We explain how sheaves of vertex algebras are related to mathematical structures encoded by a class of Lagrangians. The exposition is focused on two examples: the WZW model and the (1,1)-supersymmetric $σ$-model. We conclude by showing how to construct a family of vertex algebras with base the Barannikov-Kontsevich moduli space.
This article is a continuation of the work "Tropical Lagrangian multi-sections and smoothing of locally free sheaves over degenerated Calabi-Yau surfaces". We generalize the notion of tropical Lagrangian multi-sections to any dimensions. Together with some linear algebra data, we construct a special class of locally free sheaves, called tropical locally free sheaves. We will also provide the reverse construction and show that there is a 1-1 correspondence between isomorphism classes of tropical locally free sheaves and tropical Lagrangian multi-sections modulo certain equivalence.
We partially generalize the theory of semihomogeneous bundles on an abelian variety $A$ developed by Mukai. This involves considering abelian subvarieties $Y\subset X_A=A\times\hat{A}$ and studying coherent sheaves on $A$ invariant under the action of $Y$. The natural condition to impose on $Y$ is that of being Lagrangian with respect to a certain skew-symmetric biextension of $X_A\times X_A$. We prove that in this case any $Y$-invariant sheaf is a direct sum of several copies of a single coherent sheaf. We call such sheaves Lagrangian-invariant (or LI-sheaves). We also study LI-functors $D^b(…
We study intersections of complex Lagrangian in complex symplectic manifolds, proving two main results. First, we construct global canonical perverse sheaves on complex Lagrangian intersections in complex symplectic manifolds for any pair of {\it oriented} Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex analytic topology. Our method uses classical results in complex symplectic geometry and some results from arXiv:1304.4508. The algebraic version of our result has already been obtained by the author et al. in arXiv:1211.3259 using different methods, where we used, in particular, the recent new theory of…
We define complexes of vector bundles on products of moduli spaces of framed rank r torsion-free sheaves on the complex projective plane. The top non-vanishing Chern classes of the cohomology of these complexes yield actions of the r-colored Heisenberg and Clifford algebras on the equivariant cohomology of the moduli spaces. In this way we obtain a geometric realization of the boson-fermion correspondence and related vertex operators.
We introduce the notion of tropical Lagrangian multi-sections over a $2$-dimensional integral affine manifold $B$ with singularities, and use them to study the reconstruction problem for higher rank locally free sheaves over Calabi-Yau surfaces. To certain tropical Lagrangian multi-sections $\mathbb{L}$ over $B$, which are explicitly constructed by prescribing local models around the ramification points, we construct locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}_0(\mathbb{L},{\bf{k}}_s)$ over the singular projective scheme $X_0(B,\mathscr{P},s)$ associated to $B$ equipped with a polyhedral decomposition $…
Given a Calabi-Yau manifold and considering the $B$-branes on it as objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves, we identify the vertex operators for strings between two branes with elements of the cohomology groups of Ext sheaves. We define the correlation functions for these general vertex operators. Strings stretching between two coherent sheaves are studied as homological extensions of the corresponding branes. In this context, we relate strings between different pairs of branes when there are maps between these branes. We also interpret some strings with ghost number $k$ as obstru…
The Nekrasov partition function in supersymmetric quantum gauge theory is mathematically formulated as an equivariant integral over certain moduli spaces of sheaves on a complex surface. In ``Seiberg-Witten Theory and Random Partitions'', Nekrasov and Okounkov studied these integrals using the representation theory of ``vertex operators'' and the infinite wedge representation. Many of these operators arise naturally from correspondences on the moduli spaces, such as Nakajima's Heisenberg operators, and Grojnowski's vertex operators. In this paper, we build a new vertex operator out of the Cher…
We show that coinvariants of modules over vertex operator algebras give rise to quasi-coherent sheaves on moduli of stable pointed curves. These generalize Verlinde bundles or vector bundles of conformal blocks defined using affine Lie algebras studied first by Tsuchiya-Kanie, Tsuchiya-Ueno-Yamada, and extend work of a number of researchers. The sheaves carry a twisted logarithmic D-module structure, and hence support a projectively flat connection. We identify the logarithmic Atiyah algebra acting on them, generalizing work of Tsuchimoto for affine Lie algebras.
