Let \X be an affine toric variety under a torus \T and let T be a subtorus. The general T-orbit closures in \X and their flat limits are parametrized by the main component H_0 of the toric Hilbert scheme. Further, the quotient torus \T/T acts on H_0 with a dense orbit. We describe the fan of this toric variety; this leads us to an integral analogue of the fiber polytope of Billera and Sturmfels. We also describe the relation of H_0 to the main component of the inverse limit of GIT quotients of \X by T.
We show that every 3-dimensional affine normal quasihomogeneous $SL(2)$-variety has an equivariant resolution of singularities given by an invariant Hilbert scheme. This article treats the case where such $SL(2)$-variety is toric. The non-toric case is considered in the forthcoming article [Kub18].
The toric Hilbert scheme is a parameter space for all ideals with the same multi-graded Hilbert function as a given toric ideal. Unlike the classical Hilbert scheme, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are connected. We construct a graph on all the monomial ideals on the scheme, called the flip graph, and prove that the toric Hilbert scheme is connected if and only if the flip graph is connected. These graphs are used to exhibit curves in P^4 whose associated toric Hilbert schemes have arbitrary dimension. We show that the flip graph maps into the Baues graph of all triangulations of t…
We want to understand the geometry of all irreducible components of the toric Hilbert scheme. Until now it is known that the coherent component is (up to normalisation) the toric variety associated to the state polytope of the toric ideal. For the non-coherent components it was only known that there exists such a polytope describing the normalisation. Using the local equations and various facts about toric Hilbert schemes, we will derive an explicit construction of the polytope corresponding to the normalisation of the underlying reduced structure of a given non-coherent component of the toric…
The toric Hilbert scheme of a lattice L in Z^n is the multigraded Hilbert scheme parameterizing all ideals in k[x_1,...,x_n] with Hilbert function value one for every degree in the grading monoid N^n/L. In this paper we show that if L is two-dimensional, then the toric Hilbert scheme of L is smooth and irreducible. This result is false for lattices of dimension three and higher as the toric Hilbert scheme of a rank three lattice can be reducible.
This article is a continuation of [Kub18], which proves that if a $3$-dimensional affine normal quasihomogeneous $SL(2)$-variety $E$ is toric, then it has an equivariant resolution of singularities given by an invariant Hilbert scheme $\mathcal H$. In this article, we consider the case where $E$ is non-toric and show that the Hilbert-Chow morphism $γ: \mathcal H \to E$ is a resolution of singularities and that $\mathcal H$ is isomorphic to the minimal resolution of a weighted blow-up of $E$.
For an arbitrary field K, let I be an ideal in the ring K[[x,y]] expressible as a polynomial in either the pair of ideals (x, y^4) and (x,y) or the pair (x,y^3) and (x^2, y). Let G be the group of automorphisms of K[[x,y]] sending the ideal (x,y^2) to itself. Then the normalization of the closure of the G orbit of I is a toric variety. We use the interplay of the properties of Hilbert schemes and toric varieties to study these spaces.
For fixed degree $d\leq 12$, we study the Hilbert scheme of degree $d$ smooth Fano threefolds in their anticanonical embeddings. We use this to classify all possible degenerations of these varieties to toric Fano varieties with at most canonical Gorenstein singularities.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
The toric Hilbert scheme parametrizes all algebras isomorphic to a given semigroup algebra as a multigraded vectorspace. All components of the scheme are toric varieties, and among them, there is a fairly well understood coherent component. However, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are always connected. In this chapter we illustrate the use of Macaulay 2 for exploring the structure of toric Hilbert schemes. In the process we will encounter algorithms from commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, polyhedral theory and geometric combinatorics.
We compute the (unbounded) Newton-Okounkov body of the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb C^2$. We obtain an upper bound for the Newton-Okounkov body of the Hilbert scheme of points on any smooth toric surface. We conjecture that this upper bound coincides with the exact Newton-Okounkov body for the Hilbert schemes of points on $\mathbb P^2$, $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$, and Hirzebruch surfaces. These results imply upper bounds for the effective cones of these Hilbert schemes, which are also conjecturally sharp in the above cases.
