This paper contains sharp estimates about the distribution of multiple random integrals of functions of several variables with respect to a normalized empirical measure, about the distribution of U-statistics and multiple Wiener-Ito integrals with respect to a white noise. It also contains good estimates about the supremum of appropriate classes of such integrals or U-statistics. The proof of most results is omitted, I have concentrated on the explanation of their content and the picture behind them. I also tried to explain the reason for the investigation of such questions. My goal was to yield such a presentation of the results which a non-expert also can understand, and not only on a formal level.
For a fixed positive integer $\;k,\;$ limit laws of linearly normalized $\;k$-th upper order statistics are well known. In this article, a comprehensive study of tail behaviours of limit laws of normalized $k$-th upper order statistics under fixed and random sample sizes is carried out using tail equivalence which leads to some interesting tail behaviours of the limit laws. These lead to definitive answers about their max domains of attraction. Stochastic ordering properties of the limit laws are also studied. The results obtained are not dependent on linear norming and apply to power norming …
We consider a Markov chain on $R^+$ with asymptotically zero drift and finite second moments of jumps which is positive recurrent. A power-like asymptotic behaviour of the invariant tail distribution is proven; such a heavy-tailed invariant measure happens even if the jumps of the chain are bounded. Our analysis is based on test functions technique and on construction of a harmonic function.
Sticky Brownian motions, as time-changed semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions, have various applications in many fields, including queuing theory and mathematical finance. In this paper, we are concerned about the stationary distributions of a multidimensional sticky Brownian motion, provided it is stable. We will study the large deviations principle for stationary distribution and the tail behaviour of the joint stationary distribution.
We take an $L_1$-dense class of functions $\Cal F$ on a measurable space $(X,\Cal X)$ and a sequence of i.i.d. $X$-valued random variables $ξ_1,\dots,ξ_n$, and give a good estimate on the tail behaviour of $\sup\limits_{f\in\Cal F}\sum\limits_{j=1}^nf(ξ_j)$ if the conditions $\sup\limits_{x\in X}|f(x)|\le1$, $Ef(ξ_1)=0$ and $Ef(ξ_1)^2<σ^2$ with some $0\leσ\le1$ hold for all $f\in\Cal F$. Roughly speaking this estimate states that under some natural conditions the above considered supremum is not much larger than the worst element taking part in it. The proof heavily depends on the main result …
Consider a heavy-tailed branching process (denoted by $Z_{n}$) in random environments, under the condition which infers that $\mathbb{E}\log m(ξ_{0})=\infty$. We show that (1) there exists no proper $c_{n}$ such that $\{Z_{n}/c_{n}\}$ has a proper, non-degenerate limit, (2) normalized by a sequence of functions, a proper limit can be obtained, i.e., $y_{n}\left(\barξ,Z_{n}(\barξ)\right)$ converges almost surely to a random variable $Y(\barξ)$, where $Y\in(0,1)~η$-a.s., (3) finally, we give a necessary and sufficient conditions for the almost sure convergence of $\left\{\frac{U(\barξ,Z_{n}(\bar…
As well known, for a supercritical Galton-Watson process $Z_n$ whose offspring distribution has mean $m>1$, the ratio $W_n:=Z_n/m^n$ has a.s. limit, say $W$. We study tail behaviour of the distributions of $W_n$ and $W$ in the case where $Z_1$ has heavy-tailed distribution, that is, $\E e^{λZ_1}=\infty$ for every $λ>0$. We show how different types of distributions of $Z_1$ lead to different asymptotic behaviour of the tail of $W_n$ and $W$. We describe the most likely way how large values of the process occur.
The areas under workload process and under queuing process in a single server queue over the busy period have many applications not only in queuing theory but also in risk theory or percolation theory. We focus here on the tail behaviour of distribution of these two integrals. We present various open problems and conjectures, which are supported by partial results for some special cases.
