Let W -> A^2 be the universal Weierstrass family of cubic curves over C. For each N >= 2, we construct surfaces parametrizing the three standard kinds of level N structures on the smooth fibers of W. We then complete these surfaces to finite covers of A^2. Since W -> A^2 is the versal deformation space of a cusp singularity, these surfaces convey information about the level structure on any family of curves of genus g degenerating to a cuspidal curve. Our goal in this note is to determine for which values of N these surfaces are smooth over (0,0). From a topological perspective, the results determine the homeomorphism type of certain branched covers of S^3 with monodromy in SL_2(Z/N).
This work deals with an algebro-geometric theory of solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation based on torsion free coherent sheaves of Lie algebras on Weierstrass cubic curves.
In this paper we study the combinatorics of quasi-trigonometric solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation, arising from simple vector bundles on a nodal Weierstrass cubic.
We completely describe all semi-stable torsion free sheaves of degree zero on nodal cubic curves using the technique of Fourier-Mukai transforms. The Fourier-Mukai images of such sheaves are torsion sheaves of finite length, which we compute explicitly. We show how to obtain an SL(2,Z)-action (up to shifts) on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on any Weierstass cubic.
Costantini and Kappes gave an algebraic equation of the universal family over the Kenyon-Smillie (2,3,4)-Teichmüller curve. This equation gives rise to a family of projective plane quartic curves with three singular members. These singular curves are: (1) an integral nodal quartic, (2) the union of a line and a nodal cubic, and (3) a quadruple line. We determine the limit Weierstrass points on these singular curves.
In this paper, we determine the Weierstrass semigroup $H(P_{\infty})$ and the full automorphism group of a certain family of curves $\mathcal{X}_{n,r}$, which was recently introduced by Borges and Conceição.
Let C be a projective Gorenstein curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A generalized linear system on C is a pair (I,f) consisting of a torsion-free, rank-1 sheaf I on C and a map of vector spaces f to the space of global sections of I. If the system is nondegenerate on every irreducible component of C, we associate to it a 0-cycle W, its Weierstrass cycle. Then we show that for each one-parameter family of curves C(t) degenerating to C, and each family of linear systems (L(t),f(t)) along C(t), with L(t) invertible, degenerating to (I,f), the corresponding Weierstrass d…
Weierstrass semigroups are well-known along the literature. We present a new family of non-Weierstrass semigroups which can be written as an intersection of Weierstrass semigroups. In addition, we provide methods for calculating non-Weierstrass semigroups with genus as large as desired.
For each group $G$, $(|G| > 2)$ \, which acts as a full automorphism group on a genus 3 hyperelliptic curve, we determine the family of curves which have 2-Weierstrass points. Such families of curves are explicitly determined in terms of the absolute invariants of binary octavics. The 1-dimensional families that we discover have the property that they contain only genus 0 components.
The framework of universal geometry allows us to consider metrical properties of affine views of elliptic curves, even over finite fields. We show how the Neuberg cubic of triangle geometry extends to the finite field situation and provides interesting potential invariants for elliptic curves, focussing on an explicit example over $\mathbb{F}_{23}$. We also prove that tangent conics for a Weierstrass cubic are identical or disjoint.
In this article, we develop a geometric method to construct solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation, attaching to the Weierstrass family of plane cubic curves and a pair of coprime positive integers, a family of classical r-matrices. It turns out that all elliptic r-matrices arise in this way from smooth cubic curves. For the cuspidal cubic curve, we prove that the obtained solutions are rational and compute them explicitly. We also describe them in terms of Stolin's classification and prove that they are degenerations of the corresponding elliptic solutions.
This paper, motivated by problems in Diophantine analysis which can be formulated as problems of finding rational points on the intersection of two quadrics, presents an explicit construction of a rationally defined isomorphism (biregular mapping) between a rationally defined smooth intersection of two quadrics in projective three-space and an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form which maps a distinguished rational point to the point at infinity. The usual approach of transforming a smooth plane cubic to a curve in Weierstrass form by mapping an inflection point to the point at infinity in a par…
We study the connection between the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion and quantum curves for the family of genus one spectral curves given by the Weierstrass equation. We construct quantizations of the spectral curve that annihilate the perturbative and non-perturbative wave-functions. In particular, for the non-perturbative wave-function, we prove, up to order hbar^5, that the quantum curve satisfies the properties expected from matrix models. As a side result, we obtain an infinite sequence of identities relating A-cycle integrals of elliptic functions and quasi-modular forms.