Let $X$ be a complete $n$-dimensional simplicial toric variety with homogeneous coordinate ring $S$. We study the multigraded Hilbert function $H_Y$ of reduced $0$-dimensional subschemes $Y$ in $X$. We provide explicit formulas and prove non-decreasing and stabilization properties of $H_Y$ when $Y$ is a $0$-dimensional complete intersection in $X$. We apply our results to computing the dimension of some evaluation codes on $0$-dimensional complete intersection in simplicial toric varieties.
We define phylogenetic projective toric model of a trivalent graph as a generalization of a binary symmetric model of a trivalent phylogenetic tree. Generators of the pro- jective coordinate ring of the models of graphs with one cycle are explicitly described. The phylogenetic models of graphs with the same topological invariants are deforma- tion equivalent and share the same Hilbert function. We also provide an algorithm to compute the Hilbert function.
For a toric pair $(X, D)$, where $X$ is a projective toric variety of dimension $d-1\geq 1$ and $D$ is a very ample $T$-Cartier divisor, we show that the Hilbert-Kunz density function $HKd(X, D)(λ)$ is the $d-1$ dimensional volume of ${\overline {\mathcal P}}_D \cap \{z= λ\}$, where ${\overline {\mathcal P}}_D\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ is a compact $d$-dimensional set (which is a finite union of convex polytopes). We also show that, for $k\geq 1$, the function $HKd(X, kD)$ can be replaced by another compactly supported continuous function $φ_{kD}$ which is `linear in $k$'. This gives the formula f…
We construct small (50 and 26 points, respectively) point sets in dimension 5 whose graphs of triangulations are not connected. These examples improve our construction in J. Amer. Math. Soc., 13:3 (2000), 611--637 not only in size, but also in that their toric Hilbert schemes are not connected either, a question left open in that article. Additionally, the point sets can easily be put into convex position, providing examples of 5-dimensional polytopes with non-connected graph of triangulations.
In this article, we investigate deformations of a Calabi-Yau manifold $Z$ in a toric variety $F$, possibly not smooth. In particular, we prove that the forgetful morphism from the Hilbert functor $H^F_Z$ of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ in $F$ to the functor of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ is smooth. This implies the smoothness of $H^F_Z $ at the corresponding point in the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we give some examples and include some computations on the Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds in Fano toric varieties.
Let X be an irreducible affine T-variety. We consider families of affine stable toric T-varieties over X and give a description of the corresponding moduli space as the quotient stack of an open subscheme in a certain toric Hilbert scheme under the action of a torus.
The notion of a d-critical locus is an ingredient in the definition of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants by [BJM19]. There is a canonical d-critical locus structure on the Hilbert scheme of dimension zero subschemes on local toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This is obtained by truncating the $-1$-shifted symplectic structure on the derived moduli stack [BBBBJ15]. In this paper we show the canonical d-critical locus structure has critical charts consistent with the description of Hilbert scheme as a degeneracy locus [BBS13]. In particular, the canonical d-critical locus structure is isomorphic to th…
We give explicit equations for the Chow and Hilbert quotients of a projective scheme X by the action of an algebraic torus T in an auxiliary toric variety. As a consequence we provide GIT descriptions of these canonical quotients, and obtain other GIT quotients of X by variation of GIT quotient. We apply these results to find equations for the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} of stable genus zero n-pointed curves as a subvariety of a smooth toric variety defined via tropical methods.
