The purpose of this paper is to study families of Artinian or one dimensional quotients of a polynomial ring $R$ with a special look to level algebras. Let $\GradAlg^H(R)$ be the scheme parametrizing graded quotients of $R$ with Hilbert function $H$. Let $B \to A$ be any graded surjection of quotients of $R$ with Hilbert function $H_B$ and $H_A$, and h-vectors $h_B=(1,h_1,...,h_j,...)$ and $h_A$, respectively. If $\depth A = \dim A \leq 1$ and $A$ is a ``truncation'' of $B$ in the sense that $h_A=(1,h_1,...,h_{j-1},α,0,0,...)$ for some $α\leq h_j$, then we show there is a close relationship between $\GradAlg^{H_A}(R)$ and $\GradAlg^{H_B}(R)$ concerning e.g. smoothness and dimension at the points $(A)$ and $(B)$ respectively, provided $B$ is a complete intersection or provided the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $A$ is at least 3 (sometimes 2) larger than the regularity of $B$. In the complete intersection case we generalize this relationship to ``non-truncated'' Artinian algebras $A$ which are compressed or close to being compressed. For more general Artinian algebras we describe the dual of the tangent and obstruction space of deformations in a manageable form which we make rather explicit for level algebras of Cohen-Macaulay type 2. This description and a linkage theorem for families allow us to prove a conjecture of Iarrobino on the existence of at least two irreducible components of $\GradAlg^H(R)$, $H=(1,3,6,10,14,10,6,2)$, whose general elements are Artinian level algebras of type 2.
We deal with the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) for Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebras of codimension $3.$ We prove that many Gorenstein sequences force the WLP for such algebras. Moreover for every Gorenstein sequence $H$ of codimension 3 we found several Gorenstein Betti sequences compatible with $H$ which again force the WLP. Finally we show that for every Gorenstein Betti sequence the general Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebra with such Betti sequence has the WLP.
We study the general Jordan type of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras, it is a finer invariant than Weak and Strong Lefschetz properties for those algebras. We prove that their Jordan types are determined by the rank of certain Mixed Hessians. We give a description of the possible Jordan types for algebras of low socle degree and low codimension.
In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. We prove also some strong Lefschetz properties for the same kind of Artinian algebras in higher codimensions. Moreover, we analyze some loci that come naturally into the picture of "special" Artinian algebras: for them, we give some geometric descriptions and show a connection between the non emptiness of the so-called non-Lefschetz locus in degree $1$ and the "lifting" of…
In this paper we classify, up to analytic isomorphism, the family of almost stretched Artinian complete intersection A=R/I with a given Hilbert function, in the case R is a power series ring with an arbitrary number of variables.
We introduce a family of standard bigraded binomial Artinian Gorenstein algebras, whose combinatoric structure characterizes the ones presented by quadrics. These algebras provide, for all socle degree grater than two and in sufficiently large codimension with respect to the socle degree, counter-examples to Migliore-Nagel conjectures, see \cite{MN1} and \cite{MN2}. One of them predicted that Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadratics should satisfy the weak Lefschetz property. We also prove a generalization of a Hessian criterion for the Lefschetz properties given by Watanabe, see \…
The classification of local Artinian Gorenstein algebras is equivalent to the study of orbits of a certain non-reductive group action on a polynomial ring. We give an explicit formula for the orbits and their tangent spaces. We apply our technique to analyse when an algebra is isomorphic to its associated graded algebra. We classify algebras with Hilbert function (1, 3, 3, 3, 1), obtaining finitely many isomorphism types, and those with Hilbert function (1, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1). We consider fields of arbitrary, large enough, characteristic.
Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is grea…
We classify the orbits of nets of conics under the action of the projective linear group and we determine the specializations of these orbits, using geometric and algebraic methods. We study related geometric questions, as the parametrization of planar cubics. We show that Artinian algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,3,3,0) determined by nets, can be smoothed - deformed to a direct sum of fields; and that algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,r,2,0), determined by pencils of quadrics, can also be smoothed. In a Historical Appendix A we describe related work prior to 1977. In an Update Appendix B we …
The Jordan type of an Artinian algebra is the Jordan block partition associated to multiplication by a generic element of the maximal ideal. We study the Jordan type for Artinian Gorenstein (AG) local algebras A, and the interaction of Jordan type with the symmetric decomposition of the Hilbert function H(A). We give examples of Gorenstein sequences H for which the family Gor(H) of AG algebras having Hilbert function H has several irreducible components, each corresponding to a symmetric decomposition of H. The component structure results from the intersection of two opposing filtrations of th…
This article concerns commutative algebras over a field $k$ of characteristic zero which are finite dimensional as vectorspaces, and particularly those of such algebras which are graded. Here the term graded is applied to non-negatively graded algebras $A$ with $A_0$ reduced and finite dimensional. Thus the trivial grading $A=A_0$ is only allowed if $A$ is a product of finite field extensions of $k$. It has been conjectured (G. Cortiñas, S. Geller, C. Weibel; The Artinian Berger Conjecture. Math. Zeitschrift {\bf 228} 3 (1998) 569-588) that for all finite dimensional algebras $A$ which are not…
Let A = bigoplus_{i >= 0} A_i be a standard graded Artinian K-algebra, where char K = 0. Then A has the Weak Lefschetz property if there is an element ell of degree 1 such that the multiplication times ell : A_i --> A_{i+1} has maximal rank, for every i, and A has the Strong Lefschetz property if times ell^d : A_i --> A_{i+d} has maximal rank for every i and d. The main results obtained in this paper are the following. 1) EVERY height three complete intersection has the Weak Lefschetz property. (Our method, surprisingly, uses rank two vector bundles on P^2 and the Grauert-Mulich theorem.) 2) W…
Let GradAlg(H) be the scheme parameterizing graded quotients of R=k[x_0,...,x_n] with Hilbert function H (it is a subscheme of the Hilbert scheme of P^n if we restrict to quotients of positive dimension, see definition below). A graded quotient A=R/I of codimension c is called standard determinantal if the ideal I can be generated by the t by t minors of a homogeneous t by (t+c-1) matrix (f_{ij}). Given integers a_0\le a_1\le ...\le a_{t+c-2} and b_1\le ...\le b_t, we denote by W_s(\underline{b};\underline{a}) the stratum of GradAlg(H) of determinantal rings where f_{ij} \in R are homogeneous …
We give a characterization of the Lefschetz elements in Artinian Gorenstein rings over a field of characteristic zero in terms of the higher Hessians. As an application, we give new examples of Artinian Gorenstein rings which do not have the strong Lefschetz property.
We study properties of the resolution of almost Gorenstein artinian algebras $R/I,$ i.e. algebras defined by ideals $I$ such that $I=J+(f),$ with $J$ Gorenstein ideal and $f\in R.$ Such algebras generalize the well known almost complete intersection artinian algebras. Then we give a new explicit description of the resolution and of the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection ideals of codimension $3$ and we characterize the ideals whose graded Betti numbers can be achieved using artinian monomial ideals.
We show a number of properties of the commutator algebra of a nilpotent matrix over a field. In particular we determine the simple modules of the commutator algebra. Then the results are applied to prove that certain Artinian complete intersections have the strong Lefscehtz property.
We define the strong Lefschetz property for finite graded modules over graded Artinian algebras whose grading is not necessarily standard. We show that most results which have been obtained for Artinian algebras with standard grading can be extended for non-standard grading. Our results on the strong Lefschetz property for non-standard grading can be used to prove that certain Artinian complete intersections with standard grading have the strong Lefschetz property.
In a recent paper it has been established that over an Artinian ring R all two-dimensional polynomial automorphisms having Jacobian determinant one are tame if R is a Q-algebra. This is a generalization of the famous Jung-Van der Kulk Theorem, which deals with the case that R is a field (of any characteristic). Here we will show that for tameness over an Artinian ring, the Q-algebra assumption is really needed: we will give, for local Artinian rings with square-zero principal maximal ideal, a complete description of the tame automorphism subgroup. This will lead to an example of a non-tame aut…
In this paper we give an effective characterization of Hilbert functions and polynomials of standard algebras over an Artinian equicharacteristic local ring; the cohomological properties of such algebras are also studied. We describe algorithms to check the admissibility of a given function or polynomial as a Hilbert function or polynomial, and to produce a standard algebra with a given Hilbert function.
