Viro method plays an important role in the study of topology of real algebraic hypersurfaces. The T-primitive hypersurfaces we study here appear as the result of Viro's combinatorial patchworking when one starts with a primitive triangulation. We show that the Euler characteristic of the real part of such a hypersurface of even dimension is equal to the signature of its complex part. We use this result to prove the existence of maximal surfaces in some three-dimensional toric varieties, namely those corresponding Nakajima polytopes. In fact, these results belong to the field of tropical geometry and we explain how they can be understood tropically.
For every positive integer $n\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ we define an `Euler polynomial' $\mathscr{E}_n(t)\in \mathbb{Z}[t]$, and observe that for a fixed $n$ all Chern numbers (as well as other numerical invariants) of all smooth hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$ may be recovered from the single polynomial $\mathscr{E}_n(t)$. More generally, we show that all Chern classes of hypersurfaces in a smooth variety may be recovered from its top Chern class.
We derive a general formula for the Euler characteristic of a fibration of projective hypersurfaces in terms of invariants of an arbitrary base variety. When the general fiber is an elliptic curve, such formulas have appeared in the physics literature in the context of calculating D-brane charge for M-/F-theory and type-IIB compactifications of string vacua. While there are various methods for computing Euler characteristics of algebraic varieties, we prove a base-independent pushforward formula which reduces the computation of the Euler characteristic of relative hypersurfaces to simple algeb…
In this paper, we give a Prym-Tjurin construction for the cohomology and the Chow groups for a cubic hypersurface. On the space of lines meeting a given rational curve, there is the incidence correspondence. This correspondence induces an action on both of the primitive cohomology and the primitive Chow groups. We first show that this action satisfies a quadratic equation. Then the Abel-Jacobi homomorphism induces an isomorphism between the primitive cohomology of the cubic hypersurface and the Prym-Tjurin part of the above action. This also holds for Chow groups with rational coefficients.
Let $k$ be a field and let $\text{GW}(k)$ be the Grothendieck-Witt ring of virtual non-degenerate symmetric bilinear forms over $k$. We develop methods for computing the quadratic Euler characteristic $χ(X/k)\in \text{GW}(k)$ for $X$ a smooth hypersurface in a projective space or a weighted projective space. We raise the question of a quadratic refinement of classical conductor formulas and find such a formula for the degeneration of a smooth hypersurface $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ to the cone over a smooth hyperplane section of $X$; we also find a similar formula in the weighted homogeneous ca…
In this note we studied the primitive varieties of general type with $q(X) = dim(X)$ and non-birational bicanonical maps. Let $X$ be such a variety. We bounded the degree of its bicanonical map. If moreover the Albanese variety $Alb(X)$ is simple, we proved that the Euler number $χ(ω_X) = 1$, and $|2K_X|$ separates the points mapped to the same general point via the Albanese map.
Maximum likelihood degree of a projective variety is the number of critical points of a general likelihood function. In this note, we compute the Maximum likelihood degree of Fermat hypersurfaces. We give a formula of the Maximum likelihood degree in terms of the constants $β_{μ, ν}$, which is defined to be the number of complex solutions to the system of equations $z_1^ν=z_2^ν=\cdots=z_μ^ν=1$ and $z_1+\cdots +z_μ+1=0$.
We prove a "strong" Durfee-type inequality for isolated hypersurface surface singularities, which implies Durfee's strong conjecture for such singularities with non-negative topological Euler number of the exceptional set of the minimal resolution.
We generalize Griffiths' theorem on the Hodge filtration of the primitive cohomology of a smooth projective hypersurface, using the local Bernstein-Sato polynomials, the V-filtration of Kashiwara and Malgrange along the hypersurface and the Brieskorn module of the global defining equation of the hypersurface.
Generalizing the star graphs of Müller-Stach and Westrich, we describe a class of graphs whose associated graph hypersurface is equipped with a non-trivial torus action. For such graphs, we show that the Euler characteristic of the corresponding projective graph hypersurface complement is zero. In contrast, we also show that the Euler characteristic in question can take any integer value for a suitable graph. This disproves a conjecture of Aluffi in a strong sense.
