We show the close connection between appearingly different Galois theories for comodules introduced recently in [J. Gómez-Torrecillas and J. Vercruysse, Comatrix corings and Galois Comodules over firm rings, arXiv:math.RA/0509106.] and [R. Wisbauer, On Galois comodules (2004), to appear in Comm. Algebra.]. Furthermore we study equivalences between categories of comodules over a coring and modules over a firm ring. We show that these equivalences are related to Galois theory for comodules.
In this article we defined and studied quasi-finite comodules, the cohom functors for coalgebras over rings. linear functors between categories of comodules are also investigated and it is proved that good enough linear functors are nothing but a cotensor functor. Our main result of this work characterizes equivalences between comodule categories generalizing the Morita-Takeuchi theory to coalgebras over rings. Morita-Takeuchi contexts in our setting is defined and investigated, a correspondence between strict Morita-Takeuchi contexts and equivalences of comodule categories over the involved c…
In this note we consider different versions of coinduction functors between categories of comodules for corings induced by a morphism of corings. In particular we introduce a new version of the coinduction functor in the case of locally projective corings as a composition of suitable ``Trace'' and ``Hom'' functors and show how to derive it from a more general coinduction functor between categories of type $σ\lbrack M].$ In special cases (e.g. the corings morphism is part of a morphism of measuring $α$-pairings or the corings have the same base ring), a version of our functor is shown to be iso…
For a bialgebra $L$ coacting on a $\Bbbk$-algebra $A$, a classical result states that $A$ is a right $L$-comodule algebra if and only if $A$ is an algebra in the monoidal category $\mathcal{M}^{L}$ of right $L$-comodules; the former notion is formulaic while the latter is categorical. We generalize this result to the setting of weak bialgebras $H$. The category $\mathcal{M}^H$ admits a monoidal structure by work of Nill and Böhm-Caenepeel-Janssen, but the algebras in $\mathcal{M}^H$ are not canonically $\Bbbk$-algebras. Nevertheless, we prove that there is an isomorphism between the category o…
It is well-known that the category of comodules over a flat Hopf algebroid is abelian but typically fails to have enough projectives, and more generally, the category of graded comodules over a graded flat Hopf algebroid is abelian but typically fails to have enough projectives. In this short paper we prove that the category of connective graded comodules over a connective, graded, flat, finite-type Hopf algebroid has enough projectives. Applications to algebraic topology are given: the Hopf algebroids of stable co-operations in complex bordism, Brown-Peterson homology, and classical mod $p$ h…
We extend the comatrix coring to the case of a quasi-finite bicomodule. We also generalize some of its interesting properties. We study equivalences between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings. We apply our results to corings coming from entwining structures and graded structures, and we obtain new results in the setting of entwining structures and in the graded ring theory.
We study and relate categories of modules, comodules and contramodules over a representation of a small category taking values in (co)algebras, in a manner similar to modules over a ringed space. As a result, we obtain a categorical framework which incorporates all the adjoint functors between these categories in a natural manner. Various classical properties of coalgebras and their morphisms arise naturally within this theory. We also consider cartesian objects in each of these categories, which may be viewed as counterparts of quasi-coherent sheaves over a scheme. We study their categorical …
This paper can be thought of as an extended introduction to arXiv:0708.3398; nevertheless, most of its results are not covered by loc. cit. We consider the derived categories of DG-modules, DG-comodules, and DG-contramodules, the coderived and contraderived categories of CDG-modules, the coderived categories of CDG-comodules, and the contraderived categories of CDG-contramodules. The equivalence between the latter two categories (the comodule-contramodule correspondence) is established. Nonhomogeneous Koszul duality or "triality" (an equivalence between exotic derived categories corresponding …
We study comodule functors for comonads arising from mixed distributive laws. Their Galois property is reformulated in terms of a (so-called) regular arrow in Street's bicategory of comonads. Between categories possessing equalizers, we introduce the notion of a regular adjunction. An equivalence is proven between the category of pre-torsors over two regular adjunctions $(N_A,R_A)$ and $(N_B,R_B)$ on one hand, and the category of regular comonad arrows $(R_A,ξ)$ from some equalizer preserving comonad ${\mathbb C}$ to $N_BR_B$ on the other. This generalizes a known relationship between pre-tors…
Let $\lL(A)$ denote the coendomorphism left $R$-bialgebroid associated to a left finitely generated and projective extension of rings $R \to A$ with identities. We show that the category of left comodules over an epimorphic image of $\lL(A)$ is equivalent to the category of chain complexes of left $R$-modules. This equivalence is monoidal whenever $R$ is commutative and $A$ is an $R$-algebra. This is a generalization, using entirely new tools, of results by B. Pareigis and D. Tambara for chain complexes of vector spaces over fields. Our approach relies heavily on the non commutative theory of …
Properties of (most general) non-commutative torsors or A-B torsors are analysed. Starting with pre-torsors it is shown that they are equivalent to a certain class of Galois extensions of algebras by corings. It is shown that a class of faithfully flat pre-torsors induces equivalences between categories of comodules of associated corings. It is then proven that A-B torsors correspond to monoidal functors (and, under some additional conditions, equivalences) between categories of comodules of bialgebroids.