We prove the existence of a compactly supported, continuous (except at finitely many points) function $g_{I, {\bf m}}: [0, \infty)\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ for all monomial prime ideals $I$ of $R$ of height one where $(R, {\bf m})$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring associated to a projectively normal toric pair $(X, D)$, such that $$\int_{0}^{\infty}g_{I, {\bf m}}(λ)dλ=β(I, {\bf m}),$$ where $β(I, {\bf m})$ is the second coefficient of the Hilbert-Kunz function of $I$ with respect to the maximal ideal ${\bf m}$, as proved by Huneke-McDermott-Monsky \cite{HMM2004}. Using the above result, fo…
The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula which allows one to compute the dimension of the cohomology groups of the sheaf $Ω_¶^p(D)$ of p-th differential forms of Zariski twisted by an ample invertible sheaf on a complete simplicial toric variety. The formula involves some combinatorial sums of integer points over all faces of the support polytope for ${Ø_X}(D)$. We also introduce a new combinatorial object, the so-called p-th Hilbert-Erhart polynomial, which generalizes the usual notion and behaves similar. Namely, there exists a generalization of the inversion law for a usual …
We use cellular resolutions of monomial ideals to prove an analog of Hilbert's syzygy theorem for virtual resolutions of monomial ideals on smooth toric varieties.
Monomial ideals and toric rings are closely related. By consider a Grobner basis we can always associated to any ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring a monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$, in some special situations the monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$ is square free. On the other hand given any monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, we can define the toric $K[I]\subset S$. In this paper we will study toric rings defined by Segre embeddings, we will prove that their $h-$ vectors coincides with the so called Simon Newcomb number's in probabilities and combinatorics. We solve the original questio…

We introduce the multigraded Hilbert scheme, which parametrizes all homogeneous ideals with fixed Hilbert function in a polynomial ring that is graded by any abelian group. Our construction is widely applicable, it provides explicit equations, and it allows us to prove a range of new results, including Bayer's conjecture on equations defining Grothendieck's classical Hilbert scheme and the construction of a Chow morphism for toric Hilbert schemes.
We introduce an elementary method to study the border rank of polynomials and tensors, analogous to the apolarity lemma. This can be used to describe the border rank of all cases uniformly, including those very special ones that resisted a systematic approach. We also define a border rank version of the variety of sums of powers and analyse its usefulness in studying tensors and polynomials with large symmetries. In particular, it can be applied to provide lower bounds for the border rank of some very interesting tensors, such as the matrix multiplication tensor. We work in a general setting, …
In this paper, we introduce the notion of "extension" of a toric variety and study its fundamental properties. This gives rise to infinitely many toric varieties with a special property, such as being set theoretic complete intersection or arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein) and having a Cohen-Macaulay tangent cone or a local ring with non-decreasing Hilbert function, from just one single example with the same property, verifying Rossi's conjecture for larger classes and extending some results appeared in literature.
In this note, generalizing earlier work of Nakajima and Vasserot, we study the (equivariant) cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes of certain toric surfaces and establish their connections to Fock space and Jack polynomials.
We prove a closed formula for leading Gopakumar- Vafa BPS invariants of local Calabi-Yau geometries given by the canonical line bundles of toric Fano surfaces. It shares some similar features with Goettsche-Yau-Zaslow formula: Connection with Hilbert schemes, connection with quasimodular forms, and quadratic property after suitable transformation. In Part I of this paper we will present the case of projective plane, more general cases will be presented in Part II.
Let $G$ be a finite abelian subgroup of $PGL(r-1,K)=\mathrm{Aut}(¶^{r-1}_K)$. In this paper, we prove that the normalization of the $G$-orbit Hilbert scheme $\Hilb^G(¶^{r-1})$ is described as a toric variety, which corresponds to the Gröbner fan for some homogeneous ideal $I$ of $K[x_1, ..., x_r]$.