A random flight on a plane with non-isotropic displacements at the moments of direction changes is considered. In the case of exponentially distributed flight lengths a Gaussian limit theorem is proved for the position of a particle in the scheme of series when jump lengths and non-isotropic displacements tend to zero. If the flight lengths have a folded Cauchy distribution the limiting distribution of the particle position is a convolution of the circular bivariate Cauchy distribution with a Gaussian law.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of a class of small-noise diffusions driven by fractional Brownian motion, with random starting points. Different scalings allow for different asymptotic properties of the process (small-time and tail behaviours in particular). In order to do so, we extend some results on sample path large deviations for such diffusions. As an application, we show how these results characterise the small-time and tail estimates of the implied volatility for rough volatility models, recently proposed in mathematical finance.
A second-order Galton-Watson process with immigration can be represented as a coordinate process of a 2-type Galton-Watson process with immigration. Sufficient conditions are derived on the offspring and immigration distributions of a second-order Galton-Watson process with immigration under which the corresponding 2-type Galton-Watson process with immigration has a unique stationary distribution such that its common marginals are regularly varying. In the course of the proof sufficient conditions are given under which the distribution of a second-order Galton-Watson process (without immigrati…
Let $X_{1},\ldots ,X_{n}$ be $n$ real-valued dependent random variables. With motivation from Mitra and Resnick (2009), we derive the tail asymptotic expansion for the weighted sum of order statistics $X_{1:n}\leq \cdots \leq X_{n:n}$ of $X_{1},\ldots ,X_{n}$ under the general case in which the distribution function of $X_{n:n}$ is long-tailed or rapidly varying and $% X_{1},\ldots ,X_{n}$ may not be comparable in terms of their tail probability. We also present two examples and an application of our results in risk theory.
In many areas of interest, modern risk assessment requires estimation of the extremal behaviour of sums of random variables. We derive the first order upper-tail behaviour of the weighted sum of bivariate random variables under weak assumptions on their marginal distributions and their copula. The extremal behaviour of the marginal variables is characterised by the generalised Pareto distribution and their extremal dependence through subclasses of the limiting representations of Ledford and Tawn (1997) and Heffernan and Tawn (2004). We find that the upper tail behaviour of the aggregate is dri…
This note studies the asymptotic properties of the variable $$Z_d:=\frac{X_1}{d}|\{X_1+X_2=d\},$$ as $d\to \infty$. Here $X_1$ and $X_2$ are non-negative i.i.d. variables with a common twice differentiable density function $f$. General results concerning the distributional limits of $Z_d$ are discussed with various examples. Eventual log-convexity or log-concavity of $f$ turns out to be the key ingredient that determines how the variable $Z_d$ behaves. As a consequence, two surprising discoveries are presented: Firstly, it is noted that the distributional limit is not strictly determined by th…
We study tail behaviour of the distribution of the area under the positive excursion of a random walk which has negative drift and heavy-tailed increments. We determine the asymptotics for tail probabilities for the area.
We consider a dynamical system in R driven by a vector field -U', where U is a multi-well potential satisfying some regularity conditions. We perturb this dynamical system by a Levy noise of small intensity and such that the heaviest tail of its Levy measure is regularly varying. We show that the perturbed dynamical system exhibits metastable behaviour i.e. on a proper time scale it reminds of a Markov jump process taking values in the local minima of the potential U. Due to the heavy-tail nature of the random perturbation, the results differ strongly from the well studied purely Gaussian case…
This note continues paper of Denisov and Wachtel (2010), where we have constructed a $k$-dimensional random walk conditioned to stay in the Weyl chamber of type $A$. The construction was done under the assumption that the original random walk has $k-1$ moments. In this note we continue the study of killed random walks in the Weyl chamber, and assume that the tail of increments is regularly varying of index $α<k-1$. It appears that the asymptotic behaviour of random walks is different in this case. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of the exit time, and, using thisinformation, construct a c…
We consider a Wigner matrix $A$ with entries tail decaying as $x^{-α}$ with $2<α<4$ for large $x$ and study fluctuations of linear statistics $N^{-1}\operatorname{Tr}φ(A)$. The behavior of such fluctuations has been understood for both heavy-tailed matrices (i.e. $α< 2$) and light-tailed matrices (i.e. $α> 4$). This paper fills in the gap of understanding for $2<α<4$. We find that while linear spectral statistics for heavy-tailed matrices have fluctuations of order $N^{-1/2}$ and those for light-tailed matrices have fluctuations of order $N^{-1}$, the linear spectral statistics for half-heavy-…
We consider a random walk $\tilde S$ which has different increment distributions in positive and negative half-planes. In the upper half-plane the increments are mean-zero i.i.d. with finite variance. In the lower half-plane we consider two cases: increments are positive i.i.d. random variables with either a slowly varying tail or with a finite expectation. For the distributions with a slowly varying tails, we show that $\{\frac{1}{\sqrt n} \tilde S(nt)\}$ has no weak limit in $\De$; alternatively, the weak limit is a reflected Brownian motion.