By a theorem due to Kato and Ohtake, any (not necessarily strict) Morita context induces an equivalence between appropriate subcategories of the module categories of the two rings in the Morita context. These are in fact categories of firm modules for non-unital subrings. We apply this result to various Morita contexts associated to a comodule $Σ$ of an $A$-coring $\cC$. This allows to extend (weak and strong) structure theorems in the literature, in particular beyond the cases when any of the coring $\cC$ or the comodule $Σ$ is finitely generated and projective as an $A$-module. That is, we o…
Let $A$ be an algebra over a commutative ring $k$. We compute the center of the category of $A$-bimodules. There are six isomorphic descriptions: the center equals the weak center, and can be described as categories of noncommutative descent data, comodules over the Sweedler canonical $A$-coring, Yetter-Drinfeld type modules or modules with a flat connection from noncommutative differential geometry. All six isomorphic categories are braided monoidal categories: in particular, the category of comodules over the Sweedler canonical $A$-coring $A \ot A$ is braided monoidal. We provide several app…
Prime objects were defined as generalization of simple objects in the categories of rings (modules). In this paper we introduce and investigate what turns out to be a suitable generalization of simple corings (simple comodules), namely fully coprime corings (fully coprime comodules). Moreover, we consider several primeness notions in the category of comodules of a given coring and investigate their relations with the fully coprimeness and the simplicity of these comodules. These notions are applied then to study primeness and coprimeness properties of a given coring, considered as an object in…
For coalgebras $C$ over a field, we study when the categories ${}^C\Mm$ of left $C$-comodules and $\Mm^C$ of right $C$-comodules are symmetric categories, in the sense that there is a duality between the categories of finitely presented unitary left $R$-modules and finitely presented unitary left $L$-modules, where $R$ and $L$ are the functor rings associated to the finitely accessible categories ${}^C\Mm$ and $\Mm^C$.
We extend Morita theory to abelian categories by using wide Morita contexts. Several equivalence results are given for wide Morita contexts between abelian categories, widely extending equivalence theorems for categories of modules and comodules due to Kato, Muller and Berbec. In the case of Grothendieck categories we derive equivalence results by using quotient categories. We apply the general equivalence results to rings with identity, rings with local units, graded rings, Doi-Hopf modules and coalgebras.
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra over a field $k$, and $A$ an $H$-comodule algebra. The categories of comodules and relative Hopf modules are then Grothendieck categories with enough injectives. We study the derived functors of the associated Hom functors, and of the coinvariants functor, and discuss spectral sequences that connect them. We also discuss when the coinvariants functor preserves injectives.
We study the biclosedness of the monoidal categories of modules and comodules over a (left or right) Hopf algebroid, along with the bimodule category centres of the respective opposite categories and a corresponding categorical equivalence to anti Yetter-Drinfel'd contramodules and anti Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, respectively. This is directly connected to the existence of a trace functor on the monoidal categories of modules and comodules in question, which in turn allows to recover (or define) cyclic operators enabling cyclic cohomology.
