Let C be the union of two general connected, smooth, nonrational curves X and Y intersecting transversally at a point P. Assume that P is a general point of X or of Y. Our main result, in a simplified way, says:
Let Q be a point of X. Then Q is the limit of special Weierstrass points on a family of smooth curves degenerating to C if and only if Q is not P and either of the following conditions hold: Q is a special ramification point of the linear system |K_X+(g_Y+1)P|, or Q is a ramification point of the linear system |K_X+(g_Y+1+j)P| for j=-1 or j=1 and P is a Weierstrass point of Y.
Above, g_Y stands for the genus of Y and K_X for a canonical divisor of X.
As an application, we recover in a unified and conceptually simpler way computations made by Diaz and Cukierman of certain divisor classes in the moduli space of stable curves. In our method there is no need to worry about multiplicities, an usual nuisance of the method of test curves.
In this paper we demonstrate that the notion of inflection points and extactic points on plane algebraic curves can be suitably transferred to curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. More precisely, we describe osculating curves and study Weierstrass points of algebraic curves in the surface $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ with respect to certain linear systems. In particular, we study points where a fiber of $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ is tangent, and points with a hyperosculating $(1,1)$-curve. In the first case we find Hessian-like curves that intersect the curve in these point…
The aim of this paper is to review the main techniques in the computation of Weierstraßsemigroup at several points of curves defined over perfect fields, with special emphasis on the case of two points. Some hints about the usage of some packages of the computer algebra software \textsc{Singular} are also given.
We give a precise formula for the value of the canonical Green's function at a pair of Weierstrass points on a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. Further we express the 'energy' of the Weierstrass points in terms of a spectral invariant recently introduced by N. Kawazumi and S. Zhang. It follows that the energy is strictly larger than log 2. Our results generalize known formulas for elliptic curves.
Let X/S be a hyperelliptic curve of genus g over the spectrum of a discrete valuation ring. Two fundamental numerical invariants are attached to X/S: the valuation of the hyperelliptic discriminant of X/S, and the valuation of the Mumford discriminant of X/S (equivalently, the Artin conductor). For a residue field of characteristic 0 as well as for X/S semistable these invariants are known to satisfy certain inequalities. We prove an exact formula relating the two invariants with intersection theoretic data determined by the distribution of Weierstrass points over the special fiber, in the sem…
Costantini and Kappes gave an algebraic equation of the universal family over the Kenyon-Smillie (2,3,4)-Teichmüller curve. This equation gives rise to a family of projective plane quartic curves with three singular members. These singular curves are: (1) an integral nodal quartic, (2) the union of a line and a nodal cubic, and (3) a quadruple line. We determine the limit Weierstrass points on these singular curves.
In the 80's D. Eisenbud and J. Harris posed the following question: "What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves not of compact type?" We answer their question for one-dimensional families of smooth curves degenerating to stable curves with just two components meeting at points in general position. In this note we treat only those families whose total space is regular. Nevertheless, we announce here our most general answer, to be presented in detail in a forthcoming submission.
We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli space of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus $\leq 6$. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for lower genera.
We get an upper bound of the slope of each graded quotient for the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the Hodge bundle of a Teichmüller curve. As an application, we show that the sum of Lyapunov exponents of a Teichmüller curve does not exceed ${(g+1)}/{2}$, with equality reached if and only if the curve lies in the hyperelliptic locus induced from $\mathcal{Q}(2k_1,...,2k_n,-1^{2g+2})$ or it is a special Teichmüller curve in $Ω\mathcal{M}_g(1^{2g-2})$. It also gives an unified interpretation for many known results about the special partial sums of Lyapunov exponents on Teichmüller curves.
We present new addition formulae for the Weierstrass functions associated with a general elliptic curve. We prove the structure of the formulae in n-variables and give the explicit addition formulae for the 2- and 3-variable cases. These new results were inspired by new addition formulae found in the case of an equianharmonic curve, which we can now observe as a specialisation of the results here. The new formulae, and the techniques used to find them, also follow the recent work for the generalisation of Weierstrass' functions to curves of higher genus.
We focus on a class of Weierstrass elliptic threefolds that allows the base of the fibration to be a Fano surface or a numerically $K$-trivial surface. We define the notion of limit tilt stability, and show that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is a limit tilt stable object. We also show that the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform of a limit tilt semistable object of nonzero fiber degree is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf, up to modification in codimension 2.
