Random diffeomorphisms with bounded absolutely continuous noise are known to possess a finite number of stationary measures. We discuss dependence of stationary measures on an auxiliary parameter, thus describing bifurcations of families of random diffeomorphisms. A bifurcation theory is developed under mild regularity assumptions on the diffeomorphisms and the noise distribution (e.g. smooth diffeomorphisms with uniformly distributed additive noise are included). We distinguish bifurcations where the density function of a stationary measure varies discontinuously or where the support of a stationary measure varies discontinuously.
We establish that generic random diffeomorphisms are stable. Densities of stable stationary measures are shown to be smooth and to depend smoothly on an auxiliary parameter, except at bifurcation values. The bifurcation theory explains the occurrence of transients and intermittency as the main bifurcation phenomena in random diffeomorphisms. Quantitative descriptions by means of average escape times from sets as functions of the parameter are provided. Further quantitative properties are described through the speed of decay of correlations as function of the parameter.
Random endomorphisms are studied in one dimension; we show that stable one dimensional random endomorphisms occur open and dense and that in one parameter families bifurcations are typically isolated. We classify codimension one bifurcations for one dimensional random endomorphisms; we distinguish three possible kinds, the random saddle node, the random homoclinic and the random boundary bifurcation. The theory is illustrated on families of random circle diffeomorphisms and random unimodal maps.
We prove that any diffeomorphism of a compact manifold can be approximated in topology C1 by another diffeomorphism exhibiting a homoclinic bifurcation (a homoclinic tangency or a heterodimensional cycle) or by one which is essentially hyperbolic (it has a finite number of transitive hyperbolic attractors with open and dense basin of attraction).
We study main bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms having a non-transversal homoclinic orbit to a saddle-node fixed point. On a parameter plane we build a bifurcation diagram for single-round periodic orbits lying entirely in a small neighbourhood of the homoclinic orbit. Also a relation of our results to well-known codimension one bifurcations of a saddle fixed point with a quadratic homoclinic tangency and a saddle-node fixed point with a transversal homoclinic orbit is discussed.
We prove that a "positive probability" subset of the boundary of the set of hyperbolic (Axiom A) surface diffeomorphisms with no cycles $\mathcal{H}$ is constituted by Kupka-Smale diffeomorphisms: all periodic points are hyperbolic and their invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Lack of hyperbolicity arises from the presence of a tangency between a stable manifold and an unstable manifold, one of which is not associated to a periodic point. All these diffeomorphisms that we construct lie on the boundary of the same connected component of $\mathcal{H}$.
We prove that any diffeomorphism of a compact manifold can be C^1-approximated by a diffeomorphism which exhibits a homoclinic bifurcation (a homoclinic tangency or a heterodimensional cycle) or by a diffeomorphism which is partially hyperbolic (its chain-recurrent set splits into partially hyperbolic pieces whose centre bundles have dimensions less or equal to two). We also study in a more systematic way the central models introduced in arXiv:math/0605387.
Parabolic bifurcations in one complex dimension demonstrate a wide variety of interesting dynamical phenomena. In this paper we consider parabolic bifurcations of families of diffeomorphisms in two complex dimensions. Specifically we consider a two variable family of diffeomorphisms $F_ε: M\to M$ given locally by $$F_ε(x,y) = (x + x^2 + ε^2+ ..., b_εy+...)$$ where $|b_ε|<1$, and the `$...$' terms involve $x$, $y$ and $ε$.
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
Motivated by non-equilibrium phenomena in nature, we study dynamical systems whose time-evolution is determined by non-stationary compositions of chaotic maps. The constituent maps are topologically transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms on a 2-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold, which are allowed to change with time - slowly, but in a rather arbitrary fashion. In particular, such systems admit no invariant measure. By constructing a coupling, we prove that any two sufficiently regular distributions of the initial state converge exponentially with time. Thus, a system of the kind loses memory …
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
We discuss an approach to the computer assisted proof of the existence of branches of stationary and periodic solutions for dissipative PDEs, using the Brussellator system with diffusion and Dirichlet boundary conditions as an example, We also consider the case where the branch of periodic solutions emanates from a branch of stationary solutions through a Hopf bifurcation.
