We consider versions of Malliavin calculus on path spaces of compact manifolds with diffusion measures, defining Gross-Sobolev spaces of differentiable functions and proving their intertwining with solution maps, I, of certain stochastic differential equations. This is shown to shed light on fundamental uniqueness questions for this calculus including uniqueness of the closed derivative operator $d$ and Markov uniqueness of the associated Dirichlet form. A continuity result for the divergence operator by Kree and Kree is extended to this situation. The regularity of conditional expectations of smooth functionals of classical Wiener space, given I, is considered and shown to have strong implications for these questions. A major role is played by the (possibly sub-Riemannian) connections induced by stochastic differential equations: Damped Markovian connections are used for the covariant derivatives.
We prove a Kodaira-Hodge decomposition on differential 1-forms on the space of non-smooth paths over a Riemannian manifold, allowing us to define the corresponding first cohomology group. This uses the Itô map of a Brownian system and damped stochastic parallel translation.
We extend some results about Föllmer's pathwise Itô calculus that have only been derived for continuous paths to càdlàg paths with quadratic variation. We study some fundamental properties of pathwise Itô integrals with respect to càdlàg integrators, especially associativity and the integration by parts formula. Moreover, we study integral equations with respect to pathwise Itô integrals. We prove that some classes of integral equations, which can be explicitly solved in the usual stochastic calculus, can also be solved within the framework of Föllmer's calculus.
The solution of rough differential equation, driven by the Itô signature of a continuous local martingale, exists uniquely a.s. when the vector field is Lip(β) for β> 1, and coincides a.s. with the Itô signature of the solution of parallel stochastic differential equation. Moreover, the Itô solution can be recovered pathwisely by concatenating discounted Stratonovich solutions.
We prove the Ito-Tanaka formula and the existence of pathwise stochastic integrals for a wide class of Gaussian processes. Motivated by financial applications, we define the stochastic integrals as forward-type pathwise integrals introduced by Föllmer and as pathwise generalized Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals introduced by Zähle. As an application, we illustrate the importance of Ito-Tanaka formula for pricing and hedging of financial derivatives.
We show pathwise uniqueness for a class of degenerate Itô-SDE among all of its weak solutions that spend zero time at the points of degeneracy of the dispersion matrix. Consequently, by the Yamada-Watanabe Theorem and a weak existence result, the pathwise unique solutions can be shown to be strong and to exist. The main tools to show pathwise uniqueness are inequalities associated with maximal functions and a Krylov type estimate derived from elliptic regularity and uniqueness in law.
Lyons' Rough Path theory is currently formulated in p-variation topology. We extend his main-result, the Universal Limit Theorem, to a stronger Hoelder topology. Several approximations to Brownian Rough Paths are studied. As application of our approach, we obtain the celebrated support theorem (in Hoelder-topology) as immediate (!) corollary.
In this paper we establish the associativity property of the pathwise Itô integral in a functional setting for continuous integrators. Here, associativity refers to the computation of the Itô differential of an Itô integral, by means of the intuitive cancellation of the Itô differential and integral signs.
Motivated by questions arising in financial mathematics, Dupire introduced a notion of smoothness for functionals of paths (different from the usual Fréchet--Gatéaux derivatives) and arrived at a generalization of Itō's formula applicable to functionals which have a pathwise continuous dependence on the trajectories of the underlying process. We study nonlinear functionals which do not have such pathwise continuity and further work simultaneously under the family of continuous semimartingale measures on path-space. We do this without introducing a second component, as carried out by Cont--Four…
We develop the rough path counterpart of Itô stochastic integration and - differential equations driven by general semimartingales. This significantly enlarges the classes of (Itô / forward) stochastic differential equations treatable with pathwise methods. A number of applications are discussed.