Several terms in an asynptotic estimate for the renewal mass function ina discrete random walk which has positive mean and regularly varying right-hand tail are given. Similar results are given for the renewal density function in the absolutely continuous case.
The Hoeffding-type-inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical (degenerate) U- and V-statistics of an arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of observations satisfying $ρ$-mixing.
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
Correcting for skewness can result in more accurate tail probability approximations in the central limit theorem for sums of independent random variables. In this paper, we extend the theory to sums of local statistics of independent random variables and apply the result to $k$-runs, U-statistics, and subgraph counts in the Erdös-Rényi random graph. To prove our main result, we develop exponential concentration inequalities and higher-order Cramér-type moderate deviations via Stein's method.
Hoeffding-type exponential inequalities are obtained for the distribution tails of canonical von Mises' statistics of arbitrary order based on samples from a stationary sequence of random variables satisfying the φ-mixing condition. The present paper weakens the restrictions on the coefficient φ() which are contained in the paper "Exponential inequalities for the distributions of canonical U- and V-statistics of dependent observations" by Borisov and Volodko (2009). At the same time, we correct the corresponding proof in this paper.
We consider a branching random walk on $\mathbb{R}$ with a killing barrier at zero. At criticality, the process becomes eventually extinct, and the total progeny $Z$ is therefore finite. We show that the tail distribution of $Z$ displays a typical behaviour in $(n\ln^2(n))^{-1}$, which confirms the prediction of Addario-Berry and Broutin.
We consider a distribution equation which was initially studied by Bertoin \cite{Bertoin}: \[M \stackrel{d}{=} \max\{\widetildeν, \max_{1\leq k\leq ν}M_k\}.\] where $\{M_k\}_{k\geq 1}$ are i.i.d. copies of $M$ and independent of $(\widetildeν, ν)\in\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{N}$. We obtain the tail behaviour of the solution of a generalised equation in a different but direct method by considering the joint tail of $(\widetildeν, ν)$.
In this paper, the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution tail of the stationary waiting time $W$ in the $GI/GI/2$ FCFS queue is studied. Under subexponential-type assumptions on the service time distribution, bounds and sharp asymptotics are given for the probability ${\bf P}\{W>x\}$. We also get asymptotics for the distribution tail of a stationary two-dimensional workload vector and of a stationary queue length. These asymptotics depend heavily on the traffic load.
We provide exact large-time equivalents of the density and upper tail distributions of the exponential functional of a subordinator in terms of its Laplace exponents. This improves previous results on the logarithmic asymptotic behaviour of the upper tail. Since the results in their general form remain rather abstract, we study some fairly common situations in details to see how the behavior near 0 of the Lévy measure of the subordinator influences the asymptotics of the density and upper tail distributions. Several examples of applications are then discussed.
In this paper, we analyze a multivariate counterpart of the generalized weighted Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, which is the supremum of weighted locally stationary chi-square process over non-compact interval. The boundedness and the exact tail asymptotic behavior of the statistics are derived. We illustrate our findings by two examples where the statistic is defined by Brownian bridge and fractional Brownian motion respectively.
We deduce the non-asymptotical (bilateral) estimates for moment inequalities for multiple sums of non-negative (more precisely, non-negative) independent random variables, on the other words, the well known U or V-statistics. Our consideration based on the correspondent estimates for the one-dimensional case by means of the so-called degenerate approximation. We apply also the theory of Bell functions as well as the properties of the Poisson distribution and the theory of the so-called Grand Lebesgue Spaces (GLS).
