If A is a finite dimensional nilpotent associative algebra over a finite field k, the set G=1+A of all formal expressions of the form 1+a, where a is an element of A, has a natural group structure, given by (1+a)(1+b)=1+(a+b+ab). A finite group arising in this way is called an algebra group. One can also consider G as a unipotent algebraic group over k. We study representations of G from the point of view of ``geometric character theory'' for algebraic groups over finite fields (cf. G. Lusztig, ``Character sheaves and generalizations'', math.RT/0309134).
The main result of this paper is a construction of canonical injective ``base change maps'' between - the set of isomorphism classes of complex irreducible representations of G', and - the set of isomorphism classes of complex irreducible representations of G'', which commute with the natural action of the Galois group Gal(k''/k), where k' is a finite extension of k and k'' is a finite extension of k', and G', G'' are the finite algebra groups obtained from G by extension of scalars.
Let $G$ be a simple and simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic $p>0$. Assume that $p$ is good for the root system of $G$ and that the covering map $G_{sc} \rightarrow G$ is separable. In previous work we proved the existence of a (not necessarily unique) Springer isomorphism for $G$ that behaved like the exponential map on the resticted nullcone of $G$. In the present paper we give a formal definition of these maps, which we call `generalized exponential maps.' We provide an explicit and uniform construction of such maps for all root syste…
Let $R$ be a (not necessarily commutative) ring whose additive group is finitely generated and let $U_n(R) \subset GL_n(R)$ be the group of upper-triangular unipotent matrices over $R$. We study how the homology groups of $U_n(R)$ vary with $n$ from the point of view of representation stability. Our main theorem asserts that if for each $n$ we have representations $M_n$ of $U_n(R)$ over a ring $\mathbf{k}$ that are appropriately compatible and satisfy suitable finiteness hypotheses, then the rule $[n] \mapsto \widetilde{H}_i(U_n(R),M_n)$ defines a finitely generated OI-module. As a consequence…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of any characteristic except 2, and let $G = \GL_n(k)$ be the general linear group, regarded as an algebraic group over $k$. Using an algebro-geometric argument and Dynkin-Kostant theory for $G$ we begin by obtaining a canonical form for nilpotent $\Ad(G)$-orbits in $\glł_n(k)$ which is symmetric with respect to the non-main diagonal (i.e. it is fixed by the map $f : (x_{i,j})\mapsto (x_{n+1-j,n+1-i})$), with entries in $\{0,1\}$. We then show how to modify this form slightly in order to satisfy a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form…
Let G be a unipotent algebraic subgroup of some GL_m(C) defined over Q. We describe an algorithm for finding a finite set of generators of the subgroup G(Z) = G \cap GL_m(Z). This is based on a new proof of the result (in more general form due to Borel and Harish-Chandra) that such a finite generating set exists.
In this paper, we show that quantum twist maps, introduced by Lenagan-Yakimov, induce bijections between dual canonical bases of quantum nilpotent subalgebras. As a corollary, we show the unitriangular property between dual canonical bases and Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt type bases under the "reverse" lexicographic order. We also show that quantum twist maps induce bijections between certain unipotent quantum minors.
Let $k$ be a number field and $\mathbb{A}$ be its ring of adeles. Let $U$ be a unipotent group defined over $k$, and $σ$ a $k$-rational involution of $U$ with fixed points $U^+$. As a consequence of the results of C. Moore, the space $L^2(U(k)\backslash U_{\mathbb{A}})$ is multiplicity free as a representation of $U_{\mathbb{A}}$. Setting $p^+:ϕ\mapsto \int_{U^+(k)\backslash {U}_{\mathbb{A}}^+} ϕ(u)du$ to be the period integral attached to $σ$ on the space of smooth vectors of $L^2(U(k)\backslash U_{\mathbb{A}})$, we prove that if $Π$ is a topologically irreducible subspace of $L^2(U(k)\backsl…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p \ge 0$. We give a case-free proof of Lusztig's conjectures [Unipotent elements in small characteristic, {\em Transform. Groups} 10 (2005), 449--487] on so-called unipotent pieces. This presents a uniform picture of the unipotent elements of $G$ which can be viewed as an extension of the Dynkin--Kostant theory, but is valid without restriction on $p$. We also obtain analogous results for the adjoint action of $G$ on its Lie algebra $\gl$ and the coadjoint action of $G$ on $\gl^*$.
In this paper we give a complete description of the Howe correspondence of unipotent characters for a finite dual pair of a symplectic group and an even orthogonal group in terms of the Lusztig parametrization under a mild restriction of the characteristic of the base field. That is, the conjecture by Aubert-Michel-Rouquier is confirmed.
