We study the relation between a certain graded part of the Jacobian ring of a projective hypersurface and a certain graded quotient for the Hodge filtration of its primitive cohomology, in the case that the hypersurface has at most isolated singularities. We distinguish a class of singularities for which this relation is best possible. The main examples refer to the surface case.
We consider some conditions under which a smooth projective variety X is actually the projective space. We also extend to the case of positive characteristic some results in the theory of vector bundle adjunction. We use methods and techniques of the so called Mori theory, in particular the study of rational curves on projective manifolds.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective $n$-fold such that $q(X)=0$ and $L$ a globally generated, big line bundle on $X$ such that $h^0(K_X+(n-2)L) >0$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the adjoint systems $|K_X+kL|$ to be birational for $k \geq n-1$. In particular, for Calabi-Yau $n$-folds we generalize and prove parts of a conjecture of Gallego and Purnaprajna.
This paper gives an explicit formula for the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of certain 2-dimensional polyhedra in terms of invariants of surface quotient singularities. Also, a formula for the dimension of the space of quasi-homogeneous polynomials of a given degree is derived. This admits an interpretation as a Numerical Adjunction Formula for singular curves on the weighted projective plane.
We investigate effectiveness and ampleness of adjoint divisors of the form $aL+bK_X$, where $L$ is a suitably positive line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$ and $a,b$ are positive integers.
Let $E$ be an ample vector bundle of rank $r$ on a projective variety $X$ with only log-terminal singularities. We consider the nefness of adjoint divisors $K_X+(t-r)det(E)$ when $t>=dim(X)$ and $t>r$. As a corollary, we classify pairs $(X,E)$ with $c_r$-sectional genus zero.
Let (X,L) be a quasi polarized pairs, i.e. X is a normal complex projective variety and L is a nef and big line bundle on it. We study, up to birational equivalence, the positivity (nefness) of the adjoint bundles K_X + rL for high rational number r. For this we run a Minimal Model Program with scaling relative to the divisor K_X +rL. We give some applications, namely the classification up to birational equivalence of quasi polarized pairs with sectional genus 0,1 and of embedded projective varieties X < P^N with degree smaller than 2codim(X) +2.
In this paper, we derive new adjunction inequalities for embedded surfaces with non-negative self-intersection number in four-manifolds. These formulas are proved by using relations between Seiberg-Witten invariants which are induced from embedded surfaces. To prove these relations, we develop the relevant parts of a Floer theory for four-manifolds which bound circle-bundles over Riemann surfaces.
In this paper we describe projective curves and surfaces such that almost all their hyperplane sections are projectively equivalent. Our description is complete for curves and close to being complete for smooth surfaces. In the appendix we make some remarks on connections between the mentioned property of a projective variety and its adjunction properties.
We prove that a smooth projective variety of dimension n is isomorphic to projective n-space iff the canonical class is -(n+1)-times an ample divisor. In characteristic zero this was proved by Kobayashi-Ochiai. We also extend the second adjunction theorem of Ionescu and Fujita to arbitrary characteristic.
In this paper we study singularities defined by the action of Frobenius in characteristic $p > 0$. We prove results analogous to inversion of adjunction along a center of log canonicity. For example, we show that if $X$ is a Gorenstein normal variety then to every normal center of sharp $F$-purity $W \subseteq X$ such that $X$ is $F$-pure at the generic point of $W$, there exists a canonically defined $\bQ$-divisor $Δ_{W}$ on $W$ satisfying $(K_X)|_W \sim_{\bQ} K_{W} + Δ_{W}$. Furthermore, the singularities of $X$ near $W$ are "the same" as the singularities of $(W, Δ_{W})$. As an application,…
A birational map from a projective space onto a not too much singular projective variety with a single irreducible non-singular base locus scheme (special birational transformation) is a rare enough phenomenon to allow meaningful and concise classification results. We shall concentrate on transformations defined by quadratic equations onto some varieties (especially projective hypersurfaces of small degree), where quite surprisingly the base loci are interesting projective manifolds appearing in other contexts; for example, exceptions for adjunction theory, small degree or small codimensional …
We investigate the projective normality of smooth, linearly normal surfaces of degree 9. All non projectively normal surfaces which are not scrolls over a curve are classified. Results on the projective normality of surface scrolls are also given. One of the reasons that brought us to look at this question is our desire to find examples for a long standing problem in adjunction theory. Andreatta followed by a generalization by Ein and Lazarsfeld posed the problem of classifying smooth n-dimensional varieties (X,L) polarized with a very ample line bundle L, such that the adjoint linear system |…
We construct a linearly normal smooth rational surface S of degree 11 and sectional genus 8 in the projective fivespace. Surfaces satisfying these numerical invariants are special, in the sense that $h^1(\mathscr{O}_S(1))>0$. Our construction is done via linear systems and we describe the configuration of points blown up in the projective plane. We also present a short list, generated by the adjunction mapping, of linear systems whom are the only possibilities for other families of surfaces with the prescribed numerical invariants.
