We study the boundary L_t of the Milnor fiber for the non-isolated singularities in C^3 with equation z^m - g(x,y) = 0 where g(x,y) is a non-reduced plane curve germ. We give a complete proof that L_t is a Waldhausen graph manifold and we provide the tools to construct its plumbing graph. As an example, we give the plumbing graph associated to the germs z^2 - (x^2 - y^3)y^l = 0 with l an interger >1. We prove that the boundary of the Milnor fiber is a Waldhausen manifold new in complex geometry, as it cannot be the boundary of a normal surface singularity.
In this survey, we remind some fibrations structure theorems (also called Milnor's fibrations) recently proved in the real and complex case, in the local and global settings. We give several Poincaré-Hopf type formulae which relates the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of these fibers (also called Milnor's fibers) and indices (topological degree) of appropriated vector fields defined on spheres of radii small or big enough.
We study function germs on toric varieties which are nondegenerate for their Newton diagram. We express their motivic Milnor fibre in terms of their Newton diagram. We extend a formula for the motivic nearby fibre to the case of a toroidal degeneration. We illustrate this by some examples.
In a recent paper, Dimca and Nemethi pose the problem of finding a homogeneous polynomial f such that the homology of the complement of the hypersurface defined by f is torsion-free, but the homology of the Milnor fiber of f has torsion. We prove that this is indeed possible, and show by construction that, for each prime p, there is a polynomial with p-torsion in the homology of the Milnor fiber. The techniques make use of properties of characteristic varieties of hyperplane arrangements.
Let $(\bf {V,0})\subset (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ be a germ of a complex hypersurface and let $f: (\mathbb{C}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ be a germ of a finite holomorphic mapping. If germs $(\bf {V,0})$ and ${\bf W}:=(F^{-1}(\bf{ V})),0)$ are irreducible and with isolated singularities, then $$μ(F^{-1}(\bf{ V}))\ge μ(\bf {V}),$$ where $μ$ denotes the Milnor number.
We give formulas for the image Milnor number of a weighted-homogeneous map-germ $(\mathbb{C}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$, for $n=4$ and $5$, in terms of weights and degrees. Our expressions are obtained by a purely interpolative method, applied to a result by Ohmoto. We use our approach to recover the formulas for $n=2$ and $3$ due to Mond and Ohmoto, respectively. For $n\geq 6$, the method is valid as long as certain multi-singularity conjecture holds.
In this note we study a problem of A'Campo about the minimal non-zero difference between the Milnor numbers of a germ of plane curve and one of its deformation.
By calculating the equivariant mixed Hodge numbers of motivic Milnor fibers introduced by Denef-Loeser, we obtain explicit formulas for the Jordan normal forms of Milnor monodromies. The numbers of the Jordan blocks will be described by the Newton polyhedron of the polynomial.
We discuss and prove a number of cohomological results for Milnor fibers, real links, and complex links of local complete intersections with singularities of arbitrary dimension.
Splice type surface singularities, introduced in 2002 by Neumann and Wahl, provide all examples known so far of integral homology spheres which appear as links of complex isolated complete intersections of dimension two. They are determined, up to a form of equisingularity, by decorated trees called splice diagrams. In 2005, Neumann and Wahl formulated their Milnor fiber conjecture, stating that any choice of an internal edge of a splice diagram determines a special kind of decomposition into pieces of the Milnor fibers of the associated singularities. These pieces are constructed from the Mil…
We describe a general setting where the monodromy action on the first cohomology group of the Milnor fiber of a hyperplane arrangement is the identity.
We define motivic Milnor fiber of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras of dimension three using the method of Denef and Loeser of motivic integration. It is proved by Nicaise and Sebag that the topological Euler characteristic of the motivic Milnor fiber is equal to the Euler characteristic of the étale cohomology of the analytic Milnor fiber. We prove that the value of Behrend function on the germ moduli space determined by $L$ is equal to the Euler characteristic of the analytic Milnor fiber. Thus we prove that Behrend function depends only on the formal neighborhood of the moduli space.