Recently, functional Itō calculus has been introduced and developed in finite dimension for functionals of continuous semimartingales. With different techniques, we develop a functional Itō calculus for functionals of Hilbert spacevalued diffusions. In this context, we first prove a path-dependent Itō's formula, then we show applications to classical solutions of path-dependent Kolmogorov equations in Hilbert spaces and derive a Clark-Ocone type formula. Finally, we explicitly verify that all the theory developed can be applied to a class of diffusions driven by SDEs with a path-dependent drif…
We extend the Itō formula \cite{MR1837298}*{Theorem 2.3} for semimartingales with rcll paths. We also comment on Local time process of such semimartingales. We apply the Itō formula to Lévy processes to obtain existence of solutions to certain classes of stochastic differential equations in the Hermite-Sobolev spaces.
This paper introduces the path derivatives, in the spirit of Dupire's functional Itô calculus, for the controlled paths in the rough path theory with possibly non-geometric rough paths. The theory allows us to deal with rough integration and rough PDEs in the same manner as standard stochastic calculus. We next study rough PDEs with coefficients depending on the rough path itself, which corresponds to stochastic PDEs with random coefficients. Such coefficients is less regular in the time variable and is not covered in the existing literature. The results are useful for studying viscosity solut…
We study the convergence to the multiple Wiener-Itô integral from processes with absolutely continuous paths. More precisely, consider a family of processes, with paths in the Cameron-Martin space, that converges weakly to a standard Brownian motion in $\mathcal C_0([0,T])$. Using these processes, we construct a family that converges weakly, in the sense of the finite dimensional distributions, to the multiple Wiener-Itô integral process of a function $f\in L^2([0,T]^n)$. We prove also the weak convergence in the space $\mathcal C_0([0,T])$ to the second order integral for two important famili…
We introduce a variational theory for processes adapted to the multi-dimensional Brownian motion filtration that provides a differential structure allowing to describe infinitesimal evolution of Wiener functionals at very small scales. The main novel idea is to compute the "sensitivities" of processes, namely derivatives of martingale components and a weak notion of infinitesimal generators, via a finite-dimensional approximation procedure based on controlled inter-arrival times and approximating martingales. The theory comes with convergence results that allow to interpret a large class of Wi…
In this paper, we study properties of quadratic variations of càdlàg paths within the framework of the Itô--Föllmer calculus in Banach spaces. We prove a $C^1$-type transformation formula for quadratic variations. We also investigate relations between tensor and scalar quadratic variations.
We derive Itô-type change of variable formulas for smooth functionals of irregular paths with non-zero $p-$th variation along a sequence of partitions where $p \geq 1$ is arbitrary, in terms of fractional derivative operators, extending the results of the Föllmer-Ito calculus to the general case of paths with 'fractional' regularity. In the case where $p$ is not an integer, we show that the change of variable formula may sometimes contain a non-zero a 'fractional' Itô remainder term and provide a representation for this remainder term. These results are then extended to paths with non-zero $ϕ-…
First, we revisit functional Itô/path-dependent calculus started by B. Dupire, R. Cont and D.-A. Fournié, using the formulation of calculus via regularization. Relations with the corresponding Banach space valued calculus introduced by C. Di Girolami and the second named author are explored. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of the Kolmogorov type equation associated with the so called window Brownian motion, called path-dependent heat equation, for which well-posedness at the level of classical solutions is established. Then, a notion of strong approximating solution, calle…
Dupire's functional Itô calculus provides an alternative approach to the classical Malliavin calculus for the computation of sensitivities, also called Greeks, of path-dependent derivatives prices. In this paper, we introduce a measure of path-dependence of functionals within the functional Itô calculus framework. Namely, we consider the Lie bracket of the space and time functional derivatives, which we use to classify functionals accordingly to their degree of path-dependence. We then revisit the problem of efficient numerical computation of Greeks for path-dependent derivatives using integra…
We consider idealized financial markets in which price paths of the traded securities are cadlag functions, imposing mild restrictions on the allowed size of jumps. We prove the existence of quadratic variation for typical price paths, where the qualification "typical" means that there is a trading strategy that risks only one monetary unit and brings infinite capital if quadratic variation does not exist. This result allows one to apply numerous known results in pathwise Ito calculus to typical price paths; we give a brief overview of such results.