Let $X$ be a closed subscheme of codimension $e$ in a projective space. One says that $X$ satisfies property ${\bf N}_{d,p}$, if the $i$-th syzygies of the homogeneous coordinate ring are generated by elements of degree $<d+i$ for $0\le i\le p$. The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties satisfying property ${\bf N}_{2,e}$ are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: projective surfaces in $\Bbb P^5$ satisfying property ${\bf N}_{3,3}$. In particular, we give a classifi…
These are lecture notes of a course given in Pisa, SNS, in february 2002. They provide a classification of holomorphic foliations of nongeneral type on compact Kaehler surfaces.
We prove the algebraic version of a conjecture of C. Sabbah on the existence of the good formal structure for meromorphic flat connections on surfaces after some blow up.
This paper is intended both an introduction to the algebraic geometry of holomorphic Poisson brackets, and as a survey of results on the classification of projective Poisson manifolds that have been obtained in the past twenty years. It is based on the lecture series delivered by the author at the Poisson 2016 Summer School in Geneva. The paper begins with a detailed treatment of Poisson surfaces, including adjunction, ruled surfaces and blowups, and leading to a statement of the full birational classification. We then describe several constructions of Poisson threefolds, outlining the classif…
In this paper we prove, using a refinement of Terracini's Lemma, a sharp lower bound for the degree of (higher) secant varieties to a given projective variety, which extends the well known lower bound for the degree of a variety in terms of its dimension and codimension in projective space. Moreover we study varieties for which the bound is attained proving some general properties related to tangential projections, e.g. these varieties are rational. In particular we completely classify surfaces (and curves) for which the bound is attained. It turns out that these surfaces enjoy some maximality…
Using inversion of adjunction, we deduce from Nadel's theorem a vanishing property for ideals sheaves on projective varieties, a special case of which recovers a result due to Bertram--Ein--Lazarsfeld. This enables us to generalize to a large class of projective schemes certain bounds on Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity previously obtained by Bertram--Ein--Lazarsfeld in the smooth case and by Chardin--Ulrich for locally complete intersection varieties with rational singularities. Our results are tested on several examples.
We prove that every non-trivial structure of a rationally connected fibre space (and so every structure of a Mori-Fano fibre space) on a general (in the sense of Zariski topology) hypersurface of degree $M$ in the $(M+1)$-dimensional projective space for $M\geq 14$ is given by a pencil of hyperplane sections. In particular, the variety $V$ is non-rational and its group of birational self-maps coincide with the group of biregular automorphisms and is therefore trivial. The proof is based on the techniques of the method of maximal singularities and the inversion of adjunction.
We characterize the monodromies of projective structures with fuchsian-type singularities. Namely, any representation from the fundamental group of a Riemann surface of finite-type in $PSL_2(\mathbb{C})$ can be represented as the holonomy of branched projective structure with fuchsian-type singularities over the cusps. We made a geometrical/topological study of all local conical projective structures whose Schwarzian derivative admits a simple pole at the cusp. Finally, we explore isomonodromic deformations of such projective structures and the problem of minimizing angles.
