We consider asymptotic dimension of coarse spaces. We analyse coarse structures induced by metrisable compactifications. We calculate asymptotic dimension of coarse cell complexes. We calculate the asymptotic dimension of certain negatively curved spaces, e.g. for complete, simply connected manifolds with bounded, strictly negative sectional curvature.
We introduce the notion of asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalence of metric spaces. We show that it is strictly weaker than coarse Lipschitz equivalence. We study its impact on the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. Then we focus on Banach spaces. We prove that, for $2\leq p<\infty$, being linearly isomorphic to $\ell_p$ is stable under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz equivalences. Finally, we establish a version of the Gorelik principle in this setting and apply it to prove the stability of various properties of asymptotic uniform smoothness of Banach spaces under asymptotic coarse Lipschitz…
This paper establishes a new combinatorial framework for the study of coarse median spaces, bridging the worlds of asymptotic geometry, algebra and combinatorics. We introduce a simple and entirely algebraic notion of coarse median algebra which simultaneously generalises the concepts of bounded geometry coarse median spaces and classical discrete median algebras. We study the coarse median universe from the perspective of intervals, with a particular focus on cardinality as a proxy for distance. In particular we prove that the metric on a quasi-geodesic coarse median space of bounded geometry…
In this note we prove that the Kalton interlaced graphs do not equi-coarsely embed into the James space $\mathcal J$ nor into its dual $\mathcal J^*$. It is a particular case of a more general result on the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Kalton graphs into quasi-reflexive spaces with a special asymptotic stucture. This allows us to exhibit a coarse invariant for Banach spaces, namely the non equi-coarse embeddability of this family of graphs, which is very close to but different from the celebrated property $\mathcal Q$ of Kalton. We conclude with a remark on the coarse geometry of the J…
In this paper we show that the asymptotic dimension of an unbounded proper metric space is bounded above by a coarse analog of Ponomarev's cofinal dimension of topological spaces, which we call the coarse cofinal dimension. We also show that asymptotic dimension is bounded below by the cofinal dimension of the Higson corona by existing results of Miyata, Austin, and Virk. We do this by introducing several constructions in the theory of coarse proximity spaces. In particular we introduce the inverse limit of coarse proximity spaces. We end with some open problems.
We generalize the notions of asymptotic dimension and coarse embeddings from metric spaces to quantum metric spaces in the sense of Kuperberg and Weaver. We show that quantum asymptotic dimension behaves well with respect to metric quotients and direct sums, and is preserved under quantum coarse embeddings. Moreover, we prove that a quantum metric space that equi-coarsely contains a sequence of reflexive quantum expanders must have infinite asymptotic dimension. This is done by proving a quantum version of a vertex-isoperimetric inequality for expanders, based upon a previously known edge-isop…
We study the geometry of warped cones over free, minimal isometric group actions and related constructions of expander graphs. We prove a rigidity theorem for the coarse geometry of such warped cones: Namely, if a group has no abelian factors, then two such warped cones are quasi-isometric if and only if the actions are finite covers of conjugate actions. As a consequence, we produce continuous families of non-quasi-isometric expanders and superexpanders. The proof relies on the use of coarse topology for warped cones, such as a computation of their coarse fundamental groups.
The main goal of this note is to prove a coarse analogue of Factorization Theorems in Dimension Theory: Let $f: X \rightarrow Y$ be a coarsely continuous map. Then $f$ factors through coarsely continuous maps $g : X \rightarrow Z$ and $h : Z \rightarrow Y$ with asymptotic dimension of $Z$ at most asymptotic dimension of $X$ and the weight of $Z$ at most the weight of $Y$.
We construct secondary cup and cap products on coarse (co-)homology theories from given cross and slant products. They are defined for coarse spaces relative to weak generalized controlled deformation retracts. On ordinary coarse cohomology, our secondary cup product agrees with a secondary product defined by Roe. For coarsifications of topological coarse (co-)homology theories, our secondary cup and cap products correspond to the primary cup and cap products on Higson dominated coronas via transgression maps. And in the case of coarse $\mathrm{K}$-theory and -homology, the secondary products …
We prove that for any coarse spaces $X_1,\dots,X_n$ of asymptotic dimension $\ge 1$, the product $X=X_1\times\dots\times X_n$ has asymptotic dimension $\ge n$. Another result states that a finitary coare space $Z$ has $\mathrm{asdim}(Z)\ge n$ if $Z$ admits an almost free action of the group $\mathbb Z^n$. We deduce these results from the following combinatorial result (that generalized the the Hex Theorem of Gale): for any cover $\mathcal F$ of a discrete box $K=k_1\times \dots \times k_n$, either some set $F\in\mathcal F$ contains a chain connecting two opposite faces of $K$ or there exists a…
This paper studies the asymptotic product of two metric spaces. It is well defined if one of the spaces is visual or if both spaces are geodesic. In this case the asymptotic product is the pullback of a limit diagram in the coarse category. Using this product construction we can define a homotopy theory on coarse metric spaces in a natural way. We prove that all finite colimits exist in the coarse category.