This paper studies the existence and uniqueness of solution of Itô type stochastic differential equation $dx(t)=b(t, x(t), \om)dt+\si(t,x(t), \om) d B(t)$, where $B(t)$ is a fractional Brownian motion of Hurst parameter $H>1/2$ and $dB(t)$ is the Itô differential defined by using Wick product or divergence operator. The coefficients $b$ and $\si$ are random and can be anticipative. Using the relationship between the Itô type and pathwise integrals we first write the equation as a stochastic differential equation involving pathwise integral plus a Malliavin derivative term. To handle this Malli…
We consider autonomous stochastic ordinary differential equations (SDEs) and weak approximations of their solutions for a general class of sufficiently smooth path-dependent functionals f. Based on tools from functional Itô calculus, such as the functional Itô formula and functional Kolmogorov equation, we derive a general representation formula for the weak error $E(f(X_T)-f(\tilde X_T))$, where $X_T$ and $\tilde X_T$ are the paths of the solution process and its approximation up to time T. The functional $f:C([0,T],R^d)\to R$ is assumed to be twice continuously Fréchet differentiable with de…
We derive an Ito-formula for the Dawson-Watanabe superprocess, a well-known class of measure-valued processes, extending the classical Ito-formula with respect to two aspects. Firstly, we extend the state-space of the underlying process $(X(t))_{t\in [0,T]}$ to an infinite-dimensional one - the space of finite measure. Secondly, we extend the formula to functions $F(t,X_t)$ depending on the entire paths $X_t=(X(s\wedge t))_{s \in [0,T]}$ up to times $t$. This later extension is usually called functional Ito-formula. Finally we remark on the application to predictable representation for marting…
Functional Itô calculus was introduced in order to expand a functional $F(t, X\_{\cdot+t}, X\_t)$ depending on time $t$, past and present values of the process $X$. Another possibility to expand $F(t, X\_{\cdot+t}, X\_t)$ consists in considering the path $X\_{\cdot+t}=\{X\_{x+t},\,x\in[-T,0]\}$ as an element of the Banach space of continuous functions on $C([-T,0])$ and to use Banach space stochastic calculus. The aim of this paper is threefold. 1) To reformulate functional Itô calculus, separating time and past, making use of the regularization procedures which matches more naturally the noti…
Motivated by a problematic coming from mathematical finance, this paper is devoted to existing and additional results of continuity and differentiability of the Itô map associated to rough differential equations. These regularity results together with Malliavin calculus are applied to sensitivities analysis for stochastic differential equations driven by multidimensional Gaussian processes with continuous paths, especially fractional Brownian motions. Precisely, in that framework, results on computation of greeks for Itô's stochastic differential equations are extended. An application in mathe…
We develop a nonanticipative calculus for functionals of a continuous semimartingale, using an extension of the Ito formula to path-dependent functionals which possess certain directional derivatives. The construction is based on a pathwise derivative, introduced by Dupire, for functionals on the space of right-continuous functions with left limits. We show that this functional derivative admits a suitable extension to the space of square-integrable martingales. This extension defines a weak derivative which is shown to be the inverse of the Ito integral and which may be viewed as a nonanticip…
We present a detailed analysis of non-degenerate time-homogeneous Itô-stochastic differential equations with low local regularity assumptions on the coefficients. In particular the drift coefficient may only satisfy a local integrability condition. We discuss non-explosion, irreducibility, Krylov type estimates, regularity of the transition function and resolvent, moment inequalities, recurrence, transience, long time behavior of the transition function, existence and uniqueness of invariant measures, as well as pathwise uniqueness, strong solutions and uniqueness in law. This analysis shows i…
We derive a functional change of variable formula for {\it non-anticipative} functionals defined on the space of right continuous paths with left limits. The functional is only required to possess certain directional derivatives, which may be computed pathwise. Our results lead to functional extensions of the Ito formula for a large class of stochastic processes, including semimartingales and Dirichlet processes. In particular, we show the stability of the class of semimartingales under certain functional transformations. Keywords: change of variable formula, functional derivative, functional …
We show in this note that the Ito-Lyons solution map associated to a rough differential equation is Frechet differentiable when understood as a map between some Banach spaces of controlled paths. This regularity result provides an elementary approach to Taylor-like expansions of Inahama-Kawabi type for solutions of rough differential equations depending on a small parameter, and makes the construction of some natural dynamics on the path space over any compact Riemannian manifold straightforward, giving back Driver's flow as a particular case.