We are interested in finding a dense part of the space of $C^1$-diffeomorphisms which decomposes into open subsets corresponding to different dynamical behaviors: we discuss results and questions in this direction. In particular we present recent results towards a conjecture by J. Palis: any system can be approximated either by one which is hyperbolic (and whose dynamics is well understood) or by one which exhibits a homoclinic bifurcation (a simple local configuration involving one or two periodic orbits).
Nonlinear dynamical systems are sometimes under the influence of random fluctuations. It is desirable to examine possible bifurcations for stochastic dynamical systems when a parameter varies. A computational analysis is conducted to investigate bifurcations of a simple dynamical system under non-Gaussian α-stable Levy motions, by examining the changes in stationary probability density functions for the solution orbits of this stochastic system. The stationary probability density functions are obtained by numerically solving a non local Fokker-Planck equation. This allows numerically investiga…
We show that the stable and unstable sets of non-uniformly hyperbolic horseshoes arising in some heteroclinic bifurcations of surface diffeomorphisms have the value conjectured in a previous work by the second and third authors of the present paper. Our results apply to first heteroclinic bifurcations associated to horseshoes with Hausdorff dimension $<22/21$ of conservative surface diffeomorphisms.
We study the dynamics of a degenerate parabolic equation with a variable, generally non-smooth diffusion coefficient, which may vanish at some points or be unbounded. We show the existence of a global branch of nonnegative stationary states, covering both the cases of a bounded and an unbounded domain. The global bifurcation of stationary states, implies-in conjuction with the definition of a gradient dynamical system in the natural phase space-that at least in the case of a bounded domain, any solution with nonnegative initial data tends to the trivial or the nonnegative equilibrium. Applicat…
The purpose of this paper is to advance the knowledge of the dynamics arising from the creation and subsequent bifurcation of Poincaré heteroclinic cycles. The problem is central to dynamics: it has to be addressed if, for instance, one aims at describing the typical orbit behaviour of a typical system, thus providing a global scenario for the ensemble of dynamical systems - see the Introduction and [P1, P2]. Here, we shall consider smooth, i.e. $C^\infty$, one-parameter families of dissipative, meaning non-conservative, surface diffeomorphisms. An hetereoclinic cycle may appear when the param…
Autonomous sustained oscillations are ubiquitous in living and nonliving systems. As open systems, far from thermodynamic equilibrium, they defy entropic laws which mandate convergence to stationarity. We present structural conditions on network cycles which support global Hopf bifurcation, i.e. global bifurcation of non-stationary time-periodic solutions from stationary solutions. Specifically, we show how monotone feedback cycles of the linearization at stationary solutions give rise to global Hopf bifurcation, for sufficiently dominant coefficients along the cycle. We include four example n…
We study several families of planar quadratic diffeomorphisms near a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. For each family, the associate bifurcation diagram can be deduced from the interpolating flow. However, a zone of chaos confined between two lines of homoclinic bifurcation that are exponentially close to one-another is observed. The goal of this paper is to test numerically an accurate asymptotic expansion for the width of this chaotic zone for different families.
We provide an example for stabilization by noise. Our approach does not rely on monotonicity arguments due to the presence of higher order differential operators or mixing properties of the system as the noise might be highly degenerate. In the examples a scalar additive noise destroys a high-dimensional random attractor of a PDE on an unbounded domain. In the presence of small noise close to bifurcation all trajectories converge to a single stationary solution.
We consider the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible viscous fluid on a square, satisfying Navier boundary conditions and being subjected to a time-independent force. As the kinematic viscosity is varied, a branch of stationary solutions is shown to undergo a Hopf bifurcation, where a periodic cycle branches from the stationary solution. Our proof is constructive and uses computer-assisted estimates.
We consider a bistable integral equation which governs the stationary solutions of a convolution model of solid--solid phase transitions on a circle. We study the bifurcations of the set of the stationary solutions as the diffusion coefficient is varied to examine the transition from an infinite number of steady states to three for the continuum limit of the semi--discretised system. We show how the symmetry of the problem is responsible for the generation and stabilisation of equilibria and comment on the puzzling connection between continuity and stability that exists in this problem.