We prove that a sequence $h$ of non-negative integers is the Hilbert function of some Artinian Gorenstein algebra with the strong Lefschetz property if and only if it is an SI-sequence. This generalizes the result by T. Harima which characterizes the Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the weak Lefschetz property. We also provide classes of Artinian Gorenstein algebras obtained from the ideal of points in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that some of their higher Hessians have non-vanishing determinants. Consequently, we provide families of such algebras satisfying the SLP.
We give an alternate proof for a theorem of Migliore and Nagel. In particular, we show that if $\mathcal H$ is an SI-sequence, then the collection of Betti diagrams for all Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras with the weak Lefschetz property and Hilbert function $\mathcal H$ has a unique largest element.

Let A be a standard graded Artinian algebra over a field of characteristic zero and let z be a linear form in A. We define the central simple modules for each such pair (A, z). Assume that A is Gorenstein. Then we prove that A has the strong Lefschetz property if and only if there exists a linear form z in A such that all central simple modules of the pair (A,z) have the strong Lefschetz property. In the course of proof we need to extend the definition of the strong Lefschetz property to finite graded modules over graded Artinian algebra, which previously was defined only for standard graded A…
We study Jordan types of linear forms for graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras having arbitrary codimension. We introduce rank matrices of linear forms for such algebras that represent the ranks of multiplication maps in various degrees. We show that there is a 1-1 correspondence between rank matrices and Jordan degree types. For Artinian Gorenstein algebras with codimension three we classify all rank matrices that occur for linear forms with vanishing third power. As a consequence, we show for such algebras that the possible Jordan types with parts of length at most four are uniquely determine…
In this paper, we study the dependence of the weak Lefschetz property of algebras defined by a special class of monomials ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficient in a field, to the characteristic of the base field.
We study the weak Lefschetz property of a class of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup generated by four natural numbers. We show that these algebras have the weak Lefschetz property whenever the initial degree of their defining ideal is small.
In this paper we study Hilbert functions and isomorphism classes of Artinian level local algebras via Macaulay's inverse system. Upper and lower bounds concerning numerical functions admissible for level algebras of fixed type and socle degree are known. For each value in this range we exhibit a level local algebra with that Hilbert function, provided that the socle degree is at most three. Furthermore we prove that level local algebras of socle degree three and maximal Hilbert function are graded. In the graded case the extremal strata have been parametrized by Cho and Iarrobino.
We study the problem of whether an arbitrary codimension three graded artinian Gorenstein algebra has the Weak Lefschetz Property. We reduce this problem to checking whether it holds for all compressed Gorenstein algebras of odd socle degree. In the first open case, namely Hilbert function (1,3,6,6,3,1), we give a complete answer in every characteristic by translating the problem to one of studying geometric aspects of certain morphisms from $\mathbb P^2$ to $\mathbb P^3$, and Hesse configurations in $\mathbb P^2$.
We describe the graded characters and Hilbert functions of certain graded artinian Gorenstein quotients of the polynomial ring which are also representations of the symmetric group. Specifically, we look at those algebras whose socles are trivial representations and whose principal apolar submodules are generated by the sum of the orbit of a power of a linear form.
We survey our recently proposed method for constructing biholomorphic invariants of quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities and, more generally, invariants of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras. The method utilizes certain polynomials associated to such algebras, called nil-polynomials, and we compare them with two other classes of polynomials that have also been used to produce invariants.
We introduce Artinian Gorenstein algebras defined by the face posets of regular polyhedra. We consider the strong Lefschetz property and Hodge--Riemann relation for the algebras. We show the strong Lefschetz property of the algebras for all Platonic solids. On the other hand, for some Platonic solids, we show that the algebras do not satisfy the Hodge--Riemann relation with respect to some strong Lefschetz elements.