Given a polarized manifold there are obstructions for asymptotic Chow semistability described as integral invariants. One of them is an obstruction to the existence for the first Chern class of the polarization to admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric. A natural question is whether or not the other obstructions are linearly dependent on the obstruction to the existence of a cscK metric. The purpose of this paper is to see that this is not the case by exhibiting toric Fano threefolds in which these obstructions span at least two dimension. To see this we show that on toric Fano…
We propose a refined but natural notion of toric degenerations that respect a given embedding and show that within this framework a Gorenstein Fano variety can only be degenerated to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety if it is embedded via its anticanonical embedding. This also gives a precise criterion for reflexive polytopes to appear, which might be required for applications in mirror symmetry. For the proof of this statement we will study polytopes whose polar dual is a lattice polytope. As a byproduct we generalize a connection between the number of lattice points in a rational convex polyto…
Anderson proved that the finite generation of the value semigroup $Γ_{Y_\bullet}(D)$ in the construction of the Newton-Okounkov body $Δ_{Y_\bullet}(D)$ induces a toric degeneration of the corresponding variety $X$ to some toric variety $X_0$. In this case the normalization of $X_0$ is the normal toric variety corresponding to the rational polytope $Δ_{Y_\bullet}(D)$. Since $X_0$ is not normal in general this correspondence is rather implicit. In this article we investigate in conditions to assure that $X_0$ is normal, by comparing the Hilbert polynomial with the Ehrhart polynomial. In the case…
Integrals of characteristic classes of tautological sheaves on the Hilbert scheme of points on a surface frequently arise in enumerative problems. We use the K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas theory of certain toric Calabi-Yau threefolds to study K-theoretic variants of such expressions. We study limits of the K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas partition function of a toric Calabi-Yau threefold under certain one-parameter subgroups called slopes, and formulate a condition under which two such limits coincide. We then explicitly compute the limits of components of the partition function under so-called pr…
We present an explicit expression for the normalized height of a projective toric variety. This expression decomposes as a sum of local contributions, each term being the integral of a certain function, concave and piecewise linear-affine. More generally, we obtain an explicit expression for the normalized multiheight of a torus with respect to several monomial embeddings. The set of functions introduced behaves as an arithmetic analog of the polytope classically associated with the torus action. Besides the formulae for the height and multiheight, we show that this object behaves in a natural…
In this paper, we develop several techniques for computing the higher G-theory and K-theory of quotient stacks. Our main results for computing these groups are in terms of spectral sequences. We show that these spectral sequences degenerate in the case of many toric stacks, thereby providing an efficient computation of their higher K-theory. We apply our main results to give explicit description for the higher K-theory for many smooth toric stacks. As another application, we describe the higher K-theory of toric stack bundles over smooth base schemes.
The main purpose of this notes is to supplement the paper reid, which treated Minimal Model Program (also called Mori's Program) on toric varieties. We calculate lengths of negative extremal rays of toric varieties. As an application, we obtain a generalization of Fujita's conjecture for singular toric varieties. We also prove that every toric variety has a small projective toric $\bQ$-factorialization.
We study the greatest common divisor problem for torus invariant blowing-up morphisms of nonsingular toric Fano varieties. Our main result applies the theory of Okounkov bodies together with an arithmetic form of Cartan's Second Main theorem, which has been established by Ru and Vojta. It also builds on Silverman's geometric concept of greatest common divisor. As a special case of our results, we deduce a bound for the generalized greatest common divisor of pairs of nonzero algebraic numbers.
Let $S$ be the affine plane regarded as a toric variety with an action of the 2-dimensional torus $T$. We study the equivariant Chow ring $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ of the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb^n(S)$ with equivariant coefficients inverted. We compute base change formulas in $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ between the natural bases introduced by Nakajima, Ellingsrud and Strømme, and the classical basis associated with the fixed points. We compute the equivariant commutation relations between creation/annihilation operators. We express the class of the small diagonal in $Hilb^n(S)$ in terms of the equiva…
For a finite abelian group G in GL(n,k), we describe the coherent component Y_theta of the moduli space M_theta of theta-stable McKay quiver representations. This is a not-necessarily-normal toric variety that admits a projective birational morphism to A^n/G obtained by variation of GIT quotient. As a special case, this gives a new construction of Nakamura's G-Hilbert scheme that avoids the (typically highly singular) Hilbert scheme of |G|-points in A^n. To conclude, we describe the toric fan of Y_theta and hence calculate the quiver representation corresponding to any point of Y_theta.
