Let $H$ be a separable real Hilbert space. Denote by ${\mathcal G}_{\infty}(H)$ the Grassmannian consisting of closed subspaces with infinite dimension and codimension. This Grassmannian is partially ordered by the inclusion relation. We show that every order preserving transformation of ${\mathcal G}_{\infty}(H)$ can be extended to an automorphism of the lattice of closed subspaces of $H$. It follows from Mackey's result \cite{Mackey} that automorphisms of this lattice are induced by invertible bounded linear operators.
We show that the transformations of Grassmannians (of complex Hilbert spaces) induced by linear or conjugate-linear isometries can be characterized as transformations preserving some of principal angles (corresponding to the orthogonality, adjacency and ortho-adjacency relations).
Let $H$ be a separable complex Hilbert space. Denote by ${\mathcal G}_{\infty}(H)$ the Grassmannian consisting of closed linear subspaces with infinite dimension and codimension. This Grassmannian is partially ordered by the inclusion relation. We show that every continuous order preserving bijective transformation of ${\mathcal G}_{\infty}(H)$ is induced by an invertible bounded semi-linear operator.
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a sequence of vectors in a Hilbert space that achieves equality in the Welch bound and so has minimal coherence. More generally, an equichordal tight fusion frame (ECTFF) is a sequence of equi-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space that achieves equality in Conway, Hardin and Sloane's simplex bound. Every ECTFF is a type of optimal Grassmannian code, that is, an optimal packing of equi-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space. We construct ECTFFs by exploiting new relationships between known ETFs. Harmonic ETFs equate to difference sets for finite abelian …
We consider the standard quantum logic ${\mathcal L}(H)$ associated to a complex Hilbert space $H$, i.e. the lattice of closed subspaces of $H$ together with the orthogonal complementation. The orthogonality and compatibility relations are defined for any logic. In the standard quantum logic, they have a simple interpretation in terms of operator theory. For example, two closed subspaces (propositions in the logic ${\mathcal L}(H)$) are compatible if and only if the projections on these subspaces commute. We present both classical and more resent results on transformations of ${\mathcal L}(H)$…
Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ be the Grassmannian formed by $k$-dimensional subspaces of $H$. Suppose that $\dim H>2k$ and $f$ is an orthogonality preserving injective transformation of ${\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$, i.e. for any orthogonal $X,Y\in {\mathcal G}_{k}(H)$ the images $f(X),f(Y)$ are orthogonal. If $\dim H=n$ is finite, then $n=mk+i$ for some integers $m\ge 2$ and $i\in \{0,1,\dots,k-1\}$ (for $i=0$ we have $m\ge 3$). We show that $f$ is a bijection induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator if $i\in \{0,1,2,3\}$ or $m\ge i+1\ge 5$; in particular, the …
We consider homoclinic solutions for Hamiltonian systems in symplectic Hilbert spaces and generalise spectral flow formulas that were proved by Pejsachowicz and the author in finite dimensions some years ago. Roughly speaking, our main theorem relates the spectra of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems under homoclinic boundary conditions to intersections of their stable and unstable spaces. Our proof has some interest in its own. Firstly, we extend a celebrated theorem by Cappell, Lee and Miller about the classical Maslov index in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ to symplectic Hilbert spaces. Secondly, …
In this paper we present results concerning orthogonality in Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Moreover, for a $C^*$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$, we prove theorems concerning the multi-$\mathscr{A}$-linearity and its preservation by $\mathscr{A}$-linear operators. New version of solution of the orthogonality equation on Hilbert $C^*$-modules and mappings preserving orthogonality are also investigated.
In this paper we characterize the surjective linear variation norm isometries on JB-algebras. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Consequently, we characterize the Hilbert's metric isometries on cones in JB-algebras.