We introduce the cohomological blow up of a graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra along a surjective map, which we term BUG (Blow Up Gorenstein) for short. This is intended to translate to an algebraic context the cohomology ring of a blow up of a projective manifold along a projective submanifold. We show, among other things, that a BUG is a connected sum, that it is the general fiber in a flat family of algebras, and that it preserves the strong Lefschetz property. We also show that standard graded compressed algebras are rarely BUGs, and we classify those BUGs that are complete intersecti…
Let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein algebra over an infinite field $k$ with either $\hbox{char}(k)=0$ or $\hbox{char}(k)>ν$, where $ν$ is the socle degree of $A$. To every such algebra and a linear projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the socle $\hbox {Soc}(A)$ of $A$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$, which is the graph of a polynomial map $P_π:\hbox{ker}\,π\to \hbox{Soc}(A)\simeq k$. Recently, the author and his collaborators have obtained the following surprising criterion: two Artinian Gorenstein algebras $A$, $\t…
We study the weak Lefschetz property of artinian Gorenstein algebras and in particular of artinian complete intersections. In codimension four and higher, it is an open problem whether all complete intersections have the weak Lefschetz property. For a given artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ we ask what linear forms are Lefschetz elements for this particular algebra, i.e., which linear forms $\ell$ give maximal rank for all the multiplication maps $\times \ell: [A]_i \longrightarrow [A]_{i+1}$. This is a Zariski open set and its complement is the \emph{non-Lefschetz locus}. For monomial complete …
The Jordan type of an element $\ell$ of the maximal ideal of an Artinian k-algebra A acting on an A-module M of k-dimension n, is the partition of n given by the Jordan block decomposition of the multiplication map $m_\ell$ on M. In general the Jordan type has more information than whether the pair $(\ell,M)$ is strong or weak Lefschetz. We develop basic properties of the Jordan type and their loci for modules over graded or local Artinian algebras. We as well study the relation of generic Jordan type of $A$ to the Hilbert function of $A$. We introduce and study a finer invariant, the Jordan d…
In a recent paper, F. Zanello showed that level Artinian algebras in 3 variables can fail to have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP), and can even fail to have unimodal Hilbert function. We show that the same is true for the Artinian reduction of reduced, level sets of points in projective 3-space. Our main goal is to begin an understanding of how the geometry of a set of points can prevent its Artinian reduction from having WLP, which in itself is a very algebraic notion. More precisely, we produce level sets of points whose Artinian reductions have socle types 3 and 4 and arbitrary socle degr…
This paper can be seen as a continuation of the works contained in the recent preprints [Za], of the second author, and [Mi], of Juan Migliore. Our results are: 1). There exist codimension three artinian level algebras of type two which do not enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). In fact, for $e\gg 0$, we will construct a codimension three, type two $h$-vector of socle degree $e$ such that {\em all} the level algebras with that $h$-vector do not have the WLP. We will also describe the family of those algebras and compute its dimension, for each $e\gg 0$. 2). There exist reduced level sets …
In this paper, we continue the study of which $h$-vectors $\H=(1,3,..., h_{d-1}, h_d, h_{d+1})$ can be the Hilbert function of a level algebra by investigating Artinian level algebras of codimension 3 with the condition $β_{2,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})=β_{1,d+1}(I^{\rm lex})$, where $I^{\rm lex}$ is the lex-segment ideal associated with an ideal $I$. Our approach is to adopt an homological method called {\it Cancellation Principle}: the minimal free resolution of $I$ is obtained from that of $I^{\rm lex}$ by canceling some adjacent terms of the same shift. We prove that when $β_{1,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})=β_{…
We study the symmetric subquotient decomposition of the associated graded algebras $A^*$ of a non-homogeneous commutative Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra $A$. This decomposition arises from the stratification of $A^*$ by a sequence of ideals $A^*=C_A(0)\supset C_A(1)\supset\cdots$ whose successive quotients $Q(a)=C(a)/C(a+1)$ are reflexive $A^*$ modules. These were introduced by the first author, and have been used more recently by several groups, especially those interested in short Gorenstein algebras, and in the scheme length (cactus rank) of forms. For us a Gorenstein sequence is an integ…