We solve a certain case of the minimal genus problem for embedded surfaces in elliptic 4-manifolds. The proofs involve a restricted transitivity property of the action of the orientation preserving diffeomorphism group on the second homology. In the case we consider we get the minimal possible genus allowed by the adjunction inequality.
We investigate int-amplified endomorphisms on normal projective surfaces. We prove that the output of the equivariant MMP is either a Q-abelian surface, a (equivariant) quasi-étale quotient of a smooth projective surface, a Mori dream space, or a projective cone of an elliptic curve.
The goal of this article is to study the equations and syzygies of embeddings of rational surfaces and certain Fano varieties. Given a rational surface X and an ample and base-point-free line bundle L on X, we give an optimal numerical criterion for L to satisfy property Np. This criterion turns out to be a characterization of property Np if X is anticanonical. We also prove syzygy results for adjunction bundles and a Reider type theorem for higher syzygies. For certain Fano varieties we also prove results on very ampleness and higher syzygies.
We construct examples of non-projective normal proper algebraic surfaces and discuss the pathological behaviour of their Neron-Severi group. Our surfaces are birational to the product of a projective line and a curve of higher genus.
We show that an abelian surface embedded in P^N by a very ample line bundle L of type (1,2d) is projectively normal if and only if d>=4. This completes the study of the projective normality of abelian surfaces embedded by complete linear systems.
For every p >= 5, we determine all Z_p-invariant nonsingular quartic surfaces in the three dimensional projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In some cases, we also determine their full projective automorphism groups.
We bound the genus of a projective curve lying on a complete intersection surface in terms of its degree and the degrees of the defining equations of the surface on which it lies.
We prove that the formal completion of a complex projective surface along a rigid smooth curve with trivial normal bundle determines the birational equivalence class of the surface.
We construct a smooth complex projective rational surface with infinitely many mutually non-isomorphic real forms. This gives the first definite answer to a long standing open question if a smooth complex projective rational surface has only finitely many non-isomorphic real forms or not.
It is proved that a smooth rational surface in projective four-space, which is ruled by cubics or quartics has degree at most 12. It is also proved that a smooth rational surface in projective four-space which is the image of Fn by a linear system with "simple base points" (see text) has degree at most 12.
Given a web (multi-foliation) and a linear system on a projective surface we construct divisors cutting out the locus where some element of the linear system has abnormal contact with the leaf of the web. We apply these ideas to reobtain a classical result by Salmon on the number of lines on a projective surface. In a different vein, we investigate the number of lines and of disjoint lines contained in a projective surface and tangent to a contact distribution.
The aim of this paper is to present two different constructions of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. In particular, we establish the existences of five different families of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with the prescribed invariants.
The paper is a generalization of a result of I. Dolgachev, M. Mendes Lopes, and R. Pardini. We prove that a smooth projective complex surface $X$, not necessarily minimal, contains $h^{1,1}(X)-1$ disjoint $(-2)$-curves if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to a minimal rational ruled surface ${\bf F}_2$ or ${\bf P}^2$ or a fake projective plane. We also describe smooth projective complex surfaces $X$ with $h^{1,1}(X)-2$ disjoint $(-2)$-curves.
We characterize the integral Zariski decomposition of a smooth projective surface with Picard number 2 to partially solve a problem of B. Harbourne, P. Pokora, and H. Tutaj-Gasinska [Electron. Res. Announc. Math. Sci. 22 (2015), 103--108].
We show that the minimal model program on any smooth projective surface is realized as a variation of the moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.
We prove that a smooth surface, non of general type, in projective four-space, which lies on a quartic hypersurface with isolated singularities has degree at most 27 (in fact we prove a slightly more general result).
We consider possibly singular rational projective k*-surfaces and provide an explicit description of the unit component of the automorphism group in terms of isotropy group orders and intersection numbers of suitable invariant curves. As an application, we characterize the almost homogeneous rational projective k*-surfaces and we specify the two-dimensional groups acting almost transitively as well as the corresponding homogeneous spaces.