We study Milnor fibers of complexified real line arrangements. We give a new algorithm computing monodromy eigenspaces of the first cohomology. The algorithm is based on the description of minimal CW-complexes homotopic to the complements, and uses the real figure, that is, the adjacency relations of chambers. It enables us to generalize a vanishing result of Libgober, give new upper-bounds and characterize the $A_3$-arrangement in terms of non-triviality of Milnor monodromy.
We constructed the analytic Milnor fiber is a non-archimedean model of the classical topological Milnor fibration. In the present paper, we describe the homotopy type of the analytic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model, and we show that its singular cohomology coincides with the weight zero part of the mixed Hodge structure on the nearby cohomology. We give a similar expression for Denef and Loeser's motivic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model.
The complement of a hyperplane arrangement in the complex projective space is known to be formal. We prove the global Milnor fiber associated to the homogeneous polynomial defining the arrangement may not even be 1-formal, by giving an example in dimension 2.
In this note, we prove the connectivity of the Milnor fiber for a mixed polynomial $f(\mathbf z,\bar{\mathbf z})$, assuming the existence of a sequence of smooth points of $f^{-1}(0)$ converging to the origin. This result gives also a another proof for the connectivity of the Milnor fiber of a non-reduced complex analytic function which is proved by A. Dimca
We provide a bouquet decomposition for the determinantal Milnor fiber of an essentially isolated determinantal singularity of arbitrary type $(m,n,t)$. The building blocks in the decomposition are (suspensions of) hyperplane sections of the associated generic determinantal variety $M_{m,n}^t$ in general position off the origin.
We give in this work an explicit combinatorial algorithm for the description of the Milnor fiber of a Newton non degenerate surface singularity as a graph manifold. This is based on a previous work by the author describing a general method for the computation of the boundary of the Milnor fiber of any reduced non isolated singularity of complex surface.
Using a recent result by S. Papadima and A. Suciu, we show that the equivariant Poincaré-Deligne polynomial of the Milnor fiber of a projective line arrangement having only double and triple points is combinatorially determined.
We find a recursive formula for the motivic Milnor fiber of an irreducible plane curve, using the notions of a truncation and derived curve. We then apply natural transformations to obtain a similar recursion for the Hodge-theoretic spectrum.
We give a description of the Milnor fiber and the monodromy of a singularity of the form f+zg = 0 where f and g define plane curves and have no common components. The description depends only on the topological type of the two plane curve germs defined by f and g. In particular, this gives a description of the boundary of the Milnor fiber. As a corollary, we give a simple formula for the monodromy zeta function and the Euler characteristic of the fiber.
We compute the motivic Milnor fiber of a complex plane curve singularity in an inductive and combinatoric way using the extended simplified resolution graph. The method introduced in this article has a consequence that one can study the Hodge-Steenbrink spectrum of such a singularity in terms of that of a quasi-homogeneous singularity.
This brief survey of some singularity invariants related to Milnor fibers should serve as a quick guide to references. We attempt to place things into a wide geometric context while leaving technicalities aside. We focus on relations among different invariants and on the practical aspect of computing them.
Let f and g be holomorphic function-germs vanishing at the origin of a complex analytic germ of dimension three. Suppose that they have no common irreducible component and that the real analytic map-germ given by the multiplication of f by the conjugate of g has an isolated critical value at 0. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the real analytic map-germ to have a Milnor fibration and we prove that in this case the boundary of its Milnor fibre is a Waldhausen manifold. As an intermediate milestone we describe geometrically the Milnor fibre of map-germs given by the multiplication…
In this note, we provide a quick introduction to the study of the Milnor fibration via the derived category and perverse sheaves. This is primarily a dictionary for translating from the standard topological setting to the derived category and/or the Abelian category of perverse sheaves.