We use wall-crossing with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions to systematically study the birational geometry of a moduli space M of stable sheaves on a K3 surface X: 1. We describe the nef cone, the movable cone, and the effective cone of M in terms of the Mukai lattice of X. 2. We establish a long-standing conjecture that predicts the existence of a birational Lagrangian fibration on M whenever M admits an integral divisor class D of square zero (with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov form). These results are proved using a natural map from the space of Bridgeland stability condition…
We study sheaves on holomorphic spaces of loops and apply this to the study of the complex, defined in \cite{BdSHK}, governing deformations of the \emph{Poisson vertex algebra} structure on the space of holomorphic loops into a Poisson variety. We describe this complex in terms of the (continuous) de Rham-Lie cohomology of an associated Lie algebroid object in locally linearly compact topological (alias \emph{Tate}) sheaves of modules on $\mathcal{L}^{+}M$. In particular this allows us to easily compute the cohomology of the above in the case where $π$ is symplectic - we obtain de Rham cohomol…
A vertex algebra is an algebraic counterpart of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We give a new definition of a vertex algebra which includes chiral algebras as a special case, but allows for fields which are neither meromorphic nor anti-meromorphic. To any complex torus equipped with a flat Kahler metric and a closed 2-form we associate an N=2 superconformal vertex algebra (N=2 SCVA) in the sense of our definition. We find a criterion for two different tori to produce isomorphic N=2 SCVA's. We show that for algebraic tori isomorphism of N=2 SCVA's implies the equivalence of the derive…
Let X be an Enriques surface over the field of complex numbers. We prove that there exists a nontrivial quaternion algebra A on X. Then we study the moduli scheme of torsion free A-modules of rank one. Finally we prove that this moduli scheme is an étale double cover of a Lagrangian subscheme in the corresponding moduli scheme on the associated covering K3 surface.
A 10-dimensional symplectic moduli space of torsion sheaves on the cubic 4-fold is constructed. It parametrizes the stable rank 2 vector bundles on the hypeplane sections of the cubic 4-fold which are obtained by Serre's construction from normal elliptic quintics. The natural projection to the dual projective 5-space parametrizing the hyperplane sections is a Lagrangian fibration. The symplectic structure is closely related (and conjecturally, is equal) to the quasi-symplectic one, induced by the Yoneda pairing on the moduli space.
We construct a family of vertex algebras associated with a family of symplectic singularity/resolution, called hypertoric varieties. While the hypertoric varieties are constructed by a certain Hamiltonian reduction associated with a torus action, our vertex algebras are constructed by (semi-infinite) BRST reduction. The construction works algebro-geometrically and we construct sheaves of $\hbar$-adic vertex algebras over hypertoric varieties which localize the vertex algebras. We show when the vertex algebras are vertex operator algebras by giving explicit conformal vectors. We also show that …
We consider global generation of sheaves of coinvariants on the moduli space of curves given by simple modules over certain vertex operator algebras, extending results for affine VOAs at integrable levels on stable pointed rational curves. Examples where global generation fails, and further evidence of positivity are given.
We use Lagrangian torus fibrations on the mirror $X$ of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold $\check X$ to construct Lagrangian sections and various Lagrangian spheres on $X$. We then propose an explicit correspondence between the sections and line bundles on $\check X$ and between spheres and sheaves supported on the toric divisors of $\check X$. We conjecture that these correspondences induce an embedding of the relevant derived Fukaya category of $X$ inside the derived category of coherent sheaves on $\check X$.
In this paper, we apply the idea of T-duality to projective spaces. From a connection on a line bundle on $\mathbb P^n$, a Lagrangian in the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model is constructed. Under this correspondence, the full strong exceptional collection $\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^n}(-n-1),...,\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^n}(-1)$ is mapped to standard Lagrangians in the sense of \cite{nz}. Passing to constructible sheaves, we explicitly compute the quiver structure of these Lagrangians, and find that they match the quiver structure of this exceptional collection of $\mathbb P^n$. In this way, T-duality prov…
Our goal in this paper is to discuss a conjectural correspondence between enumerative geometry of curves in Calabi-Yau 5-folds $Z$ and 1-dimensional sheaves on 3-folds $X$ that are embedded in $Z$ as fixed points of certain $\mathbb{C}^\times$-actions. In both cases, the enumerative information is taken in equivariant $K$-theory, where the equivariance is with respect to all automorphisms of the problem. In Donaldson-Thomas theories, one sums up over all Euler characteristics with a weight $(-q)^χ$, where $q$ is a parameter, informally referred to as the boxcounting parameter. The main feature…
Let $(M,ω_M)$ be a monotone or negatively monotone symplectic manifold, or a Weinstein manifold. One can construct an "action" of $H^1(M,\mathbb{G}_m)$ on the Fukaya category (wrapped Fukaya category in the exact case) that reflects the action of $Symp^0(M,ω_M)$ on the set of Lagrangian branes. A priori this action is only analytic. The purpose of this work is to show the algebraicity of this action under some assumptions. We use this to prove a tameness result for the sheaf of Lagrangian Floer homology groups obtained by moving one of the Lagrangians via global symplectic isotopies. We also s…
The moduli stack of representations of a quiver, or coherent sheaves on a proper curve, carries two structures on its cohomology: a Hall algebra and braided vertex coalgebra. We show that they are compatible, by developing a formulation of abelian localisation which works in the derived/singular setting. An application of these techniques gives an explicit formula for the cohomological Hall algebra products.