The following conjecture arose out of discussions between B. Harbourne, J. Roé, C. Cilberto and R. Miranda: for a smooth projective surface $X$ there exists a positive constant $c_X$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every prime divisor $C$ on $X$. We show that the conjecture is true for some smooth projective surfaces with Picard number 2.
In the previous paper, we established an elementary bound for numbers of points of surfaces in the projective $3$-space over ${\Bbb F}_q$. In this paper, we give the complete list of surfaces that attain the elementary bound. Precisely those surfaces are the hyperbolic surface, the nonsingular Hermitian surface, and the surface of minimum degree containing all ${\Bbb F}_q$-points of the $3$-space.
We prove a bound on the number of lines on a smooth degree-d surface in three-dimensional projective space for $d \geq 3$. This bound improves a bound due to Segre and renders some of his arguments rigorous. It is the best known bound for $d \geq 6$.
We determine the complete list of anticanonically embedded quasi smooth log del Pezzo surfaces in weighted projective 3-spaces. We prove that many of these admit a Kähler-Einstein metric and most of them do not have tigers.
The aim of this paper is to get some results about ruled surfaces which configure a projective theory of scrolls and ruled surfaces. Our ideas follow the viewpoint of Corrado Segre, but we employ the contemporaneous language of locally free sheaves. The results complete the exposition given by R. Hartshorne and they have not appeared before in the contemporaneous literature.
We give a complete classification of Q_l-cohomology projective planes with isolated ADE-singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle in odd characteristic. This leads to a beautiful relation with certain Enriques surfaces which parallels the situation in characteristic zero, yet displays intriguing subtleties.
In this paper we present a way of computing the degree of the secant (resp., tangent) variety of a smooth projective surface, under the assumption that the divisor giving the embedding in the projective space is $3$-very ample. This method exploits the link between these varieties and the Hilbert scheme $0$-dimensional subschemes of length $2$ of the surface.
Fake projective planes are smooth complex surfaces of general type with Betti numbers equal to that of the usual projective plane. Recent explicit constructions of fake projective planes embed them via their bicanonical embedding in $\mathbb P^9$. In this paper, we study Keum's fake projective plane $(a=7, p=2, \{7\}, D_3 2_7)$ and use the equations of \cite{Borisov} to construct an embedding of fake projective plane in $\mathbb P^5$. We also simplify the 84 cubic equations defining the fake projective plane in $\mathbb P^9$.
We show that there exists a fine moduli space for torsion-free sheaves on a projective surface, which have a "good framing" on a big and nef divisor. This moduli space is a quasi-projective scheme. This is accomplished by showing that such framed sheaves may be considered as stable pairs in the sense of Huybrechts and Lehn. We characterize the obstruction to the smoothness of the moduli space, and discuss some examples on rational surfaces.
Let $L$ be an ample line bundle over a smooth projective toric surface $X$. Then $L$ corresponds to a very ample lattice polytope $P$ that encodes many geometric properties of $L$. In this article, by studying $P$, we will give some necessary and sufficient numerical criteria for the adjoint series $|K_X+L|$ to be either nef or (very) ample.
The aim of this paper is to describe algebraic K3 surfaces with an even set of rational curves or of nodes. Their minimal possible Picard number is nine. We completely classify these K3 surfaces and after a carefull analysis of the divisors contained in the Picard lattice we study their projective models, giving necessary and sufficient conditions to have an even set. Moreover we investigate their relation with K3 surfaces with a Nikulin involution.
In this article, we give a description of the closed cone of curves of the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over a smooth projective variety $X$. Using duality, we then calculate the nef cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over some special surfaces $X$ and for some special bundles on $X$. As an application, we also calculate the Seshadri constants of semistable ample vector bundles with vanishing discriminant on some special ruled surfaces at special points.
We show that a moduli space of slope-stable sheaves over a K3 surface is an irreducible hyperkähler manifold if and only if its second Betti number is the sum of its Hodge numbers $h^{2,0}$, $h^{1,1}$ and $h^{0,2}$.