The objective of this series is to study metric geometric properties of (coarse) disjoint unions of amenable Cayley graphs. We employ the Cayley topology and observe connections between large scale structure of metric spaces and group properties of Cayley accumulation points. In this Part I, we prove that a disjoint union has property A of G. Yu if and only if all groups appearing as Cayley accumulation points in the space of marked groups are amenable. As an application, we construct two disjoint unions of finite special linear groups (and unimodular linear groups) with respect to two systems…
We prove that the class of reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely rigid, meaning that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space $Y$, then $X$ is also reflexive and asymptotic-$c_0$. In order to achieve this result we provide a purely metric characterization of this class of Banach spaces. This metric characterization takes the form of a concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the Hamming graphs, which is rigid under coarse embeddings. Using an example of a quasi-reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space, we show that this concentration inequality…
The objective of this series is to study metric geometric properties of disjoint unions of amenable Cayley graphs by group properties of the Cayley accumulation points in the space of marked groups. In this Part II, we prove that a disjoint union admits a fibred coarse embedding into a Hilbert space (in a generalized sense) if and only if the Cayley boundary of the sequence in the space of marked groups is uniformly a-T-menable. We furthermore extend this result to ones with other target spaces. By combining our main results with constructions of Arzhantseva--Osajda and Osajda, we construct tw…
Dranishnikov and Zarichnyi constructed a universal space in the coarse category of spaces of bounded geometry of asymptotic dimension $0$. In this paper we construct universal spaces in the coarse category of separable (respectively, proper) metric spaces of asymptotic dimension $0$. Our methods provide an alternative proof of Dranishnikov-Zarichnyi result.
The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into eve…
Our main result about rigidity of Roe algebras is the following: if $X$ and $Y$ are metric spaces with bounded geometry such that their Roe algebras are $*$-isomorphic, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent provided that either $X$ or $Y$ contains no sparse subspaces consisting of ghostly measured asymptotic expanders. Note that this geometric condition generalises the existing technical assumptions used for rigidity of Roe algebras. Consequently, we show that the rigidity holds for all bounded geometry spaces which coarsely embed into some $L^p$-space for $p\in [1,\infty)$. Moreover, we al…
We formulate and prove a Bott periodicity theorem for an $\ell^p$-space ($1\leq p<\infty$). For a proper metric space $X$ with bounded geometry, we introduce a version of $K$-homology at infinity, denoted by $K_*^{\infty}(X)$, and the Roe algebra at infinity, denoted by $C^*_{\infty}(X)$. Then the coarse assembly map descents to a map from $\lim_{d\to\infty}K_*^{\infty}(P_d(X))$ to $K_*(C^*_{\infty}(X))$, called the coarse assembly map at infinity. We show that to prove the coarse Novikov conjecture, it suffices to prove the coarse assembly map at infinity is an injection. As a result, we show…
A compact Polish foliated space is considered. Part of this work studies coarsely quasi-isometric invariants of leaves in some residual saturated subset when the foliated space is transitive. In fact, we also use "equi-" versions of this kind of invariants, which means that the definition is satisfied with the same constants by some given set of leaves. For instance, the following properties are proved. Either all dense leaves without holonomy are equi-coarsely quasi-isometric to each other, or else there exist residually many dense leaves without holonomy such that each of them is coarsely qu…
We introduce a generalization for bounded geometry that we call bounded scale measure. We show that bounded scale measure is a coarse invariant unlike bounded geometry. We then show equivalent definitions for spaces with bounded scale measure and show other properties that spaces with bounded scale measure satisfy. From there, we generalize property A from uniformly discrete metric spaces to large scale spaces with bounded geometry. Lastly, we construct a definition for property A for large scale spaces with bounded scale measure and show that this definition of property A is a coarse invarian…
