved that transitivity holds in a variety $\mathcal{W}$ of epigroups containing all completely regular semigroups and their variants, and asked if transitivity holds for all variants of semigroups in $\mathcal{W}$. We answer this affir…
We discuss the time complexity of the word and conjugacy search problems for free products $G = A \star_C B$ of groups $A$ and $B$ with amalgamation over a subgroup $C$. We stratify the set of elements of $G$ with respect to the complexity of the word and conjugacy problems and show that for the generic stratum the conjugacy search problem is decidable under some reasonable assumptions about groups $A,B,C$.
Let $G$ be a finite group, $p$ a prime, and $IBr_p(G)$ the set of irreducible $p$-Brauer characters of $G$. Let $\bar e_p(G)$ be the largest integer such that $p^{\bar e_p(G)}$ divides $χ(1)$ for some $χ\in IBr_p(G)$. We show that $|G:O_p(G)|_p \leq p^{k \bar e_p(G)}$ for an explicitly given constant $k$. We also study the analogous problem for the $p$-parts of the conjugacy class sizes of $p$-regular elements of finite groups.
We study the conjugacy problem in the automorphism group $Aut(T)$ of a regular rooted tree $T$ and in its subgroup $FAut(T)$ of finite-state automorphisms. We show that under the contracting condition and the finiteness of what we call the orbit-signalizer, two finite-state automorphisms are conjugate in $Aut(T)$ if and only if they are conjugate in $FAut(T)$, and that this problem is decidable. We prove that both these conditions are satisfied by bounded automorphisms and establish that the (simultaneous) conjugacy problem in the group of bounded automata is decidable.
For a simple algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field, we study products of normal subsets. For this we mark the nodes of the Dynkin diagram of $G$. We use two types of labels, a binary marking and a labeling with non-negative integers. The first is used to recognize large conjugacy classes which appear in a product of two conjugacy classes while the second is used to keep track of multiplicities of regular diagrams. In particular, we formulate sufficient conditions in terms of marked diagrams, for a product of normal subsets in $G$ to contain regular semisimple elements.
We determine when two almost automorphisms of a regular tree are conjugate. This is done by combining the classification of conjugacy classes in the automorphism group of a level-homogeneous tree by Gawron, Nekrashevych and Sushchansky and the solution of the conjugacy problem in Thompson's $V$ by Belk and Matucci. We also analyze dynamics of tree almost automorphisms.
Using generating functions, we enumerate regular semisimple conjugacy classes in the finite classical groups. For the general linear, unitary, and symplectic groups this gives a different approach to known results; for the special orthogonal groups the results are new.
Let $G$ be a finite group of order divisible by a prime $p$. The number of $p$-regular and $p'$-regular conjugacy classes of $G$ is at least $2\sqrt{p-1}$. Also, the number of $p$-rational and $p'$-rational irreducible characters of $G$ is at least $2\sqrt{p-1}$. Along the way we prove a uniform lower bound for the number of $p$-regular classes in a finite simple group of Lie type in terms of its rank and size of the underlying field.