In this paper, we construct certain unipotent representations for the real orthogonal group and the metaplectic group in the sense of Vogan. Our construction is based on quantum induction which involves the compositions of even number of theta correspondences. In particular, our results imply that there are irreducible unitary representations attached to each special nilpotent orbit.
For each reductive algebraic group G we introduce and study unipotent bicrystals which serve as a regular version of birational geometric and unipotent crystals introduced earlier by the authors. The framework of unipotent bicrystals allows, on the one hand, to study systematically such varieties as Bruhat cells in G and their convolution products and, on the other hand, to give a new construction of many normal Kashiwara crystals including those for G^\vee-modules, where G^\vee is the Langlands dual groups. In fact, our analogues of crystal bases (which we refer to as crystals associated to G…
Denote by $N \subset SL_k$ the subgroup of unipotent upper triangular matrices. In this paper, we show that the dual canonical basis of $\mathbb{C}[N]$ (and base affine spaces) can be parameterized by semi-standard Young tableaux. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for every element in the the dual canonical basis using the data of the corresponding semistandard Young tableau. We apply our results to study cluster variables in $\mathbb{C}[N]$.
Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda have conjectured an explicit expression for the Plancherel density of the group of points of a reductive group defined over a local field $F$, in terms of local Langlands parameters. In these lectures we shall present a proof of these conjectures for Lusztig's class of representations of unipotent reduction if $F$ is $p$-adic and $G$ is of adjoint type and splits over an unramified extension of $F$. This is based on the author's paper [Spectral transfer morphisms for unipotent affine Hecke algebras, Selecta Math. (N.S.) 22 (2016), no. 4, 2143--2207]. More generally for…
In the paper, we establish the global basis theory for the bosonic extension $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ associated with an arbitrary generalized Cartan matrix. When $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ is of simply-laced finite type, it is isomorphic to the quantum Grothendieck ring of the Hernandez-Leclerc category over a quantum affine algebra. In this case, we show that the $(t,q)$-characters of simple modules in the Hernandez-Leclerc category correspond to the normalized global basis of $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$.
In this paper, we construct twist automorphisms on quantum unipotent cells, which are quantum analogues of the Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky twist automorphisms on unipotent cells. We show that those quantum twist automorphisms preserve the dual canonical bases of quantum unipotent cells. Moreover, we prove that quantum twist automorphisms are described by the syzygy functors for representations of preprojective algebras in the symmetric case. This is the quantum analogue of Geiß-Leclerc-Schröer's description, and Geiß-Leclerc-Schröer's results are essential in our proof. As a consequence, we sh…
We prove the following result in relative representation theory of a reductive p-adic group $G$: Let $U$ be the unipotent radical of a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$, and let $ψ$ be an arbitrary smooth character of $U$. Let $S \subset Irr(G)$ be a Zariski dense collection of irreducible representations of $G$. Then the span of the Bessel distributions $B_π$ attached to representations $π$ from $S$ is dense in the space $\mathcal S^*(G)^{U\times U,ψ\times ψ}$ of all $(U\times U,ψ\times ψ)$-equivariant distributions on $G.$ We base our proof on the following results: 1. The category of smooth…
Let $G$ be a finite Chevalley group. We are concerned with computing the values of the unipotent characters of $G$ by making use of Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. In this framework, one has to find the transformation between several bases for the class functions on $G$. In principle, this has been achieved by Lusztig and Shoji, but the underlying process involves some scalars which are still unknown in many cases. We shall determine these scalars in the specific case where $G$ is the (twisted or non-twisted) group of type $E_6$ over the finite field with $q$ elements, for $q$ a power o…
E. Opdam introduced the tool of spectral transfer morphism (STM) of affine Hecke algebras to study the formal degrees of unipotent discrete series representations. He established a uniqueness property of STM for the affine Hecke algebras associated of unipotent discrete series representations. Based on this result, Opdam gave an explanation for Lusztig's arithmetic/geometric correspondence (in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations of $p$-adic adjoint simple groups) in terms of harmonic analysis, and partitioned the unipotent discrete series representations into $L$-packets base…
This article is based on lectures given by the authors in 2005 and 2006. Our first goal is to present an introduction to the orbit method with an emphasis on the character theory of finite nilpotent groups. The second goal (motivated by a recent work of G. Lusztig) is to explain several nontrivial aspects of character theory for finite groups of the form $G(F_{q^n})$, where $G$ is a unipotent algebraic group over a finite field $F_q$. In particular, we introduce the notion of a character sheaf for a unipotent group, and provide a toy model for the representation-theoretic notion of an L-packet…