Consider the family of smooth cubic surfaces which can be realized as threefold-branched covers of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$, with branch locus equal to a smooth cubic curve. This family is parametrized by the space $\mathcal{U}_{3}$ of smooth cubic curves in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ and each surface is equipped with a $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$ deck group action. We compute the image of the monodromy map $ρ$ induced by the action of $π_{1}\left(\mathcal{U}_{3}\right)$ on the $27$ lines contained on the cubic surfaces of this family. Due to a classical result, this image is contained in the Weyl group $W\left(E_…
In the 80's D. Eisenbud and J. Harris developed the general theory of limit linear series, Invent. math. 85 (1986), in order to understand what happens to linear systems and their ramification points on families of non-singular curves degenerating to curves of compact type. They applied their theory to the study of limits of Weierstrass points, among other endeavours. In one of their articles, Invent. math. 87 (1987), they asked: "What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves not of compact type?" In this eprint we address this question within a …
Let C be the union of two general connected, smooth, nonrational curves X and Y intersecting transversally at a point P. Assume that P is a general point of X or of Y. Our main result, in a simplified way, says: Let Q be a point of X. Then Q is the limit of special Weierstrass points on a family of smooth curves degenerating to C if and only if Q is not P and either of the following conditions hold: Q is a special ramification point of the linear system |K_X+(g_Y+1)P|, or Q is a ramification point of the linear system |K_X+(g_Y+1+j)P| for j=-1 or j=1 and P is a Weierstrass point of Y. Above, g…
We prove that cubic fourfolds in a certain 10-dimensional family have finite-dimensional motive. The proof is based on the van Geemen-Izadi construction of an algebraic Kuga-Satake correspondence for these cubic fourfolds, combined with Voisin's method of "spread". Some consequences are given.
We define and study a family of cubic surfaces in the projectivized tangent bundle over a four dimensional projective space associated to the root system D_5. The 27 lines are rational over the base and we determine the classifying map to the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces. This map has degree two and we use it to get short proofs for some results on the Chow group of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces.
In this short note, we show that there exist one dimensional families of cubic fourfolds with Chow motive of abelian type and finite dimensional inside every Hassett divisor of special cubic fourfolds. This also implies abelianity and finite dimensionality of the motive of related Hyperkähler varieties, such as the Fano variety of lines and the LLSvS 8fold.

This note is about the Chow groups of a certain family of smooth cubic fourfolds. This family is characterized by the property that each cubic fourfold $X$ in the family has an involution such that the induced involution on the Fano variety $F$ of lines in $X$ is symplectic and has a $K3$ surface $S$ in the fixed locus. The main result establishes a relation between $X$ and $S$ on the level of Chow motives. As a consequence, we can prove finite-dimensionality of the motive of certain members of the family.
We compute the rational cohomology of the universal family of smooth cubic surfaces using Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. Modulo embedding, the universal family has cohomology isomorphic to that of $\mathbb{P}^2$. A consequence of our theorem is that over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, away from finitely many characteristics, the average number of points on a smooth cubic surface is $q^2 + q + 1$.
We show that the family of 21-dimensional intermediate jacobians of cubic fivefolds containing a given cubic fourfold X is generically an algebraic integrable system. In the proof we apply an integrability criterion, introduced and used by Donagi and Markman to find a similar integrable system over the family of cubic threefolds in X. To enter in the conditions of this criterion, we write down explicitly the known by Beauville and Donagi symplectic structure on the family F(X) of lines on the general cubic fourfold X, and prove that the family of planes on a cubic fivefold containing X is embe…
To a family of smooth projective cubic surfaces one can canonically associate a family of abelian fivefolds. In characteristic zero, we calculate the Hodge groups of the abelian varieties which arise in this way. In arbitrary characteristic we calculate the monodromy group of the universal family of abelian varieties, and thus show that the Galois group of the 27 lines on a suitably general cubic surface in positive characteristic is as large as possible.
For $X$ a smooth cubic threefold we study the Plücker embedding of the Fano surface of lines $S$ of $X$. We prove that if $X$ is general then the minimal gonality of a covering family of curves of $S$ is four and that this happens for a unique family of curves. The analysis also shows that there is a unique pentagonal connecting family of curves, which leads to the fact that the connecting gonality of $S$ is five whereas the degree of irrationality, i.e.\ the minimal degree of a rational map from $S$ to $\mathbb{P}^2$, is six.
In this paper we give a birational model for the theta divisor of the intermediate Jacobian of a generic cubic threefold $X$. We use the standard realization of $X$ as a conic bundle and a $4-$dimensional family of plane quartics which are totally tangent to the discriminant quintic curve of such a conic bundle structure. The additional data of an even theta characteristic on the curves in the family gives us a model for the theta divisor.
We prove that for any t in Q, the curve 5 x^3 + 9 y^3 + 10 z^3 + 12((t^12-t^4-1)/(t^12-t^8-1))^3 (x+y+z)^3 = 0 in P^2 is a genus 1 curve violating the Hasse principle. An explicit Weierstrass model for its Jacobian E_t is given. The Shafarevich-Tate group of each E_t contains a subgroup isomorphic to Z/3 x Z/3.