The well-known Landau's theorem states that, for any positive integer $k$, there are finitely many isomorphism classes of finite groups with exactly $k$ (conjugacy) classes. We study variations of this theorem for $p$-regular classes as well as $p$-singular classes. We prove several results showing that the structure of a finite group is strongly restricted by the number of $p$-regular classes or the number of $p$-singular classes of the group. In particular, if $G$ is a finite group with $O_p(G)=1$ then $|G/F(G)|_{p'}$ is bounded in terms of the number of $p$-regular classes of $G$. However, …

Let $\H^{n+1}$ denote the $n + 1$-dimensional (real) hyperbolic space. Let $\s^{n}$ denote the conformal boundary of the hyperbolic space. The group of conformal diffeomorphisms of $\s^n$ is denoted by $M (n)$. Let $M_o (n)$ be its identity component which consists of all orientation-preserving elements in $M (n)$. The conjugacy classification of isometries in $M_o (n)$ depends on the conjugacy of $T$ and $T^{-1}$ in $M_o (n)$. For an element $T$ in $M (n)$, $T$ and $T^{-1}$ are conjugate in $M (n)$, but they may not be conjugate in $M_o (n)$. In the literature, $T$ is called real if $T$ is co…
Let $G$ be an algebraic group defined over a field $k$. We call $g\in G$ {\bf real} if $g$ is conjugate to $g^{-1}$ and $g\in G(k)$ as {\bf $k$-real} if $g$ is real in $G(k)$. An element $g\in G$ is {\bf strongly real} if $\exists h\in G$, $h^{2}=1$ (i.e. $h$ is an {\bf involution}) such that $hgh^{-1}=g^{-1}$. Clearly, strongly real elements are real and are product of two involutions. Let $G$ be a connected adjoint semisimple group over a perfect field $k$, with -1 in the Weyl group. We prove that any strongly regular $k$-real element in $G(k)$ is strongly $k$-real (i.e. is a product of two …
In this note, we formulate an observation that "almost all" irreducible ordinary characters of finite groups of Lie type remain irreducible when restricted to the derived subgroups. To see this, key ingredients are some asymptotic results for conjugacy classes of finite groups of Lie type and strongly regular semisimple elements in dual groups.
Let k(B_0) and l(B_0) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p-Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B_0 of a finite group G. We prove that, if k(B_0)-l(B_0)=1, then l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p=11 and l(B_0)=9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p-elements are conjugate, l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p = 11 and G/O_{p'}(G) =11^2:SL(2,5). These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with a few characters. We propose that, in every finite group G of order divisible by p, the number of irreducible Brauer charact…
When n is odd, consider the finite general linear and unitary groups of rank n, extended by the inverse transpose automorphism. There are elements in the extended groups which square to a regular unipotent element, and we evaluate the values of irreducible characters of the extended groups on these elements. Several intermediate results on real conjugacy classes and real-valued characters of these groups are obtained along the way.
Let $G$ be a countable group. We introduce several equivalence relations on the set ${\rm Sub}(G)$ of subgroups of $G$, defined by properties of the quasi-regular representations $λ_{G/H}$ associated to $H\in {\rm Sub}(G)$ and compare them to the relation of $G$-conjugacy of subgroups. We define a class ${\rm Sub}_{\rm sg}(G)$ of subgroups (these are subgroups with a certain spectral gap property) and show that they are rigid, in the sense that the equivalence class of $H\in {\rm Sub}_{\rm sg}(G)$ for any one of the above equivalence relations coincides with the $G$-conjugacy class of $H$. Nex…
A regular set of words is ($k$-)locally testable if membership of a word in the set is determined by the nature of its subwords of some bounded length $k$. In this article we study groups for which the set of all geodesic words with respect to some generating set is ($k$-)locally testable, and we call such groups ($k$-)locally testable. We show that a group is \klt{1} if and only if it is free abelian. We show that the class of ($k$-)locally testable groups is closed under taking finite direct products. We show also that a locally testable group has finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion e…
We show that the number of conjugacy classes of intersections $A\cap B^g$, for fixed finitely generated subgroups $A, B<F$ of a free group, is bounded above in terms of the ranks of $A$ and $B$; this confirms an intuition of Walter Neumann. This result was previously known only in the case where $A$ or $B$ is cyclic by the $w$-cycles theorem of Helfer and Wise and, independently, Louder and Wilton. In order to prove our main theorem, we introduce new results regarding the structure of fibre products of finite graphs. We work with a generalised definition of graph immersions so that our results…
We answer a conjecture of Bauer, Catanese and Grunewald showing that all finite simple groups other than the alternating group of degree 5 admit unmixed Beauville structures. We also consider an analog of the result for simple algebraic groups which depends on some upper bounds for character values of regular semisimple elements in finite groups of Lie type and obtain definitive results about the variety of triples in semisimple regular classes with product 1. Finally, we prove that any finite simple group contains two conjugacy classes C,D such that any pair of elements in C x D generates the…