We compare two important bases of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group: the web basis and the Specht basis. The web basis has its roots in the Temperley-Lieb algebra and knot-theoretic considerations. The Specht basis is a classic algebraic and combinatorial construction of symmetric group representations which arises in this context through the geometry of varieties called Springer fibers. We describe a graph that encapsulates combinatorial relations between each of these bases, prove that there is a unique way (up to scaling) to map the Specht basis into the web representatio…
We generalise to the equivariant case a result of J. Denef and F. Loeser about trigonometric sums on tori; on the other hand, we study the Thom-Boardman stratification associated to the multiplication of global sections of line bundles on a curve. We prove a subtle inequaliity about the dimensions of these strata. Our motivation comes from the geometric Langlands program. Based on works of W. T. Gan, N. Gurevich, D. Jiang and S. Lysenko, we propose, for the reductive group $G$ of type $\mathrm G_2$, a conjectural construction of the automorphic sheaf whose Arthur parameter is unipotent and sub…
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type. In order to determine the character table of $G$, Lusztig developed the theory of character sheaves. In this framework, one has to find the transformation between two bases for the space of class functions on $G$, one of them being the irreducible characters of $G$, the other one consisting of characteristic functions associated to character sheaves. In principle, this has been achieved by Lusztig and Shoji, but the underlying process involves some scalars which are still unknown in many cases. The problem of specifying these scalars can be reduced to con…
Let Q be a finite quiver without oriented cycles, and let $Λ$ be the associated preprojective algebra. To each terminal representation M of Q (these are certain preinjective representations), we attach a natural subcategory $C_M$ of $mod(Λ)$. We show that $C_M$ is a Frobenius category, and that its stable category is a Calabi-Yau category of dimension 2. Then we develop a theory of mutations of maximal rigid objects of $C_M$, analogous to the mutations of clusters in Fomin and Zelevinsky's theory of cluster algebras. We show that $C_M$ yields a categorification of a cluster algebra $A(C_M)$, wh…
In this paper we introduce geometric crystals and unipotent crystals which are algebro-geometric analogues of Kashiwara's crystal bases. Given a reductive group G, let I be the set of vertices of the Dynkin diagram of G and T be the maximal torus of G. The structure of a geometric G-crystal on an algebraic variety X consists of a rational morphism γ:X-->T and a compatible family e_i:G_m\times X-->X, i\in I of rational actions of the multiplicative group G_m satisfying certain braid-like relations. Such a structure induces a rational action of W on X. Quite surprisingly, many interesting ration…
Let X be a scheme of finite type over a Noetherian base scheme S admitting a dualizing complex, and let U be an open subset whose complement has codimension at least 2. We extend the Deligne-Bezrukavnikov theory of perverse coherent sheaves by showing that a coherent middle extension (or intersection cohomology) functor from perverse sheaves on U to perverse sheaves on X may be defined for a much broader class of perversities than has previously been known. We also introduce a derived category version of the coherent middle extension functor. Under suitable hypotheses, we introduce a construct…
We compute the representation zeta functions of some finitely generated nilpotent groups associated to unipotent group schemes over rings of integers in number fields. These group schemes are defined by Lie lattices whose presentations are modelled on certain prehomogeneous vector spaces. Our method is based on evaluating $\mathfrak{p}$-adic integrals associated to certain rank varieties of matrices of linear forms.
We compute the based rings of two-sided cells corresponding to the unipotent class in $Sp_6(\mathbb C)$ with Jordan blocks (2211). The results also verify Lusztig's conjecture on the structure of the based rings of the two-sided cells of an affine Weyl group.
Let $(W, I)$ be a finite Coxeter group. In the case where $W$ is a Weyl group, Berenstein and Kazhdan in \cite{BK} constructed a monoid structure on the set of all subsets of $I$ using unipotent $χ$-linear bicrystals. In this paper, we will generalize this result to all types of finite Coxeter groups (including non-crystallographic types). Our approach is more elementary, based on some combinatorics of Coxeter groups. Moreover, we will calculate this monoid structure explicitly for each type.
For a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$, Kawanaka introduced the generalized Gelfand-Graev representations (GGGRs for short) of the finite group $G(\mathbb F_q)$ in the case where $q$ is a power of a good prime for $G$. This representation has been widely studied and used in various contexts. Recently, Geck proposed a conjecture, characterizing Lusztig's special unipotent classes in terms of weighted Dynkin diagrams. Based on this conjecture, he gave a guideline for extending the definition of GGGRs to the case where $q$ is a power of a bad prime…
We study invariants of the adjoint action of the unipotent group in the nilradical of a parabolic subalgebra of types Bn, Cn, Dn. We introduce the notion of expanded base in the set of positive roots and construct an invariant for every root of the expanded base. We prove that these invariants are algebraically independent. We also give an estimate of the transcendence degree of the field of invariants.