We prove the structure theorem of the intersection complexes of toric varieties in the category of mixed Hodge modules. This theorem is due to Bernstein, Khovanskii and MacPherson for the underlying complexes with rational coefficients. As a corollary the Euler characteristic Hodge numbers of non-degenerate toric hypersurface can be determined by the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers together with combinatorial data of Newton polyhedra. This is used implicitly in an explicit formula by Batyrev--Borisov. Note that a formula for the Euler characteristic subtotal Hodge numbers in terms …
We show that a generic real projective $n$-dimensional hypersurface of odd degree $d$, such that $4(n-2)=\binom{d+3}3$, contains "many" real 3-planes, namely, in the logarithmic scale their number has the same rate of growth, $d^3\log d$, as the number of complex 3-planes. This estimate is based on the interpretation of a suitable signed count of the 3-planes as the Euler number of an appropriate bundle.
We give a new formula for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a hypersurface in a nonsigular compact complex analytic variety. In particular this formula generalizes our previous result on the Euler characteristic of such a hypersurface. Two different approaches are presented. The first is based on the theory of characteristic cycle and the works of Sabbah, Briancon-Maisonobe-Merle, and Le-Mebkhout. In particular, this approach leads to a simple proof of a formula of Aluffi for the above mentioned class. The second approach uses Verdier's specialization property of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPhe…
We define nondegenerate tropical complete intersections imitating the corresponding definition in complex algebraic geometry. As in the complex situation, all nonzero intersection multiplicity numbers between tropical hypersurfaces defining a nondegenerate tropical complete intersection are equal to 1. The intersection multiplicity numbers we use are sums of mixed volumes of polytopes which are dual to cells of the tropical hypersurfaces. We show that the Euler characteristic of a real nondegenerate tropical complete intersection depends only on the Newton polytopes of the tropical polynomials…
We show that minimal models of nondegenerated hypersufaces defined by Laurent polynomials with a $d$-dimensional Newton polytope $Δ$ are Calabi-Yau varieties $X$ if and only if the Fine interior of $Δ$ consists of a single lattice point. We give a combinatorial formula for computing the stringy Euler number of $X$. This formula allows to test mirror symmetry in cases when $Δ$ is not a reflexive polytope. In particular we apply this formula to pairs of lattice polytopes $(Δ, Δ^{\vee})$ that appear in the Mavlyutov's generalization of the polar duality for reflexive polytopes. Some examples of M…
We consider the problem of geometrically approximating a complex analytic curve in the plane by the image of a polynomial parametrization $t \mapsto (x_1(t),x_2(t))$ of bidegree $(d_1,d_2)$. We show the number of such curves is the number of primitive necklaces on $d_1$ white beads and $d_2$ black beads. We show that this number is odd when $d_1=d_2$ is squarefree and use this to give a partial solution to a conjecture by Rababah. Our results naturally extend to a generalization regarding hypersurfaces in higher dimensions. There, the number of parametrized curves of multidegree $(d_1,\ldots,d…
We study the Euler characteristic of the Milnor fibre of a hypersurface singularity. This invariant is given in terms of the Euler characteristic of a fibre in between the original singularity and its Milnor fibre and in terms of the Euler characteristics associated to strata of the in-between fibre. From this we can deduce a result of Massey and Siersma regarding singularities with a one-dimensional critical locus. The result is also applied to the study of equisingularity. The famous Briançon-Speder-Teissier result states that a family of isolated hypersurface singularities is equisingular i…
We prove a bound conjectured by Itenberg on the Betti numbers of real algebraic hypersurfaces near non-singular tropical limits. These bounds are given in terms of the Hodge numbers of the complexification. To prove the conjecture we introduce a real variant of tropical homology and define a filtration on the corresponding chain complex inspired by Kalinin's filtration. The spectral sequence associated to this filtration converges to the homology groups of the real algebraic variety and we show that the terms of the first page are tropical homology groups with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-coefficients. The …
We show that a generic real projective n-dimensional hypersurface of degree 2n-1 contains "many" real lines, namely, not less than (2n-1)!!, which is approximately the square root of the number of complex lines. This estimate is based on the interpretation of a suitable signed count of the lines as the Euler number of an appropriate bundle.
This paper is concerned with the primitive cohomology of a smooth projective hypersurface considered as a linear representation for its automorphism group. Using the Lefschetz-Riemann-Roch formula, the character of this representation is described on each piece of the Hodge decomposition. A consequence about the existence of smooth symmetric hypersurfaces that are stable under the standard irreducible permutation representation of the symmetric group on homogeneous coordinates is drawn.