We study the universal measuring coalgebras P(A,B) of Sweedler and the universal measuring comodules Q(M,N) of Batchelor. We show that these universal objects exist in a very general context. We provide a detailed proof of an observation of Wraith, that the P(A,B) are the hom-objects of an enrichment of algebras in coalgebras. We show also that the Q(M,N) provide an enrichment of the global category of modules in the global category of comodules.
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra. We consider $H$-equivariant modules over a Hopf module category $\mathcal C$ as modules over the smash extension $\mathcal C\# H$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for the cohomologies as well as the $H$-locally finite cohomologies of these objects. We also introduce relative $(\mathcal D,H)$-Hopf modules over a Hopf comodule category $\mathcal D$. These generalize relative $(A,H)$-Hopf modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $A$. We construct Grothendieck spectral sequences for their cohomologies by using their rational $Hom$ objects and higher derived func…
We introduce group corings, and study functors between categories of comodules over group corings, and the relationship to graded modules over graded rings. Galois group corings are defined, and a Structure Theorem for the $G$-comodules over a Galois group coring is given. We study (graded) Morita contexts associated to a group coring. Our theory is applied to group corings associated to a comodule algebra over a Hopf group coalgebra.
We show that almost split sequences in the category of comodules over a coalgebra with finite-dimensional right-hand term are direct limits of almost split sequences over finite dimensional subcoalgebras. In previous work we showed that such almost split sequences exist if the right hand term has a quasifinitely copresented linear dual. Conversely, taking limits of almost split sequences over finte-dimensional comodule categories, we then show that, for countable-dimensional coalgebras, certain exact sequences exist which satisfy a condition weaker than being almost split, which we call ``fini…
Comodule algebras of a Hopf algebroid H with a bijective antipode, i.e. algebra extensions B\subseteq A by H, are studied. Assuming that a lifted canonical map is a split epimorphism of modules of the non-commutative base algebra of H, relative injectivity of the H-comodule algebra A is related to the Galois property of the extension B\subseteq A and also to the equivalence of the category of relative Hopf modules to the category of B-modules. This extends a classical theorem by H.-J. Schneider on Galois extensions by a Hopf algebra. Our main tool is an observation that relative injectivity of…
Let $A$ be a ring and $\M_A$ the category of $A$-modules. It is well known in module theory that for any $A $-bimodule $B$, $B$ is an $A$-ring if and only if the functor $-\otimes_A B: \M_A\to \M_A$ is a monad (or triple). Similarly, an $A $-bimodule $\C$ is an $A$-coring provided the functor $-\otimes_A\C:\M_A\to \M_A$ is a comonad (or cotriple). The related categories of modules (or algebras) of $-\otimes_A B$ and comodules (or coalgebras) of $-\otimes_A\C$ are well studied in the literature. On the other hand, the right adjoint endofunctors $\Hom_A(B,-)$ and $\Hom_A(\C,-)$ are a comonad and…
We first introduce the notion of Doi Hom-Hopf modules and find the sufficient condition for the category of Doi Hom-Hopf modules to be monoidal. Also we obtain the condition for the monoidal Hom-algebra and monoidal Hom-coalgebra to be monoidal Hom-bialgebras. Second, we give the maps between the underlying monoidal Hom-Hopf algebras, Hom-comodule algebras and Hom-module coalgebras give rise to functors between the category of Doi Hom-Hopf modules and study tensor identities for monodial categories of Doi Hom-Hopf modules. Furthermore, we construct a braiding on the category of Doi Hom-Hopf mo…
The relation between crossed product and $H$-Galois extension in braided tensor category ${\cal C}$ with equivalisers and coequivalisers is established. That is, it is shown that if there exist an equivaliser and a coequivaliser for any two morphisms in ${\cal C}$, then $A = B #_σH$ is a crossed product algebra if and only if the extension $A/B$ is Galois, the canonical epic $q: A\otimes A \to A\otimes_B A$ is split and $A$ is isomorphic as left $B$-modules and right $H$-comodules to $B\otimes H$ in ${\cal C}$.