We show how formal and rigid geometry can be used in the theory of complex singularities, and in particular in the study of the Milnor fibration and the motivic zeta function. We introduce the so-called analytic Milnor fiber associated to the germ of a morphism f from a smooth complex algebraic variety X to the affine line. This analytic Milnor fiber is a smooth rigid variety over the field of Laurent series C((t)). Its etale cohomology coincides with the singular cohomology of the classical topological Milnor fiber of f; the monodromy transformation is given by the Galois action. Moreover, th…
We study the Jordan normal forms of the local and global monodromies over complete intersection subvarieties of $C^n$ by using the theory of motivic Milnor fibers. The results will be explicitly described by the mixed volumes of the faces of Newton polyhedrons.
In this article we study the topology of a family of real analytic germs $F \colon (\mathbb{C}^3,0) \to (\mathbb{C},0)$ with isolated critical point at 0, given by $F(x,y,z)=f(x,y)\bar{g(x,y)}+z^r$, where $f$ and $g$ are holomorphic, $r \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ and $r \geq 2$. We describe the link $L_F$ as a graph manifold using its natural open book decomposition, related to the Milnor fibration of the map-germ $f \bar{g}$ and the description of its monodromy as a quasi-periodic diffeomorphism through its Nielsen invariants. Furthermore, such a germ $F$ gives rise to a Milnor fibration $\frac{F}{|F|…
This note is the observation that a simple combination of known results shows that the usual analytic invariants of a finitely determined multi-germ $f\colon (\mathbb{C}^2,S)\to(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$ ---namely the image Milnor number $μ_I$, the number of crosscaps and triple points, $C$ and $T$, and the Milnor number $μ(Σ)$ of the curve of double points in the target--- depend only on the embedded topological type of the image of $f$. As a consequence one obtains the topological invariance of the sign-refined Smale invariant for immersions $j\colon S^3\looparrowright S^5$ associated to finitely det…
Let $f$ be a germ of complex analytic function at $({\mathbf{C}}^{d+1}, 0)$ such that its zero level defines an irreducible germ of quasi-ordinary hypersurface $(S,0)$. We describe the motivic Igusa zeta function, the motivic Milnor fibre and the Hodge-Steenbrink spectrum of $f$ at 0 in terms of topological invariants of the quasi-ordinary hypersurface $(S,0)$.
We give a recursive formula, expressed in terms of the characteristic tuples, for the Betti numbers of the boundary of the Milnor fiber of an irreducible quasi-ordinary surface. The singular locus of the surface consists of two components, and for each component we introduce a sequence of increasingly simpler surfaces. Our recursion depends on a detailed comparison of these two sequences. We indicate how we expect pieces of these associated surfaces to glue together to reconstruct the Milnor fiber and its boundary.
We note that Theorem 5.4 of the paper ``Characteristic cycles of perverse sheaves and Milnor fibers" (by P. Nang and K. Takeuchi, published online in Math. Zeitschrift, October 15, 2004) holds for "any" non-zero complex number $a$.
We prove that every map-germ ${f \bar g}: (\C^n,\0) {\to}(\C,0)$ with an isolated critical value at 0 has the Thom $a_{f \bar g}$-property. This extends Hironaka's theorem for holomorphic mappings to the case of map-germs $f \bar g$ and it implies that every such map-germ has a Milnor-Lê fibration defined on a Milnor tube. One thus has a locally trivial fibration $ϕ: \mathbb S_\e \setminus K \to \mathbb S^1$ for every sufficiently small sphere around $\0$, where $K$ is the link of $f \bar g$ and in a neighbourhood of $K$ the projection map $ϕ$ is given by $f \bar g / | f \bar g|$.
As is well-known, the homology groups of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement are torsion-free. Nevertheless, as we showed in a recent paper [arXiv:1209.3414] the homology groups of the Milnor fiber of such an arrangement can have non-trivial integer torsion. We give here a brief account of the techniques that go into proving this result, outline some of its applications, and indicate some further questions that it brings to light.
We put forward in this paper a uniform narrative that weaves together several variants of Hrushovski-Kazhdan style integral, and describe how it can facilitate the understanding of the Denef-Loeser motivic Milnor fiber and closely related objects. Our study focuses on the so-called "nonarchimedean Milnor fiber" that was introduced by Hrushovski and Loeser, and our thesis is that it is a richer embodiment of the underlying philosophy of the Milnor construction. The said narrative is first developed in the more natural complex environment, and is then extended to the real one via descent. In the…
We discuss combinatorial invariance of the betti numbers of the Milnor fiber for arrangements of lines with points of multiplicity at most three and describe a link between this problem and enumeration of solutions of the Catalan equation over function field in the case when its coefficients are products of linear forms and the equation defines an elliptic curve.