This paper begins by giving an historical context to fractional Brownian Motion and its development. Section 2 then introduces the fractional calculus, from the Riemann-Liouville perspective. In Section 3, we introduce Brownian motion and its properties, which is the framework for deriving the Itô integral. In Section 4 we finally introduce the Itô calculus and discuss the derivation of the Itô integral. Section 4.1 continues the discussion about the Itô calculus by introducing the Itô formula, which is the analogue to the chain rule in classical calculus. In Section 5 we present our formal de…
In this paper, we study rough path properties of stochastic integrals of Itô's type and Stratonovich's type with respect to $G$-Brownian motion. The roughness of $G$-Brownian Motion is estimated and then the pathwise Norris lemma in $G$-framework is obtained.
Let $u(t,x)$ be the solution to a stochastic heat equation $$ \frac{\partial}{\partial t}u=\frac12\frac{\partial^2}{\partial x^2}u+\frac{\partial^2}{\partial t\partial x}X(t,x),\quad t\geq 0, x\in {\mathbb R} $$ with initial condition $u(0,x)\equiv 0$, where $X$ is a time-space white noise. This paper is an attempt to study stochastic analysis questions of the solution $u(t,x)$. In fact, the solution is a Gaussian process such that the process $t\mapsto u(t,\cdot)$ is a bi-fractional Brownian motion seemed a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H=\frac14$ for every real number $x$. How…
Two generalizations of Itô formula to infinite-dimensional spaces are given. The first one, in Hilbert spaces, extends the classical one by taking advantage of cancellations, when they occur in examples and it is applied to the case of a group generator. The second one, based on the previous one and a limit procedure, is an Itô formula in a special class of Banach spaces, having a product structure with the noise in a Hilbertian component, again the key point is the extension due to a cancellation. This extension to Banach spaces and in particular the specific cancellation are motivated by pat…
The Wong-Zakai theorem asserts that ODEs driven by "reasonable" (e.g. piecewise linear) approximations of Brownian motion converge to the corresponding Stratonovich stochastic differential equation. With the aid of rough path analysis, we study "non-reasonable" approximations and go beyond a well-known criterion of [Ikeda--Watanabe, North Holland 1989] in the sense that our result applies to perturbations on all levels, exhibiting additional drift terms involving any iterated Lie brackets of the driving vector fields. In particular, this applies to the approximations by McShane ('72) and Sussm…
This paper provides an existence-and-uniqueness theorem characterizing the stochastic integral with respect to a Wiener process. The integral is represented as a mapping from the space of measurable and adapted pathwise locally integrable processes to the space of continuous adapted processes. It is characterized in terms of two properties: (1) how the stochastic integrals of simple processes are calculated and (2) how these integrals converge in probability when the time integrals of the squared integrands converge in probability.
We develop a Fourier approach to rough path integration, based on the series decomposition of continuous functions in terms of Schauder functions. Our approach is rather elementary, the main ingredient being a simple commutator estimate, and it leads to recursive algorithms for the calculation of pathwise stochastic integrals, both of Itô and of Stratonovich type. We apply it to solve stochastic differential equations in a pathwise manner.