In this work we construct an analytically completely integrable Hamiltonian system which is canonically associated to any family of Calabi-Yau threefolds. The base of this system is a moduli space of gauged Calabi-Yaus in the family, and the fibers are Deligne cohomology groups (or intermediate Jacobians) of the threefolds. This system has several interesting properties: the multivalued sections obtained as Abel-Jacobi images, or ``normal functions'', of a family of curves on the generic variety of the family, are always Lagrangian; the natural affine coordinates on the base, which are used in…
In 1899, Hutchinson presented a way to obtain a three-parameter family of Hessians of cubic surfaces as blowups of Kummer surfaces. We show that this family consists of those Hessians containing an extra class of conic curves. Based on this, we find the invariant of a cubic surface C in pentahedral form that vanishes if its Hessian is in Hutchinson's family, and we give an explicit map between cubic surfaces in pentahedral form and blowups of Kummer surfaces.
We present modified versions of existing criteria for the density property and the volume density property of complex manifolds. We apply this methods to show the (volume) density property for a family of manifolds given by $x^2y=a(\bar z) + xb(\bar z)$ with $\bar z =(z_0,\ldots,z_n)\in\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ and volume form $\mathrm{d} x/x^2\wedge \mathrm{d} z_0\wedge\ldots\wedge\mathrm{d} z_n$. The key step is showing that in certain cases transitivity of the action of (volume preserving) holomorphic automorphisms implies the (volume) density property, and then giving sufficient conditions for the…
We will consider a two dimensional "symmetric" subfamily of the four dimensional family of Fricke cubic surfaces. The main result is that such symmetric cubic surfaces arise as character varieties for the exceptional group of type G_2. Further, this symmetric family will be related to the fixed points of the triality automorphism of Spin(8), and an example involving the finite simple group of order 6048 inside G_2 will be considered.
Using equivariant geometry, we find a universal formula that computes the number of times a general cubic surface arises in a family. As applications, we show that the PGL(4) orbit closure of a generic cubic surface has degree 96120, and that a general cubic surface arises 42120 times as a hyperplane section of a general cubic 3-fold.
In this paper we study smooth complex projective polarized varieties (X,H) of dimension n \ge 2 which admit a dominating family V of rational curves of H-degree 3, such that two general points of X may be joined by a curve parametrized by V, and such that there is a covering family of rational curves of H-degree one. Our main result is that the Picard number of these manifolds is at most three, and that, if equality holds, (X,H) has an adjuction theoretic scroll structure over a smooth variety.
This small note presents in any dimension a family of cubics that have finite-dimensional motive (in the sense of Kimura). As an illustration, we verify a conjecture of Voevodsky for these cubics, and a conjecture of Murre for the Fano variety of lines of these cubics.
In this paper, we study the geometry of two-torsion points of elliptic curves in order to distinguish the embedded topology of reducible plane curves consisting of a smooth cubic and its tangent lines. As a result, we obtain a new family of Zariski N-ples consisting of such curves.
We study smooth complex projective polarized varieties $(X,H)$ of dimension $ n \ge 2$ which admit a dominating family $V$ of rational curves of $H$-degree $3$, such that two general points of $X$ may be joined by a curve parametrized by $V$ and which do not admit a covering family of lines (i.e. rational curves of $H$-degree one). We prove that such manifolds are obtained from RCC manifolds of Picard number one by blow-ups along smooth centers. If we further assume that $X$ is a Fano manifold, we obtain a stronger result, classifying all Fano RCC manifolds of Picard number $ρ_X \ge 3$
We construct a new twenty-dimensional family of projective eight-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds: the compactified moduli space M_3(Y) of twisted cubics on a smooth cubic fourfold Y that does not contain a plane is shown to be smooth and to admit a contraction M_3(Y) -> Z(Y) to a projective eight-dimensional symplectic manifold Z(Y). The construction is based on results on linear determinantal representations of singular cubic surfaces.
Let G be a simple and simply connected complex linear algebraic group. In this paper, we discuss the generalization of the parabolic construction of holomorphic principal G-bundles over a smooth elliptic curve to the case of a singular curve of arithmetic genus one and to a fibration of Weierstrass cubics over a base B. Except for G of type E_8, the method gives a family of weighted projective spaces associated to a sum of line bundles over B. Working with the universal family of Weierstrass curves over affine two-space and its natural C^*-action, we determine the line bundles that arise in th…
In the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$, we consider orbits of lines under the stabilizer group of the twisted cubic. In the literature, lines of $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ are partitioned into classes, each of which is a union of line orbits. We propose an approach to obtain orbits of the class named $\mathcal{O}_6$, whose complete classification is an open problem. For all even and odd $q$ we describe a family of orbits of $\mathcal{O}_6$ and their stabilizer groups. The orbits of this family include an essential part of all $\mathcal{O}_6$ orbits.
We show the cohomological monodromy for the universal family of smooth cubic threefolds does not factor through the genus five mapping class group. This gives a geometric group theory perspective on the well-known irrationality of cubic threefolds.
Let E_G be a family of hyperelliptic curves over F2^(alg cl) with general Weierstrass equation given over a very small field F. We describe in this paper an algorithm to compute the zeta function of E_g for g in a degree n extension field of F, which has as time complexity O(n^3) and memory requirements O(n^2). With a slightly different algorithm we can get time O(n^2,667) and memory O(n^2,5), and the computation of O(n) curves of the family can be done in time and space O(n^3). All these algorithms are polynomial in the genus.