We study the transfer of (dual) relative CS-Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories. We consider fully faithful functors as well as adjoint pairs of functors. We give several applications to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to (graded) module and comodule categories.
Let $H$ and $L$ be two Hopf algebras such that their comodule categories are monoidal equivalent. We prove that if $H$ is a twisted Calabi-Yau (CY) Hopf algebra, then $L$ is a twisted CY algebra when it is homologically smooth. Especially, if $H$ is a Noetherian twisted CY Hopf algebra and $L$ has finite global dimension, then $L$ is a twisted CY algebra.
In this paper we give a construction of the universal enveloping algebra of a Malcev algebra in categories of group algebra comodules with a symmetry given by a bicharacter of the group. A particular example of such categories is the category of super vector spaces.
We study the globalization of partial actions on sets and topological spaces and of partial coactions on algebras by applying the general theory of globalization for geometric partial comodules, as previously developed by the authors. We show that this approach does not only allow to recover all known results in these settings, but it allows to treat new cases of interest, too.
We introduce "geometric" partial comodules over coalgebras in monoidal categories, as an alternative notion to the notion of partial action and coaction of a Hopf algebra introduced by Caenepeel and Janssen. The name is motivated by the fact that our new notion suits better if one wants to describe phenomena of partial actions in algebraic geometry. Under mild conditions, the category of geometric partial comodules is shown to be complete and cocomplete and the category of partial comodules over a Hopf algebra is lax monoidal. We develop a Hopf-Galois theory for geometric partial coactions to …
Let $R$, $S$ be two rings, $C$ an $R$-coring and ${}_{R}^C{\mathcal M}$ the category of left $C$-comodules. The category ${\bf Rep}\, ( {}_{R}^C{\mathcal M}, {}_{S}{\mathcal M} )$ of all representable functors ${}_{R}^C{\mathcal M} \to {}_{S}{\mathcal M}$ is shown to be equivalent to the opposite of the category ${}_{R}^C{\mathcal M}_S$. For $U$ an $(S,R)$-bimodule we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the induction functor $U\otimes_R - : {}_{R}^C\mathcal{M} \to {}_{S}\mathcal{M}$ to be: a representable functor, an equivalence of categories, a separable or a Frobenius functor. The l…
Localisation is an important technique in ring theory and yields the construction of various rings of quotients. Colocalisation in comodule categories has been investigated by some authors where the colocalised coalgebra turned out to be a suitable subcoalgebra. Rather then aiming at a subcoalgebra we look at possible coalgebra covers p:D->>C that could play the role of a dual quotient object. Codense covers will dualise dense (or rational) extensions; a maximal codense cover construction for coalgebras with projective covers is proposed. We also look at a dual non-singularity concept for modu…
A relationship between curved differential algebras and corings is established and explored. In particular it is shown that the category of semi-free curved differential graded algebras is equivalent to the category of corings with surjective counits. Under this equivalence, comodules over a coring correspond to integrable connections or quasi-cohesive curved modules, while contramodules over a coring correspond to a specific class of curved modules introduced and termed Z-divergences in here.
Under mild assumptions, we construct the two Matlis additive category equivalences for an associative ring epimorphism $u\colon R\to U$. Assuming that the ring epimorphism is homological of flat/projective dimension $1$, we discuss the abelian categories of $u$-comodules and $u$-contramodules and construct the recollement of unbounded derived categories of $R$-modules, $U$-modules, and complexes of $R$-modules with $u$-co/contramodule cohomology. Further assumptions allow to describe the third category in the recollement as the unbounded derived category of the abelian categories of $u$-comodu…
A coring (A,C) consists of an algebra A and a coalgebra C in the monoidal category of A-bimodules. Corings and their comodules arise naturally in the study of Hopf-Galois extensions and descent theory, as well as in the study of Hopf algebroids. In this paper, we address the question of when two corings in a symmetric monoidal model category V are homotopically Morita equivalent, i.e., when their respective categories of comodules are Quillen equivalent. The category of comodules over the trivial coring (A,A) is isomorphic to the category of A-modules, so the question above englobes that of wh…
We describe how some aspects of abstract localization on module categories have applications to the study of injective comodules over some special types of corings. We specialize the general results to the case of Doi-Koppinen modules, generalizing previous results in this setting.