Whenever an Itô-Wentsel type of formula holds for composition of flows of a certain differential dynamics, there exists locally a decomposition of the corresponding flow according to complementary distributions (or foliations, in the case of integrability of these distributions). Many examples have been proved in distinct context of dynamics: Stratonovich stochastic equations, Lévy driven noise, low regularity $α$-Hölder control functions ($ α\in (1/2,1]$), see e.g. [6], [7], [20], [21]. Here we present the proof of this categorical property: we illustrate with the $α$-Hölder rough path, $α\in…
A great open problem is: can one learn the topology of the non-smooth path spaces with an L2 Hodge-deRham theory This one hopes to establish through a suitable complex of differential forms. Since the space is a Banach manifolds, and the Hodge theory is based on Hilbert spaces, it is trick to find such a complex. The relatively simpler Bismut tangent spaces and their tensor products, whose dual spaces are natural candidates for the complex, cannot be used, because these spaces are not necessarily closed under the Lie bracket operation if there is the effect of curvature. In this article we see…
T. Lyons' rough path theory is something like a deterministic version of K. Ito's theory of stochastic differential equations, combined with ideas from K. T. Chen's theory of iterated path integrals. In this article we survey rough path theory, in particular, its probabilistic aspects.
We derive a stochastic Gronwall lemma with suprema over the paths in the upper bound of the assumed affine-linear growth assumption. This allows applications to Itô processes with coefficients which depend on earlier time points such as stochastic delay equations or Euler-type approximations of stochastic differential equations. We apply our stochastic Gronwall lemma with path-suprema to stochastic functional differential equations and prove a strong convergence rate for coefficient functions which depend on path-suprema.
After defining non-Gaussian Lévy processes for two-sided time, stochastic differential equations with such Lévy processes are considered. Solution paths for these stochastic differential equations have countable jump discontinuities in time. Topological equivalence (or conjugacy) for such an Itô stochastic differential equation and its transformed random differential equation is established. Consequently, a stochastic Hartman-Grobman theorem is proved for the linearization of the Itô stochastic differential equation. Furthermore, for Marcus stochastic differential equations, this topological eq…
We consider a stochastic Volterra integral equation with regular path-dependent coefficients and a Brownian motion as integrator in a multidimensional setting. Under an imposed absolute continuity condition, the unique solution is a semimartingale that admits almost surely Hölder continuous paths. Based on functional Itô calculus, we prove that the support of its law in the Hölder norm can be described by a flow of mild solutions to ordinary integro-differential equations that are constructed by means of the vertical derivative of the diffusion coefficient.
We introduce a variational theory for processes adapted to the multi-dimensional Brownian motion filtration. The theory provides a differential structure which describes the infinitesimal evolution of Wiener functionals at very small scales. The Markov property is replaced by a finite-dimensional approximation procedure based on controlled inter-arrival times and jumps of approximating martingales. The theory reveals that a large class of adapted processes follow a differential rule which is similar in nature to a fundamental theorem of calculus in the context of Wiener functionals. Null stoch…
We describe stochastic calculus in the context of processes that are driven by an adapted point process of locally finite intensity and are differentiable between jumps. This includes Markov chains as well as non-Markov processes. By analogy with Itô processes we define the drift and diffusivity, which we then use to describe a general sample path estimate. We then give several examples, including ODE approximation, processes with linear drift, first passage times, and an application to the stochastic logistic model.
We provide a very brief introduction to typical paths and the corresponding Itô type integration. Relying on this robust Itô integration, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for one-dimensional differential equations driven by typical paths with non-Lipschitz continuous coefficients in the spirit of Yamada--Watanabe as well as an approximation result in the spirit of Doss--Sussmann.
Consider a mean-reverting equation, generalized in the sense it is driven by a 1-dimensional centered Gaussian process with Hölder continuous paths on $[0,T]$ ($T > 0$). Taking that equation in rough paths sense only gives local existence of the solution because the non-explosion condition is not satisfied in general. Under natural assumptions, by using specific methods, we show the global existence and uniqueness of the solution, its integrability, the continuity and differentiability of the associated Itô map, and we provide an $L^p$-converging approximation with a rate of convergence ($p\ge…