We construct 2-representations of quantum affine algebras from 2-representations of quantum Heisenberg algebras. The main tool in this construction are categorical vertex operators, which are certain complexes in a Heisenberg 2-representation that recover vertex operators after passing to the Grothendieck group. As an application we categorify the Frenkel-Kac-Segal homogeneous realization of the basic representation of (simply laced) quantum affine algebras. This gives rise to categorical actions of quantum affine (and toroidal) algebras on derived categories of coherent sheaves on Hilbert sch…
The purpose of this short note is to present two existence results concerning symplectic and lagrangian structures in the derived setting, in situations where the constructions of [Ca] and [PTVV] do not apply. For this we show that symplectic structures can be constructed out of Calabi-Yau structures on sheaves of dg-categories, or out of \emph{orientations} on sheaves of rigid dg-categories. These results follow from two main theorems: the HKR theorem and the cyclotomic aspect of traces in rigid infty-categories.
Starting with a vertex algebra $V$, a finite group $G$ of automorphisms of $V$, and a suitable collection of twisted $V$--modules, we construct (twisted) $D$--modules on the stack of pointed $G$--covers, introduced by Jarvis, Kaufmann, and Kimura. The fibers of these sheaves are spaces of orbifold conformal blocks defined in joint work with Edward Frenkel. The key ingredient is a $G$--equivariant version of the Virasoro uniformization theorem.
Let Y,Z be a pair of smooth coisotropic subvarieties in a smooth algebraic Poisson variety X. We show that any data of first order deformation of the structure sheaf O_X to a sheaf of noncommutative algebras and of the sheaves O_Y and O_Z to sheaves of right and left modules over the deformed algebra, respectively, gives rise to a Batalin-Vilkoviski algebra structure on the Tor-sheaf Tor^{O_X}_*(O_Y, O_Z). The induced Gerstenhaber bracket on the Tor-sheaf turns out to be canonically defined; it is independent of the choices of deformations involved. There are similar results for Ext-sheaves as…
We propose a class of toric Lagrangian A-branes on the resolved conifold that is suitable to describe torus knots on S^3. The key role is played by the SL(2,Z) transformation, which generates a general torus knot from the unknot. Applying the topological vertex to the proposed A-branes, we rederive the colored HOMFLY polynomials for torus knots, in agreement with the Rosso and Jones formula. We show that our A-model construction is mirror symmetric to the B-model analysis of Brini, Eynard and Marino. Comparing to the recent proposal by Aganagic and Vafa for knots on S^3, we demonstrate that th…
Mirror Symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties is by now well established. However, previous approaches to it did not uncover the underlying reason for mirror varieties to be mirror. We are able to calculate explicitly vertex algebras that correspond to holomorphic parts of A and B models of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections in toric varieties. We establish the relation between these vertex algebras for mirror Calabi-Yau manifolds. This should eventually allow us to rewrite the whole story of toric Mirror Symmetry in the language of sheaves of vertex algebras…
Suppose that a finite group $G$ acts on a smooth complex variety $X$. Then this action lifts to the Chiral de Rham Complex of $X$ and to its cohomology by automorphisms of the vertex algebra structure. We define twisted sectors for the Chiral de Rham Complex (and their cohomologies) as sheaves of twisted vertex algebra modules supported on the components of the fixed-point sets $X^{g}, g \in G$. Each twisted sector sheaf carries a BRST differential and is quasi-isomorphic to the de Rham complex of $X^{g}$. Putting the twisted sectors together with the vacuum sector and taking $G$--invariants, …
We give a geometric construction of the W_{1+infty} vertex algebra as the infinitesimal form of a factorization structure on an adelic Grassmannian. This gives a concise interpretation of the higher symmetries and Backlund-Darboux transformations for the KP hierarchy and its multicomponent extensions in terms of a version of "W_{1+infty}-geometry": the geometry of D-bundles on smooth curves, or equivalently torsion-free sheaves on cuspidal curves.
The goal of this paper is to make the vertex operator algebra approach to mirror symmetry accessible to algebraic geometers. Compared to better-known approaches using moduli spaces of stable maps and special Lagrangian fibrations, this approach follows more closely the original line of thinking that lead to the discovery of mirror symmetry by physicists. The ultimate goal of the vertex algebra approach is to give precise mathematical definitions of N=(2,2) superconformal field theories called A and B models associated to any Calabi-Yau variety and then show that thus constructed theories are r…