Dual canonical bases are expected to satisfy a certain (double) triangularity property by Leclerc's conjecture. We propose an analogous conjecture for common triangular bases of quantum cluster algebras. We show that a weaker form of the analogous conjecture is true. Our result applies to the dual canonical bases of quantum unipotent subgroups. It also applies to the $t$-analogs of $q$-characters of simple modules of quantum affine algebras.
The $G$-representation variety $R_G(Σ_g)$ parametrizes the representations of the fundamental groups of surfaces $π_1(Σ_g)$ into an algebraic group $G$. Taking $G$ to be the groups of $n \times n$ upper triangular or unipotent matrices, we compare two methods for computing algebraic invariants of $R_G(Σ_G)$. Using the geometric method initiated by González-Prieto, Logares and Muñoz, based on a Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT), we compute the virtual classes of $R_G(Σ_g)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties for $n = 1, \ldots, 5$. Introducing the notion of algebraic representatives we …
We propose an approach to Geiss-Leclerc-Schroer's conjecture on the cluster algebra structure on the coordinate ring of a unipotent subgroup and the dual canonical base. It is based on singular supports of perverse sheaves on the space of representations of a quiver, which give the canonical base.
In order to give a combinatorial descriptions of tensor product multiplicites for semisimple groups, it is useful to find bases for representations which are compatible with the actions of Chevalley generators of the Lie algebra. There are three known examples of such bases, each of which flows from geometric or algebraic mountain. Remarkably, each mountain gives the same combinatorial shadow: the crystal B(infty) and the Mirkovic-Vilonen polytopes. In order to distinguish between the three bases, we introduce measures supported on these polytopes. We also report on the interaction of these ba…
Let V be a 2n dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic. Let G = GL(V) and H = Sp_{2n} be the symplectic group contained in G. We call X = G/H \times V the exotic symmetric space, since its "unipotent" part is isomorphic to Kato's exotic nilcone. Let W be the Weyl group of type C_n. Kato established the Springer correspondence between irreducible characters of W and H-orbits in the exotic nilcone, based on the Ginzburg theory of affine Hecke algebras. In this paper, we develpoe a theory of character sheaves on X, and give an alternate proof for the Sprin…
We consider the quantum cluster algebras which are injective-reachable and introduce a triangular basis in every seed. We prove that, under some initial conditions, there exists a unique common triangular basis with respect to all seeds. This basis is parametrized by tropical points as expected in the Fock-Goncharov conjecture. As an application, we prove the existence of the common triangular bases for the quantum cluster algebras arising from representations of quantum affine algebras and partially for those arising from quantum unipotent subgroups. This result implies monoidal categorificat…
The Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon conjecture, reformulated and solved by S. Ariki, asserts that the K-group of the representations of the affine Hecke algebras of type A is isomorphic to the algebra of functions on the maximal unipotent subgroup of the group associated with the Lie algebra $gl_\infty$ or the affine Lie algebra $A^{(1)}_\ell$, and the irreducible representations correspond to the upper global bases. In this note, we formulate analogous conjectures for certain classes of irreducible representations of affine Hecke algebras of type B. We corrected typos.
It is known that many (upper) cluster algebras possess different kinds of good bases which contain the cluster monomials and are parametrized by the tropical points of cluster Poisson varieties. For a large class of upper cluster algebras (injective-reachable ones with full rank coefficients), we describe all of its bases with these properties. Moreover, we show the existence of the generic basis for them. In addition, we prove that Bridgeland's representation theoretic formula is effective for their theta functions (weak genteelness). Our results apply to (almost) all well-known cluster algeb…

We prove that the local components of an automorphic representation of an adelic semisimple group have equal rank in the sense defined earlier by the second author. Our theorem is an analogue of the results previously obtained by Howe, Li, Dvorsky--Sahi, and Kobayashi--Savin. Unlike previous works which are based on explicit matrix realizations and existence of parabolic subgroups with abelian unipotent radicals, our proof works uniformly for all of the (classical as well as exceptional) groups under consideration. Our result is an extension of the statement known for several semisimple groups…
The Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon-Ariki theory asserts that the K-group of the representations of the affine Hecke algebras of type A is isomorphic to the algebra of functions on the maximal unipotent subgroup of the group associated with a Lie algebra $g$ where $g$ is $gl_\infty$ or the affine Lie algebra $A^{(1)}_\ell$, and the irreducible representations correspond to the upper global bases. Recently, N. Enomoto and the first author presented the notion of symmetric crystals and formulated analogous conjectures for the affine Hecke algebras of type B. In this note, we present similar conjectures f…