A connected sum construction for local rings was introduced in a paper by H. Ananthnarayan, L. Avramov, and W.F. Moore. In the graded Artinian Gorenstein case, this can be viewed as an algebraic analogue of the topological construction of the same name. We give two alternative description of this algebraic connected sum: the first uses algebraic analogues of Thom classes of vector bundles and Gysin homomorphisms, the second is in terms of Macaulay dual generators. We also investigate the extent to which the connected sum construction preserves the weak or strong Lefschetz property, thus provid…
This main purpose of this article is the unification of the Galois theory of algebraic differential equations by Umemura and the Galois theory of algebraic difference equations by Morikawa-Umemura in a common framework using Artinian simple D-module algebras, where D is a bialgebra. We construct the Galois hull of an extension of Artinian simple D-module algebras and define its Galois group, which consists of infinitesimal coordinate transformations fulfilling certain partial differential equations and which we call Umemura functor. We eliminate the restriction to characteristic 0 from the abo…
We introduce a new type of Hessian matrix, that we call Mixed Hessian. The mixed Hessian is used to compute the rank of a multiplication map by a power of a linear form in a standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra. In particular we recover the main result of \cite{MW} for identifying Strong Lefschetz elements, generalizing it also for Weak Lefschetz elements. This criterion is also used to give a new proof that Boolean algebras have the Strong Lefschetz Property (SLP). We also construct new examples of Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics that does not satisfy the Weak Lefsch…
Fix a pair of positive integers d and n. We create a ring R and a complex G of R-modules with the following universal property. Let P be a polynomial ring in d variables over a field and let I be a grade d Gorenstein ideal in P which is generated by homogeneous forms of degree n. If the resolution of P/I by free P-modules is linear, then there exists a ring homomorphism from R to P such that P tensor G is a minimal homogeneous resolution of P/I by free P-modules. Our construction is coordinate free.
In this article, we study the $k$-Lefschetz properties for non-Artinian algebras, proving that several known results in the Artinian case can be generalized in this setting. Moreover, we describe how to characterize the graded algebras having the $k$-Lefschetz properties using sectional matrices. We then apply the obtained results to the study of the Jacobian algebra of hyperplane arrangements, with particular attention to the class of free arrangements.
We first determine all height four Gorenstein sequences beginning H=(1,4,7,...), and we show that their first differences satisfy $ΔH_{\le j/2}$ is an O-sequence. We then study the family PGor(H) parametrizing all graded Artinian Gorenstein [AG] quotients A=R/I of the polynomial ring R=K[w,x,y,z] having a Hilbert function H as above. We give a structure theorem for such AG quotients with $I_2\cong < wx,wy,wz>$. For most H this subfamily forms an irreducible component of PGor(H), and for a slightly more restrictive set, PGor(H) has several irreducible components. M. Boij and others had already …
T. Harima and J. Watanabe studied the Lefschetz properties of free extension Artinian algebras $C$ over a base $A$ with fibre $B$. The free extensions are deformations of the usual tensor product, when $C$ is also Gorenstein, so are $A$ and $B$, and it is natural to ask for the relation among the Macaulay dual generators for the algebras. Writing a dual generator $F$ for $C$ as a homogeneous "polynomial" in $T$ and the dual variables for $B$, and given the dual generator for $B$, we give sufficient conditions on $F$ that ensure that $C$ is a free extension of $A={\sf k}[t]/(t^n)$ with fiber $B…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein local commutative and Noetherian $K$--algebra, with maximal ideal $M$. In the present paper we prove a structure theorem describing such kind of $K$--algebras satisfying $M^4=0$. We use this result in order to prove that such a $K$--algebra $A$ has rational Poincaré series and it is always smoothable in any embedding dimension, if $\dim_K M^2/M^3 \le 4$. We also prove that the generic Artinian Gorenstein local $K$--algebra with socle degree three has rational Poincaré series, in spite of the f…