In this paper, we study a two-parameter family of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms such that it has a cubic homoclinic tangency unfolding generically which is associated with a dissipative saddle point. Our first theorem presents an open set in the parameter-plane such that, for any parameter value in the open set, there exists a one-parameter subfamily through this value exhibiting cubically related persistent contact-making and contact-breaking quadratic tangencies. Moreover, the second theorem shows that any such two-parameter family satisfies Wang-Young's conditions which guarantee that it …
For many physical systems the transition from a stationary solution to sustained small amplitude oscillations corresponds to a Hopf bifurcation. For systems involving impacts, thresholds, switches, or other abrupt events, however, this transition can be achieved in fundamentally different ways. This paper reviews 20 such `Hopf-like' bifurcations for two-dimensional ODE systems with state-dependent switching rules. The bifurcations include boundary equilibrium bifurcations, the collision or change of stability of equilibria or folds on switching manifolds, and limit cycle creation via hysteresi…
We study a non-linear dynamical system on networks inspired by the pitchfork bifurcation normal form. The system has several interesting interpretations: as an interconnection of several pitchfork systems, a gradient dynamical system and the dominating behaviour of a general class of non-linear dynamical systems. The equilibrium behaviour of the system exhibits a global bifurcation with respect to the system parameter, with a transition from a single constant stationary state to a large range of possible stationary states. Our main result classifies the stability of (a subset of) these station…
Recently, a novel bifurcation technique known as the deflated continuation method (DCM) was applied to the single-component nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a parabolic trap in two spatial dimensions. The bifurcation analysis carried out by a subset of the present authors shed light on the configuration space of solutions of this fundamental problem in the physics of ultracold atoms. In the present work, we take this a step further by applying the DCM to two coupled NLS equations in order to elucidate the considerably more complex landscape of solutions of this system. Upon identifyin…
We prove that the statistical properties of random perturbations of a nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphism are described by a finite number of stationary measures. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of such dynamical systems. We show that a certain $C^2$-open class of nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [Alves, J; Bonatti, C. and Viana, V., SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems with mostly expanding central direction, Invent. Math., 140 (2000), 351-398] are stochastically stable. Our setting encompasses that of partially hy…
Standard bifurcation theory is concerned with families of vector fields $dx/dt = f(x,λ)$, $x \in \R^n$, involving one or several constant real parameters $λ$. Viewed as a differential equation for the pair $(x,λ)$, we observe a foliation of the total phase space by constant $λ$. Frequently, the presence of a trivial stationary solution $x=0$ is also imposed: $0 = f(0,λ)$. Bifurcation without parameters, in contrast, discards the foliation by a constant parameter $λ$. Instead, we consider systems $dx/dt = f(x,y), dy/dt = g(x,y)$. Standard bifurcation theory then corresponds to the special case …
In this paper, we provide a technique result on the existence of Gibbs cu-states for diffeomorphisms with dominated splittings. More precisely, for given $C^2$ diffeomorphim $f$ with dominated splitting $T_ΛM = E\oplus F$ on an attractor $Λ$, by considering some suitable random perturbation of $f$, we show that for any zero noise limit of ergodic stationary measures, if it has positive integrable Lyapunov exponents along invariant sub-bundle $E$, then its ergodic components contain Gibbs cu-states associated to $E$. With this technique, we show the existence of SRB measures and physical measur…
The Fedoriuk-Maslov catastrophe theory of caustics and turning points is extended to solve the bifurcation problems by the improved stationary phase method (ISPM). The trace formulas for the radial power-law (RPL) potentials are presented by the ISPM based on the second- and third-order expansion of the classical action near the stationary point. A considerable enhancement of contributions of the two orbits (pair of consisting of the parent and newborn orbits) at their bifurcation is shown. The ISPM trace formula is proposed for a simple bifurcation scenario of Hamiltonian systems with continu…
We consider C^{2} Henon-like families of diffeomorphisms of R^{2} and study the boundary of the region of parameter values for which the nonwandering set is uniformly hyperbolic. Assuming sufficient dissipativity, we show that the loss of hyperbolicity is caused by a first homoclinic or heteroclinic tangency and that uniform hyperbolicity estimates hold uniformly in the parameter up to this bifurcation parameter and even, to some extent, at the bifurcation parameter.
