We prove a finiteness result for the $\partial$-patterned guts decomposition of all 3-manifolds obtained by splitting a given orientable, irreducible and $\partial$-irreducible 3-manifold along a closed incompressible surface. Then using the Thurston norm, we deduce that the JSJ-pieces of all 3-manifolds dominated by a given compact 3-manifold belong, up to homeomorphism, to a finite collection of compact 3-manifolds. We show also that any closed orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many integral homology spheres and any compact 3-manifolds orientable 3-manifold dominates only finitely many exterior of knots in $S^3$.
For given closed orientable 3-manifolds $M$ and $N$ let $cD(M,N)$ be the set of mapping degrees from $M$ to $N$. We address the problem: For which $N$, $cD(M,N)$ is finite for all $M$? The answer is known in Thurston's picture of closed orientable irreducible 3-manifolds unless the target is a non-trivial graph manifold. We prove that for each closed non-trivial graph manifold $N$, $cD(M,N)$ is finite for all graph manifold $M$. The proof uses a recently developed standard forms of maps between graph manifolds and the estimation of the $\widetilde{\rm PSL}(2,{\R})$-volume for certain class of …
We prove that in dimensions not equal to 4, 5, or 7, the homology and homotopy groups of the classifying space of the topological group of diffeomorphisms of a disk fixing the boundary are finitely generated in each degree. The proof uses homological stability, embedding calculus and the arithmeticity of mapping class groups. From this we deduce similar results for the homeomorphisms of $R^n$ and various types of automorphisms of 2-connected manifolds.
By constructing certain maps, this note completes the answer of the Question: For which closed orientable 3-manifold $N$, the set of mapping degrees $cD(M,N)$ is finite for any closed orientable 3-manifold $M$?
We prove that the mapping class group of a Heegaard splitting with a distance of at least 3 is finite. However, we have constructed a counterexample with a distance of 2 that disproves this assertion. In addition, the fact that the mapping class group of a Heegaard splitting with a distance of at most 1 is infinite, when combined with our results, provides an answer to the question of the finiteness of mapping class groups as viewed from Heegaard distance.
We prove for the Reidemeister-Turaev torsion of closed oriented three-manifolds some finiteness properties in the sense of Goussarov and Habiro, that is, with respect to some cut-and-paste operations which preserve the homology type of the manifolds. In general, those properties require the manifolds to come equipped with an Euler structure and a homological parametrization.
In this paper we show that a given set of lengths of closed geodesics, there are only finitely many convex cocompact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with that specified length spectrum, homotopy equivalent to a given 3-manifold without a handlebody factor, up to orientation preserving isometries.
We prove that there are only finitely many closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds with injectivity radius and first eigenvalue of the Laplacian bounded below whose fundamental groups can be generated by a given number of elements. An application to arithmetic manifolds is also given.
In this paper, it is shown that every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with nonzero degree onto at most finitely many homeomorphically distinct irreducible non-geometric orientable closed 3-manifolds. Moreover, given any nonzero integer, as a mapping degree up to sign, every orientable closed 3-manifold maps with that degree onto only finitely many homeomorphically distinct orientable closed 3-manifolds.
Given a closed smooth manifold $M$ of even dimension $2n\ge6$ with finite fundamental group, we show that the classifying space ${\rm BDiff}(M)$ of the diffeomorphism group of $M$ is of finite type and has finitely generated homotopy groups in every degree. We also prove a variant of this result for manifolds with boundary and deduce that the space of smooth embeddings of a compact submanifold $N\subset M$ of arbitrary codimension into $M$ has finitely generated higher homotopy groups based at the inclusion, provided the fundamental group of the complement is finite. As an intermediate result,…
The main result is a short effective proof of Tao Li's theorem that a closed non Haken hyperbolic 3-manifold N has at most finitely many irreducible Heegaard splittings.
Let M be a geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds. We prove that the spectrum of the Laplace operator on M is finite in a small interval which is optimal.
The Torelli group $\mathcal T(X)$ of a closed smooth manifold $X$ is the subgroup of the mapping class group $π_0(\mathrm{Diff}^+(X))$ consisting of elements which act trivially on the integral cohomology of $X$. In this note we give counterexamples to Theorem 3.4 of Verbitsky's paper "Mapping class group and a global Torelli theorem for hyperkähler manifolds" (Duke Math.~J.~162 (2013), no.~15, 2929-2986) which states that the Torelli group of simply connected Kähler manifolds of complex dimension $\ge 3$ is finite. This is done by constructing under some mild conditions homomorphisms $J: \mat…
We prove that a class of asymptotically nonnegatively curved manifolds (in the sense of Abresch) satisfying some uniform Euclidean type volume growth conditions contains only finitely many homeomorphism types.