In this paper first we give a partial answer to a question of L. Molnár and W. Timmermann. Namely, we will describe those linear (not necessarily bijective) transformations on the set of self-adjoint matrices which preserve a unitarily invariant norm of the commutator. After that we will characterize those (not necessarily linear or bijective) maps on the set of self-adjoint rank-one projections acting on a two-dimensional complex Hilbert space which leave the latter quantity invariant. Finally, this result will be applied in order to obtain a description of such bijective preservers on the un…
In this paper first we describe all (not necessarily linear or bijective) transformations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $2\leq d<\infty$ which preserve the area of parallelograms spanned by any two vectors. We also characterize those (not necessarily linear) bijections on an arbitrary real Hilbert space that preserve the latter quantity. This answers a question raised by Rassias and Wagner, and it can be considered as a variant of the famous Wigner theorem on real Hilbert spaces which plays an important role in quantum mechanics. As a consequence, we solve a preserver problem of Molnár and Timmermann…
We introduce a notion of approximate orthogonality preserving mappings between Hilbert $C^*$-modules. We define the concept of $(δ, \varepsilon)$-orthogonality preserving mapping and give some sufficient conditions for a linear mapping to be $(δ, \varepsilon)$-orthogonality preserving. In particular, if $\mathscr{E}$ is a full Hilbert $\mathscr{A}$-module with $\mathbb{K}(\mathscr{H})\subseteq \mathscr{A} \subseteq \mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ and $T, S:\mathscr{E}\longrightarrow \mathscr{E}$ are two linear mappings satisfying $\big|\langle Sx, Sy\rangle\big| = \|S\|^2\,|\langle x, y\rangle|$ for …
We determine the structure of all bijections on the cone of positive semidefinite operators which preserve the quantum $f$-divergence for an arbitrary strictly convex function $f$ defined on the positive halfline. It turns out that any such transformation is implemented by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator.
Wigner's classical theorem on symmetry transformations plays a fundamental role in quantum mechanics. It can be formulated, for example, in the following way: Every bijective transformation on the set L of all 1-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space H which preserves the angle between the elements of L is induced by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator on H. The aim of this paper is to extend Wigner's result from the 1-dimensional case to the case of n-dimensional subspaces of H with n fixed.

In this paper we consider the cone of all positive, bounded operators acting on an infinite dimensional, complex Hilbert space, and examine bijective maps that preserve absolute continuity in both directions. It turns out that these maps are exactly those that preserve singularity in both directions. Moreover, in some weak sense, such maps are always induced by bounded, invertible, linear- or conjugate linear operators of the underlying Hilbert space. Our result gives a possible generalization of a recent theorem of Molnar which characterizes maps on the positive cone that preserve the Lebesgu…

We study translation preserving operators, that is operators commuting with translations by a closed subgroup of a locally compact abelian group. We show that there is a one to one correspondence between these operators and range operators. Furthermore, we obtain a necessary condition for a translation preserving operator to be Hilbert Schmidt or of finite trace in terms of its range operator.
A mapping $f: {\mathcal M} \to {\mathcal N}$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules approximately preserves the inner product if \[\|< f(x), f(y)> - < x, y> \| \leq ϕ(x, y),\] for an appropriate control function $ϕ(x,y)$ and all $x, y \in {\mathcal M}$. In this paper, we extend some results concerning the stability of the orthogonality equation to the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules on more general restricted domains. In particular, we investigate some asymptotic behavior and the Hyers--Ulam--Rassias stability of the orthogonality equation.
Coordinate formalism on Hilbert manifolds developed in Kryukov is reviewed. The results of Kryukov are applied to the simpliest case of a Hilbert manifold: the abstract Hilbert space. In particular, functional transformations preserving properties of various linear operators on Hilbert spaces are found. Any generalized solution of an arbitrary linear differential equation with constant coefficients is shown to be related to a smooth solution by a (functional) coordinate transformation. The results also suggest a way of using generalized functions to solve nonlinear problems on Hilbert spaces.
Let H be a complex Hilbert space, B(H) and S(H) be the spaces of all bounded operators and all self-adjoint operators on H, respectively. We give the concrete forms of the maps on B(H) and also S(H) which preserve the spectrum of certain products of operators.
The Grassmannian model represents harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces by families of shift-invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space. We impose a natural symmetry condition on the shift-invariant subspaces that corresponds to considering an important class of harmonic maps into symmetric and $k$-symmetric spaces. In particular, we obtain new general forms for such symmetric shift-invariant subspaces and for the corresponding extended solutions.
Let H and K be infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, while B(H) and B(K) denote the algebras of all linear bounded operators on H and K, respectively. We characterize the forms of additive mappings from B(H) into B(K) that preserve the nonzero idempotency of either Jordan products of operators or usual products of operators in both directions.
In this paper we consider power means of positive Hilbert space operators both in the conventional and in the Kubo-Ando senses. We describe the corresponding isomorphisms (bijective transformations respecting those means as binary operations) on positive definite cones and on positive semidefinite cones in operator algebras. We also investigate the question when those two sorts of power means can be transformed into each other.