We consider random perturbations of a topologically transitive local diffeomorphism of a Riemannian manifold. We show that if an absolutely continuous ergodic stationary measures is expanding (all Lyapunov exponents positive), then there is a random Gibbs-Markov-Young structure which can be used to lift that measure. We also prove that if the original map admits a finite number of expanding invariant measures then the stationary measures of a sufficiently small stochastic perturbation are expanding.
We investigate a diffusive predator-prey model by incorporating the fear effect into prey population, since the fear of predators could visibly reduce the reproduction of prey. By introducing the mature delay as bifurcation parameter, we find this makes the predator-prey system more complicated and usually induces Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations. The formulas determining the properties of Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations by computing the normal form on the center manifold are given. Near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point we give the detailed bifurcation set by investigating the universal unfoldin…
We study bifurcations of invariant graphs in skew product dynamical systems driven by hyperbolic surface maps T like Anosov surface diffeomorphisms or baker maps and with one-dimensional concave fibre maps under multiplicative forcing when the forcing is scaled by a parameter r=e^{-t}. For a range of parameters two invariant graphs (a trivial and a non-trivial one) coexist, and we use thermodynamic formalism to characterize the parameter dependence of the Hausdorff and packing dimension of the set of points where both graphs coincide. As a corollary we characterize the parameter dependence of …
We investigate a wide class of two-dimensional hyperbolic systems with singularities, and prove the almost sure invariance principle (ASIP) for the random process generated by sequences of dynamically Hölder observables. The observables could be unbounded, and the process may be non-stationary and need not have linearly growing variances. Our results apply to Anosov diffeomorphisms, Sinai dispersing billiards and their perturbations. The random processes under consideration are related to the fluctuation of Lyapunov exponents, the shrinking target problem, etc.
Bifurcation analysis has many applications in different scientific fields, such as electronics, biology, ecology, and economics. In population biology, deterministic methods of bifurcation are commonly used. In contrast, stochastic bifurcation techniques are infrequently employed. Here we establish stochastic P-bifurcation behavior of (i) a growth model with state-dependent birth rate and constant death rate, and (ii) a logistic growth model with state-dependent carrying capacity, both of which are driven by multiplicative symmetric stable Levy noise. Transcritical bifurcation occurs in the de…
This paper concerns the effects of additive non-Gaussian Lévy noises on the pitchfork bifurcation. We consider two types of noises, $α$-stable process and the truncated process. Under both $α$-stable process and the truncated process, the classical pitchfork bifurcation model exists a unique invariant measure. The Lyapunov exponent associated with the invariant measure is always negative for the system under the truncated case. While the stochastic pitchfork bifurcation still occurs. In both cases, the attractivity uniformity, the finite-time Lyapunov exponent, and the dichotomy spectrum behav…
In this paper we analyse a dynamical system based on the so-called KCG (Källén, Crafoord, Ghil) conceptual climate model. This model describes an evolution of the globally averaged temperature and the average extent of the ice sheets. In the nondimensional form the model is prone to several simplifications facilitating the subsequent analysis. We consider the limiting case of the stationary snow line for which the phase plane can be completely analysed and the type of each stationary point can be determined. One of them can exhibit the Hopf bifurcation for which occurrence we find the sufficie…
We study bifurcations of homoclinic orbits to hyperbolic saddle equilibria in a class of four-dimensional systems which may be Hamiltonian or not. Only one parameter is enough to treat these types of bifurcations in Hamiltonian systems but two parameters are needed in general systems. We apply a version of Melnikov's method due to Gruendler to obtain saddle-node and pitchfork types of bifurcation results for homoclinic orbits. Furthermore we prove that if these bifurcations occur, then the variational equations around the homoclinic orbits are integrable in the meaning of differential Galois t…