It was shown by Kuznetsov that complete intersections of $n$ generic quadrics in ${\mathbb P}^{2n-1}$ are related by Homological Projective Duality to certain non-commutative (Clifford) varieties which are in some sense birational to double covers of ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ ramified over symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. Mirror symmetry predicts that the Hodge numbers of the complete intersections of quadrics must coincide with the appropriately defined Hodge numbers of these double covers. We observe that these numbers must be different from the well-known Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers, el…
A theorem due to D. Bernstein states that Euler characteristic of a hypersurface defined by a polynomial f in (C\{0})^n is equal (upto a sign) to n! times volume of the Newton polyhedron of f. This result is related to algebaric torus actions and toric varieties. In this thesis, I prove that one can generalize the above result to actions of reductive groups with spherical orbits. That is, if a reductive group acts linearly on a vector space such that generic orbits are spherical, one can compute the Euler characteristic of generic hyperplane sections of a generic orbit in terms of combinatoria…
Let X be a K3 surface with a primitive ample divisor H, and let $β=2[H]\in H_2(X, \mathbf Z)$. We calculate the Gromov-Witten type invariants $n_β$ by virtue of Euler numbers of some moduli spaces of stable sheaves. Eventually, it verifies Yau-Zaslow formula in the non primitive class $β$.
We obtain a precise relation between the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a subvariety of projective space and the Euler characteristics of its general linear sections. In the case of a hypersurface, this leads to simple proofs of formulas of Dimca-Papadima and Huh for the degrees of the polar map of a homogeneous polynomial, extending these formula to any algebraically closed field of characteristic~0, and proving a conjecture of Dolgachev on 'homaloidal' polynomials in the same context. We generalize these formulas to subschemes of higher codimension in projective space. We also describe a…
We study the relation between a certain graded part of the Jacobian ring of a projective hypersurface and a certain graded quotient for the Hodge filtration of its primitive cohomology, in the case that the hypersurface has at most isolated singularities. We distinguish a class of singularities for which this relation is best possible. The main examples refer to the surface case.
In characteristic zero, the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of a hypersurface can be described as the minimal polynomial of the action of an Euler operator on a suitable D-module. We consider the analogous D-module in positive characteristic, and use it to define a sequence of Bernstein-Sato polynomials (corresponding to the fact that we need to consider also divided powers Euler operators). We show that the information contained in these polynomials is equivalent to that given by the F-jumping exponents of the hypersurface, in the sense of Hara and Yoshida.
What polynomial in the coefficients of a system of algebraic equations should be called its discriminant? We prove a package of facts that provide a possible answer. Let us call a system typical, if the homeomorphic type of its set of solutions does not change as we perturb its (non-zero) coefficients. The set of all atypical systems turns out to be a hypersurface in the space of all systems of k equations in n variables, whose monomials are contained in k given finite sets. This hypersurface B contains all systems that have a singular solution, this stratum is conventionally called the discri…
Consider generalizations of the boundary singularities B_n of the functions on the real line to the case where the boundary consists of a finite number of l points. These singularities B_n^l could also arise in higher dimensional case, when the boundary is an immersed hypersurface. We obtain a particular recurrent equation on the numbers of connected components of very nice M-morsification spaces of the multiboundary singularities B_n^l. This helps us to express the numbers K_n^l (for l=2,3,4...) by Bernoulli-Euler numbers. We also find the corresponding generating functions.
Let $V$ be a closed subscheme of a projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. We give an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, Euler characteristic and Segre class of $ V$. The algorithm can be implemented using either symbolic or numerical methods. The algorithm is based on a new method for calculating the projective degrees of a rational map defined by a homogeneous ideal. Using this result and known formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a projective hypersurface and the Segre class of a projective variety in terms of the projective degrees of certain rational maps we…
Let $n\geq 1$ be an integer, $\mathcal L \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a compact smooth affine real hypersurface, not necessarily connected. We prove that there exists $c>0$ and $d_0\geq 1$, such that for any $d\geq d_0$, any smooth complex projective hypersurface $Z$ in $\mathbb{C} P^n$ of degree $d$ contains at least $ c\dim H_*(Z, \mathbb{R})$ disjoint Lagrangian submanifolds diffeomorphic to $\mathcal L$, where $Z$ is equipped with the restriction of the Fubini-Study symplectic form. If moreover the connected components of $\mathcal L$ have non vanishing Euler characteristic, which implies that…