The main result of the work ``The nilpotence conjecture in K-theory of toric varieties'' is extended to all coefficient fields of characteristic 0, thus covering the class of genuine toric varieties.
Let X be an affine T-variety. We study two different quotients for the action of T on X: the toric Chow quotient X/_CT and the toric Hilbert scheme H. We introduce a notion of the main component H_0 of H which parameterizes general T-orbit closures in X and their flat limits. The main component U_0 of the universal family U over H is a preimage of H_0. We define an analogue of a universal family W_X over the main component of the X/_CT. We show that the toric Chow morphism restricted on the main components lifts to a birational projective morphism from U_0 to W_X. The variety W_X also provides…
The Chow quotient of a toric variety by a subtorus, as defined by Kapranov-Sturmfels-Zelevinsky, coarsely represents the main component of the moduli space of stable toric varieties with a map to a fixed projective toric variety, as constructed by Alexeev and Brion. We show that, after endowing both spaces with the structure of a logarithmic stack, the resulting spaces are isomorphic. Along the way, we construct the Chow quotient stack and demonstrate several properties that it satisfies.
The main result of this paper is that every (separated) toric variety which has a semigroup structure compatible with multiplication on the underlying torus is necessarily affine. In the course of proving this statement, we also give a proof of the fact that every separated toric variety may be constructed from a certain fan in a Euclidean space. To our best knowledge, this proof differs essentially from the ones which can be found in the literature.
The purpose of this paper and its prequel (Toric Stacks I) is to introduce and develop a theory of toric stacks which encompasses and extends the notions of toric stacks defined in [Laf02, BCS05, FMN10, Iwa09, Sat12, Tyo12], as well as classical toric varieties. While the focus of the prequel is on how to work with toric stacks, the focus of this paper is how to show a stack is toric. For toric varieties, a classical result says that any normal variety with an action of a dense open torus arises from a fan. In [FMN09, Theorem 7.24], it is shown that a smooth separated DM stack with an action o…
In this note we introduce a new family of non-commutative spaces that we call non-commutative toric varieties and we describe some of their main properties. The main technical tool in this investigation is a natural extension of LVM-theory for the irrational case. In order to introduce the moduli space of (non-commutative) toric varieties we use variations on the notion of diffeology as models for non-commutative spaces.
An irrational toric variety X is an analytic subset of the simplex associated to a finite configuration of real vectors. The positive torus acts on X by translation, and we consider limits of sequences of these translations. Our main result identifies all possible Hausdorff limits of translations of X as toric degenerations using elementary methods and the geometry of the secondary fan of the vector configuration. This generalizes work of Garcia-Puente et al., who used algebraic geometry and work of Kapranov, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky, when the vectors were integral.
We investigate Gauss maps of (not necessarily normal) projective toric varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. The main results are as follows: (1) The structure of the Gauss map of a toric variety is described in terms of combinatorics in any characteristic. (2) We give a developability criterion in the toric case. In particular, we show that any toric variety whose Gauss map is degenerate must be the join of some toric varieties in characteristic zero. (3) As applications, we provide two constructions of toric varieties whose Gauss maps have some given data …
We combine work of Cox on the total coordinate ring of a toric variety and results of Eisenbud-Mustata-Stillman and Mustata on cohomology of toric and monomial ideals to obtain a formula for computing the Euler characteristic of a Weil divisor D on a complete simplicial toric variety in terms of graded pieces of the Cox ring and Stanley-Reisner ring. The main point is to use Alexander duality to pass from the toric irrelevant ideal, which appears in the computation of the Euler characteristic of D, to the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the fan, which is used in defining the Chow ring. The formula al…
Let G be a connected linear algebraic group over a field k. We say that G is toric-friendly if for any field extension K/k and any maximal K-torus T in G the group G(K) has only one orbit in (G/T)(K). Our main result is a classification of semisimple (and under certain assumptions on k, of connected) toric-friendly groups.