A pair of adjoint functors $(F,G)$ is called a Frobenius pair of the second type if $G$ is a left adjoint of $βFα$ for some category equivalences $α$ and $β$. Frobenius ring extensions of the second kind provide examples of Frobenius pairs of the second kind. We study Frobenius pairs of the second kind between categories of modules, comodules, and comodules over a coring. We also show that a finitely generated projective Hopf algebra over a commutative ring is always a Frobenius extension of the second kind, and prove that the integral spaces of the Hopf algebra and its dual are isomorphic.
Firm Frobenius algebras are firm algebras and counital coalgebras such that the comultiplication is a bimodule map. They are investigated by categorical methods based on a study of adjunctions and lifted functors. Their categories of comodules and of firm modules are shown to be isomorphic if and only if a canonical comparison functor from the category of comodules to the category of non-unital modules factorizes through the category of firm modules. This happens for example if the underlying algebra possesses local units, e.g. the firm Frobenius algebra arises from a co-Frobenius coalgebra ov…
We investigate Frobenius pairs between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings, which leads to a reasonable notion of Frobenius coring extension. When applied to corings stemming from entwining structures, we obtain new results in this setting.
In this paper, we introduce and investigate \emph{semicorings} over associative semirings and their categories of \emph{semicomodules.} Our results generalize old and recent results on corings over rings and their categories of comodules. The generalization is \emph{not} straightforward and even subtle at some places due to the nature of the base category of commutative monoids which is neither Abelian (not even additive) nor homological, and has no non-zero injective objects. To overcome these and other difficulties, a combination of methods and techniques from categorical, homological and un…
A notion of a coring extension is defined and it is related to the existence of an additive functor between comodule categories that factorises through forgetful functors. This correspondence between coring extensions and factorisable functors is illustrated by functors between categories of descent data. A category in which objects are corings and morphisms are coring extensions is also introduced.
We show that finitely generated cohomology is invariant under separable equivalences for all algebras. As a result, we obtain a proof of the finite generation of cohomology for finite symmetric tensor categories in characteristic zero, as conjectured by Etingof and Ostrik. Moreover, for such categories we also determine the representation dimension and the Rouquier dimension of the stable category. Finally, we recover a number of results on the cohomology of stably equivalent and singularly equivalent algebras.
We investigate adjoint and Frobenius pairs between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings, which leads to a reasonable notion of Frobenius coring extension. When applied to corings stemming from entwining structures, we obtain new results in this setting and in graded ring theory.
Characteristic properties of corings with a grouplike element are analysed. Associated differential graded rings are studied. A correspondence between categories of comodules and flat connections is established. A generalisation of the Cuntz-Quillen theorem relating existence of connections in a module to projectivity of this module is proven.
In this paper we give a small review of some recent results of elementary equivalence of linear and algebraic groups and our last new results of elementary equivalence of categories of modules, endomorphism rings of modules, lattices of submodules of modules, and automorphism groups of modules.
We consider categories over a field $k$ in order to prove that smash extensions and Galois coverings with respect to a finite group coincide up to Morita equivalence of $k$-categories. For this purpose we describe processes providing Morita equivalences called contraction and expansion. We prove that composition of these processes provides any Morita equivalence, a result which is related with the karoubianisation (or idempotent completion) and additivisation of a $k$-category.
Let A and A! be dual Koszul algebras. By Positselski a filtered algebra U with gr U = A is Koszul dual to differential graded algebra (A!,d). We relate the module categories of this dual pair by a tensor-Hom adjunction. This descends to give an equivalence of suitable quotient categories and generalizes work of Beilinson, Ginzburg and Soergel.
