Let $\{a_\rr : \rr \in (\Z^+)^d \}$ be a $d$-dimensional array of numbers, for which the generating function $F(\zz) := \sum_\rr a_\rr \zz^\rr$ is meromorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. For example, $F$ may be a rational multivariate generating function. We discuss recent results that allow the effective computation of asymptotic expansions for the coefficients of $F$.
Our purpose is to illustrate the use of these techniques on a variety of problems of combinatorial interest. The survey begins by summarizing previous work on the asymptotics of univariate and multivariate generating functions. Next we describe the Morse-theoretic underpinnings of some new asymptotic techniques. We then quote and summarize these results in such a way that only elementary analyses are needed to check hypotheses and carry out computations.
The remainder of the survey focuses on combinatorial applications, such as enumeration of words with forbidden substrings, edges and cycles in graphs, polyominoes, and descents in permutations. After the individual examples, we discuss three broad classes of examples, namely functions derived via the transfer matrix method, those derived via the kernel method, and those derived via the method of Lagrange inversion. These methods have the property that generating functions derived from them are amenable to our asymptotic analyses, and we describe further machinery that facilitates computations for these classes of examples.
We consider the symmetric group $S_n$-module of the polynomial ring with $m$ sets of $n$ commuting variables and $m'$ sets of $n$ anti-commuting variables and show that the multiplicity of an irreducible indexed by the partition $λ$ (a partition of $n$) is the number of multiset tableaux of shape $λ$ satisfying certain column and row strict conditions. We also present a finite generating set for the ring of $S_n$ invariant polynomials of this ring.
We consider a number of combinatorial problems in which rational generating functions may be obtained, whose denominators have factors with certain singularities. Specifically, there exist points near which one of the factors is asymptotic to a nondegenerate quadratic. We compute the asymptotics of the coefficients of such a generating function. The computation requires some topological deformations as well as Fourier-Laplace transforms of generalized functions. We apply the results of the theory to specific combinatorial problems, such as Aztec diamond tilings, cube groves, and multi-set perm…
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for some irreducible components of $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-modules of multivariate diagonal harmonics. To this end we introduce a new path combinatorial object $T_{n,s}$ allowing us to give the formula directly in terms of Schur functions. This paper also contains formulas written in terms of Schur functions in the $q$ and $t$ variables for special cases of $\nabla(e_n)$, $\nabla^r(e_n)$ and $Δ'_{e_k}(e_n)$. We also give an interpretation in term of path to the adjoint dual Pieri rule applied on these $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-characters.
We give combinatorial proofs of two multivariate Cayley--Hamilton type theorems. The first one is due to Phillips (Amer. J. Math., 1919) involving $2k$ matrices, of which $k$ commute pairwise. The second one regards the mixed discriminant, a matrix function which has generated a lot of interest in recent times. Recently, the Cayley--Hamilton theorem for mixed discriminants was proved by Bapat and Roy (Comb. Math. and Comb. Comp., 2017). We prove a Phillips-type generalization of the Bapat--Roy theorem involving $2nk$ matrices, where $n$ is the size of the matrices, among which $nk$ commute pai…
We investigate properties of a multivariate function $E(m_1,m_2,...,m_r)$, called {\it orbicyclic}, that arises in enumerative combinatorics in counting non-isomorphic maps on orientable surfaces. $E(m_1,m_2,...,m_r)$ proves to be multiplicative, and a simple formula for its calculation is provided. It is shown that the necessary and sufficient conditions for this function to vanish is equivalent to familiar Harvey's conditions that characterize possible branching data of finite cyclic automorphism groups of Riemann surfaces.
We consider the enumeration of walks on the non-negative lattice $\mathbb{N}^d$, with steps defined by a set $\mathcal{S} \subset \{-1, 0, 1\}^d \setminus \{\mathbf{0}\}$. Previous work in this area has established asymptotics for the number of walks in certain families of models by applying the techniques of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV), where one encodes the generating function of a lattice path model as the diagonal of a multivariate rational function. Melczer and Mishna obtained asymptotics when the set of steps $\mathcal{S}$ is symmetric over every axis; in this sett…
Combinatorial aspects of multivariate diagonal invariants of the symmetric group are studied. As a consequence it is proved the existence of a multivariate extension of the classical Robinson-Schensted correspondence. Further byproduct are a pure combinatorial algorithm to describe the irreducible decomposition of the tensor product of two irreducible representations of the symmetric group, and new symmetry results on permutation enumeration with respect to descent sets.
Let $\sum_{β\in\nats^d} F_βx^β$ be a multivariate power series. For example $\sum F_βx^β$ could be a generating function for a combinatorial class. Assume that in a neighbourhood of the origin this series represents a nonentire function $F=G/H^p$ where $G$ and $H$ are holomorphic and $p$ is a positive integer. Given a direction $α\in\pnats^d$ for which the asymptotics are controlled by a smooth point of the singular variety $H = 0$, we compute the asymptotics of $F_{n α}$ as $n\to\infty$. We do this via multivariate singularity analysis and give an explicit formula for the full asymptotic expa…
Let $F(x)= \sum_{ν\in\NN^d} F_νx^ν$ be a multivariate power series with complex coefficients that converges in a neighborhood of the origin. Assume $F=G/H$ for some functions $G$ and $H$ holomorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. We derive asymptotics for the coefficients $F_{rα}$ as $r \to \infty$ with $rα\in \NN^d$ for $α$ in a permissible subset of $d$-tuples of positive reals. More specifically, we give an algorithm for computing arbitrary terms of the asymptotic expansion for $F_{rα}$ when the asymptotics are controlled by a transverse multiple point of the analytic variety $H = 0$. Thi…
In a seminal 2007 paper, Andrews introduced a class of combinatorial objects that generalize partitions called $k$-marked Durfee symbols. Multivariate rank generating functions for these objects have been shown by many to have interesting modularity properties at certain vectors of roots of unity. Motivated by recent studies of rank generating functions for strongly unimodal sequences, we apply methods of Andrews to define an analogous class of combinatorial objects called $k$-marked strongly unimodal symbols that generalize strongly unimodal sequences. We establish a multivariate rank generat…
We prove a multivariate Lagrange-Good formula for functionals of uncountably many variables and investigate its relation with inversion formulas using trees. We clarify the cancellations that take place between the two aforementioned formulas and draw connections with similar approaches in a range of applications.