For a class of one-dimensional autoregressive processes $(X_n)$ we consider the tail behaviour of the stopping time $T_0=\min \lbrace n\geq 1: X_n\leq 0 \rbrace$. We discuss existing general analytical approaches to this and related problems and propose a new one, which is based on a renewal-type decomposition for the moment generating function of $T_0$ and on the analytical Fredholm alternative. Using this method, we show that $\mathbb{P}_x(T_0=n)\sim V(x)R_0^n$ for some $0<R_0<1$ and a positive $R^{-1}_0$-harmonic function $V$. Further we prove that our conditions on the tail behaviour of th…
We show central limit theorems (CLT) for the Stieltjes transforms or more general analytic functions of symmetric matrices with independent heavy tailed entries, including entries in the domain of attraction of $α$-stable laws and entries with moments exploding with the dimension, as in the adjacency matrices of Erdös-Rényi graphs. For the second model, we also prove a central limit theorem of the moments of its empirical eigenvalues distribution. The limit laws are Gaussian, but unlike to the case of standard Wigner matrices, the normalization is the one of the classical CLT for independent r…
We consider the stochastic behavior of a class of local $U$-statistics of Poisson processes$-$which include subgraph and simplex counts as special cases, and amounts to quantifying clustering behavior$-$for point clouds lying in diverging halfspaces. We provide limit theorems for distributions with light and heavy tails. In particular, we prove finite-dimensional central limit theorems. In the light tail case we investigate tails that decay at least as slow as exponential and at least as fast as Gaussian. These results also furnish as a corollary that $U$-statistics for halfspaces diverging at…
In this paper we derive the asymptotic behaviour of the survival function of both random sum and random maximum of log-normal risks. As for the case of finite sum and maximum investigated in Asmussen and Rojas-Nandaypa (2008) also for the more general setup of random sums and random maximum the principle of a single big jump holds. We investigate both the log-normal sequences and some related dependence structures motivated by stationary Gaussian sequences.
In this article a special case of an M/G/2-queue is considered, where the two servers are exposed to two types of jobs that are distributed among the servers via a random switch. In this model the asymptotic behaviour of the workload buffer exceedance probabilities for the two single servers/ both servers together/ one (unspecified) server is determined. Hereby one has to distinguish between jobs that are either heavy-tailed or light-tailed. The results are derived via the dual risk model of the studied M/G/2-queue for which the asymptotic behaviour of different ruin probabilities is determine…
The authors announce a general tail estimate, called a decoupling inequality, for a symmetrized sum of non-linear $k$-correlations of $n>k$ independent random variables.
We answer a question of Ahlberg and Steif (2014) by finding the tail behaviour of the crossing probability in near-critical planar percolation. Interestingly, this superexponentially small behaviour is different from the case of dynamical percolation, where the analogous tail probability was proved to be at least exponential and at most superpolynomial by Hammond, Mossel and Pete (2012). The proof is simple, given the scale covariance established by Garban, Pete and Schramm (2013).
We study heavy-tailed Hermitian random matrices that are unitarily invariant. The invariance implies that the eigenvalue and eigenvector statistics are decoupled. The motivating question has been whether a freely stable random matrix has stable eigenvalue statistics for the largest eigenvalues in the tail. We investigate this question through the use of both numerical and analytical means, the latter of which makes use of the supersymmetry method. A surprising behaviour is uncovered in that a freely stable random matrix does not necessarily yield stable statistics and if it does then it might …
In this paper, we derive higher-order expansions of $L$-statistics of independent risks $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ under conditions on the underlying distribution function $F$. The new results are applied to derive the asymptotic expansions of ratios of two kinds of risk measures, stop-loss premium and excess return on capital, respectively.
We consider the scaling limit of linear statistics for eigenphases of a matrix taken from one of the classical compact groups. We compute their moments and find that the first few moments are Gaussian, whereas the limiting distribution is not. The precise number of Gaussian moments depends upon the particular statistic considered.