We give a quantification of residual finiteness for the fundamental groups of hyperbolic manifolds that admit a totally geodesic immersion to a compact, right-angled Coxeter orbifold of dimension 3 or 4. Specifically, we give explicit upper bounds on residual finiteness that are linear in terms of geodesic length. We then extend the linear upper bounds to hyperbolic manifolds with a finite cover that admits such an immersion. Since the quantifications are given in terms of geodesic length, we define the geodesic residual finiteness growth and show that this growth is equivalent to the usual re…
For any hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with totally geodesic boundary, there are finitely many boundary slopes for essential immersed surfaces of a given genus. There is a uniform bound for the number of such boundary slopes if the genus of $\partial M$ or the volume of $M$ is bounded above. When the volume is bounded above, then area of $\partial M$ is bounded above and the length of closed geodesic on $\partial M$ is bounded below.
In this note we determine all possible dominations between different products of manifolds, when none of the factors of the codomain is dominated by products. As a consequence, we determine the finiteness of every product-associated functorial semi-norm on the fundamental classes of the aforementioned products. These results give partial answers to questions of M. Gromov.
We give bordism-finiteness results for manifolds with semi-simple group action. Consider the class of oriented manifolds which admit a circle action with isolated fixed points such that the action extends to an $S^3$-action with fixed point. We exhibit various subclasses, characterized by an upper bound for the Euler characteristic and properties of the first Pontrjagin class, which contain only finitely many oriented bordism types in any given dimension. Also we show finiteness results for homotopy complex projective spaces and complete intersections with $S^3$-action as above.
Mapping class groups of Haken 3-manifolds enjoy many of the homological finiteness properties of mapping class groups of 2-manifolds of finite type. For example, H(M) has a torsionfree subgroup of finite index, which is geometrically finite (i. e. is the fundamental group of a finite aspherical complex). This was proven by J. Harer for 2-manifolds and by the second author for Haken 3-manifolds. In this paper we prove that H(M) acts properly discontinuously on a contractible simplicial complex, with compact quotient. This implies that every torsionfree subgroup of finite index in H(M) is geomet…
Let the circle act effectively in a Hamiltonian fashion on a compact symplectic manifold $(M, ω)$. Assume that the fixed point set $M^{S^1}$ has exactly two components, $X$ and $Y$, and that $\dim(X) + \dim(Y) +2 = \dim(M)$. We first show that $X$, $Y$ and $M$ are simply connected. Then we show that, up to $S^1$-equivariant diffeomorphism, there are finitely many such manifolds in each dimension. Moreover, we show that in low dimensions, the manifold is unique in a certain category. We use techniques from both areas of symplectic geometry and geometric topology.
The main theorem shows that if M is an irreducible compact connected orientable 3-manifold with non-empty boundary, then the classifying space BDiff(M rel dM) of the space of diffeomorphisms of M which restrict to the identity map on boundary(M) has the homotopy type of a finite aspherical CW-complex. This answers, for this class of manifolds, a question posed by M Kontsevich. The main theorem follows from a more precise result, which asserts that for these manifolds the mapping class group H(M rel dM) is built up as a sequence of extensions of free abelian groups and subgroups of finite index…
In this paper we show that for a large class C of 4-manifolds each member of C has only finitely many simple homotopy type upto s-cobordism. This result generalizes a similar result of Hillman for certain complex surfaces. We also present a correction in the proof of Hillman's result.
In this paper, we generalize Bonahon's characterization of geometrically infinite torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL(2, $\mathbb{C}$) to geometrically infinite discrete subgroups $Γ$ of isometries of negatively pinched Hadamard manifolds $X$. We then generalize a theorem of Bishop to prove that every discrete geometrically infinite isometry subgroup $Γ$ has a set of nonconical limit points with the cardinality of the continuum.
This article is dedicated to the study of asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of infinitely-punctured surfaces obtained by thickening planar trees. Such groups include the braided Ptolemy-Thompson groups $T^\sharp,T^\ast$ introduced by Funar and Kapoudjian, and the braided Houghton groups $\mathrm{br}H_n$ introduced by Degenhardt. We present an elementary construction of a contractible cube complex, on which these groups act with cube-stabilisers isomorphic to finite extensions of braid groups. As an application, we prove Funar-Kapoudjian's and Degenhardt's conjectures by showing that $T…
We give a new, algebraically computable formula for skein modules of closed 3-manifolds via Heegaard splittings. As an application, we prove that skein modules of closed 3-manifolds are finite-dimensional, resolving in the affirmative a conjecture of Witten.