We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and colored permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalizations of Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability-- and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.
Faà di Bruno's formula gives an expression for the derivatives of the composition of two real-valued functions. In this paper we prove a multivariate and synthesized version of Faà di Bruno's formula in higher dimensions, providing a combinatorial expression for the derivatives of chain compositions $F^{(1)} \circ \ldots \circ F^{(m)}$ of functions $F^{(l)} : \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{R}^N$ in terms of sums over labelled trees. We give several applications of this formula, including a new involution formula for the inversion of multivariate power series. We use this framework to outline a combi…
In this paper we solve combinatorial and algebraic problems associated with a multivariate identity first considered by S. Sherman wich he called an analog to the Witt identity. We extend previous results obtained for the univariante case.
Let F be the quotient of an analytic function with a product of linear functions. Working in the framework of analytic combinatorics in several variables, we compute asymptotic formulae for the Taylor coefficients of F using multivariate residues and saddle-point approximations. Because the singular set of F is the union of hyperplanes, we are able to make explicit the topological decompositions which arise in the multivariate singularity analysis. In addition to effective and explicit asymptotic results, we provide the first results on transitions between different asymptotic regimes, and pro…
We study the weighted partition function for lozenge tilings, with weights given by multivariate rational functions originally defined by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019) in the context of the factorial Schur functions. We prove that this partition function is symmetric for large families of regions. We employ both combinatorial and algebraic proofs.
We present a quantitative, statistical analysis of random lambda terms in the de Bruijn notation. Following an analytic approach using multivariate generating functions, we investigate the distribution of various combinatorial parameters of random open and closed lambda terms, including the number of redexes, head abstractions, free variables or the de Bruijn index value profile. Moreover, we conduct an average-case complexity analysis of finding the leftmost-outermost redex in random lambda terms showing that it is on average constant. The main technical ingredient of our analysis is a novel …
In his lost notebook, Ramanujan listed 5 identities related to the false theta function $$f(q)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty (-1)^nq^{n(n+1)/2}.$$ A new combinatorial interpretation and proof of one of these identities is given. The methods of the proof allow for new multivariate generalizations of this identity. Additionally, the same technique can be used to obtained a combinatorial interpretation of another one of the identities.
Based on results by Brugallé and Mikhalkin, Fomin and Mikhalkin give formulas for computing classical Severi degrees $N^{d, δ}$ using long-edge graphs. In 2012, Block, Colley and Kennedy considered the logarithmic version of a special function associated to long-edge graphs appeared in Fomin-Mikhalkin's formula, and conjectured it to be linear. They have since proved their conjecture. At the same time, motivated by their conjecture, we consider a special multivariate function associated to long-edge graphs that generalizes their function. The main result of this paper is that the multivariate …
We introduce and study a multivariate function that counts nowhere-zero flows on a graph G, in which each edge of G has an individual capacity. We prove that the associated counting function is a piecewise-defined polynomial in these capacities, which satisfy a combinatorial reciprocity law that incorporates totally cyclic orientations of G.
Motivated by applications in combinatorial geometry, we consider the following question: Let $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_m)$ be an $m$-partition of a positive integer $n$, $S_i \subseteq \mathbb{C}^{λ_i}$ be finite sets, and let $S:=S_1 \times S_2 \times \ldots \times S_m \subset \mathbb{C}^n$ be the multi-grid defined by $S_i$. Suppose $p$ is an $n$-variate degree $d$ polynomial. How many zeros does $p$ have on $S$? We first develop a multivariate generalization of Combinatorial Nullstellensatz that certifies existence of a point $t \in S$ so that $p(t) \neq 0$. Then we show that a natural multivari…
Goulden and Jackson (1996) introduced, using Jack symmetric functions, some multivariate generating series $ψ(x, y, z; 1, 1+β)$ with an additional parameter $β$ that may be interpreted as a continuous deformation of the rooted bipartite maps generating series. Indeed, it has the property that for $β\in \{0,1\}$, it specializes to the rooted, orientable (general, i.e. orientable or not, respectively) bipartite maps generating series. They made the following conjecture: coefficients of $ψ$ are polynomials in $β$ with positive integer coefficients that can be written as a multivariate generating …
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for obtaining generating functions for counting words in a free monoid by occurrences of a set of subwords. We introduce a generalization of the cluster method for monoid networks, which generalize the combinatorial framework of free monoids. As a sample application of the generalized cluster method, we compute bivariate and multivariate generating functions counting Motzkin paths---both with height bounded and unbounded---by statistics corresponding to the number of occurrences of various subwords, yielding both closed-form and continued f…
We combine tools from homotopy continuation solvers with the methods of analytic combinatorics in several variables to give the first practical algorithm and implementation for the asymptotics of multivariate rational generating functions not relying on a non-algorithmically checkable `combinatorial' non-negativity assumption. Our homotopy implementation terminates on examples from the literature in three variables, and we additionally describe heuristic methods that terminate and correctly predict asymptotic behaviour in reasonable time on examples in even higher dimension. Our results are im…