In this work, we propose a class of importance sampling (IS) estimators for estimating the right tail probability of a sum of continuous random variables based on a change of variables to $L^1$ polar coordinates in which the radial and angular components of the IS distribution are considered separately. When the asymptotic behaviour of the sum is known we exploit it for the radial change of measure, and the resulting estimator has the appealing form of the (known) asymptotic multiplied by a random multiplicative correction factor. Given we assume knowledge of the asymptotic behaviour of the su…
We study deviation of U-statistics when samples have heavy-tailed distribution so the kernel of the U-statistic does not have bounded exponential moments at any positive point. We obtain an exponential upper bound for the tail of the U-statistics which clearly denotes two regions of tail decay, the first is a Gaussian decay and the second behaves like the tail of the kernel. For several common U-statistics, we also show the upper bound has the right rate of decay as well as sharp constants by obtaining rough logarithmic limits which in turn can be used to develop LDP for U-statistics. In spite…
We study large Wigner random matrices in the case when the marginal distributions of matrix entries have heavy tails. We prove that the largest eigenvalues of such matrices have Poisson statistics.

We establish exponential inequalities and Cramer-type moderate deviation theorems for a class of V-statistics under strong mixing conditions. Our theory is developed via kernel expansion based on random Fourier features. This type of expansion is new and useful for handling many notorious classes of kernels. While the developed theory has a number of applications, we apply it to lasso-type semiparametric regression estimation and high-dimensional multiple hypothesis testing.
We investigate the tail behaviour of the steady state distribution of a stochastic recursion that generalises Lindley's recursion. This recursion arises in queuing systems with dependent interarrival and service times, and includes alternating service systems and carousel storage systems as special cases. We obtain precise tail asymptotics in three qualitatively different cases, and compare these with existing results for Lindley's recursion and for alternating service systems.
If the Euclidean norm is strongly concentrated with respect to a measure, the average distribution of an average marginal of this measure has Gaussian asymptotics that captures tail behaviour. If the marginals of the measure have exponential moments, Gaussian asymptotics for the distribution of the average marginal implies Gaussian asymptotics for the distribution of most individual marginals. We show applications to measures of geometric origin.
Let (RU_1, R U_2) be a given bivariate scale mixture random vector, with R>0 being independent of the bivariate random vector (U_1,U_2). In this paper we derive exact asymptotic expansions of the tail probability P{RU_1> x, RU_2> ax}, a \in (0,1] as x tends infintiy assuming that R has distribution function in the Gumbel max-domain of attraction and (U_1,U_2) has a specific tail behaviour around some absorbing point. As a special case of our results we retrieve the exact asymptotic behaviour of bivariate polar random vectors. We apply our results to investigate the asymptotic independence and …
Over the last two decades, it has been argued that the Lorentz transformation mechanism, which imposes the generalization of Newton's classical mechanics into Einstein's special relativity, implies a generalization, or deformation, of the ordinary statistical mechanics. The exponential function, which defines the Boltzmann's factor, emerges properly deformed within this formalism. Starting from this, so-called $κ$-deformed exponential function, we introduce new classes of statistical distributions emerging as the $κ$-deformed version of already known distribution as the Generalized Gamma, Weib…
We consider random Schrödinger operators of the form $Δ+ξ$, where $Δ$ is the lattice Laplacian on $\mathbb Z^d$ and $ξ$ is an i.i.d. random field, and study the extreme order statistics of the eigenvalues for this operator restricted to large but finite subsets of $\mathbb Z^d$. We show that for $ξ$ with a doubly-exponential type of upper tail, the upper extreme order statistics of the eigenvalues falls into the Gumbel max-order class. The corresponding eigenfunctions are exponentially localized in regions where $ξ$ takes large, and properly arranged, values. A new and self-contained argument …
We discuss the long time behaviour of the parabolic Anderson model, the Cauchy problem for the heat equation with random potential on $\Z^d$. We consider general i.i.d. potentials and show that exactly \emph{four} qualitatively different types of intermittent behaviour can occur. These four universality classes depend on the upper tail of the potential distribution: (1) tails at $\infty$ that are thicker than the double-exponential tails, (2) double-exponential tails at $\infty$ studied by Gärtner and Molchanov, (3) a new class called \emph{almost bounded potentials}, and (4) potentials bounde…