In this note we determine the Bernstein-Sato polynomial $b_Q(s)$ of a generic central arrangement $Q=\prod_{i=1}^kH_i$ of hyperplanes. We establish a connection between the roots of $b_Q(s)$ and the degrees of the generators for the top cohomology of the corresponding Milnor fiber. This connection holds for all homogeneous polynomials. We also introduce certain subschemes of the arrangement determined by the roots of $b_Q(s)$.
In this note we consider the Milnor fiber $F$ associated to a reduced projective plane curve $C$. A computational approach for the determination of the characteristic polynomial of the monodromy action on the first cohomology group of $F$, also known as the Alexander polynomial of the curve $C$, is presented. This leads to an effective algorithm to detect all the monodromy eigenvalues and, in many cases, explicit bases for the monodromy eigenspaces in terms of polynomial differential forms.
We propose a new sheaf-theoretical method for the calculation of the monodromy zeta functions of Milnor fibrations. As an application, classical formulas of Kushnirenko and Varchenko etc. concerning polynomials on $\CC^n$ will be generalized to polynomial functions on any toric variety.
We describe a new relation between the topology of hyperplane arrangements, Milnor fibers and global polar curves, via the affine Lefschetz theory developped by A. Némethi. In particular, we improve some results due to Orlik and Terao (see Math. Ann. 301(1995)) and complete/clarify a proof by Randell concerning the minimality of hyperplane arrangements (see math.AT/0011101).
We prove that the mod $2$ Betti numbers of double coverings of a complex hyperplane arrangement complement are combinatorially determined. The proof is based on a relation between the mod $2$ Aomoto complex and the transfer long exact sequence. Applying the above result to the icosidodecahedral arrangement ($16$ planes in the three dimensional space related to the icosidodecahedron), we conclude that the first homology of the Milnor fiber has non-trivial $2$-torsion.
We analyze the monodromy action, over the rationals, on the first homology group of the Milnor fiber, for arbitrary subarrangements of Coxeter arrangements. We propose a combinatorial formula for the monodromy action, involving Aomoto complexes in positive characteristic. We verify the formula, in cases A, B and D.
Through the study of Morse theory on the associated Milnor fiber, we show that complex hyperplane arrangement complements are minimal. That is, the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement has the homotopy type of a CW complex in which the number of p-cells equals the p-th betti number.
We say that a complex analytic space, $X$, is an intersection cohomology manifold if and only if the shifted constant sheaf on $X$ is isomorphic to intersection cohomology; this is quickly seen to be equivalent to $X$ being a homology manifold. Given an analytic function $f$ on an intersection cohomology manifold, we describe a simple relation between $V(f)$ being an intersection cohomology manifold and the vanishing cycle Milnor monodromy of $f$. We then describe how the Sebastiani-Thom isomorphism allows us to easily produce intersection cohomology manifolds with arbitrary singular sets. Fin…
Let f be an isolated plane curve singularity with Milnor fiber of genus at least 5. For all such f, we give (a) an intrinsic description of the geometric monodromy group that does not invoke the notion of the versal deformation space, and (b) an easy criterion to decide if a given simple closed curve in the Milnor fiber is a vanishing cycle or not. With the lone exception of singularities of type $A_n$ and $D_n$, we find that both are determined completely by a canonical framing of the Milnor fiber induced by the Hamiltonian vector field associated to f. As a corollary we answer a question of …
We prove that for any germ of complex analytic set in $\CC^n$ there exists a hypersurface singularity whose Milnor fibration has trivial geometric monodromy and fibre homotopic to the complement of the germ of complex analytic set. As an application we show an example of a quasi-homogeneous hypersurface singularity, with trivial geometric monodromy and simply connected and non-formal Milnor fibre.