Let C be a projective Gorenstein curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A generalized linear system on C is a pair (I,f) consisting of a torsion-free, rank-1 sheaf I on C and a map of vector spaces f to the space of global sections of I. If the system is nondegenerate on every irreducible component of C, we associate to it a 0-cycle W, its Weierstrass cycle. Then we show that for each one-parameter family of curves C(t) degenerating to C, and each family of linear systems (L(t),f(t)) along C(t), with L(t) invertible, degenerating to (I,f), the corresponding Weierstrass d…

Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over the fraction field $K$ of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Assume that the residue field $k$ of $R$ is perfect and that $\mathop{\textrm{char}} k \neq 2$. Assume that the Weierstrass points of $C$ are $K$-rational. Let $S = \mathop{\textrm{Spec}} R$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be the minimal proper regular model of $C$ over $S$. Let $\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S)$ denote the Artin conductor of the $S$-scheme $\mathcal{X}$ and let $ν(Δ)$ denote the minimal discriminant of $C$. We prove that $-\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S) \leq ν(Δ)$. As a …
The goal of the paper is to study the limiting behavior of the Weierstrass measures on a smooth curve of genus $g\geqslant 2$ as the curve approaches a certain nodal stable curve represented by a point in the Deligne-Mumford compactification $\bar{\mathcal M}_g$ of the moduli $\mathcal{M}_g$, including irreducible ones or those of compact type. As a consequence, the Weierstrass measures on a stable rational curve at the boundary of $\mathcal{M}_g$ are completely determined. In the process, the asymptotic behavior of the Bergman measure is also studied.
In this paper we consider the problem of calculating the higher-order Weierstrass weight of the branch points of a superelliptic curve $C$. For any $q>1$, we give an exact formula for the $q$-weight of an affine branch point. We also find a formula for the $q$-weight of a point at infinity in the case where $n$ and $d$ are relatively prime. With these formulas, for any fixed $n$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the ratio of the $q$-weight of the branch points, denoted $BW_q$, to the total $q$-weight of points on the curve: \[ \liminf_{d\to\infty}\frac{BW_q}{g(g-1)^2(2q-1)^2}\geq \frac{n+1}…
In the 80's D. Eisenbud and J. Harris developed the general theory of limit linear series, Invent. math. 85 (1986), in order to understand what happens to linear systems and their ramification points on families of non-singular curves degenerating to curves of compact type. They applied their theory to the study of limits of Weierstrass points, among other endeavours. In one of their articles, Invent. math. 87 (1987), they asked: "What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves not of compact type?" In this eprint we address this question within a …
We use a recent characterization of minimal value set polynomials and $q$- Frobenius nonclassical curves to construct curves that generalize the Hermitian curve. The genus $g$ and the number $N$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of the curves are computed and, for a special family of these curves, we determine the Weierstrass semigroup at the unique point at infinity. These special curves yield new examples of Castle curves and improve on a previous example of Garcia-Stichtenoth of curves with large ratio $N/g$.
We prove in this paper the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem for all mixed Shimura varieties and discuss the lower bounds for Galois orbits of special points of mixed Shimura varieties. In particular we reprove a result of Silverberg in a different approach. Then combining these results we prove the André-Oort conjecture for any mixed Shimura variety whose pure part is a subvariety of A_6^n.
In the 80's D. Eisenbud and J. Harris considered the following problem: ``What are the limits of Weierstrass points in families of curves degenerating to stable curves?'' But for the case of stable curves of compact type, treated by them, this problem remained wide open since then. In the present article, we propose a concrete approach to this problem, and give a quite explicit solution for stable curves with just two irreducible components meeting at points in general position.
The Hermitian, Suzuki and Ree curves form three special families of curves with unique properties. They arise as the Deligne-Lusztig varieties of dimension one and their automorphism groups are the algebraic groups of type 2A2, 2B2 and 2G2, respectively. For the Hermitian and Suzuki curves very ample divisors are known that yield smooth projective embeddings of the curves. In this paper we establish a very ample divisor for the Ree curves. Moreover, for all three families of curves we find a symmetric set of equations for a smooth projective model, in dimensions 2, 4 and 13, respectively. Usin…
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g>1$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic zero and $O$ one of the $(2g+2)$ Weierstrass points in $C(K)$. Let $J$ be the jacobian of $C$, which is a $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $K$. Let us consider the canonical embedding of $C$ into $J$ that sends $O$ to the zero of the group law on $J$. This embedding allows us to identify $C(K)$ with a certain subset of the commutative group $J(K)$. A special case of the famous theorem of Raynaud (Manin--Mumford conjecture) asserts that the set of torsion points in $C(K)$ is finite. It i…