We show that any twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten representation of a mapping class group of an orientable, compact surface with boundary has finite image. This generalizes work of Etingof, Rowell and Witherspoon showing that the braid group images are finite. In particular, our result answers their question regarding finiteness of images of arbitrary mapping class group representations in the affirmative. Our approach is to translate the problem into manipulation of colored graphs embedded in the given surface. To do this translation, we use the fact that any twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten representation a…
Our main result asserts that for any given numbers C and D the class of simply connected closed smooth manifolds of dimension m<7 which admit a Riemannian metric with sectional curvature bounded in absolute value by C and diameter uniformly bounded from above by D contains only finitely many diffeomorphism types. Thus in these dimensions the lower positive bound on volume in Cheeger's Finiteness Theorem can be replaced by a purely topological condition, simply-connectedness. In dimension 4 instead of simply-connectedness here only non-vanishing of the Euler characteristic has to be required. A…
A closed 4-manifold (or, more generally, a finite $PD_4$-space) has a finitely dominated infinite regular covering space if and only if either its universal covering space is finitely dominated or it is finitely covered by the mapping torus of a self homotopy equivalence of a $PD_3$-complex.
The main goal of this note is to provide evidence that the first rational homology of the Johnson subgroup $K_{g,1}$ of the mapping class group of a genus g surface with one marked point is finite-dimensional. Building on work of Dimca-Papadima, we use symplectic representation theory to show that, for all $g > 3$, the completion of $H_1(K_{g,1},\mathbb{Q})$ with respect to the augmentation ideal in the rational group algebra of $\mathbb{Z}^{2g}$ is finite-dimensional. We also show that the terms of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group have infinite-dimensional rational homology i…
We prove that there exists a positive, explicit function $F(k, E)$ such that, for any group $G$ admitting a $k$-acylindrical splitting and any generating set $S$ of $G$ with $\mathrm{Ent}(G,S)<E$, we have $|S| \leq F(k, E)$. We deduce corresponding finiteness results for classes of groups possessing acylindrical splittings and acting geometrically with bounded entropy: for instance, $D$-quasiconvex $k$-malnormal amalgamated products acting on $δ$-hyperbolic spaces or on $CAT(0)$-spaces with entropy bounded by $E$. A number of finiteness results for interesting families of Riemannian or metric …
Kneser-Haken Finiteness asserts that for each compact 3-manifold M there is an integer c(M) such that any collection of k>c(M) closed, essential, 2-sided surfaces in M must contain parallel elements. We show here that if M is closed then twice the number of tetrahedra in a (pseudo)-triangulation of M suffices for c(M).
This is the less official, English version of the proof of the fact that every closed atoroidal 3-manifold carries finitely many isotopy classes of tight contact structures.
In this paper we show that for a given 3-manifold and a given Heegaard splitting there are finitely many preferred decomposing systems of $3g - 3$ disjoint essential disks. These are characterized by a combinatorial criterion which is a slight strengthening of Casson-Gordon's rectangle condition. This is in contrast to fact that in general there can exist infinitely many such systems of disks which satisfy just the Casson-Gordon rectangle condition.
For a compact smooth manifold $M$ (with boundary) we prove that the topological rank of the diffeomorphism group Diff$_0^k(M)$ is finite for all $k\geq 1$. This extends a result from [2] where the same claim is proved in the special case of dim M = k = 1.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, we prove that the limit of a sequence of embedded, almost properly embedded free boundary minimal hypersurfaces, with uniform area and Morse index upper bound, always inherits a non-trivial Jacobi field. To approach this, we prove a one-sided Harnack inequality for minimal graphs on balls with many holes.

Let G be a simple Lie group of real rank one, and S the ideal boundary of the corresponding symmetric space of noncompact type (H^n_R, H^n_C, H^n_H or H^2_O). We show the finiteness of the possible values of the secondary characteristic classes of transversely homogeneous foliations on a fixed manifold whose transverse structures are modeled on the G-action on S, except the case where G=SO(n+1,1) for even n. For this exceptional case, we construct examples of foliations on a manifold which break the finiteness and show a weaker form of the finiteness. These are generalizations of a finiteness …
In this paper we compute the mapping class group of simply-connected closed smooth manifolds $M$ with integral homology $H_{*}(M) \cong \mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z \oplus \mathbb Z$ provided that $\dim M \ne 4$.
Let A denote either the automorphism group of the free group of rank n>=4 or the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus n>=12 with at most 1 boundary component, and let G be either the subgroup of IA-automorphisms or the Torelli subgroup of A, respectively. For a natural number N denote by G_N the Nth term of the lower central series of G. We prove that (i) any subgroup of G containing [G,G] (in particular, the Johnson kernel in the mapping class group case) is finitely generated; (ii) if N=2 or n>=8N-4 and K is any subgroup of G containing G_N (for instance, K can be the Nth te…
